Quick question here, something that's puzzling me.
It might be because I'm just totally wrong, but our X10's have 384MB RAM correct?
Now, I thought I had heard before that Android 1.6 limited RAM to 256MB. Since the update, shouldn't I have around 100+ more free RAM than I had before, due to 2.1 allowing for the full 384?
For example, I would have about 110mb free at most times in 1.6, and with the same apps/widgets/etc running on 2.1, should I have around 210mb?
Answers appreciated
(P.S. anyone know why search never works for me on these forums???)
I'm not quite sure, but I remeber reading that it uses 256 mb of ram memory and the remaining is for the graphics.
I was wondering about that. Quadrant shows I have 280MB plus 128MB 'inactive'.

That'd make sense, never really thought of that.
I'll have to read into it a bit more, I'm pretty new to Android so some of the more technical stuff is still unknown to me

So, I just played with a friend's SGS 2 and when i looked into his App Manager, it would say he had 500-600 MB of free ram. Now, no matter how much I wipe or how many processes I kill, I cannot go over 450MB from the "1 GB" we are supposed to have.
I thought It was android reserving some RAM for himself but with this comparison it doesn't make sense anymore. Any recommendation on this? Might be because we have webtop running on background and SGS doesn't?

I usually have between 500 - 600 mb of RAM available... all depends on how many apps & process you have running.
Webtop does not run unless it is being used. As far as the difference in usage, I think Motoblur just uses more resources. I use Bloat Freezer and i can get up to 600MB free like when I reboot but then processes start up and it goes to about 500MB. Then I'll use it for awhile and it will get down to 200 to 300MB but never any less than 200

I don't have that many applications installed. And even so, the installed applications shouldn't be taking up RAM unless i run them, right?
I just did a restart and checked the RAM and it was just at 471 MB. I might mention that I'm using Go Launcher and the stock launcher is running also, because if I freeze it with Root Uninstaller, the calendar widget won't work.
Any guide on how to optimize RAM usage or what bloat should i freeze/uninstall?
using CM7, have around 400MB free out of 820 or so at any given point in time.
879mb of ram doesn't = 1gig. I would like to have that extra 120mb in free ram. instead of 600, 720 free. When I go into "About Phone" it used to say the current amount out of 879 but now it seems I've lost 100mb of ram. I've wiped/flashed/rebooted countless times to no avail. Even used Aura deblurred and CM7 with almost the same results.
On my phone it shows 471/816. Yes, would have loved to have that extra 208 MB of ram... But still Swiftks, could we have some info on your mods/apps? 600 MB of free ram is a LOT compared to what we have.
I have used ROMs that showed 575-620mb free but usually after rebooting. I'd say most ROMs will run from 400-500 free. But if you could, look on your phone under running apps and add up your used and free ram and post back.
I've heard that Go Launcher is a resource hog. Might want to try it without that just to see if there is any difference.

There's a huge misconception about how much RAM should be free at any given time. Honestly, the less RAM being used is actually better. That means processes are cued up for multitasking and it uses less resources to start them back up when used. Also, if you have any RAM left then that means you don't need any more because the phone will only use what it needs so if you have like 100MB of Ram available then that means you don't need it, but if you were at like 10 to 20MB free then I'd worry. But most people say they have like 200 available so there really is no reason to worry/complain. Plus, it's better for the battery to have the processes stored in RAM because it takes more energy to start an app back up then to keep it idle.

Here is a good article that explains much better how android works in regards to processes:

If I add up the mb's of apps running right now it's less than 90mb but its showing 190mb is being used. That is including the media/motorola/stock junk on a fresh install of ninja. I haven't even opened market or added my google account yet.

I understand your point, but it makes me wonder... Devices like SGS 1 for example, only have 512 MB ram. Based on how the Atrix and Galaxy S2 are said to have 1GB but in reality it only has 800ish MB, the SGS 1 will also have 400+.
Now, my atrix goes from boot to a usable state leaving me ONLY 471 MB of free ram, taking up 380+ (rounding numbers of course). Since the SGS 1 also runs on Android 2.3, the same thing should happen right? taking up 380MB out of it's 400+ MB of ram, leaving only 50 (rounding again) MB of RAM? Highly unlikely, if that was the case, only opening up the browser would take up those 50 "free" RAM.
I don't have a SGS with me to corroborate this theory but I'd bet the SGS starts up to a usuable state with 100-150 of free ram, using up only 250-300 MB of ram, why can't we pull that off from our devices?
It's not that I'm not against using the RAM on our devices, but only comparing how much RAM my device is using I can tell whether it's running efficiently or it has a resource Hog somewhere.

your phone is like a fat kid with a birthday cake. he's always going to take a few extra slices for himself and not share with anyone.
(system taking RAM and not sharing with any other processes)
I think it has to do with Motoblur using up more resources. It is so integrated into accounts and everything that it can't help but take up a bunch of RAM which is why they probably went with 1GB of RAM to begin with, they probably couldn't pull it off with just 512

I have been so busy catching up with all the amazing stuff Da_G has been pumping out (thanks!) that I didn't even take a look at this until now. I am showing that we only have 733MB of avaliable RAM. That is a far cry from 1024MB.
I am seeing 733MB w/ both Android System Info and with the built-in Task Manager.
Does anyone know if we indeed have 1024MB of RAM and... if it is just assigned else where?
Yes we have 1GB every phone has RAM missing because the system is holding it.
I remember one time the OS didn't support that much not sure if that's the case now but the phone has 1GB to my knowledge and.what I've read
sent from AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note Dual Core 1.83 GHz
Just like memory... Do we really have 16gb? Its never what they say... All marketing!
Sent from my SGH-I717M
I have also read that is has 1GB everywhere, but missing 291MB seems like an awful lot.
I beleive my Atrix showed 897MB. I just seems like an awful lot 'mssing' w/ the Note.

I am with you on that! Makes me
I noticed the same, it's showing short but using the same app(system tuner pro) on my G2 it showed the correct 512mb.
It's not false marketing; it's fact. There is 1GB of RAM in the phone. I'm pretty sure the rest of the RAM is used by the GPU. My GS2 has the same thing, shows about 800MB of RAM available to apps.
What does it matter? I usually have 3-500MB of free RAM. Have you ever managed to fill the RAM with processes? Do you know anyone who has? Android clears old apps from memory even when there is enough free so I have never even come close to filling my RAM.
Graphics memory
As with any computer your phone has a gpu which needs graphics memory and because the gpu is integrated (SOC) it takes its memory off the top. This can be seen with any computer you have with integrated graphics it will section off some memory for your gpu.
As for the flash memory space many issues can take it down such as the file system, operating system, it just depends but trust me before the phone was turned on and android installed it had 16gb of memory and 1gb of ram
I'm about 100% CPU and GPU can't share ram as they do completely different tasks. They could have just added the cram and the ram to get 1GB though... But otherwise, the missing ram is from system tasks and the OS.

Do we have a reference or any proof of this?
And to the post directly above this, any computer that does not have a dedicated graphics card uses shared system memory, just like our phones. 733MB is just quite a bit away from 1024MB.
they can and do use the same memory because they are the same soc aka system on chip. all this is integrated.
So if you built a PC yourself and loaded it with 2gig RAM and booted into windows it would have 2 gig FREE memory?

I am not talking about FREE. I am talking about the system as a whole. Do we really have 1GB of RAM? Where it is being used I am not so concerned about at this point, but it may help us figure out if we do indeed have 1GB (Where is the remaing 291MB assigned).
The missing 291 is being used by android..to load the launcher Widgets and everything else in the background.

i have international version of note.its same way on this one.the missing ram is held by system tasks.as for 16gb storage memory.if you wipe all area on usb storage .u will have 16gb but not a working phone.another thing about free ram.dont use task manager to stop apps.all it does is make the phone lag.leave everything running.

Why do our phone only have like 720MB available if the tablet has so much more?

Of that one gig of ram there is firm ware and the OS and some preloaded apps on the Nexus 7 on your phone it is about the same but with a skinned UI and then the carriers bloatware on top of that. It all takes up ram, so no bloatware or skinned UI gives you more ram on your Nexus 7.:good:

Its full ram is used to play apps and games on your Nexus 7.
Also...the nexus tablet doesn't have a cell antenna...So no mobile data to keep track of, those services are running on your phone all the time
A friend of mine bought At&t Galaxy S3 and it suppose to have 2gb Ram but when i check the phone it show 1.6GB ram and only 1.03gb available. so i guess it is used by system or graphic or something. Just like the computers that doesn't have dedicated graphic card so if your computer has 4gb ram you would have 3gb ram available the rest is reserved for graphic. i am just assuming that the same this is happening to our phone. if i remember correctly when i had CM9 and when i went to setting, about phone it showed only 768mb instead of 1gb.
I have all 16 on my computer.

Yeah, i'm sure your right, its reserved for video and whatnot, but why doesn't the Nexus 7 need that video ram used up? It's got a pretty fast video chip too...
My only gripe with the Note is the 1GB of ram. You only have about 350mb available and as we all know, Android caches stuff you run, but most of the time your not holding many apps in that free 350MB so its always restarting apps anyways. This phone (any ICS phone really) needs 2gb of ram.
I've used the S3 and yeah, its super snappy because so much more stays in all that extra active ram... Samsung saw the light and added extra ram, I hope this is a new trend... How do we get a 2gb chip soldered in place of the 1gb chip

Our phones are deliberately under-clocked to 716, some may say it's for the battery life but I think it's because the higher clock speeds lead to shorter phone life. Using custom kernels, you can clock back up or even overclock. The payment is made mostly in battery life, but if your ROM has a memory leak of even the smallest size, overclocking will open the dam and the phone will suffer for it. Also, the phone will run at a higher temperature, which for sure will end its life much faster than leaving it at 716. This is the way I feel about overclocking: If you get the performance you want, leave it alone.
Wtf??
Clock speeds have not a single thing to do with ram whatsoever
Overclock is for the cpu

Apps are continuously closing and having to be relaunched (slower). Back in the older days of android where apps were 20-30mb it wasn't a huge deal, but some of these new games/apps take up well over 100mb of ram. everything else in the background is closed as it needs to make room..
Would be nice to have more active app space for a much smoother "multitasking" experience.
Sounds like we need a high speed dev to create some software to access the SD card and use it as ram....
Is that even possible ????...Hmmmmmm

Sounds like you want to just want to be able to adjust your LMK settings. I don't believe there is kernel that lets you do that yet, but I'm sure there will be eventually.
