Undervolted kernel question - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently running UK 2.1 with comavolt non-voodoo undervolted kernel and EC09 modem. I have noticed that with the comavolt kernel I haven’t seen any increase in battery life if anything my battery life is worse. I used cpu spy to see the time the cpu is spending in each state and I am spending over 90% of the time in the deepsleep state. Does any of these undervolted kernels affect this deepsleep state or are they only undervolted from 100 MHz to 1000 MHz states? I was thinking that maybe they do not affect this deepsleep state and that is why I am not noticing any difference in battery life. I am trying to determine if it is worth trying the OTB voodoo kernel and create my own undervoltage settings but if they don’t affect the deepsleep state then I won’t even bother. I am trying to get the best battery life I can get out of this phone.

How can I tell if I am running comavolt kernel? I loaded the zip file through CWM with no errors. I have been running it for weeks now but when I look at the kernel information in cpu spy it has the following.

I didn’t see any mention of comavolt or time infinity so I am started to think that I may not be running comavolt kernel after all. Is the above correct for comavolt or is this a stock kernel?

[Q] Massively decreased battery life, Cell Standby

I previously got awesome battery life on my phone. I've made some changes recently, and I wanted your help narrowing down what is causing the decreased battery life.
I network unlocked my phone. I'm leaning towards this as the culprit. If this is the problem, how do I go about locking my phone back to T-Mobile?
I flashed the new Bionix ROM. It was very slow for me, so I flashed the non-overclocked Dragon kernel.
I wanted to flash my phone back to stock and start reinstalling things, so I did that, and then flashed the new Loki ROM. Same battery issue.
I started using ADW Launcher EX.
When I go into the battery info menu, it shows that "Cell Standby" is using a large amount of battery.

If you're still using the dragon kernel that's the problem. If you're not I'd recondition the battery.

Definitely use supercurio. It's based on stock, all of the other kernels are compiled from non-vibrant source and inherently have poor battery life.
dragon is as goon on battery as voodoo gets unles u overclock dragon to 1.4 which is overclocked by default to 1.4 so if you are not running setcpu to bring back cpu frequency bact to stock 1ghz , it will chew up your battery like 1.4 ghz should

[Q] SetCPU & jt kernels

The latest jt kernels and people's derivatives of them have not been playing well with SetCPU on my phone. It has been freezing up. Any advice on a certain version I should use or maybe settings issue?
Check to make sure profiles is not enabled. Using them will make your phone freeze and or not come back awake.
Also make sure your on conservative and not ondemand. I hear the ondemand is still being a little buggy.
Currently I'm running jt's oc kernel at 1.3ghz stable. Setcpu is on conservative and I have zero problems, only when I change to another setting does it have problems.
At this time what could I use setcpu for besides overclocking?
theres no point in using setcpu with jts kernels as theyre not overclocked...unless u need to UNDERclock for some reason

I'm using setcpu to underclock my phone (for bettery battery life), and I set up a few profiles to drop the speed down when the screen is off (100 min, 200 max), and when the battery is below a certain amount (100 min, 400 max), and it seems to be running fine. No freezes, no problem waking up.

JT doesn't have an OC kernel out. If you're using nemesis's OTB OC kernel then you shouldn't be using SetCPU, you should be using Voltage Control from market. SetCPU has caused some issues. This will give you orange CWM but you can always Odin the red one.

You can't flash kernels without an unlocked bootloader. If you have unlocked bootloader and CWM, you can flash either edgan's or faux's both of them work as I have tested them personally on my phone.

Which version do most people prefer? And it seems a bit complicated on the Kernel part. I know how to root, and unlock the BL, but when it comes to kernel's I'm not so familiar with it. I want to install it though to OC the phone.

I tried both kernel's and haven't noticed any improvements in performance, but to be fair I haven't tested them extensively + they can be overclocked to more than 1.1 ghz

Installing isn't hard, you just flash them via CWM. Faux's thread has more replised so perhaps his kernel is more popular. You can try both and decide for yourself. But I think you need to wipe after each installation to avoid problems.

I thought I had installed CWM when I rooted again from that previous thread, but it didn't. Is there a specific thread for the CWM download? Thanks again!
Edit: Apparently I did have CWM installed? I booted into Android Recovery and it had the same options I used to root from the other thread? said Atrix 4g [version] goapk.com

In my opinion, the greater benefit of having one of these kernels loaded is the ability to extend battery life by using setcpu to do things like underclock when the screen is off, and such. As for speed, I get quadrant scores in the 3500s, ymmv.

Yep, thats CWM. Download the correct kernel (d00 or 1100), put it onto your SD card, reboot into CWM, select "install a file from zip" or something like that, select your SD card, select zip, confirm installation.
After that reboot. If you have issues -> wipe data and reboot again.

Quadrant scores are awesome for boosting self esteem, but from what I use,- it didn't translate into real life performance increase

Faux has a bunch of different versions of his kernel with built in profiles. Besides that I haven't seen a list of standalone profiles. You can always make your own one I guess as long as you don't OC to 2.0 ghz

I'm using his 1.1Ghz Kernel right now and the new Quadrant scores strokes my epeen, lol.
I didn't see any higher Kernel speed for Faux? I think his 1.2Ghz was "coming soon".

I thought the 1.2ghz was released already, but oh well... You can always set your own profiles, just remember to downclock based on CPU temperature.
If CPU heats up > 50 C - downclock back to 1ghz for example.

Yea, i just made 1 profile to downclock it back down to 1Ghz with Min 216Mhz at 50 C for temp. Priority 99.
Do you have any good profiles for battery management with this kernel? I couldn't find any around and the ones that are around are for the stock kernel.

I don't use OC at the moment, but for batter management it's basically -
screen off = lowest CPU clock
battery < 30% = 1000 or 800 or whatever you feel necessary.

I just lurked around the old SetCPU threads and got some ideas. Lowest I'll run is 750 when not screen off or charging, apparently thats the lowest it can run without being laggy.

[Q] Question on Kernel differences

I'm a a newer android user but quickly picking up on custom ROM's, etc. I'm currently running Alien #4 with the Alien theme and the kernel that comes with alien. I'm always trying to test out new combinations of things to see if I can get the most performance out of my phone while still maintaining a great battery life. So it's a constant trade-off. So my question is
Is there a difference between Faux's stock kernel for the atrix and the one that comes with alien or are the both stock in the sense of the same one as if I were running the Gingerbread release from AT&T?
If I were to install the Faux or kohlk OC kernls, but not install SetCPU would they still run at the higher clock speeds or would they run at 1GHZ until I used SetCPU to overclock? If they only run at 1Ghz, would there be benefit to using those kernels instead? I'm assuming they have more optimizations than just the overclocking. I'm quite happy with 1Ghz as my phone is plenty snappy so I'd rather keep the good battery life of 1Ghz but maybe get some better optimizations if possible.
I understand I can run SetCPU to have it clock down the CPU, but I've tried that on a number of occasions and even with it supposedly capped at 1Ghz, I still saw SetCPU saying my phone was in the 1.1Ghz state a fair bit.
I have faux's 1.3 ghz kernel and my battery life is comparable to the stock 1 ghz kernel.
Faux's stock kernel is a more optimized version of the stock kernel and is pretty good but his best work is put into his OC kernels. I suggest going with one of those...and yes you would need setCPU to get it to run above 1 ghz.
Have you ever run a "quadrant standard" test on your phone? I ran one when I was stock and scored below 1750. When I was on Alien v4 with faux's 1.3 ghz OC, I hit 2500. Now that I'm on CM7 with the same OC (and a little undervolting) I'm scoring above 4700.
Yea I use quandrant quite frequently but for me quandrant scores are good but I use my judgement on which feels the best. I know its now scientific but it works for me.

[Q] Over Clocking Kernels

Samsung Fascinate CDMA
Rooted MIUI 1.9.16
Did a brief search here looking to understand how to operate overclocking kernals, but find it/me relatively limited.
I have installed and ran Glitch v11 and v12, played around with HL to LL, and made adjustments to undervoltage utilizing Pimp My CPU and Voltage Control. I have also ran Tweak (though not really a kernal).
My question is this,
am I overclocking when I reduce voltage on Mhz's above 1,000?
If not, could someone point me to, or explain how to achieve overclocking on our phones, and
which kernel and governor do you prefer for overclocking?
As an ammended note, I've installed Tegrak Overclock, but am still looking for a user guide...

If you're the running the glitch kernel...use voltage control, not tegrak overclock...over clocking is when you turn the CPU speed above its normal speed..anything over 1GHz.
under volting is when you turn down the voltage frequency to achieve better battery life...
Any one clock speed may perform more or less stable with different under volting unfortunately all of our phones will vary in performance so one setting that works for one may not be the best for another so experimentation is really the best option...this applies for schedulers and governors as well.
I personally overclock as high as I can until it freezes or crashes..then I go 1 setting down...I then try undervolting different steps observing the stability of my phone...when I find what I like,I run it for a few days, then if its still nice and stable I will apply on boot.
The different leakage values are affected by the hardware quality of the chips in our phones which also vary..I start with high and see how high I can overclock..note the setting, then try medium..see how high I can overclock and so on...just as a reference..high leakage creates the most heat and is the least efficient, but works for most phones, while low leakage is the most efficient and generates the least heat and will work with not as many phones

come on man.. Clock speed (mhz) and undervolting are 2 completely different things.. Forget the voltage.. No changing the voltage is NOT overclocking.. You overclock by changing your maximum clock above 1000mhz which is stock for this phone.. Try long pressing 1200mhz and selecting set as max.. Now your overclocked to 1200mhz..

No decreasing the voltage is simply undervolting whether it's over 1000 or under. The idea behind undervolting is increasing battery life, but you can't necessarily go and set each level to the maximum undervolt (200) you half to see what works. Increasing the processor speed is overclocking, stock speed is 1000 so anything over that is over clocked. As far as how far as how far you can over clock depends mostly on 2 things, 1. the kernel your using, ( for example if it shows 1300 in the list that means thats all that specific kernel supports) 2. It varys greatly between phones. For example with glitch you can overclock to 1700 but very few phones can run that high for longer than a few minutes!

Yes.. And the fact you say your running glitch and your max oc is only 1300 my guess is you broke your kernel with tegrak overclocks module.. Delete tegrak and stop downloading overclock apps. or any other root app unless you know fully the consequences first.. If after deleting tegrak, and rebooting, if your voltage control don't show a maximum clock of 1700 mhz, then you will need to reflash your glitch kernel

There are no issues with glitch.. It is what I run.. Very smooth.. Just have to give your phone time to adjust and build cache

Landscape
Re-installed Glitch v12 ML last night and have it overclocked @ 1,200 with no under-voltage...yet. Want to see any adverse effects.
I started at 1,300 and it locked up then rebooted within 5 minutes.
A concern I have is that now my phone will not Auto Rotate to Landscape even though I have Auto-Rotate 'on' in Settings.
I've scoured Sixstrings Glitch thread to no avail. Though it's not needed anymore, I also flashed the cleaning script just to see if it would make a difference.
Is there a work around or fix for this?
Make sure you're on the latest 9/15 version of the kernel. Anything before that will kill all of your phone's sensors.

That was it. I had re-installed the older Glitch v12 that was already on my PC. Deleted them and downloaded the newer Glitch kernels to experiment with.

under volting helps stability.. I use -50 for everything above 1ghz.. Your phone may vary

Yeah, locking and rebooting was while using the older version of Glitch v12. With the 9/15 dated Glitch I'm at 1300 now with the following settings:
Deadline / ondemand
200 - 1300
1300 -25
1200 -25
1000 -50
800 -50
400 -75
200 -75
1.2GHz is the best I say if you want good battery with a higher frequency. 1.4GHz is the best for anyone who uses their phone alot. Samsung did add 1.2GHz overclock in their source.

Things that make you go, Hmmm?
For some reason, every time I accessed the keyboard for Google+, it hung, then froze, and 3 of the four times rebooted. The fourth time I needed to remove the battery to reboot. So I re-flashed MIUI 1.9.16 (effectively removing Glitch) and have 0 problems.
Bummer, I like Glitch too.
I'm in the same boat, however they redone the latest glitch merge and posted it last night so I'm thinking we'll be back in good times

i'm on jt's 9/12 with miui 1.9.16 and wondering if I can / should overclock and undervolt it. I'm just trying to maximize battery life at this point.

You wouldn't want to use my voltages, I put everything way lower than anybody else does or recommends and am just lucky that it is stable for me but it causes the sleep of death for anyone else.
For comparison, just run JT's kernel for a bit and then flash glitch and try it... once you play with OC/UV and voodoo color you won't be able to go back. (you'll be able to but you'd have to be insane.)
