Hi All, hopefully im posting this in the right place. I've searched and cant find anything similar. Been a user here for a while, but first time posting a question, so please go easy on me! lol
I recently bought a USB OTG cable for my SGS2, and since then i've been plugging pretty much every USB device i have into it to see if it works or not, with varying degrees of success.
Tonight i had the thought of plugging my logitech Z305 usb speaker in and trying it out, and to my amazement it kind of works lol The volume buttons on the Z305 control the media volume on my phone, and i can hear the speakers are active, as there is dead air. When playing music, it plays through the phone speaker, but not through the Z305. I've read that some usb devices require more power, and may work through a powered hub.
I guess what im asking, is has anybody tried this, is there any possibility this might work? Thanks in advance!
A month later, im googling the same topic and find this thread lol
About 5 mins ago, i finally cracked this and got it to work with my iconia tablet, then tested it on my S2 and it works!
USB provides power, obviously, and by simply using a 3.5mm male to male cable, plugged into the device and into the Z305 and i now essentially have a portable stereo! Just thought i would share, considering all the interest i generated from my OP lol

Hey XDA. I recently upgraded my phone to a Motorola Photon 4g.
My problem is this:
The phone has a usb input and micro hdmi input.
I bring my phone with me, almost everywhere; however, because I spent a lot of my time at the gym (24 hr fitness), my battery gets low and I cannot keep the phone on long enough (unless airplane mode) without it dying.
My gym has the Nike + Ipod hookups which are mainly dedicated for charging iphones and ipods and also used for video/audio support.
I was wondering, is there an adapter for a male iphone/ipod to hdmi or micro hdmi which I can use to charge my Photon at the gym (even if I cannot get audio/video? I think I have seen some male pin ipod/ipone pin adapters for regular hdmi, and I figured I could then get a regular hdmi to to micro hdmi adapater to see if that would be an adequate work-around?
I'd love to at the "very least" charge my phone at the gym, but my main concern is compatibility issues and/or if the use of multiple adapters may cause voltage or charge/related issues (e.g.: overheating? or future problems down the line?) A while back, I saw a project for a serial to usb DIY project that may work?: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/8245
Can anyone offer some advice? Last thing I want to do is brick my phone.
Even a bluetooth or wifi male ipod/iphone pinned adaper to my phone might be cool also? Any advice?
Thank you so much.

You can't charge your phone through the micro HDMI port, only through the micro USB port. Now there is no reason why you can't convert an ipod adapter back to USB but I'm not sure if they make anything like that. You'd probably have to build the cable yourself from multiple parts.

Hmm....I could be wrong but thought one would need an MHL port to charge via HDMI.
I can't offer you a solution to the ipod adapter issue. However, instead of spending money and time trying to modify something to work, might just get a portable battery charger. I have the Splash Intense one and it charges my phone fairly quickly and can do it about 3 times before it needs recharged. Plus, I can charge 2 devices at once if I want to. The other nice thing about this is it can be used anywhere and I even tether it to my phone and put both in my pocket. This way my phone is always on me and charges at the same time.
If this is something you are interested in: http://www.energizerpowerpacks.com/us/products/xp4001/ or just search Amazon for different units.
Sorry if this info doesn't help you.
Hey there, i have tried gathering information about this subject and it seems all threads always lead to this announcement:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/06/29/galaxy-s-iii-new-mhl-connector-also-enables-usb-on-go/
Short: Samsung have changed to an 11 Pin-out to enable USB OTG and MHL Hdmi out at the same time. I purchased an original HDTV Adapter (EPL-3FHUBEGSTD) which as far as i can reliably count indeed has about 11 connectors inside the USB connector that goes into the phone.
Now, i can get HDMI out just fine, but ONLY when i also connect the MHL adapter to a power source (a PC USB Port will do fine), however i have also read, that the phone is able to power the MHL adapter itself but obviously would not be charged then (no surprises there). This does not work however.
Further, connecting a USB OTG cable to the micro usb port on the MHL adapter does nothing. No notification and no devices connecting. No power either, since the LED on my USB Hub does not light up as it should. Connecting any devices to the hub does nothing to change that situation. If i leave out the MHL adapter and connect the USB OTG cable directly to the phone, everything works perfectly. I have tried this with 2 different OTG cables so they are not the problem.
This is an original genuine HDTV Adapter for our phones, which according to that post should be working fine with USB OTG.
AFAIK, this topic --does-- come up more frequently now as i can find a few more discussions about it, albeit none really helpful:

That wiki entry is the most interesting link as it definitely states that using MHL and USB OTG simultaneously is possible and is also the reason why the 5 pin layout was changed to an 11 Pin layout.
Looking forward to reading your replies!
the ability to use MHL and OTG simultaneously would give the S3 so much more purpose. It is powerful enough to replace a desktop computer used only for light stuff like browsing and watching videos, and even simple gaming. If samsung made a dock like the one for the motorola atrix I'm convinced they will broaden their target group. The atrix got everything right with this but is inferior hardware wise. I love the idea of a one device for everything concept. Unfortunately it doesn't rhyme very well with the growth society.
Love the MHL and the OTG is even better only after I got the correct cables as the cables changed on S3 to the S2 version, unlimited space for watching films on my phone is now awesome and even better connecting it to to the TV just need a good dock,
is there perhaps any expert advise on this? According to multiple sources it should work but really doesnt. Did i buy the wrong mhl adapter?
I think they will only both work together when being used with an MHL enabled tv. That way the power comes from the tv and the usb on the adapter can be used for the usb-otg cable.

But if i connected the MHL with the s3. Would sound come out of my phone AND my TV or just my TV. If it justs comes out of my TV, then can i hook up my bluetooth headphones and listen to my video or it would not allow me?
Thanks

Ah ok sorry! Afaik you should be able to choose your headphones as primary audio source in the bluetooth settings. I know I can choose what I want to be output to my bluetooth headset, but I don't own an MHL adapter so I don't know about that. Someone with one should be able to try it, and if they don't own a bluetooth headset/pair of headphones they could try with wired ones and see what happens.

I have recently received an MHL connector (5 pin type) and the samsung 11 to 5 pin adapter for it. I can confirm that if I plug my OTG cable into it, and then into my powered USB hub, I can get the MHL to work just fine, both video and audio. The OTG cable powers it just fine, but does NOT allow me to use other devices attached to the USB hub.
I am still researching. I suspect you need to bring all 11 pins off the phone with a splitter of some sort, or possibly wire data lines through the MHL. Probably not with the 5 pin MHL connector and 11 to 5 pin adapter, but with the full 11 pin MHL adapter. I am not up to that level of hardware hacking. I suspect whoever does it first can sell a BUNCH of them!
Oh, and I have a Moto Lapdock for my Raspberry Pi, and would love to hook my S3 to it too!

Has anyone tried to connect Creative Sound Blaster E5 or Sound Blaster X G5 portable sound cards? It can be a very interesting result.

Sound blaster x G5 DOES work on some android devices
Skip to the end to avoid my long pre-amble. Refer to it if you run into issues using the provided steps though. I picked up a sound blaster x G5 on sale at Best Buy for like seventy bucks and was super stoked to hook it up to my moto G4. No dice and after some research and trying it with a powered otg adapter I abandoned the endeavour. Fast forward 4 months and I finally get around to replacing the broken digitizer on an lg gpad f 8.0 v495. Not the entire LCD mind you, just the broken glass digitizer. First attempt doing this on any device ever and it was every bit as hair raising as you might think. From what I understand this is a pretty obscure tablet but it's got great wifi reception and a full size USB port on top independent of the micro USB charging port on the bottom. I can't be certain but I think this is the key to getting the sound blaster x G5 to act as an external USB dac because by all accounts I have come across this should not work. The v495 runs lollipop 5.0.1 and is rooted. Again not sure if rooting is a crucial part of getting this DAC to run as an external USB dac. It was a hassle getting this tablet rooted and supersu installed. I think it was kingroot I originally used to root it but kingroot is crap imho and I wanted supersu on there which I managed to do after quite a bit of hassle. Apparently doing what I did to get supersu can brick your v495 as not a lot has been done with this tablet in the community as from what I gather it is pretty obscure but I'd be happy to help anyone trying to get supersu up and running. Anyhow what you need to do is get a powered USB hub that takes 5v 2amp external power and plug that into the full size USB port. For me I tried three USB 2.0 hubs with external power between one and two amps of external power, no dice on those ones. Ive tried two different USB 3.0 hubs both with 2 amp power plugged into wall socket or power inverter in a car and both worked, even the Walmart onn brand one meant for use with PS4. So far power banks have not worked and I've tried several. It doesn't always start putting out sound right away and I still don't have it 100% figured out, sometimes it takes some unplugging and plugging back in to get audio output from the G5 but once it's going it doesn't cut out and sounds really, really good at least compared to the fiio k1/a1 combo I was using prior though that is still a good combination especially for the price. I use this in my car with a Belkin rockstar 5-way splitter one line going to fiio a1 headphone amp to the aux jack for car stereo and the other line going directly to a Polk audio home theater subwoofer meant for home theater use plugged into a second power inverter. Odd setup? Yup. Cost effective and great sound? Yup. 3.5mm splitters in my experience are notorious for having the timing be off for different outputs and this has been a huge hassle, I've got several and out of two Belkin rockstars only one with two ports of five sync up evenly. Picked up a foil e07k which has two 3.5mm outputs to solve this but it hasn't arrived yet. Possible both line outs on the G5 may solve this too. I am continuing trying to work out the kinks in this setup to have the G5 start outputting the sound without a bunch of u plugging nonsense and just put picked up a high quality USB 3.0 powered hub and will post any further results I get. Here are the STEPS: 1- plug in power supply to USB 3.0 hub. 2- plug in USB 3.0 hub to full size USB port on top of tablet. 3- plug in a flash drive to USB 3.0 hub 4- plug in the G5 to USB 3.0 hub. If it lights up and stay lit with no flashing of the red X you should be in business. If you get no sound output start unplugging and plugging things back in at some point you should get audio output from the G5. Having the tablet charging simultaneously seems to help but isn't necessarily required. Same with having a flash drive plugged into the hub. You can also try having the flash drive plugged into the full size port on the G5, android will be able to access it in either case. Headphone amp on line out(s) from G5 may also help. I'll be updating after further testing. Also, it's a good idea to program some presets on the G5 by using the software provided for windows and Mac, I ran into bizarre sounding music the first time I got this working on the tablet because the WE settings were all over the place when it came to music. Took some trial and error by is easy to correct.

Hi everyone, I need your help.
A couple of days ago one of the ear peaces of the original Leeco headphones died because of wear and tear to the cable. I quickly opened amazon and found "Huawei 55030088 Headphones Type C, White" which seemed good enough for my needs. Sadly when I opened the box an hour ago and trying them nothing happened. It's like they are not even plugged in. The sound is coming from the speakers. I've tried several apps and rebooting as well and it didn't work. I am currently running DU v11.7.2 (7.1.2) with kernel Blackscreen 3.18.31. I was wondering if it's a compatibility issue.
Please help me unravel this mystery.
Best regards, Mysaka.
Heyyo, hmm it could need extra entries in audio files in order to work or it could require something else... By chance do you have a PC with a Type-C port? Please see if it works on there if yes otherwise maybe please try with a Type A to C adapter.
Otherwise? You could always attempt to revert to EUI ROM and see if it works there... If it does? Then we know there's definitely some kind of compatibility issue that will need to be resolved.
Unfortunately I don't have a USB c port on the PC or adaptor. Thanks for the idea, will try it this weekend and report the results.
Try this:
-plug the USB c adapter to the phone
-whait around 5-10 seconds
-unplug it than plug it upside down
This usually works for me and if it works for you than you need to do this every time.
