My captivate recently took a dump. Shuts off when connected via usb. I found a vibrant on craigslist for $125.00
I was wondering if i can unlock it to run on AT&T
if someone can post some tutorial links id really appreciate it. I have to go pick up the vibrant in a couple hours so i need to know asap.
I have a Vibrant working on AT&T. The only drawback is that your data (if you get data) will fluctuate depending on where you're going. On one block, I get 4g and on another I'd get edge. This is because the Vibrant has 900/1900/2100 bands and AT&T uses 850/1900 MHz bands. Because the Vibrant only has 1 of the bands, your data connection is prone to fluctuate.
Concerning your question, all you need to do is Root the Vibrant and you will have a working Vibrant on AT&T. If in any case you wanted to load a custom ROM or Kernel, you can find that in the other sections. Hope this helps.
is your new vibrant on 2.2 or 2.1 update-1
rooting the vibrant is very easy bud. if you get confused pm or leave a comment in here. unlocking the vibrant is very easy as well if you search you will find the galaxy s_unlock apk
is there a way to lock the baseband to be 1900 ? theres an app for the moto defy
I have never looked for it but I know that the vibrant only has the 900/1900/2100 and uses the 1900 one for data. It seems that most of ATT's towers are 1900 and I assume the phone knows to use the 1900 one.

Hello,
I recently bought a HTC HD2 and gotten unlocked to work with my ATT sim card also I had someone install the 2.2 Froyo Android software using Cyanogen Mod 6. Since I had the phone I have only been using Edge network and I know for sure we have 3g coverage. How can I get my 3G network to work on my phone? Please help. I am a newb when it comes to cell phones.
Thanks
Matt
someone correct me if i am wrong but the 3g bands for att and t-mo are different so even if you have 3g coverage you would only get edge. For faster speeds youll have to use wifi.
Do you have a Telstra-branded HD2? IIRC, Telstra uses the same 3G bands as AT&T. In that case you should be able to get 3G. Otherwise, the unbranded & T-Mo branded HD2s wouldn't work with AT&T 3G.

Unless you have the Telstra HD2 (there will be a T in an oval on the back bottom cover), you won't get 3G on ATT. The Telstra model is the only one with the ATT 3G band (the 850mhz UMTS band).
You will ALSO need to have 850mhz ATT coverage in the areas where you live and travel to get 3G on that model.
Hope this helps...
Hi!
I was wondering if there is a way to change that? Installing a new ROM, a software or something!! I bought the TMo HD2 and brought it to South America. Here we use the 850 MHz frequency for 3G, and I just found out the HD2 works with 3G networks in the 1700 and 2100 MHz frequencies =( Is there a way I can change that ???

I checked and there is no T on my phone or cover. But I have cyanogen Mod 6, I was wondering if anyone else has this problem.

[Q] Do we know the extent of the AT&T-friendly UMTS hardware in the T-Mobile Vibrant?
So as a lot of you know, the T-Mobile U.S. version of the Samsung Vibrant turned out to have hardware support for AT&T's 3G. But from reading user comments, it sounds like the T-Mobile Vibrant only has UMTS 1900, and not UMTS 850 as well. Obviously this isn't a problem if you've only got 1900 in your area, but I'm pretty sure we do have UMTS on 850 in my city.
I'm wondering if anyone with the T-Mobile Vibrant has tried using the extra 3G band(s?) and can confirm which are present. Is it 1900 and 850, or just 1900? Further, does anyone know how can I check to see which frequency AT&T provides 3G on in my city (short of relying on the clueless CSRs at my local retail store)? I've got a buddy with a Nexus One on AT&T, is there a quick way for him to see what frequency the UMTS tower he's connected to is using?
In the interest of completeness, I'll cover the questions that I'm sure will get asked so that folks don't **** up the thread with them.
Why not just get an AT&T Captivate?
Handful of reasons. I prefer the Vibrant's aesthetic, but more importantly because AT&T doesn't have T-Mobile Vibrant IMEIs on file. This means you can add and drop data at your own discretion instead of being required to use it, and it also means that their system will treat it as a dumbphone. Definitely a perk.
Why not just get a Galaxy S Vibrant from Bell in Canada? It definitely has 850 and 1900.
This is what I'll end up doing if the T-Mobile one doesn't work out, but it's a pretty big pain in the ass to get Canadian phones shipped down here whereas the T-Mobile version is readily available. Also, no warranty!
Thanks guys.
From what Ive read, the Vibrant works on 850/1700/1900/2100. --See edits below--

Band (frequency): 850 MHz;900 MHz;1800 MHz;1900 MHz;UMTS: Band I (2100);UMTS: Band IV (AWS);UMTS: Band IV (1700/2100)

It doesn't work on WCDMA 850. Doesn't support it. Try selecting it only and put a AT&T sim in and see if you get 3G. Yea you won't, then try selecting 1900 only and what happens? Yea exactly.
Well, I dont have one in front of me to experiment with my AT&T and T-Mobile SIMs, Im just going off the side of the box and whats listed in the menu (both say 850). I currently have a Captivate and a Fascinate, but Im looking into getting the Vibrant instead for a number of reasons so I was just poking around. Sorry if I was passing on bad info.
~T.J.
EDIT: I thought I read of some people getting it to work on 850, but that could be wrong. Im looking again... Could it be there just isn't 850 coverage where you tried it and instead was 1900 coverage? These are OLD maps though...

Because the T-Mobile 3G network in the U.S. is listening for 3G data in the 1700MHz and 2100MHz bands, it’s the only U.S. network with which the Nexus One phone can communicate. AT&T’s 3G network listens for phones transmitting 3G traffic in the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands, which the Nexus One cannot do. All it can do is send 2G traffic in those bands, so it does, making a slower data experience for those using the Nexus One in Ma Bell’s mobile network.

Just because the it's listed in software doesn't mean it can work. The Fascinate is a CDMA phone and your gonna tell me because you see the bands listed in software that it will work on a gsm network? Really? Either way I'm not trying to get you down. Just saying if that were possible, it would have been mention already. To conclude though, it all comes down to hardware support, the software is just mirrored on all galaxy s phones. The Vibrant only does 1700/1900/2100 for 3G. The 850 band would have benefit you better for in building support, but it's not supported.

That picture is from the screen of a Vibrant. Notice the T-Mobile branding at the ear speaker? But, I do understand about the listing in the software not necessarily having the hardware. Also, I edited my post above.

Dug this all up from the FCC fairly easily just to see for myself.

Heres the test report from the FCC (showing 850 Mhz GSM):

Heres the rest results for the Specific Absorption Rate (showing 850 Mhz GSM around page 25):

My conclusion? Id say its capable because it has all the hardware (since they were able to test it), but depends on the network around you. That, or they literally software blocked it for some reason.

EDIT: Ok, had to DL the PDF files and I temporarily uploaded them on my web site server for now. Dont know how long I will leave them there however.
850 gsm != 850 umts
D'oh! Talk about needing to sleep! As I said I'm just here to learn too as I want to pick up a vibrant, but apparently I need to sleep before thinking and posting. Sorry about that!

Thanks for all the responses, guys, I really appreciate the thorough feedback.
Sounds like 850 is a bust, which is really disheartening. There's loads of T-Mobile Vibrants on eBay in the $340-380 ballpark, but it's going to cost closer to $500 to get a Bell Vibrant down here.
yeah the phone supports 850GSM but not 850WCDMA/UMTS/3G

oh! teaches me to multitask while in class
I may have gotten in over my head and am wondering if anyone can advise if I just blew it or if there is something I can do.
I am a Cincinnati Bell Wireless (CBW) customer and am less than satisfied with the Motorola XT720 and Samsung Galaxy S.
I looked at the specs for the Atrix (3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 ) vs the Samsung (3G Network HSDPA 1700 / 2100 ) and since I thought CBW worked on 1700 and 2100) I thought the Atrix may work on it as I was under the impression that if any one of the 3G bands matched the phone would work.
As a side note - part of my issue with the Samsung is the GPS issues. Part of it is more the issue that CBWs 3G network is not super strong and hence I am on edge even in their 3G coverage area.
Anyhow, I can only get an edge connection. While roaming this week end I did get 3G from time to time. The simple answer may be that I screwed up and bought a phone that I can't get to work with Cincinnati Bell Wireless, but I thought I would place a post out here to see if I am overlooking something. Something odd like AT&T locking out the 2100 or something that there may be a hack to open up which would let the phone work with CBW on 3G or something like that.
If anyone has ideas I would appreciate it. The Atrix is an awesome phone. Not sure that I am ready to pay the AT&T rates over what I have with CBW, especially without unlimited data so I thought I'd put a post out here and see if there is something I can try.
Thanks!
Hey man,
Im in the Cincinnati Market as well and have been with ATT for about, well since they were Ameritech. (long time) i have the Atrix and Lapdock and have been researching switching to CBW for the savings of about 100 per month for my 5 phone plan. I think that the 3g should work but havent verifited that yet. i have unlocked my phone and am taking it to the florence mall CBW to try a demo phone sim to see if i can get 3g. i currently average 1.5 mg download and .5 up load, i have noticed a difference in the towers, in some areas i can get up to 4.5 mb download and 1.5 upload on ATT 3g towers, My ATT guy says that the 4g towers will be turned on in September. should be way faster then. so i will let you know what i find out when i try the CBW sim. but im still unsure about the switch because CBW girl says their 4g is a ways off.
Good luck.
Thanks. Look forward to hearing back. At the moment i cant get it to work and cbw says it won't work.

Any updates on whether the Atrix would work on CBW? I've been debating if I should switch over to Cincinnati Bell when my Verizon contract is up.
Right now all I can say is that voice and edge work but not 3G data. Personally I am getting fed up with some of CBWs practices and policies. The best i have to say is they have an unlimited data option.

The 2100 3g band is for Europe only. The atrix will not work anywhere in north America on the 2100 band and it does not have the 1700 band. Unless your carrier lets you roam on att you will not be able to use 3g

I have seen many Thread about I9000 trying to convert T959 modem to use the T-mobile network. What i couldn't find is from T959 to I9000 to make it to the international version.
I have the T-Mobile Vibrant T-959 unlocked with ECLAIR. I know that the network band of this phone is 850/900/1800/1900. i found the result according to Samsung website. I know in another post it was said that it is hardware issue but the hardware is 850/900/1800/1900.
I live in the United Arab Emirates and the network band here is 900/1800 similar to the European or Asian Network. but the T-mobile uses 850/1900 so i couldn't get 3G or any kind of internet connection here, unless i find a WiFi connection. I need the 3G connection on the move.
I want to know is there any way to change the the modem band to I9000? so that i can use a custom rom like Darky which is Stable according to many users.
I would never be using the phone on US T-mobile or any Network in the US.
You might think this Question is redundant and has already been answered but i search every where but it comes back empty.
Your feedback would be highly Appreciated!!!!
I don't think you can actually change your phone's bands.
However, an unlocked US T-Mobile Vibrant should be working on 3G. According to Wikipedia, the two 3G networks in UAE (du and Etisalat?) use the 2100MHz band, which should be supported.
Thanks for the reply, i tried everything but nothing worked.
One more question to ask, what will happen if i flash i9000 rom and radio on a T-mobile phone. Or should i just flash it with a T-mobile rom without changing the radio, and if the sim gets locked I will just unlock?
this is the final question to ask.
Don't know if this helps but I use my unlocked vibrant in the uk, so if European bands are the same...it should work.
You can change roms and I would recommend you should but you can't use an i9000 modem.
Do you have a Sim with a data plan?
Can you text or make calls?

Yes i can make a calls and send Text but no internet connection. I just bought data plan for my sim.
So i Should get Vibrant custom rom not the I9000 rom?
And thank you Guys for your replay, I hope this tread will help other confused users on XDA
I would like everyone to know that it is not good thing to change there modem from T959 to i9000 your phone will brick never do it.
I just flashed a new rom from Trigger 3.2 which upgraded to Froyo 2.2 and i put in the settings for the Access Point and it works perfectly.
So if you have any difficulty accessing 3g or HSDPA connection on android 2.1 just upgrade it and it will work.
How did you conclude you're not on 3G? Do you get EDGE or GPRS internet connection?
So i need the 1800 mhz how can i do?
Flash a i9000 modem and see if it works.

There is the possibility to brick the phone?
Hello,
I have 2 unlocked vibrant phones working in Mexico using Telcel carrier, Telcel uses the same bands as ATT, I have a question, is possible to change the modem to use the 850mhz(3G) instead of Tmobile? I mean, is possible to modify the vibrant model to work in ATT 3g? I know they sell the captivate but for me the vibrant looks better
Thanks for you help

I am pretty sure that if you use a Captivate modem with a Vibrant 3g will work on ATT.
AFAIK, it's not possible to use the Vibrant with the 850MHz band for 3G. I have a Vibrant on AT&T and it works fine using the stock Vibrant modem with AT&T's 1900MHz 3G Band, but not the 850MHz one. Also, I don't think the Captivate modem works with the Vibrant, and even if it did, I doubt it would change the supported frequencies.

If you try it I am pretty sure it would, remember that thread about the modems and how GT-I9000 modems work on Vibrant. Well, one user said that he had had edge all along with his Vibrant then he tried a Captivate modem and wallah 3G.
Well I'm not sure what he was doing, but I've had 3G with a Vibrant on AT&T regardless of which vibrant modem I was on. I had tried this long ago and was experimenting with it. I turned off all of the bands except the WCDMA 850 one, but then it said "No Signal."
And like I said, the Vibrant DOES do 3G on AT&T, but it does it using AT&T's 1900MHz WCDMA band, instead of the 850MHz, but according to the Wikipedia, the OP's carrier is only using 850MHz, which I have found to not be supported in the Vibrant unless something changed recently
