Just because bootloader is unlocked doesn't mean we'll get ics automatically from devs. There's a lot more that taking ics and slapping it into another device.

Since Ice Cream Sandwich won't be released until late this year or early next year (yeah, I know they're say Q4 2011), I doubt their will be a MOT/AT&T release for Atrix.

isn't there a 2 year rule with updates?
since atrix came out this year, doesn't that mean it'll be supported by ICS?
They will stop the update for the phone, not more than one year when it released?
Maaaaaaaaany lower in power phones, will be released and getting upgrade on ICS,
or may released with ICS.
I understand to stop updates, when a phone's power, isnt enough.
But not with a dual core.
Everybody will switch to Sensation, SGS, if they dont, so i think and hope they will
EDIT: btw, when ICS hits, xda will open sections for TVs? Rooting and hacking TV's?

Well if we get CM7, which we will, we're essentially guaranteed a souped up ICS when Google releases it, aren't we? CM will update to CM8 I'm sure to accommodate, and we're likely to be an officially supported CM phone when it's done.
We'll probably be using different phones by the time Ice Cream Sandwich comes out
We'll get ice cream stock or custom. I think that moto will release 2.4 for atrix. That's a must do for them.

If it's coming out in half a year, then I seriously doubt it.
I like the Atrix and consider it very future proof.
With the unlocked bootloader and constant developer support I have no doubt it can hold out as a top phone for 2 more years.
I think the atrix is futureproof in all ways i can think of, i have yet to see an app that really takes use of dual core, and the tegra is just starting to take off.
I don't think we'll get it from moto but cm8 I'm will bring it our way.

It is scheduled for November 2011, with the release of Nexus Prime.
Earlier today, Dan Morrill of the Android Team posted a message to the Android Building Google group updating the status of code availability due to recent server downtime.
“We plan to release the source for the recently-announced Ice Cream Sandwich soon, once its available on devices.”

that could be months away before you even hear about an official release from them. i think our dev's here have a better shot at getting a fully functional rom out (as far as a timeframe goes)

dude they have always done this. it will be pushed to AOSP the day of or after the phone is released. just like with FroYo and Gingerbread. Honeycomb is the only exception to the rule.
So yeah depending on your defn of soon, itll be out in November once the actual phone is released. NOT a moment before though b/c thats not how they do things.

i would assume manufacturers have special access to this source code months before release. my guess is we get the ota a month and half after the nexus is released. What im wondering is how htc will integrate sense with ICS? will they remove parts of sense since ICS is more than adequate?
HTC via facebook
Since Google unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich earlier this week, HTC has been looking closely at the new OS's features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans. We're a recognized industry leader in providing fast and consistent upgrades to our Android devices (see what Engadget had to say about our upgrades: http://engt.co/qMb9nQ), and Ice Cream Sandwich will be no different.
Upgrades require a careful balance of hardware and software to ensure the best possible performance and usability, so please stay tuned as we assess our product portfolio. Our goal is to upgrade as many HTC devices as possible and we'll be sharing details on specific devices and timing in the coming weeks!

As far as custom ROMs go, we're close to getting a bootable ICS sdk port and when source drops, we should have a stable (no 4G, sound, camera, 3D, etc.) ICS ROM weeks after.
Cyanogenmod 9 alphas should also be here around a month or two after the source drops.
But as far as an HTC update goes, I think we'll be seeing it in February-March.

Bootable SDK port is not at all what I was talking about. That's gonna be a butchered up mess...
I agree with you about CM9 alpha builds.. but that goes along with what I said about not getting it this year. The source won't drop until the Galaxy Nexus is released..which is in November.
I don't really see how you can call a rom with no sound, camera, 4G, 3D stable tho lol. It likely will have MMS issues as well. That isn't at all stable.
So yea, don't expect anything ICS flavored this year other than something you can boot up and play around with, then wipe off when you actually need your phone =p
I'm ok with it tho, I would like it ASAP but I understand it takes time... and I'm not into flashing anything that's ..well, butchered.
I think the real concern will be how much HTC killsoff the look and feel of ICS with Sense.

As much as I don't see them leaving it very vanilla, at some point they are going to have to realize that people are getting tired of Sense and change it up.

It took longer than 1.5 months for GB, You MIGHT get an alpha but I doubt it. There are 2 major holidays left that are going to impact development, and we don't even have cm7 on our 3Ds yet aside from an alpha.
We can debate it but none of us really know. I'm just making a guess based on past experiences. I'm fine with it regardless tho, ICS looks nice visually, but, that's about all I care about in the new android 4.0. The last android update I wanted was 2.2, since then they have been kinda meh

Having used ICS on the captivate, it truly is an update worth switching devices for. However, I'm pretty happy with the I777 so I will just wait. Android updates that were actually really good: Froyo, Honeycomb, and ICS. The rest were just hyped too damn much and gingerbread is the worst of all of them (imho).

For one, it's not just ICS when Jellybean comes out, you're going to get it much quicker than anyone else. And also, it's the purest form of the Android version minus any bloatware each manufacturer puts on the phone, which can be either a pro or a con, but overall, the bloatware has been a con in the past.
IMO, Gingerbread was a very good update, Froyo didn't seem that special when I finally got it for my S7. The biggest improvement was non-broken radio firmware, which had nothing to do with Android version.
Gingerbread had significant power management improvements.

What the hell is your problem? Name one phone other than the Nexus line that has received ICS officially.
HTC hasn't released any updates yet.
Motorola hasn't released any updates yet.
Sony has only released betas (I applaud them for putting out prereleases)
Asus has only pushed it to one tablet (easier to port HC tablets due to HC being a newer codebase and not having to deal with the RIL) and that was an utter disaster
So far, my experience with ICS is that it's not an improvement over Gingerbread. I haven't been able to see any significant positive improvement - some parts of the UI are a bit shinier, but the gapps user interface is clunker than it was in GB. ICS has some good improvements on tablets, but for phones - not so nice.

First of all I said that I APPRECIATE the devs!!!! And I never said that the roms were official. Almost all HTC and LG phones have ICS roms. I left t-mobile with the htc sensation and believe me that phone runs 300% better now that it is running ICS. And by the way Entropy it is no disrespect to any dev by what I said, I am rocking your Kernel right now (Excellent job). I am pissed at Samsung and them only. Our phone is supposed to be a flagship phone so what the hell is the holdup?
If you can't wait then just go get the G Nexus. These questions have been brought up and beaten to death. Just don't be surprised when Ics finally drops for our device and our Roms are superior than most. GS2 surely has the hardware to run prety much anything smoothly and dev community is strong here

I'm wondering what to do about Ice Cream Sandwich when it's released for the Thunderburp, I can un-root and install a stock OTA ROM or I can wait until the devs start releasing their ROMs.
To some extent, it depends on timing, if the devs get ICS for the T'belch soon, I'll go that route but I'm thinking the OTA might hit first so...
What would you do? Unroot and get the OTA or wait for the modded ICS ROMs to start popping up?
Im pretty sure we will have it before it goes OTA and have rooted roms ready. I will have a stock rooted ICS rom out as soon as one of my connections gets me the ruu.
Much appreciated but.... the RUUs seem very hard to come by.
I know there are at least two (probably many more) ROMs waiting for a workingi radio but they've been waiting for awhile now!

I think Moto will stick to the timeline they have posted. ICS has been in development for the Photon for a while now and from all I have read with the re-structuring of Moto Mobility it seems they are pushing to get devices on the latest Android releases. Sounds to me like Google wants Moto to get on an update schedule similar to what the Nexus devices are on. This should not be a problem with Moto not having to support so many devices in the future.
I do hope that if/when ICS does come to the Photon it is a better release than what other manufacturers have pushed out. Everyone I have heard from that has gotten ICS hates it and wants GB back. Of course the best bet is to wait until our developers get the proper drivers and incorporate the missing pieces into custom roms and run those.

I would PM Joker or Th3Bill with that link, just in case they missed it.
i don't care whether we get the official ICS, or even the drivers from another phone as long as the drivers are taken, and can be used towards all of the problems with the custom ICS and JB roms i will be happy. Hopefully if we cant get drivers from another phone the official ICS will get rolled out soon.
This is a seriously dead topic that's been discussed over and over and over again. 12 months in a year, 4 quarters in a year. 12 divided by 4 is 3. Each quarter is three months long. Q3 ends with September. Q4 begins with October. Atrix ICS before end of September. Photon ICS before end of December. Atrix and photon = same hardware. Meaning, our jb and ICS ROMs will be perfectly stable shortly after the atrix ICS gets released.
^^^^^^
i was just about to say. Q4 starts in october
captivate ics wont really change terribly much. look at the xoom ics or even gtab 10.1. all used diff camera sensors/wrappers so sure the chipset is the same.. but the crap that is needed for stable isnt :/
unless something has drastically changed since the last time i talked to joker the camera was the last big hurdle?

This is a seriously dead topic that's been discussed over and over and over again. 12 months in a year, 4 quarters in a year. 12 divided by 4 is 3. Each quarter is three months long. Q3 ends with September. Q4 begins with October. Atrix ICS before end of September. Photon ICS before end of December. Atrix and photon = same hardware. Meaning, our jb and ICS ROMs will be perfectly stable shortly after the atrix ICS gets released.

So if i would have left out that first sentence I wouldn't be an ass? It was a factual statement, not a shot at you. I see you actively contributing around here quite often, I was surprised that a regular such as yourself would start a thread posing a question in which there are many other threads that have the answer. A little reading wouldn't hurt is all im saying.

captivate ics wont really change terribly much. look at the xoom ics or even gtab 10.1. all used diff camera sensors/wrappers so sure the chipset is the same.. but the crap that is needed for stable isnt :/

actually i read a discussion somewhere, they are not the same, cos tablets are based on Harmony board (tegra 250 T20), and mobiles on Ventana (tegra 250 AP20H) and some crappy little difference between them didnt let the devs do that.

Those tablets use a different type of Tegra 2, that's why. Photon/ Atrix= AP20H, Xoom/ Galaxy Tabs= T20. The captivate uses the same chip set as these Moto Tegra devices. People from the Atrix forums have started looking into the captivate leaks for anything, just be patient and wait for the news
Sent from my undervolted, underclocked, power saving Motorola Atrix.
understandable that its the same tegra chipset but that doesnt mean its the same camera module. this is a different manufacturer we are talking about (samsung at that so it actually has a decent camera unlike moto)
Unless you're stuck with a locked bootloader or fortunate enough to be in a WiMax market, head over to the developer's forum and load one of the many ICS or JB based ROMs. Joker's CM10 based ROM is as stable or better of an experience than I ever had with factory.
