[Q] Disabling screen sharpening - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm kind new to SGS2, coming from a Milestone background with mostly CM roms (kabaldan is an amazing XDA member!)... it's a very different world indeed... =]
Right now, I got my SGS2 for 2 days, already rooted with CF and just returned to stock KE4 kernel to compare/test battery life and other stuff before choosing a kernel to stick... I'm liking the device a lot, it is powerful and compact, maybe it could replace my standalone music player too (O2)... but one thing really catch my eye in the device's screen and it is hard to ignore, the screen sharpening that happens in the, otherwise beautiful, samoled+ screen... is there any way to disable this "feature". I know many of you may like it, so I'm all for choices, but specially working with feature films and images/display background, this kind of effect (sharpen) really bothers me.
So, if anyone has any info about changing/disabling this effect, I would really appreciate.
Tks.

Ok, I rooted my fascinate and removed the lag, now what is next?

Hi people, I finished rooting my phone, I guess im rooted because I have an icon in apps called super user, i applied the lag fix, now what do I do next?
Man I guess ur in the same boat as quite a few of us. Sit back realx, wait for clockwork, wait for ROMS, and prepare to have fun when all of the previously mentioned items to start appearing and enjoy having the beat hardware available at this point.

you chill.. till the next episode.
We're close. Hang tight.
Next big thing is the official Froyo update, I guess. This thing is already flying so fast, I can't wait to see how Froyo runs on it. I had installed KaosFroyo on my old Droid Eris, which made it actually functional again, but despite that ARMv6 CPU's (or was it ARMv5?) best effort while overclocked to 710MHz, along with the JIT compiler, it just could offer me the experience I was looking for.
Can't wait to see what people can do with the Fascinate, though at this level of performance, I will probably be less likely to install custom ROMS. Plus, the Fascinate ROM has some very nice bells and whistles, like the WiFi/BT/GPS/Airplane on/off buttons on the notification screen, which you don't get with a plain vanilla ROM. Now, if somebody comes out with a Gingerbread ROM, I just might be interested.
I've actually been quite disappointed with performance on this phone, with the exception of games. I'm coming from an Incredible which is dramatically snappier and generally stutter-free, despite the hardware not being as powerful. With the Fascinate I notice stuttering and lag every few screen changes, which is disappointing. I would say the lock screen stutters/lags 50% of the time, maybe more.
At this point, I'm blaming Samsung's software, so I'll try and wait for custom ROMs to resolve this.

Have you tried switching to LauncherPro? That will give you a good speed boost overall. The lag fix should take care of the rest. I saw the same issues as you, which are all gone after these mods.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Yes, I have been running Launcher Pro Plus from the outset. I am rooted and have applied the lag fix. The Incredible was still MUCH faster. Launcher Pro doesn't fix things like the notification bar or lock screen stuttering, or the soft keys not responding immediately after being pressed.
I am going to attempt to move Launcher Pro Plus into the system folder and remove TW-Launcher as one of the other members did to try and improve speed.
The lag fix actually made my phone run worse..installed it..and it ruins like a dream
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
There is no need to move an app to system just to uninstall another one. I use ADW launcher and have uninstalled TW launcher. Keep in mind, when you do the uninstall you must have your other launcher set to default or bad things will happen. After the uninstall the phone will go into a FC fit. Simply reboot and all will be golden.
After removing TW launcher I haven't seen any lag, and I never applied the "lag fix".
Hope that helps

Yeah I figured that was true, I just wanted to make Launcher Pro even more official by making it a SYSTEM app .
I'm going to give it a shot now. Here's to hoping I won't require an Odin restore of any kind...

NOOO WAY!! The Incredible I had doesn't even compare to the speed I'm getting from my Fascinate! The Incredible I even had Froyo on it!! That thing was crap for me.. Lets not get on the topic of battery life...
The battery life on the Incredible was no good, I will agree with you on that. But, in terms of overall system smoothness (remember, NOT games or multimedia), the Fascinate (along with all of the other Galaxy S phones) doesn't play in the same league as the Incredible yet.
In addition to my personal encounters of sluggishness on 2 Fascinates, 1 Vibrant, 1 Captivate, and 1 Epic 4G, a few of the reviews I read mention this problem as well:
"More than once the phone locked up doing what we considered to be basic tasks, such as switching between apps or back to the homescreen. The Fascinate just seemed to stall out, often at the most inconvenient times, and we were left to simply wait until it sorted out whatever memory or processor issues it seemed to be having. Comparatively, a device like the Incredible rarely if ever stalled out on us, even during heavy use."
Engadget, September 7, 2010
"...That’s not to say Samsung has no room for improvement...we still observed a few of the periodic stalls that mar the overall user experience."
Slash Gear, September 7, 2010
"As much as I like the UI I did find some of the menu pops and screen flips to stutter a bit."
Geek, September 17, 2010
It's not like the phone is "slow", it just stutters and holds in places the Incredible never did, like the lock screen, or pulling down the notification bar, or when long pressing to get menus, even with the lag fix, TWLauncher removed, and no live wallpaper (which are tweaks I have done to ALL US flavors of this phone). Even flipping between home screens on the Incredible is noticeably faster than any Galaxy S when both phones have Launcher Pro installed. I think it's just a question of pickiness when it comes to the smoothness of animations. Again, I have noticed these issues on EVERY Galaxy S phone I have encountered, not a single, possibly defective, phone.
I really, really want this phone to live up to it's fancy hardware through development from the great people around here, which is why I will probably keep it as a sort of investment. Here's to hoping the community around it continues to grow!
My Incredible with Froyo does not compare to the Fascinate with Eclair (no lag fix, TW still present but running LauncherPro Plus).
It's not even close.
Battery life on the Fascinate is phenomenal compared to the Incredible. The only thing I miss on the Incredible is the support (duh, it's been out since April 29) and the optical trackpad (makes editing text much easier).

56k colors.

Hi.
Even though I don't post here often I have been browsing the forums thoroughly for half a year now.
This issue has been bothering me since I purchased my X10.
I possess both an ipod 4g and my X10.
Honestly, I bear with most of the flaws of my lovely handheld but some things just annoy me.
It's RIDICULOUSLY slow for it's hardware specs, the interface is just nowhere as snappy as iOS, the colors are bleak and the camera is SLOW. just INSANELY slow.
Taking a stable shot is nearly impossible.
Now I'm running the latest EWJET rom, fully tweaked for better performance and now it's almost bearable but the screen looks like crap, I can clearly see the 56k colors and all the videos look disgustingly bad.
The camera apps, including vignette, camera360 and the default one all slow as hell and I'm quite frankly on the verge of selling the device for a loss.
As odd as it may sound after that long rant, the point of this post is not to complain but to ask for your guidance.
I'm quite emotionally attached to my x10 and the last thing that I want is to sell it.
Is there a solution to some of my bothers? At the very least a solution to the utterly bleak screen?
Thank you for your patience.
Sorry for my relentless ranting.

Yep, upgrade to a custom 2.2 ROM
Perfect example of a speedy ROM that will fix all of your problems: http://android.modaco.com/content/s...miui-iris-1-6-5-froyo-prepare-for-the-future/ (since you have an iPod, you may like this)
No it doesnt matter what rom u use until SE change it you will only ever get 65k. apparently the official gingerbread will have 16 million colours
so it may be a case of manning up until then
its not really fair comparing miui on x10 to an ipod. ipod creams all over us!
i gotta agree with the op the x10s screen response compared to an ipod is terrible trips rom is good though and is worth a look.
the ios is so much faster honestly

do you think this colour upgrade, if it does happen will even help with the screens response?
i love my x10 dont get me wrong but i really get jelous the second i unlock an ipod/phones lockscreen. Its a million times smoother and it follows your finger perfectly. the x10 has great specs on paper but i just dunno why its never felt fast

depends on the touch drivers. As far as I know sony and SE, it might actually get worse.
I can wait for the gingerbread but are there any snappy/fast cam apps?
I just need something that takes more or less focused pics really fast.
The picture quality I currently get is not as good as my 2g Iphone unless I stand perfectly still or lean on something sturdy... I kinda hate it.
And regarding the Miui rom, one of the reasons I chose to buy an android over the iphone is because of the GUI
I cannot stress the importance of getting a rom + kernel that has an unlocked FPS.
I cannot recommend enough this particular rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119508
Get the one with the Custom Kernel. Bare in mind you need baseband 52/49 (5 preferred) to flash the custom Kernel.
You'll thank me later. Trust me This is exactly what you're looking for.

I've been with wolf's rom up until 6.3, the UI occasionally has low frame rates and overall the EWJET is more stable.
The camera mod isn't as good and lacking wifi tethering.

Make sure to use the custom kernel to get 60fps. It makes all the difference.
If you have any problems e.g battery drain or wifi not working or anything. Just let me know I'll try to help.
Install the custom kernel, it makes your x10 way more smoother and don't use **** like live wallpapers, ect.
something i'd suggest you is tripnravers miui rom he have tweaked the screen for better colors and its not baaaad at all ! and something i noticed the stock se roms have more brightness and colors then all custom roms i flashed till now

I'm on BB 52 and using the custom kernel version, does the ROM allow tethering?
Because I'm an avid user of the Tether app, it would be rather difficult without it.
Overall the rom does look smoother, and I like the additional control that the CM roms give you.

[Q] Graphics smoothness issue

Hi guys,
I just bought my Xperia S two days ago outright and unlocked. ($484AUD from JB HI FI for you Aussies reading). My first smartphone was a Samsung Galaxy S back in 2010. I loved that phone - I flashed custom roms, customised the crap out of it, and all that. At the end of 2010, my company gave me an iPhone4 and I was required to use that exclusively - so I sold my Galaxy S on eBay. I've been using the iPhone4 ever since that point, but I missed my Android experience so much that I spent my money on the Xperia S just two days ago.
The reason I purchased the Xperia S is because I really dislike/despise Apple products, especially the iPhone.. Every time I looked at it I felt annoyed and disgusted by its lack of customisability and its lame user interface.
Having shared that with you, I'm having the following issue with the phone…
My graphics always seem to lag/chop/stutter when things are moving around. It's not fluid. This happens when:
• Swiping the lock icon to the right, on the homescreen. (it sorta micro-stutters at least once during the movement animation)
• When swiping through homescreens
• When scrolling up/down a menu (especially the settings menu in the browser).
• Scrolling or zooming in/out in the browser… its just not fluid at all, no matter how complex or basic the website is, flash or no flash.
It feels like CPU/GPU lag. Does anyone else have this issue? I'm pretty anal when it comes to seeing animations run smoothly so it's possible that it happens to all of you, but you just don’t perceive it or care about it -- or maybe its just my phone. I don’t know!
Also I notice that the touch responsiveness is delayed by about 100ms… Anyone else get that? (e.g. Load up the browser. Use your finger to swipe/scroll down the page, and see how there is a delay between when your finger moves and when the page moves.
I've read some people say that their browser runs "Buttery Smooth"… !! Mine is no where near smooth let buttery smooth!
I'm hoping that the coming ICS release will help with this issue, but I'm also surprised that I see no one else complaining about this graphics stuttering. I mean, my old Galaxy S in 2010 was smoother than this and it was only single-core at 1Ghz with 512 RAM.
Some technical details:
Batch: 12W19
Build: 6.0.A.3.73
I've uninstalled all the Sony bloatware that lets me uninstall.
I've tried without a live wallpaper
I've not tried any task killers.
I really like the quality of the screen and want to love the phone, but this speed/performance issue is really bumming me out ;/
So, do you 'xperience this too?
Thanks for your time,
Termus
Use it a few day and it'll stable than now! It's my experience with all Xperias like X10, Arc!
Or maybe try a factory reset and reboot the phone few times.

Thanks guys, i'll give it some more time and reset it.
But i just wonder, is your browser experience nice and smooth? Maybe my hopes are too high, but i'd like to confirm them

No mine is not, and I'm experiencing the same "all-around lag" that you see.
My device has locked bootloader (i'm waiting the ICS update to unlock it, especially coz I need to send it back to Sony due to the yellow tint display) and I hope ICS update will fix this horrible thing before the moment I'll choose to sell my device (really, I don't complain this things, coming from an early2011 SGS2).
PS. BTW I've got enough free ram to run everything smoothly, so it is not Sony-bloatware related.
Ok, while it's sad that you also experience this slowness it's good that someone else has 'fessed up to having it as well.
It makes me wonder... All of these devices are "made" the same, i.e. they have the same hardware. Why would some operate smoothly and others not? It's either that our devices are slow or the everyone else is in deep denial.
If the ICS update doesn't improve my handset's fluidity of graphics I'll probably sell it. I want my Android experience to be silky smooth, and if that's not possible yet, i'll just wait!

This. Or they come from really lagghish terminals so we could have different ideas of what "smooth" could mean, but generally 70% doesn't admit the thing they bought is not as good as they think.
Maybe because you came from an iPhone which has pretty smooth animations compared to some Android phones. My iPod Touch feels slightly smoother than my Xperia S, albeit the slower scrolling.
i kinda forgot bout the stock rom experience, but i surely remember there's no such thing as the lockscreen's slider lag and touch responsiveness is delayed (and 100 ms? really? do you, yourself, have some measurement devices or something?)
now im in doomkernel and ka05.2 sspeed and all the things that u mentioned didnt happened. well, i maybe come from very-very-very-slow phone (LG GT540), but even my friend who has iphone 4s for awhile said that the animations and the smoothness in my phone (XS, ofc) is really smooth, almost the same as his iphone. even with some widgets here and there (his iphone doesnt have widgets, well duh!) and i feel the same too (but what do i know right?)
and he even likes it better browsing with phone rather than his iphone. though i gotta admit than i use the stock browser rarely, i usually use opera mini because of my crappy mobile network's speed. but they both works really well and smooth (pinching, zooming, scrolling)
but though i agree that smoothness is something that cant be measured, it's really objective thing, and maybe my friend just said that because of his kindness to not insult me or something, idk and i dont really care, for me it's just as smooth as his iphone.
so my verdict: your stock rom has issues (though most unlikely), the custom rom has some kind improvement (well ofc, but to have even lag in lockscreen it's kinda really bad for stock rom), there are some apps that make that lags in your rom, or you have faulty phone, you came from the future where everything is at light speed.
do u see the ics leaked video for XS? and how bout your gaming 'xperience?
Try installing MyPhoneExplorer on the phone and let the MyPhoneExplorer PC client monitor the cpu usage in realtime.
so when the lag happend, look at the pc monitor. does the cpu usage spike to 100%?

[Q] XXDLIB Slight Transition Lag?

I have tried a lot of latest roms based on XXDLIB JB. For some instance if you open your settings and open a field in your settings, you can sense that when opening that menu, opening takes swiftly a sense of lag, slowness...Not always though, sometimes I open the menus in the settings and the run perfectly smooth. And just trying after a minute, it kinda slows.
I even tried using Custom kernels with that, yet same result. Is it a kind of defect from Samsung's touchwiz rom? Any solution?
Does turning off animations help at all?
Settings - Developer Options, set window animation scale, animator duration scale and transition animation scale to off.
This happens to ma, and is much more noticeable when i open up the dialer, with a second or two pause, with just the bluish bar at the top (where your keypad, logs, favourites and contacts are). I have animations down to .5, but the problem still persists when i have animations off...
The Samsung based DLIB ROMs that I tried all had crap performance compared to earlier ones, so I went back to a DLI4 I think it was (before moving on to AOKP).
Then its with everyone, this is probably my last samsung device. Im moving back to the Nexus line, I bought it for the sake of a better hardware, and here is ? Nothing that special. As well as that we're not capable of running AOSP roms smoothly because of their Exynos close-sourcing thing....What a shame....I have owned S1, S2, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Nexus, and now the S III. Never used Their Touchwiz Rom anyway, always with AOSP; and now with the devs unable to do anything with Samsung's policy, it's better to own a Nexus.

I feel you man. I feel you. On every single XXDLIB rom! No amount of flashing of kernels, mods, etc. fixes this! I also bought the S3 because of the wonderful hardware it offers, only to know after having bought it, that it's lacking proper support by Samsung.
I'm hearing a lot of gossip about an upcoming nexus. I to am feeling switchy-switchy I think? =\
But if it's LG, as the rumors suggest, I don't think I'll feel so 'switchy' anymore.

My bets are on HTC Nexus 5 A 5 inch rocking screen ! And a NEXUS ! That would amazing ! Purely amazing. Especially that I still suffer today from screen sizes ever since I held a Note, my S III 's 4.8 is average for me hehe ! I would SO LOVE a 5 Inch screen Phone!

[Q] Stuttering on AOSP ROMs

I need to know how noticeable it is?
I'm moving to a GS3 from a GNexus. Naturally, I'd prefer AOKP/CM type ROMs but I've been reading about the stuttering issue because of Samsung not providing updated sources for some of its hardware which prevents devs from fixing these issues.
How/when is the stuttering noticeable?
I've used Samsung ROMs and samsung-based custom ROMs, when I moved to an AOSP ROM my phone felt incredibly faster and more responsive (less stuttering), but you lose some Samsung features (like shaking your phone, resting your palm on it, double tapping on top, looking-at-screen detection, etc).
I know Cyanogenmod devs have trouble with the intl GS3, but I don't know about other AOSP ROMs...
I'm running Slim(aosp) and minimal stutter if any, very fast, so I'm happy
Yeah but how is it compared to TW custom ROMs?
less stutter, minimal wait for contacts to open faster all round, I run both with dual boot, best of both worlds
I wonder why the devs make such a huge deal outta this then :s

Because there are also some minor radio bugs, that need to be fixed. Nothing terrible, but sometimes annoying. I.e. Me in the car, in the middle of a conversation, boom! Phone goes dead, no signal. It gets annoying but it is also rare..

Cyanogenmodded very skankily via XDA app. Skanky, indeed
