Is Xloud even a good idea on the X10? - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright, fairly new X10 user here, but I have an important question:
Should we be really installing the xloud enhancement on our phones?
The Bravia enhancement, for example, is a purely software solution - a localized contrast/color enhancement to make pictures and videos look better.
Xloud, on the other hand, increases power output to the external speakers, a hardware effect that can have very strong negative effects - ie. blown out external speakers in short order. It's also meant for a phone with different hardware specifications, the Arc.

We should w8 untill a dev take a look into it and solve Its issues then it will worth it.

As the OP correctly pointed out, it's not something a developer can "solve".
There is no issue with xLoud itself, it's just not for the X10.
I tried it, it works but the sound output is awful and I can almost feel my speakers scream "STOP THIS!!!!"
Maybe it could be altered but I doubt it's worth it and I wouldn't use it for prolonged period anyway.
It's another thing to mess with software and another thing to mess with hardware.

has everyone forgotten cant dsp manager? its a much safer and controlled way to increase volume...

Thanks for your valuable info.. I will try DSP manager

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Blow the speaker !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey man....the xloud is not that POWER........plus....the x10 speaker is so small and strong......

x Loud kills the x10's speaker.
It is without a doubt that x10 does in fact kilsl the speaker on your phone. The xLoud was not intended for the x10 and shouldn't be used in my opinion. I have confirmed with several people in regards to this matter and all of which agree that xloud will damage your x10's speaker.
In my opinion, you don't need this feature. And like most post here, "USE AT YOUR OWN RISK." I learned my lesson having my speaker blown.
To: Developer
Thank you very much for your contributions to the x10 community.

Where do you get DSP manager?

i think dsp manager is a better idea than xloud... quality vs quantity.

T.E.A.M ROM already has DSP manager pre-installed , WOLF V7 test update also has it to.
Btw, I love using xLoud because it enhances headset speakers during calls.I always have trouble with the in-call volume from the start.

No [10 chars]

Xloud is useless on the x10's internal speaker.
It's just not capable of playing low frequencies.

Rom with beats

I got my 14 year old an evo 3d for Christmas and some beats headphones. What stable, everyday, no lag rom would you recommend with beats audio? Also does it make a difference with the beats audio in the rom? Thanks in advance.

ok i'm just gonna say this for every one. Beats audio is a gimmick. I'm going to make a post later why this is so. but here is one that's nice
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318005
To answer your question does it make difference yes and no.
Yes it does give more bass response, but at a cost it takes out the highs.
Here's an easy fix to get good sounding audio.
Don't use MP3'S They take out some of the upper frequencies of the audio file and it removes alot of the stereo effect. They just don't sound good.
But if you want more bass just get an eq app and boost the bass.

Gimmick? Yes, but it does make a BIG difference for this phone. If you have a kernel with the Rezound drivers, expect a significant difference.
All I have done to the phone is root it. I believe I will need a rom to flash before the kernel? Any suggestions on a rom? Thanks for the info.

ROMs
There's a list of ROMs here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192661
From that list, I've tried Olympus Trinity 3D. It comes with Beats and a few 3D games.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327237
I personally found better results and more audio customizations with DSP Manager.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=795233
But I don't have Beats headphones, so I don't know how the sound quality will differ.
If DSP Manager is enough that you don't need Beats, then CleanROM is fast and stable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193369
I personally like Airborne ROM. It's a nightly, so changes are being made often. It's fast, highly customizable, and Sense-less, using Launcher Pro as Home.

Ray Headphone Port/Sound Drivers

I got my brand new ray yesterday and ive got Rayonium v7 final flashed... love the phone and rom.
Ive noticed though that the 3.5mm output to headphones/speakers is really quite weak - pretty much HALF that of my last phone (nokia 5800.. 3 years strong )
Ive tweaked both the dspmanager settings and the sound enhancements as much as i can and although i get a slightly better sound the actual volume is still quite weak...
Is this the headphone port, the actual headphones or the rom?
and is there a mod/app/fix/tweak to make it louder without distorting the sound?
Sony make excellent audio visual equipment - all my tvs and stereos are sony but so far it seems a bit crap if this is what the mobile phones provide
Any help would be greatly appreciated
iam using poweramp + music volume eq.
Looks not so bad and bass awesome too. For sure not cowon, but can listen.
Right well i just tried poweramp free trial and the sound is definitely louder BUT i dont want to change player... is there not a mod or something i can do to make the standard player on rayonium louder?
170 views and 1 reply? surely someone else has some input?
change rom or wait for the updated version, dsp not working on the current rayonium.
im using rayonium+n7player (fully unlocked) = music heaven!

[Q] [XPERIA U] Speaker volume is way too low ...

Dear Xperia U users ... did you find your speaker volume is very low ???? It barely noticable in crowd. The demo XPERIA U demo video said it has Crisp and Loud Sound. But mine is the other way around.
And XLoud feature just make the sound worse. It didn't loud at all (OK it made it louder, but the sound is terrible, like there's crackling sound). Even my previous Nexus S still louder than this.
I really sad

If you need a louder speaker for music, you could try Poweramp player. It has an equaliser preset for the phone speaker which makes it a lot louder!
Maybe it helps!

i gifted xperia u to my sister and its first impression disappointed me..
it f***ing has the same crackling problem, i trashed sony mobiles people hard for this on facebook and everywhere possible...
i talked to sony customer service on this, the rep himself said i am also using the same phone i can understand your situation lol !! can u believe it?!
i asked if i can get a call back from sony for telling that yes they'll improve the speaker volume or not? via futher software updates as that's what's left a chance genuinely, though he said he cannot commint but will mention the same ..
i got a call yesterday even from senior manager of sony, he said to get your phone once updated from a service centre they have a different firmware, i said i even updated it n even repaired it.. he said no they still have a different firmware by which the volume will get high but he didn't commited for the crackling problem then though he said it should also get fine.....
i havn't given my phone as i don't beleive it..... i want to keep it clean and just in 5 days i give it in a service centre no way... so i am counting on its future updates that it gets fine then....
i totally accept xloud makes its sound alot worse like a china phone playing music loud.... i would have understood if it was really loud but in the end its not even loud then why stuttering or crackling?! bullsh*t man !!
I compare it's sound with Xperia P by playing the stock mp3, the P clearly louder than U (and Sola too, it's just as low as U).
Maybe XU is just another failed / defective Sony crap just like X10 Mini Pro / Zylo ...
I managed to live with 4GB storage ... but this is just ... FUUUUUU Sony !!!!!!!!
Maybe the reason is because they still used SE logo instead of SONY on the back cover ...

My God you are so *****in right man, even in its earphone accessory in box, on its tag its written sony ericsson!! wtfffff?!?!
its accessories all has sony ericsson written on it and somewhere its logo like on the back of xperia u, xperia s, xperia p, etc . This means what i believe is sony is first helping sony ericsson to sell of its already created models just adding sony written with few features of sony in it mayb..... as its sony now . Then real sony models totally being sony will start selling off . I may not be totally correct but i am not wrong on many points aswell !
All this hate ??? I can live with that volume happily atleast it has a dualcore processor and a good collection of stock roms... well if you're really looking for a high volume phone then buy a china mobile... to be honest you can't hear anything when you'll be in crowd even if you have xperia x8 right? so be thankful what you have.

[Q] Sound quality on AOSP

I've read somewhere that AOSP offers worse sound quality than Sammy ROMs.
Something about AOSP not having access to Samsung drivers, which is the general argument people give for camera quality comparisons as well. The sound chip is from Wolfson, not Samsung though, so wouldn't that mean the sound would remain the same?
My question is not about the volume being low, or using equalizers, but on overall audio quality and fidelity when listening to music (eg.). Is there an audible difference between the ROMs or do they play back the same?

Why would you use those on a cellphone though?
Other than that, I have personally not seen any difference in sound quality. I have however noticed a slight buzzing sound when you have a high level of volume and a system sound is reproduced. Since system sounds usually have about a 3-second playback time and only half of that is the actual sound, I can hear some of the 'static'. Doesn't bother me too much.
Well, thanks for the reply anyhow

[Q] How to improve sound quality?

Hi guys, I would like to ask, if you are using any kernel/mod which is improving sound quality (headphones) of the S6 Edge.
I believe that it is just software issue, as there is Wolfson DAC and I always liked its sound (SGS1, SGS3). I have a good headphones (UE TrippleFi) and I'm using also great app (Neutron).
Yesterday I compared my S6 Edge to the S3 with the same setup (same headphones, same settings in Neutron, no effects active) and the S3 sounded better. Big time.
Sound on the S6 is to me narrower and kinda without life. Missing the low end and also upper lows, boring mids and too much highs.
I believe that this can be somehow sorted (maybe it already is and I just dont know about it), so I'm asking if any of you know some solution.
Thanks a lot!

Thank you for your reply. I know viper but as far as I know it is only a software tool, EQ if you like. I have pretty versatile EQ in Neutron, so this is not what I was looking for.
What I had in mind was something which can control DAC directly. Something like Boeffla Sound which controlled the DAC itself so I could bypass any Samsung crap or whatever is causing this sound issue.

I completely feel with you.
I also own the s1, s3 and the s6 edge because of the Wolfson DAC. The one included on the Snapdragon Galaxies like s5 is worse...
One the s1 I used voodoo sound on the s3 Boefla kernel with boefla sound....
AFAIK there is no custom kernel with direct DAC control features available, that sux.....
I myself modified the audio_effect.conf (removed the soundalive libraries) and the mixerpaths.xml (more output power) in order to get more power and to remove the soundalive and adapt sound crap from Samsung. Besides of that I have frozen both apps and use viper4android instead of them.
viper4android isn't just an equalizer it is a powerful sound pre-processing tool.
Although there is no custom kernel for direct DAC control and bypass features I guess to have managed it sounding as good as the s3 now.....
Anyway it would be great to get a kernel which can bypass that Samsung stuff already and has got direct DAC and stuff like Boefla sound and or voodoo sound...
BTW: Great to have somebody like you who also appreciates pure Wolfson sound..
The superior Wolfson DAC quality made me to refuse to get an Galaxy S with a Snapdragon.....

You lady (I guess by the username) are reading my mind. I was absolutely the same. After I was pleased by Wolfson on the SGS1 it was one of the main reasons I got S3 and S6 Edge.
About the Viper though, I don´t feel that way. I tested it on my S3 and I wasn´t able to hear any notable difference (Neutron itself is very good signal processor). I don´t use EQ for my headphones as they sound great as they are and I want to hear the track how it should be. I use EQ only on a speaker to fine tune it. Thus I didn´t really used any of its features. As you know we need the DAC Control
And about those changes you made, is it significantly better? Uuu and you might help me. So far, in all ROM threads I asked no one answered my question. I´m looking for ROM in which you can set up the Volume steps. Neither guys in CarHD or CrissCross threads answered this question. And this is crucial function to me as the regular 15 steps makes huge leaps. Thanks!

Hello again,
I am male even though my nick might sound female, lol.
Well, I thought somebody would create a kernel with those DAC control features for the S6 Edge sooner or later, but nothing so far….
I thought when I’ve got the S6 Edge on April what can I do myself?
I can remove Samsungs pre-processing and I can gain more power on volume…that’s all. I cannot modify the kernel myself that way…..
First I noticed that the s6 isn’t loud enough due to that odd EU volume restriction.
I knew setting some values at the mixer_paths.xml might raise volume level.
To introduce more steps I found not necessary, though. Besides of that I do not know how to achieve that TBH.
Reading on the viper4android thread concerning the s6 edge I noticed that the neon drivers of it do not run on enforcing kernel….
So I used a script run by chainfire’s super su on start which allows them libraries run when enforcing…additionally I had a look on the audio_effect.conf where Samsung’s own processing libs are called……
Yes it is significantly better than pure stock defaults…sound alive and adapt sound removed, volume increased, viper4android neon drivers running and much trial and error to get proper settings….
And yes I neither used viper4android on the Galaxy S nor on the s3. It wasn’t necessary at all.
But on the S6 with current possibilities I decided to go for it.
It is the best I could get myself….. I am using Samsung’s stock player with custom viper4android profile…..as said I guess I have managed it to have it as good as the s3 has been….
I am still running android 5.0.2 since I am pingpong rooted and to not want to trip KNOX (not for warranty reasons but for personal idealistic reasons, lol)
I modified anything myself by exchanging the files.
Maybe one should email the dev of Boeffla asking if he ever will develop for the s6 edge….in the meantime I am afraid that this is the only solution, to remove the Samsung’s own processing libs/apps which concern headphone output and to use viper4android and a volume mod instead of…
Here is my post where I published the way I have running it till today: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61526054&postcount=253
If you compare the files with the originals you should find out how to modify the current ones as well…
I don’t know what current custom roms can do.
But I’d suggest to try one which comes with viper4android and a volume mod included. Maybe you come close to the s3 as well...

Haha sorry for calling you a lady then I was surprised that a girl would have such interest in this geeky stuff, but one never know!
I will defo read trough your list of changes and try em out probably. Altough I never had a problem with volume as my headphones are in ear and they are pretty loud. I´m never listening louder than about 50%.
One last thing if I could ask you. Would you be so nice and try out the Neutron music player? It is super powerful player with plenty of customization. I find its sound much better than PowerAmp or other players. If you have a good headphones you should notice the difference immediately. If so, Neutron has free trial app and I can post you list of possible best settings. To my knowledge, Neutron do bypass all software processing and listen directly do DAC. I just want to hear from you if you find using Neutron made your listening experience better or not. Feel free to just send me to the hell
Sit rep: I sent a text to Mr. Boeffla and unfortunately I have to tell you bad news.
In his statement he said, that he is not developing for Samsung anymore as well he is not buying any of their products, so there is no chance he is going to develop anything for our S6/Edge :/ Well, at least we know!
Thank you for the update. It’s a shame that Andy won’t develop a kernel for the s6 edge, anyway I can comprehend his reasons to be disappointed/frustrated about Samsung.
I’ll give Neutron a try, thanks for the hint!
I need to find time for excessive testing, though. But I’ll definitively do it. If it’s better I’ll buy it.
The modifications at sound_effects.conf are necessary to get rid of Samsung’s pre-processing from their stock player. 3rd party player can run DAC directly…..
I tried many different players and came to the conclusion Samsung’s own is one of the best choice.
Poweramp is one of the worst IMHO.
A friend is using playerpro and is very satisfied.
I have got 2 completely different headphones. One is for classical music and the other for rock/electro.
Concerning output volume it depends on impedance of the headphone. I do not like in ears, though. Over the ear or on ear with higher impedance required a volume boost by modifying that xml.

Oh in that point I totaly see why you needed to boost volume. I prefer in ear as they isolate noise and therefore I can keep volume down.
Definately give a try to Neutron, I already bought their app as it is the one I use most and Im super satisfied. Years ago I was at poweramp but then I tried Neutron and never ever went back. The clarity of the highs and detail of lows in completely somewhere else. If you'd like I can send here some useful tips how to set up the Neutron. But if you are not audio noob, what I guess youre not you will find your head around. They have also very good faq at their website to answer most questions. Many users are complaining about the UI, but I think that once you learn how to use it you wont go back. My top tip about UI, would be to dissable swipe to skip track in UI settings so you can use swipe to change the screens. Please let me know how you like Neutron
And for future, I guess we just have to pray for some dev to unlock DAC and amp capabilities for us. Maybe some port of the boeffla sound concerning its Wolfson?!

Hi again,
I successfully updated to 6.0.1. I 've rooted it and tripped KNOX and installed Viper4Android. (Wrote a how to here @xda).
And I had time to install the evaluation version of Neutron.....4 days left.
As a 'first' impression I can say (after 3 hours of testing) that it is a decent player. It sounds better than Samsung stock player and has more features.....the UI isn't that bad.
ANYWAY: Without viper you don't get by far the best listening experience....
Pure Neutron output has still a narrow 'confined' sound. It is better than Samsung pure stock sound though....
In combination with Viper it seems Neutron is better than stock, but need to test that next 4 days....
Maybe you can post some Neutron settings you are using?
P.S.: You need to test viper4Android, it is amazing...it definitely improves your sound experience, Neutron alone cannot perfom that..
I'll come back for a final opinion...

Hi again,
I successfully updated to 6.0.1.

Oh so nice of you man.
Glad to hear that you like Neutron, it is really a feature packed player (10 band parametric eq with a choice of a filter, just wau).
Thanks to you I will test the viper on the s6. Only reason why I didnt do that was my previous negative experience on the s3.
Settings Im using and which are relevant to sound are:
Resampling - Audiophile
Replay gain off
Gain protection off
64 bit processing on (it influence only the eq)
audio hardware - lattecies to minimum, dither on, hardware gain on, audio focus on, generic driver on, 32 bit output on, frequency 48k.
Hope it helps

Thanks. I have basically the same settings. Although I noticed when using preamp and gain protection one does not need to modify the mixer_paths to gain more volume. (headphones with a higher impedance)
Neutron player is by far loud enough out of the box.....
Considering the player alone, I have to say Neutron is the best one I have tried so far. The EQ is fantastic and highly customisable.
But together with viper the difference to stock player is not big anymore...better said it is very hard since you need to adjust viper to Neutron as well.....
At some tracks I'd say the overall result is better on Neutron plus viper....but would it justify to spend more than 6 bucks?
It depends on kind of music and quality, even though I do not have them worse than 320 MP3s...
Still testing...I needed a break since testing too much makes one feel like I know nothing anymore...which settings are better.
When testing viper goto UI setting and switch to 'expert'.
Do not use the EQ at first...
Try playbackagc, viperddc, differential surround, reverberation, dynamic system, viper bass and viper clarity...
Try to find a combination of some of them enabled and adjusted...leave the other viper settings alone at first...
I'll test more..cu again
OK, my Neutron player has been expired.
For users without root it is probably the best player....
For users with root viper4android is a must have. IMHO.
It is amazing and almost unbelievable what the programmer of viper4android has achieved....I seems nobody of the pros (Samsung/Sony/HTC) can reach that with their DSP soft...
Also the current players available cannot...
The S3 with boeffla sound engine is a combination that sounds very good without viper, but it seems that is an exception.
If you want I can try to make a viper4android 'default' which sounds 'relatively' good (but better than without) on a greater variety of headphones and can upload it....so you could start from there...
Just drop an reply...either way enjoy your rig
BTW: I have asked 2 kernel devs if they can port boeffla sound engine to the s6 kernel...no answer yet....

Sorry for my response time, I've been busy.
Moving to a new place and work mostly.
But I also bought a new cable for my headphones so I'm still testing/enjoying
Hope you're good
