Skype Update - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Themes and Apps

There is a Skype update which allows video calling for us

only the 7" tab is compatible right ?

Installed but I don't see the option for Video Calling?

Still no support for Tegra 2 (needs NEON instructions)
according to the FAQ (https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA11019/How-do-I-make-video-calls-with-Skype-for-Android") you still need the NEON instructions set, and Tegra 2 is not supported for video.
"* This specifically does not include some tablets that use the Tegra 2 chipset (e.g. Android tablets and Motorola Atrix do not support video calling)."
This is a bit of a bummer, i'm really hoping they get this sorted out soon. It works on my SGS, but i'd really prefer the tablet.

Friing (sp?) works great for video calls for me. I video chat to an iPhone 4 user no problem.

Yes but Fring is not Skype.
Most of the business world uses Skype.
Anyone got this working?

I read somewhere that they weren't going to do any deving for tablets until Ice Cream Sandwich comes out... It's up to us to make this happen it seems

Netflix App
Its not about performance because the hummingbird processor is superior to the snapdragon, i guess its the next gen qualcomm snapdragon processors. That is the one bad thing about andriod, several processors and andriod versions so longer to make apps compared to ios.
Why are they only developing one for snapdragon processors.... thats BS.... Netflix is a big company and they can afford to make their app available for most if not all devices. I mean it will only work to increase their customer base.
Never really got whey Netflix has been so slow (and continues to be so slow) in developing an android app. Same goes for Hulu.
From what I understand is that netflix will be releasing an app on certain android phones, not all, mainly because they don't want people to hack and find a way to bypass the monthly membership and stream videos for free since android is open source. Not sure how correct that is but that's what I read on an article on android central a while back.
From a purely technical point of view any phone with an ARM Cortex A8 processor should be capable of running Netflix just fine provided it has an adequate data connection (this includes Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors for the Nexus One, EVO, DInc, etc... ; TI's OMAP processors for the Droid X and Droid 2; and Samsung's Hummingbird processors for the Galaxy S and related phones). The problem that is holding them back is incorporating DRM into the devices to suit Netflix's business model. So far, only Qualcomm has struck a deal with Netflix, so right now only phones that use Qualcomm's next generation chipset will be able to use Netflix. This has nothing to do with the performance capabilities of the hardware itself and is nothing more than a business strategy.
This won't be of interest to most of you, but for anyone running PlayOn, they just released an Android app. You can find it here.
The downside for most, is there is a trial for Playon, but after that you have to pay for the PC application. It runs on your home PC and let's you stream Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, etc to Xbox, PS3 (now Android) and others. It's a niche software, but in my case, I use it. You can port forward your router and connect from the outside, but I haven't tried that yet and don't know if I will.
The app itself is in its first release, so it has some downsides that I have seen. It's slow as molasses. It can't find some links sometimes, but when it works and connects, it seems to work well. I consider it to be a beta build. Long story short, if you don't have PlayOn, look if you want, but don't get your hopes up. If you do use PlayOn, try the app, hopefully it will get better.
Note: Allshare will connect and browse PlayOn, but the streams come back in an "unsupported format".
I have used playon outside the home it works fairly well except if you want to FF or rewind.
The Nexus S is the only phone there that does not have the snapdragon, has the humming bird right? So... I am not seeing any hardware difference that would make an effect, if it could play on the Nexus S, should work on Galaxy S devices.

I can practically guarantee you that the reason why this works on the Nexus S but not the Galaxy S has nothing to do with hardware compatibility and everything to do with licensing. Whatever is holding back the Netflix app from working on our phones, it's a legal issue and not a technical issue.
It's definitely not a Snapdragon vs. Hummingbird issue because it works on the Nexus S.

[Q] Video playback - is Samsung lying or not?

Hi,
just have watched this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlLP3RXkmUQ&feature=player_embedded#at=330
watch and read info that is displayed between 5:05 and 5:30.
And how does it compare to capabilities of good old GT 7"? ;-)
new update with touchwiz should update drivers for smooth playback....i'm curious to know this too
So, whoever gets TouchWiz first please report ;-).
If at least there would be an Netflix app for SGT 10.1 that would help a lot... but with both playback possibilities not really working it is far from being a proper multimedia device ;-) (but looks great).
Funny thing is that Archos (coming soon...) might be a black horse here with Omap 4 on board and competitive price.
This looks very interesting although tablets themselves are truly ugly

Cellphones, Tablet PCs,
Qualcomm gets official with TouchPad-powering Snapdragon APQ8060 processor
By Donald Melanson posted Feb 10th 2011 1:31PM
HP already put out the first official word about Qualcomm's new Snapdragon APQ8060 processor yesterday when it revealed that its TouchPad was based on it, but Qualcomm's now also come out and properly announced the new processor itself. That's, of course, a dual-core processor, and comes paired with an Adreno 220 GPU that Qualcomm says helps to deliver "unprecedented processing and 3D graphics performance." What's more, while the TouchPad is the first device to use the processor, it obviously won't be the last, and Qualcomm has now also given us an idea of what sort of capabilities those devices (including smartphones in addition to tablets) might have -- namely, cameras up to 16 megapixels, and the ability to capture and display 1080p stereoscopic 3D video or 8 megapixel stereoscopic still images. Head on past the break for the complete press release.

Why do people go nuts over thing like this? i really dont get it.. unless its just so they dont have to re-encode anything... but what the point of running a 1080p video on a screen that is only 1024x768? when you do this you are making the processor work harder scaling it down.. there for using more battery..
if its just for easy of use.. thats one thing.. just copy and go.. or if the touchpad had a video out port (that would be SWEEETT!!)

Calm down. Why do people think it's their job to tell others what to want? First of all, nobody's going nuts here. Secondly, you're right. I don't want to reencode my tv shows just to watch then delete. Third and last, i don't care about battery when im on my bed and want to something.

sorry i didnt mean to imply that anyone here was going nuts over it.. but there was quite a... debate.. over the issue on the nook forums about it.. people calling it a POS because it couldnt do 1080p ect.. people were even complaining that even tho they were already having to re-encode there videos to get them to play on the nook.. they were having to re-encode them to 800x480 instead of the more 'common' format of 1280x720
I understand. There was a big ordeal with the Tegra 2 and high-profile h264, but it is an issue that needs to be addressed. Anyhow, it LOOKS like this 3rd-gen Snapdragon chip is a better decoder. Will try it myself when I get my Touchpad. Wonder if there's a HW-decoding player for webOS though.

Does not look like this software is hardware decoding because even 720p h264 mkv are lagging.
No it isn't. It transcodes the files. Somebody needs to write a player that will do hardware decoding. This soc is technically as good as the ipad2. I would be more than happy to pay for such app.

From using touch player on the device (which is built off of ffmpeg), I can tell you that even 720p will lag a little (but still playable). I highly doubt 1080 will be. Besides, how much do you think you are going to fit onto it with nothing but 1080p shows? 2 seasons of the simpsons @ 720p took up nearly 16gb.

I'd consider it, but I don't think there's much of a market for selling it on the touchpad. Besides the fact android will be on it soon.

[Q] GT10.1 vs Toshiba Excite

Hi,
Just watched presentation of upcoming Toshiba Tab and Iahve to say I fell in love again (as with GT 10.1 which dissapointed me with itd SoC).
AT200 will be equipped with Ti OMAP4 4430 (1,2 Ghz) chip - the one with Netflix HD certificate. Has microSD slot, micro USB and HDMI. It is just 7,7 mm thick and very light.
What do you think....if you thinking of getting GT10.1 in few days would that make you wait?
And one more thing... Video transcoding - is it coming to an end???
I just bought my tab 4 days ago, don't want to even think about this tablet, I would've gotten it but too late now :/
Specs is one thing. What's important is real life performance and if there's any other possible flaw. Gtab actually looks not bad, but the software performance bogged it down. I'd by the time the Toshiba tablet is released, icecream sandwich may be released or close to be released. So unless the performance of the Toshiba tab is another class higher than grab, I see no point thinking too much about it.

Looks almost identical to the Gtab! same resolution display too.... Won't be long before Apple will be taking Toshiba to the courts over this!! (or maybe Samsung will!??)

I looked at the Engadget review and the tablet looked pretty slow to me, I might be wrong. I'm very happy with my P7510 running on a vanilla 3.1 Honeycomb (soon to run on PhantomHacker's 3.2 vanilla ROM) and I'm looking forward to see Ice Cream on it.
The thing is, we will never purchase a tablet if we wait for the next "big one" to come out. Technology changes so fast that is not worth to trouble yourself. Just enjoy the tablet and use it to death, I personally think that my Tab 10.1 is an excellent product.
Well, I am not waiting for the next big one but just for one that does not have Tegra2 inside, looks OK, has I/O's I want and 3G connectivity.
So, just to have something for now I bought iPad 1 3G few weeks ago. As it is very limited device I was waiting for it to get right price. $350 for new one on warranty is OK. Now I can wait till end of the year to get Excite or Holiday or TF2 or Xoom2.... Will see.
If you want to wait, an alternative would be the HP Touchpad for $99 (fire sale instead of $499). It runs on WebOS which is awesome and I'm pretty sure someone will make an Android ROM for it eventually. Don't expect a great quality build, though.
The Tosh looks very nice, another weapon in the Android armoury. I'm still very happy with my Samsung 16Gb Wifi.

It would be all true if folks like me could actually get it.
IMHO if you want (especially 3G) tablet now, good one, for reasonable price, just to keep you going till the one you really want is out iPad1 seems like a great deal.
Does most of the stuff Tegra 2 tablets do, has 3G and new one can still be found pretty cheap (half of the zoom price for example). And form me video capabilities all almost the same.
There will be always something new and better than what's available currently in the market. By the time Toshiba excite gets released to the market, even more better tablet with awesome specs will be shown at a new tech show taking place anywhere on this planet Earth.

I'm feeling exactly the same as you. The size and weight of the GT 10.1 was perfect but the poor video decoding performance of the Tegra 2 and lack of MicroSD card slot was a real let down. The AT200 seems like it will be perfect for me (assuming the OMAP proc is a lot better for video decoding). I just hope it comes out real soon to the UK market. If they delay it too long then I may be put off with official specs of ICS tablets.
It is the same SOC as in new Archos G9 series (like them but they look "cheap") and they say it will "Play" anything and everything. ;-)
Dont even think about getting the tab 10.
The Ti OMAP4 4430 in the toshiba is far superior to Tegra 2.
Ti OMAP4 4430 has A9 cores with Neon processing. Tergra 2 does not have the Neon processing and will be much slower when running apps which use Neon code and alot of apps are starting to use it.
Ti OMAP4 4430 has DUAL channel memory controller. Tegra 2 only has a single channel. Since video memory is shared, dual channel will give double the memory bandwidth which is highly needed since video memory is shared from system memory.
Ti OMAP4 4430 has SUPERIOR video decoding hardware compared to tegra 2. You can finally play real HD 1080p video. Tegra 2 decoder is so slow it cant decode main and high HD profiles which is what everyone uses.

Full specs have been released.
Does it have an amazing screen like the Samsung SPLS? Screen quality along with weight is what made my decision. However im disappointed in the current state of honeycomb/tablet apps. I would expect apps like Google+ to have the hangout video support. Lack of skype video is also a huge downer. My older samsung galaxy 7 also had way better video playing support.

No, but don't worry, I do not think Europe has one either .
And two facts:
1. OMAP is a definitely better SOC than Tegra 2 - no arguing here. The only thing at which Tegra 2 might be better (we will have to wait and see, but I doubt it myself) is energy management.
I am worried about battery life of a tablet with 1,2 - 1,5 Ghz clock.
2. It will be cheaper in US than in EU - fact.
Now, one more "issue" we might encounter by the time it is in the shops. What will be a better choice - tablet with Omap4 or Tegra3/Kal-El with 4 cores and new architecture? (unless nvidia made an intel trick or the one they do with graphic cards - Tegra 3 is two Tegra 2 cpu's on a single chip - this would suck I think)

Which Galaxy Player is best?

My sister really wants a pocketable music player/camera/ of some kind. Mom won't get her a phone and is therefore considering an iPod touch, even though my sister shares my hatred of apple products. All said, an android PMP would be perfect for her.
No, an old phone without cellular access would not be ok, my mom... its easier not to try to explain, she just isn't ok with that. =P
So, I went to look up the Samsung Galaxy Players (as the only android PMPs i know are Samsung and Archos, and the Archos ones look disappointing) and i found there were no complete/reliable spec sheets anywhere on the internet >_< information was either vague (EG unspecified 1 GHz processor) or conflicting.
I'm looking between the Galaxy players 4.0, 4,2, and 5.0.
Which is better? screen size and internal storage do not matter as much as screen resolution, RAM, CPU, and SD card. I'm looking to get the best one i can buy at this point, not the best bang-for-your-buck one.
also, i found this device on GSMArena:
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_player_70_plus-4633.php
Anyone know anything about it?
As i said, there's not much on the internet about the galaxy players. Any help from you guys would be appreciated
NOTE: yes, i consider a 5" screen pocketable. So does my sister. A 7" tablet (EG nexus 7), however, is not, so that's not an option.
They all suffer from lack of RAM at this point. Maybe you should wait for a new model to be released...if they ever release one. Personally I like the 5.0 because of its screen size, and that's about it. As a PMP they all work fine. In terms of processing power the 4 and 5 are the same, not sure about the 4.2. both the 4 and 5 are SD Card expandable, again not sure about the 4.2. Lastly, that device you linked to looks very promising. Kinda like a Galaxy Player 5.0 2! I hadn't even heard of it until you. To sum it all up, They all work well as PMP's, and they all perform pretty similarly. That 70+ looks way better than any of the previous models, so if you could get your hands on that, go for it.
-arceusg
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720457 All specs are here. However I say the 4.0 is the best because it's more the all rounder PMP player, but the 5.0 has more custom roms. All the spec sheets for all galaxy player are found on Samsung's site. You click tech specs, and then hit the PDF file above.
Do you only want "Android only" players, because there are some other good ones too. The Sony Walkman Z is also android only and is dual core. You can try looking at the Cowon J3, or D3. But I would wait because Samsung is probably going to release a new Galaxy Player. That Device you linked is the Galaxy Player 70 Plus. It is Samsungs first dual core player, but it was only released in Korea. It is based of the Galaxy S2, similar to how the Galaxy player 4.0 is similar to the GS1.
It would be best to wait for the upcoming YP-GP1 with ICS,dual core and qHD.
The new model that's supposed to be released is similar to a Galaxy S3, however, it will be a whopping 5.8 inches, like, mini tablet sized.
I'd say go with the 4.2, it looks better, and quality is better as well, and as long as she's not going to be a heavy gamer of some sorts, she'll be fine with it.
Otherwise, if you plan to put a custom rom, I would say 5.0, although I dont have one myself (I have a 4.0) , since it has more ROMS to choose some, even though 4.0 looks promising.
There's also the Walkman Z, which is Sony's android PMP, and it looks alright, 1 GB of RAM, great if she's going to be a heavy user, although I don't own one of these either, so I have no real experience with it.
Anyways, maybe you should show her some of the choices, and let her pick from them herself.

5.8 sounds sweet, actually
she mainly wants it for music, web browsing, and games (mainly angry birds, minecraft PE, and fruit ninja), and i plan to throw GrooveIP on there eventually
ROMs aren't that important, but i do plan to help her root eventually.
Didn't know any of the walkmans were android powered, i'll have to check that out
and i do plan to let her make the final decision, if they're close. however, i want to give her the best options, not every option. I'm sure you understand.

Only IFA will tell us more about this. I don't think that if they announce it, it would be released in the US.

It is also worth pointing out that the 4.0 (and 4.2 I think) has better sound quality because it has the wolfson DAC (5.0 has yamaha which is not bad but not as good either). You can enable voodoo sound on 4.0
4.0 also has better screen dpi because the resolution is more fitting on the screen size. 5.0 is better for movies IMO but be prepared to see some pixels :cyclops:

Right now the Walkman Z is looking like the best overall device, even with its lack of removable storage. Only things that irks me about it is the charging cable and the lack of cameras. I like the Walkman because the SoC (Tegra 2 + 1GB RAM) is the same as my tablet, so I now its going to be powerful enough. What CPU/RAM do the 4.0, 4.2, and 5.0 have?

Ultimately, there's no best or worst, it's about what's best for you. For this reason i have both the SGS 3.6 and 5.0. I like the 3.6 for its small size and extreme pocketability. I also use it as a bluetooth handsfree with my 7" 3G tablet. I love my 5.0 for the size of it's screen. It's still pocketable and i take it with me to outings and on weekends. It's very good for comfortably surfing the net on that large 5" screen or watching an odd movie.

even this is relative, it depends on what you need it for. If you want to play some very heavy 3d games, you need more power, but you will sacrifise the battery life.
If you read backa few comments I explain what it'd be used for...

Mine 5.0 works on 1.2 ghz it had power vr chip 540 ..all games that i have like gta 3 ,max payne ,fifa 12 ,real racing 2 etc works smoothly if that was your anwser.Power Vr 540 chip on 800x480 resolution gives higher FPS then tegra 3 on tablet resolution so 3d want be a problem ..for future games only problem could be single core processor.

I think it's the 4.0 or the 5.0 because they already have ROMs
Well, I own a Samsung Galaxy Player 4 and 4.2. For My the best between both devices is 4.2. The quality of sound and fluency is better. The only problem is sometimes when I use skype the 4.2 restart the system. :banghead:

I love my 4.0. It's smaller and fits well in a pocket. But girls have purses so I guess she wouldn't mind something bigger. I'd suggest you to wait for the new 5.8, it will be blazing fast with its dual core.
