Sometimes when I flash something using CW, the back menu button is disabled shortly after. Why does that happen?

when i flashed simply honey for the first time i went to advanced to wipe dalvik and back disappeared so i couldnt go back to reboot
it was because i didnt have the GB bootloaders
maybe thats why ??
well, it's happened to me a few times before. Sometimes if you wait it seems like the back button re-enables itself. Other times it doesn't. Today I was flashing project V and then I flashed a theme over it and the back button disabled so it left me a bit perplexed...

it's a certain back and forth combo that disables it. it's not voodoo specific. if you do the same combo again, it'll re-enable. (i can't remember what the combo is though).
When it goes blank, pressing home button brings it back to main menu of recovery.

Hey guys I need your help asap!!!
I already rooted my HTC Thunderbolt but I'm still fairly new to all of this. I was going through my phone and I seen that I had a firmware update available so I decided to start it up. I thought it would be a quick and easy update so started the update and left the room. I came back 2 hours later and my thunderbolt had a black screen with a exclamation mark inside of a triangle to the left of a little android guy. I couldn't leave that screen unless I pressed the power button and volume keys at the same time. Once rebooted everything looks normal, and everything begins to load up but only 10 secs later my phone begins to power down again and I have no control of it. Once powered down, a loading droid comes up as if something is starting to download, but once the loading bar reaches the middle of the status bar, the image I mentioned earlier comes up again.
If it helps the last two things I have changed on my thunderbolt was I flashed Lean Kernel extreme and installed Launcher Pro....Any help is appreciated, I just hope I didn't do what I think I did (bricked it)

It doesn't give me time to get to my Rom manager
You are rooted so u shouldnt have done that update...
hold the power button and the volume down button at the same time...see if you can boot into recovery....
damn...so what do you suggest???
read my post # 5
yeah when I do that I just reboot back to the phone again then 10secs after Im rebooted, it says "powering down" and gives me the same exclamation mark inside the triangle and the little android guy next to it

when you hold down the power button and volume down and it reboots....doesn't it go to a white screen? I beleive it says recovery in blue......if you use the volume down to highlight it...then press the power button.....it should reboot into recovery.......
alright I just turned it off and I pressed the power button and the volume down....the white screen came up and its now asking me if I want to start update. If I press the "no" option I should be good right? I just want to make sure before I do anything else

what you have to do....is let the phone reboot normally.....then when the phone bbot up...connect to your computer.....delete the radio file on your SD card...it will say something like PG51....zip...then hold the power button and volume down.....then it will not ask you for an update when it reboots...then you can go and highlight recovery...
Do you think it will be just as effective if I took my sd card out and just deleted that file you mentioned?? because seeing that my phone turns off after only a few secs of it being rebooted I dont have enough time to syc it to my computer

that will work!!! take out the card...delete the radio file....should be PG51xx.zip...put it back...hold power button and volume down button...phone reboots into white screen...use volume button to highlight recovery...then push power button....phone will reboot into recovery.....
also..save the file that you are deleting off the sd card...you will need to reinstall after you restore the rom you want...
okay so I guess I ended up doing it the hard way but its cool I guess...
basically I held the volume down button and then pressed and held the power button until hboot comes on like you said but it didn't allow me to select anything other than "yes" or "no" to continue the update or not. It will check the file, then ask if I wanted to update. I pressed volume up for yes. After update, I pressed power to reboot.
After pressing the down key to stop the update, and I seen that it didn't work after 5 or 6 tries (because it just rebooted and did nothing), I just pressed the volume up.
Once it rebooted after I pressed the volume up key it restored my phone like the first day I got it. its a little annoying because now I have to download everything again but at least its not bricked
Thanks a lot man, I completely appreciate your time and effort...
glad you

glad you got it...but all you had to do is delete the PG51..zip file off your SD card and you would have been able to reboot into recovery...if you have the P51...zip file on your phone.....it will ALWAYS ask you to update....
For the record, when that black screen with the exclamation mark comes up, you are in recovery. All you had to do was press menu. I just made this same mistake like a noob, now I gotta wait until my lunch break to fix it.
This is a pretty common mistake
Hello, i`ve upgraded my s2 to ics and i have a inconvenient. On gingerbard, holding the power off button would showed up some shorcuts including the 3g activation. On ics if I hold the power off button it shutdowns directly. Is there any possibility to make it do the same action as on gingerbard? Is there any alternative for activating the 3g without going deep into the settings? Thanks

That's strange. I don't think that holding power shuts it down directly without power menu (unless you hold it for 8-10 seconds, then yes it's normal, but I don't think that's what you mean). Maybe something went wrong during the update. Try reflash maybe, or reset to default...

ive tried like 4-5 diff ics versions today.Everything is working perfectly but the phone shutdowns directly when I keep it pressed instead of showting shorcuts like gingerbard does.Maybe i`m missing some option, some check box unchecked but I didin`t find any option.

Official Samsung firmwares? I find it really strange. It should have a power menu. (you are holding it just 2-3 seconds right? Not 8 so you are forcing it to shut down).
I'm sorry, some other expert will help you. But stock firmwares and custom ROMs, they all have power menu. I've never seen any firmware/ROM that shuts down directly.
Sounds like you're missing /efs/imei/keystr
Create a file called keystr in /efs/imei and put "ON" in it.
wow, you are a genius.Everything was fine and working except that holding thing and I also had no screenlock, it was just getting to the menu if i would have pressed home button or power off.I fallowed your instructions and they were both fixed.Thank you very much.
I've searched this problem quite a bit, finding results involving not only the lock button, but also the home button, which doesn't apply to me.
For some reason, whenever i try to run the "overview of app storage use" option on Titanium Backup, the app auto-quits after hanging for a few seconds, my SetCPU profiles are thrown off (they temporarily deactivate), my lock button stops working (unless i Odin back to stock and recover), and other problems. Any ideas on what to do to fix it? I know the button itself is fine, because it works fine if i Odin back to stock.

cannot help you upupup
My phone is acting really strange. It turns itself off and then on again and again in this cycle as if the power button is always being pressed.
I can sometimes get into my recovery (CWM) but when I try to go deeper into the menu. I get kicked back to the main screen as if im pressing the power button to go "back" until the phone gets completely turned off again.
I noticed something too. When I pull out the battery and put it back on. The phone turns itself on without me even pressing the power button. Then the cycle continues again.
Very frustrating.
Could this be software, ROM, recovery, partition related or does this sound something hardware related?

Is it possible to backup, unroot and return to stock if i cant turn on my phone?
Quick update in case someone bumps into the same problem.
I just got back from the repair shop. The power switch was indeed broken. The technician replaced it with a new one and the phone works fine one.
I updated to Lollipop a several days ago through Kies. My battery life was not good so I did a factory reset. I reinstalled my apps and set up the phone the way I wanted it and it worked properly for a couple of days, still not happy with battery life. Yesterday I found that when I set the phone on the wireless charger the wireless charging notification came on lighting up the screen and the screen would not shut off. I googled it and all I find is to go to developer options and uncheck the stay awake which I have done, it was not checked so I checked and unchecked it same thing happens. I restarted the phone several times. I made sure Daydream is off. I uninstalled the last apps I installed. I tried to plug the wire into the phone to charge it same thing happens. I found that if I unlock the phone then set it on the charger it will time off ok, but if a notification comes in the screen lights up and does not shut down. I found that if I push the power button the screen goes off and stays off until a notification comes in and the screen lights up and stays on. My next step is to factory reset again but I wanted to see if anyone has another suggestion before I reset. Any help will be appreciated.
You may try wiping the cache. I'm assuming you didn't have this problem before the factory reset and not immediately after the factory reset. Now this is just a suggestion but I'd try this before I did a factory reset. I'm guessing you are not rooted and you are running stock so your recovery will be stock. To enter recovery power off your phone then while off hold the volume up, power, and home button at the same time. Hold and you'll see "Recovery Booting" in the upper left. You can let go of the buttons now. You should have stock recovery now booted up. Using the volume keys scroll down and pick "wipe cache partition" Use the power button to select. Once it's done and it won't take long. It will be on "Reboot" go ahead and select that. With any luck that may solve your problem.

You are correct that I did not have the problem before or after the factory reset and I am on stock and not rooted. I am trying your suggestions now and will report back thank you.
Thank you for the suggestions however it did not solve the problem, but after I wiped the cache I found that the T-Mobile My Account was staying in the notifications and showing that I was close to my 3GB high speed data. I turned off the notifications and now I have a normal working phone again that shuts off the screen when charging.

Glad to hear it. Yeah, I would have suggested shutting off those notifications just so they don't bother you. Anytime I want to know what T-Mobile has to say I just open up the app and look. I'm on wifi 90% of my time so I don't see using my quota anytime soon.
My sister updated her phone and somehow keep screen on while charging got enabled as well.
I had to enable developer settings (double tap build number 5 times) and uncheck keep screen on while charging.

Same thing happened to my wife's phone.
Little surprised to see this enabled on a pure stock device.
