Found that article. Is it true?
Anyone out there confirm they are blocked?
Still works for me on CM7.
i just used barnacle on miui and it worked flawlessly
Interesting. I wonder if it only blocks those using roms that are still based on Samsung's code.
Above examples use pure GB code and nothing from Samsung/Verizon.

I tethered from my device (ED05 installed) a few hours ago and it worked fine. However I was using a custom ED05 kernel, they might only be blocking it on Samsung's stock kernels.
There has always been tethering monitoring in the stock kernel. They might just now be doing something about it officially, but how many people are still running the factory software on here?
I think they attempt to block the tethering apps from the market and put things in the kernel

I wish it said what program she was using, along with how much data she was using.
Maybe it's just Verizon scare tactics. How is changing the ROM on the phone any different than erasing Windows 7 and installing Ubuntu on my computer. I think people will read that and think twice about "jailbreaking" their phones. I'd be surprised to see if anything changes on our phones though.
blocked
nope. no scare tactics here. im blocked. was using WIFI Tether... after 4 hours of reading up on this forum to tether my droid x2 to my Asus Prime, I finally got it working... Only to get pushed to that damn Verizon HotSpot Data Page minutes later. PISSED!
Verizon contract ends in a month. looks like im heading to sprint.
Well yeah your going to get the pushed "Verizon pay a monthly few page" if you try to use tethering through the built in hotspot. Download wifi tether or barnacle wifi tether and it should work on rooted devices. For USB tethering download easy tether and that does not require root. Yes I do believe this is a scare tactic unless for some reason you are using a total ungodly amount of data, then they will throttle your speed or possibly cut it off for the rest of that months Billing cycle. I have never ever had a problem and I don't feel threatened

I am wondering the same thing too.
I mean the app uses data like any other app, I'm fairly certain you'll be able to steal the service. We will know all too soon though. Ha

i guess we're about to find out. lol.
i they found a way to distinguish the difference between the computer using the Internet vs the phone, we're pretty much ****ed. if it's only an app update to block the apps, then you should be find if you are rooted. like i said, we're going to find out in couple of days.
On the d2 and dx they updated the kernel to block tethering. You can bet any future update for any device on verizon will do the same thing.

Unless they push an update, or roll out some network side packet inspection, there's nothing they can do to stop barnacle from working. The end of the promotion is really just a problem for people using the built in Mobile Hotspot program. You'll get a popup the next time you launch it asking if you want to enroll in the tethering plan for $20/month.
Otherwise, continue tethering away via barnacle. Legally verizon cant auto-enroll you into anything, so even if they could detect it, they'd have to get your consent to change the terms of your contract, or just cancel your contract for you.
Wireless Tether still works. I didn't personally like how Barnacle functioned.

if it's in the kernel that blocks the tethering won't a custom kernel fix that issue?
i am surprised that they somehow figured a way to distinguish between phone data and computer data via tethering...
i don't believe it.
When I was on TMO, I remember people asking the same questions about tethering.
From what I could gather, TMO was able to distinguish data by the agent being used for web browsing. Not exactly sure what or how they did it, but I remember some people saying they got a text from TMO about their data usage.
It's been a while, so I could be wrong, so don't quote me on this.
the browser user-agent won't work because you can still set the user-agent on an android phone to look like chrome or firefox, or another desktop browser...
I'm not sure what verizion did to the DX or D2 but they have the mobile hotspot app built into the settings or notification bar or something so you couldn't even remove it or freeze it.
The TBH patch, which patched the radio, helped to get around this problem. it made it so that even when you're tethering verizon sees [email protected] instead of [email protected] (which is what is used when you switch on the tethering app originally)

That's true I didn't think about that. The d2 and dx bootloaders are locked down by efuse so loading a custom kernel in those phones is out of the question.
So yes a custom kernel would fix that

So no on else read the android police article about how even with wireless tether there is no way for Verizon to tell if you're tethering without major packet snooping.. the kind which would be invasion of privacy. It was talked about several months back when the G2 came out and people were using the 4G.
Nothing was ever confirmed, it was just what people were saying. It could have been that their usage just showed unusually high?

im having a issue with NAT on all kernels, I just came from the D1 to the TB. I use my tethering mainly for xbox, and for some reason the Nat config is diffrent on TBs kernels , On the D1 with just about any custom kernel i ended up with moderate, im getting the same thing with even the OTA kernel on my TB only diffrence is for some reason i cant talk or join with anyone on xbox live. i can play online solo with people in game just not in a party or anything. Before it only affected me with other people with a fully closed nat, now on TB its everyone reguardless of NAT. I was wondering if maybe because the OTA kernel came Pre enabled if theres something being missed, or jus not looked at because it worked out of box? Any ideas would be welcome.
I have no idea where you could find those type of settings, if they are even available... Sorry man. I haven't tried on my Thunderbolt, but never had an issue on my dInc...

Its not about tethering a box or whatever u want for that matter. Its about getting as close to a true isp as possible. Voip uses it for multi voip connections more so if the host is not wide open nat. So theres a nat issue....

Verizon has NAT at the tower level, not at the phone, which is why you cant go and run a server on your LTE connection. 100s of people probably share the same IP that you have on your phone. There's no way in the age of 1 or less blocks of ipv4 left that you have 1:1 ipv4 address mapping on a phone (unless the phone specifically says it does like blackberries do).
Indeed but the d1 has a less restrictive nat then the thunderbolt. Meaning its something in the phone itself. Kernel i would guess...... Love all the comments but would be great to get some real info on the issue

Did you try in both 3g (rev A), 3g (ehrpd) and LTE? I'd say no way it will work in the last two for sure.
Could just be your droid x had its own IP always or it was just implemented recently that no one does, because I don't see how you can get around the fact you're behind NAT at the network level without doing something like VPN. The only way I have seen to do so is use 1x mode (roaming), but that's obviously not too great.
See its never been open nat. Im coming from a Moto Droid 1. There are 3 accounts in my house all using the old droid, im using the thunderbolt. The Droid 1's are not having any of the issues my ThunderBolt is having all using the same tower in the same house from the same network. I dont have LTE in my area yet so were still on the old verizon hardware. For the life of me i cant see how its not a issue in the phone itself. The droid 1's back in the day were having the same issue, untill Devs came out with the tether enabled kernels. Then the D1 was fine. So im thinking because the kernel for the thunderbolt came tether rdy out of the box that its never really been looked at (as a issue i mean)
maybe so. i dont have any previous android experience to make that judgement so i wouldnt know where to look what it would be exactly in the kernel source that would cause it without craploads of time wasted. Maybe try asking Adrynalyne or Imoseyon since both have prior android phone experience with kernels. adrynalyne goes on the irc channel so you could wait for him to talk on there.
the other thing you might try is seeing if it's an issue with cyanogenmod. I dont think it would be since the kernel for that is basically the same regardless of phone (other than drivers and such).
Good idea. Ill track down a dev. Not really an issue other then voice chat from a comp or box. Works just fine on Older models. Even got a old htc inc i tried and its still working fine too. Just odd

So this thread applies to you, if:
1) you belong to AT&T
2) you tether, either with the mobile hotspot app, barnacle, pdanet, etcetc
3) you change the TTL value/hack/hide/tunnel, to hide your tethering usage
Is your method working?
After some time I will release my current method of tethering which allows seems to hide my tethering as my bill has no increased, and after my first letter I have yet to receive any more. However I just want to see if it's just me or if someone has found this method too. NOTE: i'ts not my method but it's one of the less common ways of hiding tethering, also it can be googled.

same here. Although OP is 20 days old and somewhat trollish, I'm going to create my own thread that will hopefully get better responses.
I have been using Wifi Tether for over a year w/o a warning. Before the Atrix I used it on the Captivate.
I love the CM 10.1 build of 4.2.2. It is my dream phone right now. The problem is that no WIFI tethering works on it as of yet. If anyone has anything working I'd love to be proven wrong. This is a show-stopper for me. I can't use bluetooth because my laptop doesn't have bluetooth.
I tried every tethering app out there. Barnacle was the best in that it reported the errors it was seeing instead of just refusing to work.
Anyway, I am thinking of working around the problem by keeping a ROM stored as a TWRP backup that I can restore when I need tethering. I don't need tethering on a moment's notice.
I would like the tethering ROM as slim as possible. I haven't tried any yet. Would a restore be any faster with a slim ROM?
Can someone suggest what ROM I should use that has a small footprint and can restore quickly? I'm thinking that I won't have any apps and no account logged in. If I'm tethering I will be using the other device for email etc. And I'm sure the phone will work no matter what I'm running.
Can anyone suggest a better workaround than this?
I pretty much tether all day with my jellybam install. It has been a rock solid performer on my note and has kept me from having the itch to try any of the 4.2.1 ROMs.
There is supposed to be a new version released tomorrow, but quite frankly , I don't know whether I'll bother as the current version is exceptionally stable ( with flaps kernel )...
I'm sure with cm 10.1 going nightly, they'll have tethering fixed shortly. Its a pretty important feature for many of us.

Sounds like a bad download...Did you download straight to your phone? While I've never had this issue, I have heard that some prefer to download to their computers and transfer the zip to their phones..
You might be right. I did download it to my PC and copy over the zip. However, I had trouble copying and I had to copy a second time. So, I'll try again.
I did a fresh download, copied, wiped, flashed, and it didn't work. Apparently bam won't run on my phone.
...and your using the latest version of twrp?
Yes. I checked. I might be doing something wrong but I doubt it. I'm guessing there is a bug somewhere that rarely shows up. Until the source code is available these custom roms are somewhat a shot in the dark.
I'm just going to go back to my ICS backup when i need tethering. I guess I started this thread with the hope that someone would have a workaround. I really like 4.2.2 and I've decided to live with this. Maybe it will be fixed soon?
Thanks for your help.
The only tethering app that seems to work is "Open Garden." It's in the Play Store but you'll have to side-load it if on AT&T.

For a while they were changing people's plans to a tethering plan if AT&T caught them tethering. I got a warning email myself.

I know that Verizon has folded tethering into the normal data plans. They make it sound like a benefit but they're raising the overall price so they are really forcing you to buy tethering. I thought ATT and the others were going the same way.
I assume they realized they couldn't enforce it any other way.

I had just now typed a reply to you that said you were crazy and then it hit me. You meant to go there on the phone! I'd only been there from my laptop.
Thanks, I'll give it a try now.
-- later --
As I feared, open garden is bluetooth only.
I was researching the hotspot issue that only a few users have been having and found that it is inherent to android 4.1.2 and newer. What I found out:
"Throughout the previous iterations of Android (<4.1.2), Android has not identified for the carriers which data is for tethering, and which is not.
Android 4.1.2 introduced that ability (and requirement) for Android devices to properly flag when data is for tethering purposes. This is the first time this has been used in a vanilla release of Android...
For everyone frustrated by this update to Android: Android respecting a carrier's request to know if data is for a tethered device IS NOT A BUG. IT IS A FEATURE. It's not a feature for users like you and me, it's a feature for manufacturers like Samsung and HTC, so they can in turn build devices that carriers can have more control over.
So, to be clear, THIS IS NOT A BUG. Google INTENDED to respect carrier tethering rules. The only way to circumvent this is to either get a plan from your carrier that allows tethering, revert to a build of Android of 4.1.1 or earlier (I used wugfresh NRT tools, google it, they're amazing and simple: FOR NEXUS DEVICES ONLY, SORRY), or for a developer to find and KILL THE ****ING ABILITY FOR ANDROID TO TAG DATA AS TETHERING DATA and release that to the public; either by providing an modded Android image, or as an app (much less likely to work unless you're rooted)."
Copied from a past on another forum, and apparently I can't post a link to it.
Even though I clicked on Thanks, I'd like to thank you again for that clear explanation. I'm sure it won't take long for that to be hacked.
i think the next nightly may fix it

I sent JamieD a message about it a few days ago. I'm not sure if all developers were aware with source of the problem. Its especially hard when only some users report having an issue. Hopefully they get it working soon.
Alright. After 2 very long days of researching this issue and trying various fixes, I am at a loss. Really hoping someone here has a working solution.
So I've been using WiFi Tether (3.3beta2 most recent working version) as long as I can remember now. I've got an E970 on AT&T with unlimited data. Just to clear the air, I use about 25 to 30 GB per month (tethered and un-, combined), and I've never gotten a warning text/call/threat from my carrier.
I have also been using Nocturnal Limited Edition 1.0 since about the 2nd or 3rd day after purchasing my phone. Therein lies the beginning of my woes; not the rom itself, but the fact that I was bored a few days ago and realized there have been many updates since December 2012. So naturally I decided to update, and it's truly a thing of beauty. Just the one problem; at some point the base was updated to 4.1.2 and now WiFi Tether no longer works.
I considered posting this cry for help in the rom thread, but after much research on this issue, it's my understanding that WiFi Tether has broken for many people on many devices and various roms after updating to 4.1.2 and higher.
So far I have tried all available versions of the app, including the latest experimental build, as well as TrevE's mod. Each with a plethora of settings and each time without success. I've also attempted the entitlement check modification without success, after verifying the change remained post-reboot.
I don't think I've left any critical information out. That just about sums up my current situation. As a last resort I'm willing to downgrade back to what I had before (4.0.x), if that's even possible. When I'm home, my tether extends to a nano router with WISP which then feeds into another.. well.. it feeds the whole house with delicious 4G LTE. Any and all assistance with this issue will be greatly appreciated.

Why don't you just use the built in WiFi tethering? Not sure about nocturnal but most of the AOSP ROMs don't have validation checks to turn on WiFi tethering.
Edit: Guessing nocturnal is stock based ROM so you can turn off the verification with SQL editor. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44339653

Maybe you just need to do a fresh install of your ROM. Backup your current ROM and data. Wipe data, cache and dalvik cache. Then install which ever ROM you like. If you want to stick to stock ROM I recommend MEs odex ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43984577. But I have to say I am loving CM10.2. Anyway good luck to you.

Just an update. I reinstalled the ROM as suggested without success. I ended up installing version 1.3 of Nocturnal LE which downgraded the base to 4.0.4. Downloaded WiFi Tether for root users from the play store. Fired right up with high speed tethering.
So it looks like I'm stuck with ICS for now. Until hopefully someone finds a fix. There's a lot of really cool ROMs out there I'd like to play with, but right now I'm relying on this 4G flowing through my network. Thanks for the replies. If ever I come across a fix, I'll post it here.
