[Q] Social Hub (Twitter) - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do you always have to manually refresh to receive your tweets? I can not figure out how to make the social hub automatically update. I thought these were live panel that constantly refreshed.

set it in Account & Sync

I have is 3 hours the best option or am I missing something altogether.

yea saw it too
weird but its better than nothing
1 hour would be better for tweet junkies tho

How often do the Google services sync?

I've go a Hero and it's setup to sync my Calendar, Contacts and Mail. Unlike the iPhone, I haven't been able to find a setting for how often this sync happens?
Anyone know if there's a way to setup Push vs 15mins vs blah blah, or just how often it does it?
Thanks,
Stephen
nope, no settings.
it just does it when it needs to.
it's pseudo push....it seems to ping every so often in the background and only do a full sync when some changes have been made at one end or the other.
seems pretty quick on mine, i generally get emails within the minute. Plenty fast enough for anyone (lets face it, no-one needs their emails within 5 seconds, they just like to get arsey about it!)
Sure, I was just wondering whether (like on an iPhone) you could lengthen your battery life by setting the interval up a bit.
nope. you can turn it off, but that's it.
there are various apps in the market that can turn it on and off at various times, and may be able to simulate something like that by turning it on and off regularly....

pls tell the names of those apps
try searching the market for 'sync' maybe?
Alternatively, check the older threads here for something like 'turn sync off at night'.
I cant remeber the name of the thread exactly, but there is one discussing this, and an app was found.
App "Locale" with Sync plugin (separate install) are great for turning sync on and off according to conditions like time, location, battery-level, etc.

Awesome. I knew someone here would know.
You can also set up the regular "mail" client (vs gmail) to pull in your data. This has a setting for how often it syncs.
yeah but that's only for mail, not for contacts and calendar as well.
But very good point for those who are only interested in email....

[Q] How much battery does Motoblur Social Networking app drain?

I noticed some horrible battery life (about less than 9 hours) on my phone, and suspected that Motoblur had something to do with it. 4G, bt, wifi, and gps were not on the entire day.
I did a quick search and saw people complaining that the Social Networking app can be a battery drainer. Have you guys noticed anything?
I set it to one hour sync for now (instead of the default - push), and we'll see how it goes tomorrow. But if that's the case, do you know if I can remove those accounts completely, but still have Facebook and Twitter account information linked to the contacts with their own apps?
9 hours is honestly ok
You can remove any accounts you want and the phone will function fine. My phone lasts like 12 hours with medium use and 6 and a half with heavy usage.

Not really, i constantly check my battery usage and Social Networking has always stayed low on the list. I also have mine set to 1 hour update increments. I was interested in removing all motoblur parts but was disappointed to find that androids Facebook app does 'not' sync pictures to contacts and such and doesnt contain an option. If there is a way to do this, i'd like to know as well. What you can do if your rooted is allow moto's social networking to tag all of your contacts with pictures, then backup your contacts with Titanium. At that point you can remove you accounts, restore through Titanium and have your pictures on your contacts with your facebook account unlinked. Granted, this obviously wont work for new friends you would acquire.
I would just put up with it till someone releases a rom with stock android if you really dislike motoblur. Hopefully that will happen soon, as that seems to be what most people are wanting.

Two gmail applications?

It seems like my sgsII has two programs accessing my gmail. The first is a gmail app, the second is Social Hub. I end up getting notifications from both of them in the status bar. How can I shut one of them off?
Whenever I try, I end up getting messages about needing to reset the phone to remove my gmail account. I don't want to do that, but I can't get one of these email programs to shut up.
If you're rooted, you can use TitaniumBackup to freeze Social Hub. That's what I did, and there's no ill effects.
Very nice. That did the trick. Thanks!

Email sync schedule bug

I have 2 email accounts set under the social hub, one for hotmail and the other for gmail, and for both email accounts i've set them under premium accounts which means instant push email during the peak periods. For both accounts, i've set the peak days to everyday of the week and peak timing to start pushing emails from 7.00 am and stop at 12.00 am. The rest of the non peak hours (12.01 am to 6.59 am) i've set the emails to come in manually.
So, correct me if i'm wrong, the emails are supposed to be pushed to your phone during the peak periods (which means your phone vibrate/sounds/notifications in status bar etc when emails come in) and during the non peak hours emails are not supposed to be pushed to your phone (which means no vibration/sounds/notifications in status bar etc) even when a sender sends an email during the non peak hours? If my interpretation is correct, then say for example you've got 5 emails sent to you during the non peak hours, you should only be notified of the 5 emails at 7.00 am, am i right?
The problem i'm having is for the non peak hours. The emails still continue to come in without me opening/refreshing the email app/account. I'm not certain if the phone sounds/vibrates when emails come in during the non peak hours but when i turn on my phone during the middle of the night i have email notifications even without opening the app. Can someone please enlighten me about this issue? Much appreciated!

i dont have a solution , but i have both peak & non-peak schedule set as manual for all mail accounts i have in social hub.
Still i get the mails as if in Push service. I guess the settings made on our phones arent being reflected on the samsung server.
Everything's being pushed (but not promptly i looks).. has a delay.

I can understand the delay part but it shouldn't be so bad until the email gets delayed for a few hours? The way i see it seems like what you've said, the settings aren't reflected on samsung's server. Thanks for the insight anyway.
Can I ask why you don't just use the Gmail app for the gmail account, it's not too relevent but I wonder why people do that? The push service is far more efficient and the app allows better exploration of the mailboxes..
anyway to the point, try setting the peak time to 11.59pm, maybe it's in some strange loop
This is more likely the reason though - whenever the app is open the phone will try to make a connection and refresh the inbox.. I used to use push on the native email (not through social hub, through a exchange activesync account from the app itself) but this used to create a wakelock and waste the battery, I'm guessing this push wakelock is occuring on your phone too and keeping push active even in the off-peak periods, try changing the peak sync schedule to 5minutes (for both accounts), restart the phone and see if the issue occurs

I didn't set the gmail account to come in through the gmail app because i didn't want to enable auto sync. Anyway back to the point, I've tried setting the peak period sync schedule in sets of 7.00 am to 11.00 pm, 7.00 am to 7.05 am and even set the peak period to manual and emails still come in during the non peak period.
When you have push, it's push and push only. As soon as the mail is on the server, it will be pushed to your device.
The peak/non peak times apply when you have set the email checking to be scheduled check of say 5 minutes, 10 min, etc.
Thanks,
Vishal

Correct me if im wrong but isn't a premium email account instant push email while non premium email account is push email at user defined intervals (5min, 10min etc)? Because in non premium email account there is no peak/non peak settings, but instead just user defined time intervals. Whereas on premium email account, there isn't any user defined intervals (5min, 10min etc) but just peak and non peak periods. No offense but i'm just wondering if you're using a galaxy s2 because email configuration is a little different from stock android 2.3 as far as i know because of the social hub.
Anyway, my brother is using the same phone as me and i've asked him countless times and he had confirmed with me that if an email is being sent during the non peak periods, it will not be pushed to your phone until the start of the next peak period cycle or when you open/refresh the email app. In short, emails get pushed to his phone during the peak periods and emails will never come in during the non peak periods.
Well, no offense taken. Btw, I don't use the stock client as I have faced many issues with the same. I use TouchDown.
Thanks,
Vishal
I now have the same issue. Before Xmas everything was working fine, emails would only get puched during the specified time but now they are pushed 24/7. I have no idea why and have not managed to fix the issue. I was away all Xmas so my phone was turned off for 2 weeks.....I'm kinda guessing this may have something to do with it.......

May i know which country you're from and have you updated your firmware recently? My country (Singapore) had recently received an update from 2.3.3 to 2.3.6 on Christmas '11 and it seems like i've been having this email sync schedule bug after the update (at least that's what i notice). My brother is still on 2.3.3 and his emails pushes only during the user defined time intervals like how it should work.

I'm in the UK and I updated before xmas to 2.3.5 and I believe it was working fine until I came back of holiday but it certainly could be related. I also get duplicate notifications.

I know this is an old thread but nevertheless I think this is relevant.
I'm experiencing the same problem with an ICS build, namely XWLP9.
After a few experimenting, here are my findings:
I have a Google acount (with its email app) plus a corporate Exchange account, which is the one giving problems.
I set it to update each 1h during peak period, and manually during off-peak.
When initially set up, it works properly. However, after some kind of trigger situation, it will go into push mode and display notifications on the fly. This of course implies a permanent connection to the server and can be noticed in the wakelocks and battery consumption.
No matter what settings I change, namely putting all options in "Manual", it won't respect that and keep using push mode. The only way I found to revert to the periodic update was to remove the account altogether and re-add it from scratch. Eventually the situation will repeat after some time, sometimes one or 2 days, sometimes a couple of weeks.
I have a wild guess this might have something to do with performing a search within the Email app, since a couple of times I started noticing the bad behavior after that, but I'll need to do some more experiments till I can tell for sure if that's the culprit.
For now, I leave the workaround I'm using and hope it works for you experiencing the same issue.

Turning off Facebook Check-In notifcation

I noticed that ever since I got the Note, I get a notification when friends check in to a local place. I understand if they tagged me but they didn't.
I use my FB account for business as well so I can't turn off the notification in general. I just want to turn off Check-In that people do.
So how do I do this? I already check the settings on the app and inside facebook.
