[Q] Help With Odin - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
First of all, i looked over http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 and looked at the firmwares, and decided to flash one of them which is the "JPKG5"
I just have some simple questions
1) Does Odin3 need my phone rooted?
2) If i finish with the flash does it wipe my data or does it leave it untouched?
3) Is flashing the firmware and kernel the only things that are needed to be done to be able to work?
Thnx

1) Nope
2) Depends on the ROM you flash, some do, some don't
3) Yep

Thanks A Lot for the fast reply
but in the firmware page i posted earlier i read this
It will not wipe your phone if you flash as recommended

so i guess i dont have to worry about #2
Again Thanks

Help flashing flappjaxx uclf6

im trying to flash flapjaxxs rom to my note but wen i extract it it doesnt show a tar or pda to use in odin.
Any ideas what i'm doing wrong?
You must never of flashed a rom before you flash the .zip in CWM or twerp recovery on your phone. You need to read the noob how to guides. Maybe someone else can point you to a good one.
Lol wut?
Did you bother to read the OP of the ROM?
Nowhere does it say to extract and flash anything in Odin. You use CWM. Please read more before you brick your device.

This means that you, as a Deaf or hearing individual has the advantage of the best possible videophone call experience on a mobile phone so far. Keep in mind that, most tablets in the market today. Connection is so fluid on 4G. Not to mention the stylus where you can draw on the fly. Imagine yourself in a typical pen-n-paper situation....pretty handy, eh.
For complete specs, go here: Galaxy Note Full Specifications
------> RECOMNENDED ROM: Flappjaxx's UCLF Base Rom w FJ-Mod. See below:
Source: XDA
Requirements:
-ADB
-may need the USB Drivers (KIes) available here. (Support & Downloads for SGH-I717),
This puts the phone in download mode: hold volume down and power on, next screen asks: vol up, to continue, do so.
-Stock file- pda.tar in the PDA box of Odin3 1.85
- Superuser installed after 1st flash.
Source: Root/Unroot at XDA
****Note that this will increase your flash counter, used by Samsung as a reason to decline warranty service. If you want to flash without tripping the flash counter only, go here-No counter flashing at XDA
****GINGERBREAD ROOTING METHOD ONLY- out of the box.
THIS WILL NOT WORK WITH NEW OFFICIAL ICS.

Might i suggest, you can read the general info, in my signature links.
In you're on the pc, links are in my sig links, go to the gen info...read

Rooting, is the risk high?

If I follow all instructions correctly will my phone not get bricked? Is it just luck to do with whether your phone gets bricked or is it because you download the wrong file? Is it worth rooting also? What are the advantages? I don't have an SD card so if I root would I lose all of my apps/pictures?
It's very safe no you won't lose anything, just install a rooted kernel and your fine.

I think you need to edit your post.
Dont you mean "is it worth rooting etc".
You need to spend some time reading rules and guides as its all very lame questions your asking and that doesnt go down well here.

Sorry, i just needed to know the basics. I probably shouldn't of rushed and should of searched instead.
No problem,Im just advising you.I spent a week reading stuff before flashing anything and I still ran into problems.
If you have the GT-I9100 model I just posted how to root the phone using the stock recovery which saves using Odin in the meantime.
You could try that now if your on ICS firmware.

Yes I'm on 4.0.4. I'll have a look now thank you
Be very careful since your on 4.0.4 stock.
Thats why you flash the siyah kernel straight after you flash the su/busybox file.
siyah-s2.v4.1.5.zip is the one for you.
Would it be easier waiting for JB to come officialy? I only want to root to get a custom rom on jelly bean, well I haven't really looked at other things you can do
You can install the leaked lsj one then root that.It could be a couple of months before official one comes out.
Or try custom ones like rootbox etc.
Theres also the option of trying one, then making a nand, and so on and so on.Then you can just restore the nand of whichever one you like.

As a new user that is the single best advice you can take. 99% of issues new users have are caused simply by them rushing into things, not searching, not reading, not learning and then doing something wrong.
I can make a tutorial how to do it, its different then just install SuperSU and a kernel, but it works very good, rooted 4 S2s on this way.
If you read the instructions you will root it succesfully.

1. Install Kies (no need to run)
2. Reboot device into download mode and connect to USB.
3. Load up ODIN.
4. Load Siyah kernel into PDA.
5. Flash.
Its that simple.
Installing a custom kernel will root, install cwm, su etc. No need to mess about with any of the guides that have you installing separate things.

That is a bug in stock 4.0.4 kernel. When you flash a custom one like Siyah you're completely safe from the emmc bug so have no need to worry about it whatsoever unless you flash stock firmware in odin again.

Well, I don't know exactly what you did to mess with the imei/efs. Without a backup, it's going to be difficult to recover from that problem. Frankly, I don't know enough about it to be of any help. I think I've read that you can get the phone working with a generic IMEI but you can't get the original IMEI back. But again, it's just speculation on my part. Maybe someone else who knows more will jump in.
when I had this issue I flashed with odin back to JB 4.1.2 stock and that seemed to fix it, don't know if it will be work for you but its worth looking into

i tried to downgrade to ics 4.0.3 but always fails with odin, i was looking into the version of the firmware by typing *#1234# and in it says:
PDA : 1777UCMD8
PHONE: Unknown
CSC: I777ATTMD8
is there any way to get the phone file, i see in odin that it has a phone option, so, i'd like to try and flash that file and see, any idea where to get it for JB 4.1.2?

yes but regardless of you currently being on 4.1.2 you can still reflash the stock jb 4.1.2 firmware via odin, you can try redownloading the image file since you might have a case of a corrupted image.
I agree that you should attempt to flash stock ucmd8 again after re-downloading the file. You should flash the .tar.md5 version. Odin will check the md5 sum of the file before flashing and only flash it if it is not corrupt. You can find a download for it in the Download Repository. It's the very last item at the bottom.

At this point, downgrading to 4.0.3 is probably not a solution. From all the information that you have posted so far, it appears that your phone either has a firmware issue such as corrupt memory, or a hardware issue such as damaged eMMC memory. It is also possible that a necessary step is being skipped, such as performing a wipe data/factory reset from within recovery. Although both myself and 4-2ndtwin have mentioned that you should do that, you have never specifically stated in any of your three threads that you followed our advice.
So first things first, have you performed a wipe data/factory reset from within recovery? Have you included this step with every attempt to flash a firmware through Odin3?

i now flashed to 4.0.4 and got stuck on rethink possible screen too, im almost giving up ._. nothing seems to work x_x.
Don't give up just yet. Try going all the way back to i777uckh7 firmware. If it doesn't boot. Power off, reboot recovery, wipe data/factory reset, then reboot. If successful, save ur EFS folder 1st, back it up with an app or Root Explorer, etc. Save it in a few places, external sdcard, pc. Then u could proceed to update to JB or wherever u r wanting to go.

I agree with 4-2ndtwin. Don't give up, and follow his suggestion.
In fact proceed according to the following sequence. If Step 1 solves the issue, stop there, otherwise proceed to step 2, and then if necessary step 3.
Step 1) 4-2ndtwin's suggestion. Download "I777UCKH7-CL503881 FULL tar.md5" from the section titled I777UCKH7-CL503881 Stock Binaries. Flash with Odin3 v1.85 (preferred version). Perform wipe data/factory reset from within recovery.
Step 2) Download the Tar version of Siyah 2.6.14 Kernel. Flash it in PDA. Without ticking Re-Partitioning. Next repeat Step 1 above.
Step 3) Download the SBL Bootloader from the Download Repository. Flash it as PDA in ODIN, without ticking Re-Partitioning. (Please observe normal bootloader flashing caution.) Next repeat Step 2 above.
To recap the above for clarity:
Step 1 - I777UCKH7 full distribution --> wipe data/factory reset
Step 2 - SiyahKernel v2.6.14 --> I777UCKH7 full distribution --> wipe data/factory reset
Step 3 - Secondary Bootloader --> SiyahKernel v2.6.14 --> I777UCKH7 full distribution --> wipe data/factory reset

After I tried everything I decide to format the phone with "wipe date/factory reset" but there was a problem!
And this is what I got>>
http : // im67 . gulfup . com / GSmiOr . jpg
I tried to do something using Kies porgram. But it said it is not supported.
Any thought?
Firstly, check the FAQ thread. You'll find information on flashig a custom recovery, after which you can flash a custom ROM. Kies won't help you as it'll only update your phone, which it can't, since there aren't any updates, and apparently it won't even recognize your phone.
Try flashing a custom recovery/root with Odin, then flash a custom ROM via recovery mode. All of this can be found in the FAQ which I have linked to. You may not want a rooted phone, but it's a lot easier to work with.
And if you really mind having a rooted phone, for warranty issues or otherwise, you could also unroot, flash a stock ROM, and reset your flash counter, so it'll all be as it was when you bought your phone. Again, all this is in the FAQ thread.

[Q]Back to stock thorugh CWM?..

Please dont take this a stupid question imjust such a noob...
Well i installed cm11 on my s3 and it is now successfully running on 4.4.4 BUT for some strange reason i have the urge to go back to stock (Yes I know theres a whole thread about it and all but it seems a bit too long for me to do and also dont know how to relock bootloader?..)
Well anyways i came across this stock 4.3 Firmware file that can apparently be flashed through CWM so all i need to know is if i can flash it without a brick (considering right now im on 4.4.4/Potentially Unlocked bootloader) i dont want to go back to complete stock just the OS needs to be.
It also apparently comes with a modem?...
(My baseband is the same as the thread says)

Please post a link to the rom you would like to flash so i can help verify for you
The international vesion of the s3 does not come with a locked bootloader, you either have a different s3 model or read some wrong info.
As MrKhola said please lay out all spec/info with what you plan to do.
If you do indeed have the i9300 this is the thread you need.

Don't be afraid, what would you like help with or explained?
If flashing a 4.3 'stock' ROM (through CWM as this file is made for it) will brick my phone if I'm running CM11 4.4.4.
It also comes with a modem kernel etc.
Its best to do it on odin, follow from step number 3-wipe device in the link i provided you. Read and understand a couple of times to make sure you understand them and you will be alright, going to stock is easy and alot less hassles than going to the other way.
Although the CWM way seems easier to me I'll try your way soon.
Is it wipe data/factory reset in cwm?

Yes, Remember to back up first
Edit: Did some research for another user and it seems you can flash stock files through recovery so I believe you can try it this way first.
After much deliberation decided to go with my first method and its worked!
For anyone wondering:
1) Download the file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/dump-stock-i9300xxugmk6-t2563562
2) Install latest Philz recovery as for some reason normal CWM doesn't install properly
3) Wipe Data , Wipe Cache , then format /system
4) Install ZIP and your done!
