[Q] Touchwiz Vs. Stock - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Samsung galaxy tab 10.1 and I can't decide between updating or not because it locks thebootloader which really sucks cause I have alot of third party apps on my tab but apparently it it also adds alot of functionality that it didn't have before so what do you guys think. Also updating could delay future updates. And I don't want to root my tab. Just to clarify locked bootloader just means no no market apps right?

Having locked bootloaders wouldn't effect you using 3rd party apps. You can still flash roms and kernels too. But you can update without locking your bootloaders by heading to the development section and grqbbing it from there.

You got almost everything wrong.
A locked bootloader brings no disadvantages to the standard user. It has nothing to do with 3rd party apps. If you don't even want to root a locked bootloader has no meaning to you. And even if you decide to root later the locked bootloader is no real drawback.
Secondly all updates come from Samsung so updating delays no future updates. When you decide to remain on stock android you won't get any other updates than the people on the TouchWiz rom.

so I can still install apps from unknown sources? In that cAse what does locked bootloader mean?

Sure. Otherwise the Amazon store wouldn't work.

AFAIK locked boot-loader wont allow you to load ROMs which require modification of boot-loader. That means you cant load ROMs like ubuntu in your Gtab.
Some one please confirm this

[Q] OTA 2.3.3 Update Question(s)

So I was just going to wait for the official OTA when I get the notification.
When I update to 2.3.3 will there be ROMs that I will be able to flash without having to update to 2.3.4.
To clarify,
When I updated to Android 2.3.3 I will be able to install any ROM that is made?
*I know this is a stupid question, I just have been confused on how the ROM process works on the Atrix. Im used to the Galaxy S method. Is it the same?
Thanks!

Yes, you can still install other ROMS. However, ROMs may have varying requirements. Usually, it will require an unlocked bootloader and CWM (Clockwork Mod) recovery which will allow you to install a new ROM.
That's the beauty of Android. As long as your device is supported, you can always look forward to the community creating great ROMs!

Would it be correct to say that not all ROM's will be compatible?
I would surmise that a ROM for 2.3.4 isn't necessarily 100% useable on a phone with 2.3.3 on it given that there could be subtle differences in builds/versions which could cause issues as with P-ROM's for 4.1.26 thru' 4.1.83. If I remember correctly the later GingerBlur P-ROM's could not be used with anything other than 4.1.83, but my memory could be blurred, (no pun intended)!
Not necessarily. The current operating system (2.3.3 in this case) has nothing to do with your eligibility to upgrade to a newer operating system. The main factors are whether your hardware is supported by the new build of Android. Another factor is performance. If you have a device that is antiquated, it's quite possible that the performance could be substantially degraded.
If you are at all unsure, I would recommend waiting for official updates from your service provider or manufacturer. You really shouldn't dig too deep into the ROM scene with your primary/only device your first time around. If you make a wrong turn, you could potentially permanently disable your device, and you usually will end up voiding your warranty.
Just got my atrix, installed greyblur. Does that mean my bootloader is unlocked?
Please correct me if im wrong, but im reading here if you install greyblur you unlock your bootloader and will not be able to update to 2.3 gingerbread or any future updates?
I read somewhere moto is releasing an update to unlock the bootloader anyways?

No, your bootloader is still locked. And when new updates are released, you will be able to upgrade.

It's still gonna be a more of a "wait and see" on how the carriers are going to handle this...
Thanks for shinning some light on this for me. Ive rooted 3 devices, but the atrix was the more intense method.
So at this point its better to have a locked bootrom?
Is there a stock motoblur rom out there? I forgot to make a backup...

Installing ICS directly from Google

After reading all the postings about official ICS update from Sony, I just wonder whether it would be possible to just install ICS as a customized rom, the official Google version respectively. I mean, I could deal with losing all the Sony features. Did the same with my Arc S and it works properly.
I think we might need to be able to root the device first in order to do that

Yep, we'd definitely need at least root and probably a working Custom Recovery too. A modded kernel would make things easier too, all of which are quite a feat to accomplish. At the moment, until we get root, we'll just have to make do with whatever official updates we get.
If it was possible, screen should be calibrated too. Hardware buttons etc. Would NOT be possible, so sorry

Hardware buttons are not necessary in ICS, since just like HC there is a bar at the bottom of the screen that houses the multitasking, home, back and contextual menu buttons.
Would it be possible now? After the rooting? =)
Root is just the first step. Recoveries and ROMs are still in the distant future I would imagine, but root is great!

as unclespoon mentioned, the short answer is no.
Root allows developers and users more access to their system, but the Tablet would need a custom bootloader and recovery before we could get anywhere on this kind of thing, both of which are a very serious undertaking.

Q: Regular S4 to Google S4?

I was wondering if it will ever be possible to convert a standard S4 to a Google Edition S4. Basically taking the software, firmware, drivers from the Google S4 and flashing them to the TouchWiz S4. My understanding is that these devices are identical in hardware which could possibly enable an unlockable bootloader on the TouchWiz S4 by flashing the Google Edition S4 bootloader.
I am aware that is is not as simple as flashing the bootloader, as the bootloader is locked, my question is whether it is possible or not and if there would be any advantages from doing so.
An unlockable bootloader was something I had grown to appreciate with my Galaxy Nexus and would love to see the same for the S4.

Thanks. I've taken a look at that before and actually flashed it. What I meant was at more of a 'deeper' level per se.
I get the impression that no benefits would come from porting over the bootloader and other aspects from that device since I would get essentially the same device by running that ROM.
Do you have any experience running that build? Also does anyone have a package that would allow the use of the TouchWiz camera app on AOSP ROMs?

What benefits? It's an unlocked bootloader, you really need that? We'll get one eventually and loki takes care of that now.
I ran it. If you want an AOSP-like rom that's fully stable, use it.
And the rom isn't pure AOSP. It's still TouchWiz based, just not themed. So you can download the missing apk package that CleanRom has available for download and move the camera into system/app/.
The only things you'll be missing are the smart scroll etc, that you cannot port over.

Are there any ROMs suitable for un-rooting?

OK - this is probably a strange question, but I am coming face to face with MaaS360 soon with the company I work for. Basically any rooted phones are going to be cut off from corporate email. I understand that there may be ways around this, but I just don't have the energy to try and work around this.
So my question is - are there any ROMs that might be well suited to be un-rooted and still function correctly? I understand that there are going to be some apps that will no longer work, but I am trying to find one that doesn't have deeply embedded features that would depend on root. I also don't want to go completely stock - since I know that this may lock the bootloader.
I have been running Sophisticated, but I did like some of the 4.4-based ROMs like SlimKat, AOKP, and CM11. Would any of the 4.4 ROMs (non-touchwiz) be "unrootable"? And is this process reversible? Can I re-root later if needed? Can the bootloader remain unlocked while the ROM is not rooted?
Part of me thinks - just get an unlocked MotoX and stop all this flashing business...(blasphemy - I know!)
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Thanks for the reply - but my question was actually about whether any 3rd party ROMs would function properly after removing root. Actually - is it even POSSIBLE to remove root from a 3rd party ROM (maybe something like N3BULA or a 4.4 ROM like Slim) in the first place? Would it just FC constantly because certain parts of the ROM don't function correctly without root access?
Thanks!

Well N3bula yes.. There are options in Settings that require root. No you could choose not to use some of those options but that is up to you. Yes it is possible to remove root.. In SU I believe there is an option to unroot your device..Check it out..

OK. I really don't want to go down the "stock" path and end up with a locked BL - that is why i am looking for alternatives!
Thanks again!
Now I am starting to think that the 4.4 ROMs out there may not be very well suited to the idea of "unrooting".
I have tried a couple of 4.4 ROMs like CM11 and AOKP in the last couple of days, and there seems to be a recurring theme - they all have the Superuser menus built into the settings. Will this be problematic?
I have seen that the SuperSU app does have an unroot option in the settings, but I have read conflicting reports of what this actually does. It sounds like it removes the app, but leaves the binaries behind, and this might be detected by the root detection features in the Maas360 app.

Buying a used S4 - what should I know?

Hi there, I'm considering buying a used Verizon Galaxy S4 and I'm trying to determine what are the key points to know.
I am seeing a lot of discussion about the different bootloaders, different kernels, different android versions, etc. It seems like some phones cannot have the bootloader unlocked and some phones can't even be rooted. Can anyone explain that to me so I know what I should be looking for?
In addition, are there any especially pervasive hardware or software bugs that haunt the S4?
Thanks!

As far as I know the bootloader that can be unlocked is the MDK bootloader. It came with the original release with the SGS4. I don't personally know a whole lot about about MDK, as I'm on the the kitkat NC5 bootloader. One thing about phones that are still on MDK is that you can load any of the ROMs in the forum, at least to my knowledge. On my phone in particular the only ROMs that I can load are touchwiz based. So I can't load CM or any of the other AOSP based ROMs.
You can still find MDK phones on swappa and other sites I'm sure. Although they're typically marked up a little bit for being rare.

That seems strange to me that AOSP based ROMs can't be run just because the bootloader can't be unlocked. I'm coming from the Bionic which has a locked bootloader, but can still run AOSP ROMs. Maybe it's the kexec exploit for motorola phones that allows this and maybe Samsungs just don't have something that allows that? I dunno. Confusing.
Are you aware whether or not the most recent OTA for the S4 can be rooted (and therefore ROMed)? I'm just trying to figure out if there's a chance of me receiving a phone that simply cannot be rooted and ROMed.

Yeah that's what I'm on now. NC5 is the most recent OTA update, but you can gain root access using towelroot. There is 1 Google Play Edition ROM that's working for me. Though some features won't work because of the kernel differences. There's a thread for that in the Verizon SGS4 general thread.

You got it. No kexec support so no touching the kernel, therefore no AOSP.

Baseband should match your bootloader on a stock phone, but it only really represents your modem. To be sure about the bootloader, download "Phone Info*" from the Play Store and it will list your bootloader version.
Ah okay. Well thanks for correcting me on that part. I had thought the baseband version directly reflected the bootloader.
Baseband can be updated independently of the bootloader. Baseband is simply the software that controls the radio (cell network, wifi, etc.) For example my bootloader is mf3 but my Baseband is up to nc1 (better service where I live)
