Global question with TB - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im fixing to be stationed in Japan, im wondering if there is anyway to use my Thunderbolt over there? I know that with some other phones you can have them unlocked and use a local carriers SIM card, i didnt know there there was any option for me to continue using my TB while i am over seas... .Thanks in advance......

Well, the good news is you will be able to use your VZW phone in Japan according to their website. The bad news you will pay threw the nose if you do so for any length of time. And you won't be able to simply swap the sim card out. They don't have 4g LTE over there yet and there is not a 3g sim card you can put in there. Better to check on a Japanese phone unless the base has some special American VZW connectivity. Good luck!!

Install Skype and use over Wi-fi.
That's about it. Idk if there are any other options.

Sim card does not matter. If it did, no one would be able to port the phone to carriers like MetroPCS. Granted they don't have LTE working, but 3g will.
If the carriers over there have CMDA and support the frequencies found on the thunderbolt, you should in theory be able to flash it to their networks like you those that did for MetroPCS and such.

This but prepared for LARGE roaming charges.
If I were you, I'd call Verizon and suspend your service. If I'm not mistaken under the Soldiers and Sailors Act, you can suspend without penalty.
That Act works for credit cards/loans if you're deployed so I'd think it'd work for Verizon. No sense in paying for something you can't use.

That's about it.

Yeah you can use it on WiFi. It'll basically be the same thing as an ipod touch.

I would've told him to put that up in his store and make it known to all the customers to come in and see how quick Sprint comes in there and says "Uh, why do you have a seat over there. Let's chat, shall we?"

You should have told him that Sprint doesn't throttle data. Their speeds are already too slow.

Sprint's speeds near me are far greater than Verizon's. That may be completely due to Verizon's popularity, but I'm 100% happy with Sprint. Their 3G signal alone grants me just over 2,000 kbps DL.
I live in Philadelphia where the speeds are supposed to be great and they are terrible. I get like 200 to 300 kbps on average. The highest my 4g got was 4mbps. To tell you the truth if sprint fixed there network and started to throttle because of it I would be happier and I would actually be able to use data on my 3D.

Epic fail

So I am on the nj side of the Hudson river. I can walk a long block and reach the water. Anyways what is a fail is I get no service but i get good 4g lol I would think both services should go hand in hand if one works.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
It does seem like it should go hand and hand but you have different components in your phone. 4g radio being one of them, it has nothing to do with the actual phone service.
My "DU4L C0R3 SH00T3R" shot you down in 3D! Screw Tupac. "A,O,S,P BACK!" >_<
It's different towers, your 4G is coming from a Clear WiMax tower, your Sprint Voice & 3G is coming from a Sprint Cell tower.

Don't see why not. Your 4g radio is a completely seperate radio, kinda like wifi.
also wimax is a higher band, meaning it will travel further distances than your 3g, but have less building penetration.
Still sucks... I would think that sprint would have upgraded or add the 4g towers aside the service ones Idk. I just hope it gets better

Sprint is upgrading their towers to be all-in-one (they call it "Network Vision"). I work in a Sprint store here in NYC and we have a Network Vision tower on our roof right now. According to my manager, we also have an [inactive] LTE tower as well.

4G Wimax was rolled out by Clearwire, an amateur wireless wholesaler. This current 4G LTE rollout is by Sprint. If Sprint fails to build out LTE by the end of 2013 as projected, then the company probably has doomsday issues.

The FCC shut down Light Squared alternatives, due to GPS interference. So, Light Squared will soon be Lights Out.
Sprint will have their own LTE network, and if Clear does actually put out a LTE network, they will use that, too. Sprint mentioned possibly using two different LTE technologies.

Ok so basically if I understand correctly, the LTE towers that are being put up in Texas are by Sprint themselves. Sprint was planning to use LightSquared to expand their network but that is not going to to happen due to recent regulations. So basically now Sprint has to expand their LTE network by themselves.

I really don't have any problem with calls or conectivity in different areas, but the 3G data is horrible recently. Luckily the LTE network is coming in some places and the data speeds are blazing. I just hope it's more widespread soon.

Could we get a section just for speed related topics? Maybe in the sprint.com forums? I'm getting sick of all the data speed discussions on phone specific forums. We all know Sprint 3G data sucks for some and its ok for others. Could we move on already or just go to another carrier.

I live in Atlanta and Its been having a lot of ups and downs for a while here. but now i've got the new EVO 4g LTE and I am just assuming its because the 3g is getting raped all over the place because they havent launched the LTE network and so everyone(including myself) has to use the hell out of it until they get the new network up and running. We just had updates in central Wisconsin a month or two ago and my data went from about 200k to about 2.2Mbps overnight. My evo lte connects perfectly to the new tower hardware, but is slow (100-150) on the older towers. Oddly, we also now have wimax in the woods near the upgraded tower, but it doesn't show on sprints map.
According to the local techs I know, the hardware throughout northern Wisconsin is about 50% complete and late should be set to go in all current 3g areas of the state by December...but that implied sprint just flips the switch the moment they can.
Either way, my findings are evo with new tower, great...with old tower slightly worse than my nexus.
