I saw a thread in the development section about getting your tab back to stock, but since I can't post in there because of my post count, I suppose I'll have to ask here.
Essentially I'd like to backup all of my things, return the tablet to stock, but also keep a couple of the touchwiz apps. Does anyone know if this is possible or how I'd be able to do it? Thanks

While not the expert on this, I don't believe you can keep the touchwiz apps with stock Honeycomb 3.1 due to framework changes in touchwiz. However, post 2 in this thread might be what you're looking for. It does remove some apps though but it is probably the best mix of stock and touchwiz. If not, then the third entry in this link will help you revert to stock 3.1 if you don't have a stock backup. Look for the hc-3.1 zip file.
Thanks, although that's a bit depressing. I loved samsung's reader (ability to open PDFs stored locally, couldn't figure that out using google books), and myfiles was a good explorer I thought.
Okay so now I need to root to get titanium backup right? I have some data on games and such that I'd like to save.
What is stock to you? 3.1 Vanilla Honeycomb? What apps do you want to keep? not all will work without TouchWiz. What data do you want or need to back up? Get Astro File Explorer from the Market for free. LEt me know the answers and i can guide you from there.

Yeah, when I say stock I mean 3.1 vanilla HC, like my tab before the update.
The only ones I'd like to keep are myfiles and the ebook app, and I have the apk for those files now.
The data I want to backup is just from a couple of games I think. Not sure there is anything else.
Only possible to do if you root and stay rooted in Honecomb 3.1 vanilla. You won't be able to run Titanium without it. Here is stock firmware for our tab but this won't let you restore your app data because its not rooted. You need to go to the first post in Android Development and download the rooted vanilla rom then run titanium.

Is it possible to just "root" my gtab and then install the market app from an APK? Once to do the CMW thing, that enables root, yeah? I'm really not wanting to install a new ROM until something stable comes out Honeycomb-wise, yeah?
Thanks a bunch,
Some ROMs require a separate load of GAPPS, which includes Market. And there are a couple good 3.0 ROMs already. Gtab Comb is pretty solid.
Soooo, no?

See this post http://http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/apps/forums/topics/show/5179881-how-i-added-gapps-market-to-a-stock-1-2-4349-gtab. It will let you install the google apps on 1.2.4349 stock BUT it will break Contacts (it will force close) and it's an older version of Market. If you can live with that then take a look. But, I would recommend you switch to Caukulin+Clemsyn Combo V6, it is MUCH faster than stock and very stable. You can go here to 'Good Intentions' site (gTablet for Dummies) for step by step instructions http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/.
Thanks guys. Went with GtabComb for now.
Hi-
just getting ready to root my new GT10, I have a few questions and also looking for a little advice:
1) I've been using this for about two weeks, so I already have some data in the applications, and lots of settings. Is it possible to back this up before I root? Titanium backup requires root; is there other software? Especially a few games; random mahjong and plants vs zombies. (BTW- not talking about files like pictures or pdfs; I can get those).
2) The rooting instructions are a bit jumbled; I see that the author tried very hard to catch everything but in doing so he put in a lot of non-sequiturs (in other parts of the instructions, he'll say to do or not do things, but no indication of when that is in the process...). Is there a clearer set of instructions; possibly numbered? Anything with photos?
3) I really like the touchwiz updates; I see there are a few ROMs with touchwiz; are these the same as the touchwiz on a stock GT10? Also, do any of the ROMs allow customization of the pop-up bar (change those applications to apps I'll actually use?)
4) Finally--a request for advice on ROM choice. (I know: try them; each one is different, choose one that works for you...). I don't have a lot of time for installing and trying out new ROMs; I just want one that (a) works; (b) will not be too much trouble to update; (c) strips out all of the apps that are available for free via the market (or at least allows me to delete the ones I want).
Thank you!
bump. Anyone have any suggestions?n
Bump....same questions for same reasons.
Docs slim 6.5 does all that I belive and is a good rom. I'm using his deodexed TW rom and I just use titanium backup to remove apps.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. Any ideas on the other parts of the question: specifically, a request for better rooting instructions? Also, is there any software to back up before I root?
I followed these instructions to root my tab:
http://galaxytabhacks.com/galaxy-tab-10-1-hacks/how-to-root-galaxy-tab-10-1-the-easy-way/
Very easy, step-by-step guide. Was done in 5 minutes and all data was safe and sound after the process.
I haven't felt the need to install a custom rom yet so no advice from me on that topic.
Thank you! I am rooted! That answers the question of "can I back up before I root?" The answer of course is that you don't need to! Rooting doesn't do anything to the files on the tablet! (that's for any other newbie like me who can't figure out the files. Now to find a good rom...)
Hello
New to Tab and rooting, so been playing with the different ROM’s All great, thanks. I followed the pinned guide, which was great. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1171089
However, I would like to unroot and get it back to original state. I tried the “[ROM]Stock US Retail WiFi” but it looks like that is for the IO version as the TW update wont apply?
I have the GT-P7510MA (VXAB) i.e. US version, 32Gb WIFI. So looking for the StockROM so I can restore it back to the exact same state that it was when opened. I will then like to apply the TW update OTA.
I have looked around and it seems like a few people are looking for it.
(or am I asking a stupid question?)
Thanks
Eric…
BUMP!
WHY ISNT THIS AVAILABLE ANYWHERE, WTF!!!!
My tab was going through a boot loop because of an update that failed for no good reason. So, then i decided to flash back to stock, only to find a handful of unhelpful people pointing to allegedly "US Stock" roms, most of which were for the European 32gb wifi model, with the exclusion of the rom stated in the first post. PLEASE can someone with a US wifi model just make a cwm backup so i can flash it and start receiving stock OTA updates again? Honestly i'm BEGGING at this point.
Looking for this too
Guys, I've done a bit of googling and this page has a link to a stock 3.1 OTA rom. I have not tried it myself (not rooted) and I don't know for sure if it's a US rom, perhaps someone can take a look. It is on a US hosted website, so maybe it's OK?
http://galaxytabhacks.com/galaxy-tab-10-1-hacks/how-to-unroot-your-galaxy-tab-10-1/
That guy as well many other sites take the information from XDA. You can always download the files and do a checksum check to see what comes up with. Look also at the DroidBasement files.
I respect your choice to use the TW update. Personally, I find it fills your tablet with insane bloatware, not to mention the ugly theme. If you want the TW update, I would recommend you to use the Starburst ROM, which has the TouchWiz applied and is like a zillion times better compared to stock ROM.
Still, for the love of God... why would you want TouchWiz on your tablet? It is a HUGE step backwards, not to mention it breaks the Android keyboard. OK, it improves a little the quadrant scores... other that that, is pure garbage IMO.
well as far as I know and from searching XDA, there is no stock clean 3.1 ROM For the GT-P7510MA yet, unless i'm mistaken

Thanks, I am currently using Starburst ROM which is great, but there are many reasons why we would want to restore back to factory state.
Warranty return
Selling the device
Test if the Custom ROM is causing problems. (see my screen problem qstn in the other forums)
etc...
So while I understand that there are better ROM's, it would be good if the stock ROM was available.

Thanks, but tried that one as well and its not the right ROM. That is the IO version ROM. Same as in the root guide here
This is the touchwiz ux rom: http://droidbasement.com/galaxy/touchwiz-ux/hc-3.1_touchwiz_ux-full_sam_tab_10.1.zip
And this one is the stock honeycomb rom: http://droidbasement.com/galaxy/sys-backup/hc_31/hc-3.1_ota-full_sam_tab_10.1.zip
Both are the latest of their kind, for the wifi tab, I tried both and they are 100% stock, not rooted roms.
Then flash back the stock recovery with ODIN, and you can send the tab back to Samsung, they won't be able to detect anything.
Bye.
Great Thanks will try them out.
When you tried the "stock Honeycomb ROM" could you apply the TW update and the second update as well?
Thanks

I have not tried that, but I can't see why it wouldn't work, provided that you flashed back the stock recovery with ODIN.
OTA updates don't play nice with clockwork recovery...

The reason I ask is that the stock recovery download link provide is exactly the same size as the IO version so I'm assuming its not the P7510MA version.
I haven't had time to try it yet, but doesn't look like its the right one.
TW update is not available on the IO version
I am completetly new in this with rooting and everything but I thought I would take a shot at it. Now, practically my only need is for the standard camera app to remain, the samsung regular one. What types of ROMs have that built in? I know that the CM10 does not have it, or is there a way to sideload it?
Only Samsung ROMs have the stock Samsung camera app, it'll never work on anything else. If you like the look of pure Google though your best bet is chamelion rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847600) however its only android v 4.0.4 (edit its beta 4.1.2). Its stock Samsung but has aokp features
Hmm, I was rather hoping that the CM10 would work. Then I have a second question. Can I root the standard rom I have and add tweaks, mods, remove useless apps etc?

Yes. Flash Siyah kernel, and search (or try for yourself) for extra settings in Stweaks you can use. To remove apps you can use Titanium Back up.
Sent from the Matrix
Hmm. Well that seems quite good. In what steps do I root and apply the kernel and what is this CWM that everyone is talking about. And everyone suggest that you back up everything with Titanium. Can I do that even without being rooted?

First read the threads/stickies here and find out the answers to these questions for yourself. Already asked a million times.
And no, you can't use TB without root.

So what programs are best to use to backup before the whole rooting thing?

I actually don't think there is any app that workes like TB. If there is (which I doubt), I wouldn't know as I always use TB.
But why would you want such a 'serious' back up if you're not going to flash new roms?

As I said I'm completely new on this and I've read a few threads and articles about it. I don't know what things will wipe my phone and what won't. I'm still deciding between getting CM10 or SlimBean and use another camera app from Android Market or if I just root the phone...
I will need to compare ProCapture and the Stock Camera app firstly and then decide I think.

Especially then it's important you search and read a bit more, so you understand what you are doing.
Why not root your phone and flash a Samsung based rom? In that case you have your stock camera, and you can add a lot of tweaks, mods etc. to your phone.

This will help you (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vw_za0mQorw) Also the rom I linked to (chameleon) the 4.1.2 will have cyanogenmod features, built on stock Samsung base.
I have read about rooting my phone for a long time, and I think I am finally going to do it. I really want to start using Google Wallet so that is the final push to root.
I do have a question that I have not been able to find the answer yet. I use Nova Prime launcher currently - will I use this once rooted? If so, when i root, is it similar to doing a factory reset - where I have to reinstall everything? If so what is the best way to back everything up? Titanium backup is only available for a rooted phone.
I know there are thousands of posts on rooting, but I couldn't find this answer.

You will be able to keep Nova Launcher when rooted and you'll be able to take advantage of the features when rooted.
Most ways to root now do not need/cause a factory reset.

Thank you for your reply. I have noticed lately that when I launch chrome, and start to search it is a bit laggy. If I root, will the performance increase?

Thanks for this question. I've been looking for missing things in my Understanding the basics before rooting your S3 thread.
I've added this under the "popular misconceptions" section.
Can I just say though, please can you post questions in q&a? General is not for questions or support

I don't think the two are related. Rooting won't increase the performance of an app. It might be an issue with chrome
