Htc evo view 4g - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

Hello, I'm sure this has been mentioned many times, but how come there is no separate development section for this device?
From what i've heard the Flyer is just the WiFi version? and the EVO View 4G is the Sprint version with WiFi/4G
How can developers develop without being able to distinguish between one from the other?

I don't understand it either. It doesn't even have to be it's own section but like a sub-section within the flyer's section. This has been brought up before and I think we are just being ignored.

i don't understand it either. Who do we need to get in touch with to add in a sub-section.
I also don't understand how you were the only one to comment on this. Like is there no other HTC View customers out there on this site? Surely can't believe that.

Perhaps now that we have a reliable s-off development will start to pick up and it will get split appropriately...

I don't mind it too much. The roms are labeled if they are view or flyer. truthfully, I would prefer a subforum but it would be too quiet.

^^^^^Quiet would be easier to get info for our specific device.
Not the first. I also put up a thread asking but it was soon pushed to the bottom of the list because no one was responding to it. I have asked many times in many different threads. My wife has a view and I have it rooted but not wanting to go to far from that because it seems all the dev is for flyer and not view. Don't want to get into something and then have no support.
Edit: I sent a pm to the forum admin so hopefully he will have some info.

Nope. The US version of the Flyer is WiFi only, but Europe (and Asia? Maybe other regions) have both WiFi-only, and a WiFI/3G versions of the Flyer.
Aside from Sprint branding, there is little or no difference between the View and the Wifi/3G Flyer.
Its easy for the devs to indicate in their thread what version(s) their ROM works on. This is how it works for every other device on this forum that has carrier variants. If the dev doesn't say, you ask. Not that hard.
And you also have clever guys like the team that is making the FlyHigh ROM, which automatically detects whether you have a 3G version or not.

Just so it's clear I'm not trying to start a fight. It just seems that Flyer users seem to say "they are so similar, except for x,y and z differences.
So you are saying that the flyers roms will work on the View? No
If they are so similar then why are they separate in their development? Multiple roms for flyer and 2 for view.
Also if this smart rom is detecting the 3g/wifi only version of the flyer how does this help View users?
I am only looking for clarification because you answered a question in a thread asking for a view thread. And that doesn't answer why there is no place for view users to go. You merely stated the are alike but that still does not mean Flyer roms will work on View, or does it?. If they are so similar then one rom should fit all. Correct?(yes I know flyer has no 4g)
I also got a response from Mike the admin and he said he will put it on a request list(subforum for view). He does not make the final decision but the person who does will see this request.

Do you know whether its actually impossible for a ROM to work on the Flyer and the View? I personally don't have the knowledge to say, but my gut feeling is that a dev can make a ROM that works on any version, if they wanted to. Unless there is so much different between the Sprint radio and the Flyer one, that a completely different ROM is needed.
Same way their was a script incorporated in the FlyHigh ROM to sense the version, my thought is a dev can incorporate something similar for Flyer/View, or have something like the carrier provisioning for phone ROMs.
So its seems like its a question on whether there really is enough technical difference wit the View to justify a seperate dev forum. But when someone says their should be a separate subforum, since the "Flyer is WiFi only", its pretty clear that they don't know enough to make that determination.

I don't know if it is impossible to run flyer roms on the view. But I assume they can't because why else would they be developing separately. Unfortunately It's my wifes view tab so I can't just use it as a test bunny. If it was mine to do with what I please I would test flash one of the flyer roms. I also know someone who didn't get a data plan and is using their view tab as wifi only. I am curious if without a data plan maybe a flyer rom would work because the radios are not needed. Or if we did flash onto data plan view maybe everything would be cool except for 3g/4g parts. But if you pay for that service I'm sure you would not want a rom that couldn't use it.
I guess the next step is to look at the two roms side by side. I don't know enough about these things to see how technically different they are. Is there any dev that is making roms for both the flyer and view? Maybe that person would know the differences and if one rom can fit all. Then instead of a flyer forum it can morph into a flyer/view forum. It can be a bit confusing for some not to see their device listed in the forum section. Especially since the view is rooted and dev is going on. And some might just think that the similarities mean flyer roms can be flashed and possibly break things. I know it's their fault but you know how some flash happy people are.

The WiMAX radio begs to differ.

I have the wifi only Flyer and my ROM is made for the wifi only one. However, as I get deeper into the programming of it, I do see all the wimax coding in the wifi only version. I imagine it is just turned off. I don't have a View or I would play around to try to get it to work. Currently, I believe if a View owner flashed a wifi only ROM, everything should work except 3G/4G which defeats the purpose in my opinion.

Actually, I tried doing that. Clockwork recovery wouldn't start the installation. I don't think it will defeat the purpose because I use it as a WIFI-only device and pretty there are some out there doing the same.

Is the source code posted on the HTC developers website for the flyer's kernel compatible with the view, possibly, then? I've been holding off on a custom kernel because I thought that it wouldn't work with 4g on the view

[EVO VIEW][HC][WIP]HoneyComb on the Evo View 4G

Introduction:
This project is temporarily on hold due to financial hardships. I plan to be back very soon.
Since we have HoneyComb for the Flyer already, I wanted to start a thread to try and get HC ported to the View for us Sprint junkies. I'd like to gather information, not only for porting HC, but for the View as a whole. I've done a ton of searching and still haven't found hardly any info for it.
Questions:
These are the random questions I have for now:
-Does the View run the same hardware as the Flyer?
-What all hardware is in the View?
-What are the odds of successfully flashing the Flyers Radio.img/hboot.img to the View
-Others that I haven't thought of, or don't have the time to write out at the moment.
I'd greatly appreciate all the support I can get on this. I'm not familiar with the View or Flyer at all. I come from Evo 4G and Evo 3D development and would really like to get into the View as well.
Thanks in advance everyone.
Reserved...
Mine too...
Can't contribute much right now, but like the train of thought. I can't imagine hardware wise anything other than the radio is different.
I'd like to know what the flyers partitions look like. If someone could run adb shell df - h and paste the output here that would help immensely.

Wow, I'm very glad someone has come up and decided to do this.
1. I feel like it might be a bit of a waste considering HC is SUPPOSED to be officially released in the future. So it would suck if you did all this hard work to make the port and then like 2 weeks later we get the official version to work with.
2. I will run that command when I get home in like an hour and show you the output.
I wouldn't mind helping you in someway, if I can. I'm familiar with linux command line and such ie. i know what df -h does and what it means and all that stuff, BUT I've never played around with making ROMs or anything like that.
Any help I can give, I'm down to do. Good luck.
edit: I see you are looking for the FLYER'S parition table, not the view's.... my bad.
I feel like a complete douche in doing this but I have to put this project on hold. I've recently come into some financial trouble and had to sell my View for some extra cash. I do have plans to continue this project once I can manage to afford another View. As for the possibility of HTC releasing HC for it before I can get it going, oh well, thats the risk we take when we develop lol.
Can I help beta test this once its up again?
Would it help for the dev to own both a flyer and a view to get development done?
I haven't gotten to take a look at the flyer, but I am under impression that the view is not too much different...
We also have a donation going on in the general chat for someone to develop on the view, if this works for the OP
Apart from the 4G and CMDA capabilities, the flyer and the evo view 4G are one and the same tablet.

Yeah, only the radios and the color are different. I suppose if you could take the official HC build for the Flyer and somehow merged the WiMax and CDMA code into that build it may work, but I'm not well versed on how to go about doing that. I see builds on the Evo 3D that are Sense 3.5 but they don't have working 4G for whatever reason.
On the OG Evo they made 4G work on CM7 by building code from the ground up to work with the hardware, but it hasn't moved over to 3D yet and there is no official build from CM for the 3D. Maybe that code could be ported? Of course it would probably have to be an AOSP build which I've not seen yet for either the View or Flyer.
I sold my Flyer Wifi and picked up an Evo View 4G so hopefully this gets sorted out. Would really like to get Honeycomb on the View. I really enjoyed it on the Flyer!

Actually there are more differences that that, although that is where they all stem from for sure.
We don't even have source for the Flyer HC release yet, so the work needed would be even worse. It's really not worth looking at until we have source and by that time given the traditional HTC lag in releasing it we'll have HC on the view already.

I was reading about here for the possibility of an AOSP build, if there is one done, it's likely we would loose pen input functionality on Flyers and Views since it seems to be based on sense.

Yeah that was quick, I'm sure it's no coincidence it was right before Christmas. I'll miss the hardware keys but its for my daughter anyways, don't think she'll mind
make sure to read globatron's sticky in the general section before accepting the HC OTA update. strong recommendation to wait until there is a patched hboot so that your device isn't forced back into a permanent s-on
Honeycomb for EVO View is now available!!

Honeycomb for EVO View is now available. While its a huge change and many more features are available, I'm skiddish about loosing some apps which won't work in 3.2.
Please post your reviews of the new system. Many of us would love to read about your experience.

[Q] Flyer ROMs on the View 4G

I have read through a few forum posts and done some searching, yet never found an answer to the following question:
- If the HTC View 4G is just going to be used as a WiFi tablet, with no intentions of running on Sprint, can HTC Flyer ROMs be loaded on the device?
In other words, if I don't care that the 4G or carrier capabilities are lost, can those ROMs still be loaded? Or could they be stuck on Gingerbread forever?
The reason I ask is because I purchased two of the View 4Gs as Christmas presents because of killer deals this week. I know both recipients will be all about rooting and ROMing.
Thanks all!

Thank you for the links. That at least answers the question with a NO.
Besides the fact that it is no, I am not seeing why that is? The linked post asked a great question as to what was different, but I don't see that answered. If it is really technical then fine...could someone break it down for me at a high-level?
I would assume that this is because of the CDMA and WIMAX radios built in?
As far as I understand what you stated is correct. There is one rom for the view atm

Search a little harder and you'll find a post from me sometime in the last week were I listed the reasons.
Thank you globatron. I saw one of your posts had this:
"...there are hboot, partition, address space, boot offsets and a few other things that are different. It's simply not feasible without a HC compatible view hboot."
I also saw in the same thread that it appears that HC will release for the View at some point soon. Given your comment above, once an official source comes out from HTC, does that mean that it might be possible in the future? Just no promises?
It sounds like it would depend on how HTC went about developing the View HC source in relation to how the Flyer HC source was developed.
Interesting stuff.
The list of honeycomb reasons is the same as the list of differences between the two and the reasons for a flyer rom not working on a view.
I can say for certain that the ROMs will still not be cross-flashable under hc.
OK, thank you!

ICS from XOOM to Flyer?

XOOM got ICS port right now, with everything working well (except face unlock, but hey...)
does that mean anything for us Flyer/View-owners? is it possible to port it to our tablet?
would love ics on the flyer
EDIT: Link: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/highly-functioning-cm9-kang-released-for-the-xoom/
what does it mean to us? That the xoom got an ics port, nothing more or less.
Different hardware types and kernels mean xoom with ics is meaningless to us.
My guess is he was asking if there was a way to port it and mod it to work. What we really need to hope for of CM9.x to arrive that will support the Flyer/Evo View.

hahha somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed, or are you always this negative? haha relax
im not stupid, i know that its a diffrent tablet, but this kinds of ports are being done almost daily.
as this fella mentioned, i was thinking of a mod, to get it to work.
He's not being grouchy, just straight forward. You cannot port a ROM complied for a completely different family of hardware and get it to function in any conceivable fashion. You'd be better off with a SDK build of ICS which would possibly boot if you hacked in a boot image, but none of the HTC specific hardware like camera, BT or video would function. There are already efforts underway to build ICS ROMs. Since ICS is built on top of HC, we have most of the pieces to build a vanilla ROM (no HTC Sense). Once HTC comes out with a working HTC device ICS ROM on hardware that is similar to the Flyer (yes some of their phones use similar hardware) that will be the port we want for ICS /Sense Roms.
I would love to have ICS on this device. Considering how much dev interest the blowout sales have generated I think its possible. But I am not going to how my breathe. I have a galaxy nexus but my evo view is still my primary device due to its pen and large screen. My wishlist for the next iteration of this device is: lighter, ICS, sprint 4g LTE in that exact order
Hopefully the fire sales have pushed HTC to keep going.

yeah i know, but since ive seen others with ics, that made me a bit inpaitient
htc sensation got the ics leaked, and maybe someone can start by playing with that one.
and i dont really care if its manilla or sense, both will do good dont think flyer/view will be getting any ICS official soon, since HC just was released.
if i seemed grouchy, it may be because I am a comp sci major with aspirations of being a software engineer. I view the question as either yes or no and then explain the logic why not. No intentions of rudeness, but I tend to assume I'm talking to ppl with similar backgrounds... At least on the net anyway.

We are keeping an eye on the HTC Sensation leak. Right now there are 2 or 3 pages of things that don't work and of course its a different radio and HBOOT. So its a ways out from being useful as a port other than a novelty. By that I mean you might get something to boot, but none of the hardware functions like camera and touch screen would work.
May want to wait for something more stable to port..sounds more like a way to brick a flyer than a novelty.
How much difference is there between sensation and flyer? Also is the radio relevant for the WiFi flyer.
I keep forgetting the are 3g versions of the flyer.

whats the chances of a HC/ICS mix then, do you know? i mean, using what might be working in ICS (the best of it) combined with the useabilities of the HC.

1. ICS is built on top of HC so we already have most of the ICS GUI. Google is already moving some of the ICS features into individual apps like the updated Google Search.
2. Radio is always relevant because it controls GPS, Wifi , and BT in addition to 3g.

ICS/JB for HTC flyer

Hello, first post
Now I have an HTC flyer and that means I am stuck with HC firmware or perhaps maybe GB.
There are a lot of fully functional customized HC ROMS out there, however when it comes to ICS or JB
most of them are buggy and never fully functional.
I am not a developer so I don't think that I have the right to criticize, however from what I see
many developer start an ICS or JB Flyer ROM and than just leave it.
It would be great if you people create some sort of a joint effort and make one stable and functional rom for the flyer.
Some would say just leave the flyer and buy yourself a Nexus or whatever but the thing is there are countries in this world where we can;t afford to just give up on a device and spend money on another one.
So what I would like to have is either an ICS or JB ROM where everything would be functional, however I could live without:
(and these are features that are already not working on the present ICS/JB roms)
-bluetooth
-front camera
-youtube HD (but only HD if regular youtube is missing is not OK)
-videorecorder (however this would be disappointing)
But It wold be awesome if Phone is implemented and Pen (Quill is acceptable also)
So far best ICS ROMS are Yetki (where only problem I had was that wi-fi was not functioning even with manual flashing of the boot.img)
Also another new ROM is this one NexusFlyer in this ROM everything works (except for the above features) but I am not sure if there's a Phone function and the screen rotating is buggy.
So what are you willing to donate towards the developers' efforts? The "you people" in question have lives and families and jobs that require their attention on a daily basis. These ROMs are hobbies for them.
Their works are just voluntaty works.
They don't have any obligation to make roms for us.
They've already done and are doing many things for us, more than HTC
I understand it's a voluntary work and a hobby for most of them, but since they are already doing it, how abot making something that truly benefits people.
HTC has done a horrible job when it comes to the flyer and now we're either stuck woth HC albeit slightly modified, or waiting for the developer community to make something usefull.

Just stop right there. If the devs want to stop developing a ROM, that's their choice. You think what they have done has not truly benefited the people?
It has benefited people no doubt aboit it. Just not in this case, when it comes to the flyer they did better than HTC but I don't see any benefit in using any ICS based Flyer rom, rather than a HC custom rom.
It's complicated simce the Flyer has the scribe technology built in, notes, the e-book reader where you can scribble just like on real paper, front camera, back camera, I understand that it's complicated and maybe it takes time maybe it can not be done.
I don't understand what's with all this negative interpretation of my post, it should be an incentive that we are here we use this device and we would like to see it better.
Also I am not asking the developers to waste time on something useless, I don't need yet another partialy functional ROM, just stop right there say 'we can't do it,it's impossible' and move on to something that will perhaps benefit someone else, some other device. They are developers, it's what they do.

thx for u'r answer, that different with my tablet, Wi-fi and tethering working fine.
yups.. I be waiting for the update, hope today he update this ROM.
Hey, we are not their employer or their customer.
Whether they stop the development, move to other device or etc., it is just their choice.
If they think something is important, they try to do their best to make it work.(Actually, they do now.)
You don't see any benefit on their ICS rom? Just go back HC or give some useful feedback to them.
using :
HTC Flyer ICS yetki
HTC Desire MIUI ICS
It looks like Yetki is getting an update reały soon as in it only needs to be uploaded and shared, can't wait to test it! I loved it even the first time except wi-fi wasn't working, hoping theu will fix it in the update

IF you really want to develop ICS /JB fully functional ROMs for the HTC Flyer , start by learning how to build the kernel. What we are missing right now is a JB kernel for the Flyer, once that is done, its possible to begin CM10 and other variants of JB. However, be aware that building the kernel and the libs (drivers) for HTC devices can be difficult because not everything is open source.
We can't all be developers, I don't think learning how to build ROMs is as easy as the last few comments made it look. I am assuming some programmers would have a hard time doing so if they haven't had any experience into it let alone ppl that don't code. :/

for active wi-fi connection try to rollback to HC ROM (I try use leedroid and fastboot flash boot boot.img event I'm not use s-off from htcdev) after running fine, back to recovery full wipe, and upgrade to Yetki ROM without fastboot *.img file again. test running and wi-fi can active again. for tethering just install easytether.
CMIIW
Thanks I will try that.
Does it have to be a HC ROM because right now I am on Dexter's JB port and If I don't have to I'd skip a flash

Is it just me, or is the development section for this phone a ghost town?

I remember the HTC Evo days. Boy, I spent hours-a-day browsing the development section on XDA to get my flash fix. That carried over with my Samsung Galaxy S2 and then the S3. Now that I'm considering coming back to HTC for a fresher experience, I found myself jaw-dropped at how ghostly the development forums are. I figured this could be a result of the phone being so young; so I went to the GS4 to see if that holds true. Wow... what a difference. Those forums seem busier than hell. And it's only been about a month since it was released as well.
Anyone have any idea why that is? I've been trying to convince myself to get the HTC One. I got over the fact that it lacks a replaceable battery, a MicroSD card, and recently, I got over the fact that the images are just not all that it's hyped up to be. I figured I'd be transitioning to the Moto X Phone when that comes out later in the year, so I might as well put-up with these shortcomings. But not having the development support that I experienced with the earlier HTC devices, and recently with the Samsung devices is just not something I think I can get over.
I am constantly thinking of the word "potential" when referring to this phone. What a shame. HTC had all the tools to flip the market on its feet, but it seems as if they came up short... again.
Check out the non-carrier-specific forum...it's pretty active.
EDIT: HTC didn't come up short, this phone is considered quite a success.
My theory for this specific forum being dead is that T-Mobile's national release of this phone was yesterday (06/05/2013). Before that, it was only available in their "high-volume" locations.
Oh wow. And all of those will work with the Tmo version?
Sent from my badass Samsung Galaxy SIII.
yea all the development is in the international forum. all roms on that forum will work on the tmo htc one and they work very well. i have flashed every sense based rom and most of the aosp roms. definitely not a ghost town over there:good:
Yeah, they should. But as always, continue at your own risk.

As you've noticed by now, there's plenty of developer support for the HTC One. It's all just confined to the general HTC One forums, which makes sense, as the various roms can be used on the AT&T, T-Mobile, and international HTC One's. Most developers don't want to have to maintain 3 or more separate threads for the same thing.
As was pointed out though, if you're looking for T-Mobile wifi calling compatibility, be careful about the ROMs you flash. Since the 4.2.2 OTA for T-Mobile isn't out yet, no 4.2.2 ROM is going to support it. I'd suggest Android Revolution 9.4, or a similar 4.1.2 ROM if WIFI calling is essential to you.
Also, since a Google edition of the phone is going to be coming out in the near future, developer support is likely going to expand even further.
So I think it's safe to say you can put your fears to rest and buy an HTC One. I don't think you'll regret it.
Yea I've been hanging out in the International One forums as almost all their ROMs work for us.
This forum really shouldn't even have a development section since there's not really any specific T-Mo stuff that needs to be done.
Every single ROM in the GSM section will work for T-Mo. There isn't a single one that won't work. The only thing you lose is T-Mo's branded stuff and T-Mo's wifi calling (as they are the only ones who do Wifi calling)/

Thanks you guys so much for your replies. I'm happy to see that the development forums for the One is indeed thriving. I'm more confident in snagging a one over the GS4 now.
Indeed, I don't see a reason as to why even bother with a Tmo specific section.

I was able to dig up an old link for Android Revolution 9.4 but can't find a description or list of features etc for it. Are you positive it has wi-fi calling in it?
I haven't owned an HTC since the OG Nexus One (had all Nexus devices since) so I'm reading up on S-OFF etc before I flash a new ROM. I really want to try out wifi calling though so that's why I'd like to make sure. Thanks in advance!
PS - link to ROM if anyone wants it: http://www.androidrevolution.nl/downloader/download.php?file=Android_Revolution_HD-One_9.4.zip

9.4 definitely has wifi-calling. I'm on 9.3 at the moment and wifi-calling works perfectly for me on T-Mobile. In the installer, just be sure to select T-Mobile as your carrier and it will install all the necessary files for wifi calling.
Also, note that S-Off isn't required to flash this ROM. All you need to do is unlock your device through HTC Dev, located at the HTC Dev site. I'd give you a direct link, but asinine restrictions in place on this forum are preventing that at the moment. Just Google HTC Dev and it will be the first result. You can't miss it.
Anyway, unlike with earlier HTC devices, this unlock method allows you to flash everything you need to update the ROM. Only some of the "black box" partitions like the radio and bootloader aren't flashable when it's unlocked with this method, but to my knowledge, no ROM requires that, and furthermore, the Nexus devices are very similar in that respect.
The only real advantage to S-Off is if you plan on flashing a different carrier's RUU, altering the radio, or changing your CID. Anyway, just something to be aware of.
Good luck.

Sweet, thanks I'll definitely try 9.4 then! Reception in my office all day is terrible so I'm excited to try wi-fi calling.
I think I understand in theory why S-OFF would not be needed. but the nerd in me wants full control with S-OFF.. Also, if I use S-OFF, i can return my phone to bone-stock and keep warranty right? As amazing as the hardware on the HTC One is (I've gotten used to sub-standard hardware with the Nexus line), I'm not 100% sure yet I want to keep it.
Any chance you could educate me on what CID is for? Evidently it may restrict/allow flashing ROMS from certain regions?
Also, I believe I have a basic understanding of what an RUU is, but could you elaborate for me by any chance? I believe it's basically an all i one installer for a full stock ROM?
Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but this T-Mo sub forum seems a bit more forgiving than some other areas

It's worth doing to S-OFF. If you do, you'll have the ability to relock the phone and put it back to S-ON with zero indication that you ever messed with it. Also, CIDs are used to restrict ROMs from certain carriers to only be installed on certain devices. It's really only a stock or stock-leak ROM limitation, I don't think a single ROM in either the regular or original development section is CID-locked. Either way, if you are S-OFF, you can change your CID code to whatever you want it to be (the code "111111") is referred to as "SuperCID" because that allows you to in theory run an RUU/OTA from ANY Carrier regardless.
You are correct about what an RUU is. However, each RUU is specific to a build of Android made by the carrier, and so far, I think only the Sprint RUU is out. No one has a T-Mo RUU yet (but you really don't need one, all you have to do is flash the stock rooted ROM from our section here and then unroot from the SU app options).
Enjoy tinkering.

Perfect, thanks for confirming all that. I think I'm ready to get the HTC-noob stink off of me The phone feels so amazing in hand, it's making me look at all these Nexus devices (Nexi?) I have in a bit of a different light.. And once the Google Experience software drops, hopefully I won't miss having a Nexus as my daily driver!
You guys are so awesome. I'm counting down the days until July 1st now when I'll get my hands on my own HTC One. =)

You're going to enjoy the One. It's the first Android phone to have the build quality of an iPhone with specs that beat the pants off it
The only thing that sucks about the One is that because it has such a high pixel density, you will be extremely sensitive and aware of pixels in all your other displays (laptop/desktop/tablet etc).
I own an ASUS Zenbook, which is a 13" ultrabook with a full 1920x1080p display which is retina-levels of dense on such a small screen (I think it's almost 170 pixels per inch). The One? The one is a whopping ~470 pixels per inch. It is stupidly dense and I promise you won't find a single pixel no matter how hard you look.
