Phone Won't Turn On - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all. I seem to have run into an issue with the Thunderbolt. For whatever reason, the phone died sometime during the night. I tried plugging it into the charger and waiting a couple of hours and tried to turn it on. Didn't work. Pulled battery, put it back in, the red light came on, but when I tried to turn it on, didn't work. I am rooted, so I don't think I can bring the phone back to Verizon. Anyone got any ideas?

Have you tried going into the bootloader (power + vol down key)?

Do you have an extra battery you can maybe try out?

After leaving the phone plugged in for approximately 10 hours, the light came on on the top of the phone, and I was able to start the phone. Funny thing, the battery life was at a minimum percentage.

Update: It seems that the phone once again died. I am going to try to unroot and just bring the phone into a Verizon store. Does anyone know what would happen?

They'll pass it along to the geeks in the back room who'll determine it's fate.... and yours. If it's a bum battery and your rooted, they'll replace it and promptly flog you 3 lashes against the customer payment kiosk. However, if it's the device that's at fault and found to be rooted, the device will not be replaced and you'll be branded with a large "R" in the middle of your forehead so all other carriers will know not to sell you an Android device. In the event no cause can be determined, you'll be strapped into "the chair" and have a polygraph administered by the most qualified Verizon rep on scene. (That's REALLY what those tables they all carry around are for!) Based upon those results you may be issued a new device accompanied with a suspicious sneer, or you may be issued as new device and a stern warning that if "you ever show your face in these parts again, we'll revoke your unlimited data and insurance..."

Haha, that would really be funny.
But in all seriousness, I do hope that I don't have to go return the phone. That would be a pain in my ass. I'm trying to figure out if I'm currently rooted or not, so that when I go back sometime this week, I won't have any issues. Do you happen to know how to check that?

Get rootchecker from the market, it will tell you if you are rooted.

Called Verizon trying for replacement. They said put in safe mode.

I told them that my phone was overheating and would freeze and shut off while on and off the charger after updating to ME7 (which it actually does). They told me to put it in safe mode for 24 hours and see what they find. I know I have to unroot it before putting it in safe mode. Anyone else have to do this to get a replacement? How did it work out for you?
That sounds like BS to me. Someone might tell you this in hopes that you somehow solve your own problem. But, I would just get irate and tell them that it's their responsibility so give me a claim number and tell me where to send the phone.

Sigh Verizon and their Walmart Techs.

I called verizon today, talked to the tech told him my phone kept losing 4g service and dropping my wifi signal all the time. Told them I restored it already twice and it didn't fix the issue. Tech said looks like you covered all area's you'll recieve your replacement in 2-4 days.
It's that simple :good:
My replacement phone I just received 2 days ago had no wifi strength and the bluetooth would skip when I was holding the phone (anyone ever heard of that happening?) I called them last night and told them I done everything I was supposed to (factory reset, troubleshooting) they over-nighted me a CLNR got it this morning. I'd call again and ask for someone else because I've never heard of safe mode on the phone-they just didn't want to do their job I believe....
I just wanted to make sure they can't get inside your phone or anything by putting it in safe mode. What should I tell them when I call back. Any messages or info come up when I take it out of safe mode that the tech may ask for?

Four tries before working replacement
I too had overheat problems w/ my phone(s). Including the original phone Verizon sent me four phones before a fulling working one arrived. The certified program, in my experience, is crap. I've gone through multiple models, S4 & Razr MAxx, when phones were replaced for faulty operation. Good news is the last, working, model S4 I recieved was still on MDK. It was rooted within the hour after receiving it. Eclipse ROM and never a problem since. Be persistent, call back as often as needed, and don't take no for an answer. And safe mode, bunch of bull****. Factory reset is only reliable fix. About half the time...

What they said-def keep calling back. I read in a post a few months back about someone saying Verizon was able to get into our phones to help look for the problem not sure how truthful that is-but I would not allow them to hop into your phone they could prob see if you rooted or not. My replacement was MDK thankfully all the bloat they put on these phones really burn me up. And sometimes it does take several replacements before you find one that is perfect-my husband went through 7 Rezound's before he got a good working one. Now I'm the one with the issues LOL

[Q] Found phone, MetroPCS won't help and I don't know what to do

This probably isn't the best place for this, but I don't really know where else to ask about it.
A few months ago I was on a trip and I found a MetroPCS phone that was locked. There was very little I could do about figuring out who the owner was (it wasn't anyone's in the group I was in) or trying to unlock the phone (no way!). When I got home, I called up MetroPCS and explained my predicament, but they were surprisingly unhelpful and basically told me I had to take it to the store, and even then they likely couldn't do anything for me or the owner. After a bit of arguing about how ridiculous that is, the support guy ended up essentially telling me to throw out/recycle the phone. Obviously there's a whole other issue here with their support on this issue, but I won't touch that at the moment.
Well, the nearest store is really far from me (over an hour away) and its out of the way from any normal driving I do, so I ended up just throwing the phone in a drawer for a while. I was cleaning up yesterday and I found it again, so I decided to look into this once more. Today I learned about ESN and IMEI blacklisting, and I looked the phone up to see and of course it is blacklisted because it was reported lost.
Is there anything I can do with this thing? I guess I could sell it for parts on eBay or something like that, but I feel weird selling a phone that a lot of potential buyers would yell "stolen!" at.

Wifi toy for the kids / nieces / nephews / friend ...?
Obviously the phone is a lost cause at this stage, despite your best efforts. Typically there is a way to use a button combo to get into recovery to wipe the phone so the previous user's data and passwords will be removed. How to do so, or if it is possible, depends on the model.

You can sell it, just list it as having a bad ESN/IMEI and "for parts".
If there's a SIM card, you could pop it in a MetroPCS or unlocked GSM phone and it should have the phone number (Settings -> About device -> Status). Call/text the number (from another phone, obviously).

Phone rebooting

I have been using the Samsung galaxy note 4 for the best part of 10 months with no major issues, except the phone getting hot, most noticeably after the Lollipop update in April. From Wed 29th*July my phone has been freezing, and then immediately rebooting with no rhyme or reason; whether I’m on an important business phone call, checking business e-mails, using a messenger app, browsing the internet, or even if the phone is just sitting there untouched. On several occasions it will just appear to shut off or get stuck on the Samsung logo screen and the only way to rectify this is to pull the battery out. What’s worse is, the phone gets really hot during these reboots, and upon restart, the battery drains by 5-10%. In fact, the phone can get so hot that it is actually uncomfortable to place it in my pocket. And that’s just because of the reboots, and not general usage. Simply put, the phone is no longer fit for purpose.
The fault first appeared on 29th*July 2015. The phone just randomly restarted whilst I was using a messaging app. Then, during one of the several random reboots that occurred hereafter until Tuesday 4th August (the day I went to get my phone repaired), I got the message, “Downloading. Do not turn off target!!!”
The phone was stuck on this screen for 5 minutes, so I had to take the battery out to get it working again.
On another occasion I got a more sinister message, “Kernel panic upload mode” which really concerned me so I rang the nearest authorised Samsung repair centre – Fleet Mobile in New Eltham. However, after having a word with them, they said they don’t fix the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
So my next port of call was the CRC Samsung Repair Centre in Surrey Quays. I spoke to them on the phone on Friday 31st*July, and explained my problem of constant rebooting and the inexplicable messages in as explained above, so they suggested I pay them a visit.
On Tues 4th*Aug 2015, I visited the CRC Samsung repair centre, and I told the assistant about the issue and the messages I received as per above. The assistant said he had never come across such a message before, so he went to ask the technician. He came back and said the technician too had never come across this message on an Android device, and that it was “only specific to iOS products”. So I asked if I could speak to the technician myself and tell him that I had seen this message on rebooting, but I was told by the assistant that the technician was too busy to have a word with me. He also said that the technician had been dealing in Android software for many years and had never seen this message appear. I wanted to tell the technician that this was not just specific to Apple products because I had witnessed it with my very own eyes.
So the assistant flashed the phone at the store and told me that it was taking a long time to boot. I was told they would have to keep it for 2 days. I asked what likely work would be carried out and his answer was, “that is something the technician would have to decide.”**So I asked him what his thoughts were, and he said it’s more than likely that it’s a hardware issue and that the motherboard (PBA) would be replaced free of charge.
Whilst at the repair centre on the day of collection (6th*Aug), I noticed that my Android version was 4.4.4, but my phone had 5.0.1 installed when I gave it in. At this point, the warranty was still intact. I gave the phone back to the assistant to update my phone to 5.0.1, and questioned him as to why this had happened. His reply was that even though the IMEI number of the phone had been transferred to the new motherboard, they forgot to update the software. I was obviously very suspect at this moment, because it showed poor workmanship and neglect.
On returning home that evening, the same reboot procedure happened again a couple of times, and my heart just sank because I truly thought that my phone would be fixed. During one of the reboots, I got the message, “"Kernel is not seandroid enforcing. Set warranty bit: kernel". I was hugely alarmed by this message and rang the service centre on Friday 7thAug, informing them of this. They suggested I bring the phone back in for repair.
The phone continued to get hot, freeze and continuously reboot multiple times last night. I ordered another battery from Amazon (total cost, £12.00) to see if it would help the situation. The following morning the phone was off even though it still had 50% battery the last night. I tried turning it on but it just wouldn’t switch on. I plugged the charger in and still it wouldn’t switch on. The new battery arrived today so I inserted that. To my amazement, the phone did not start up. I am now left with a completely unusable phone.*
Now Samsung are saying that due to these error messages, the Knox warranty has been tripped, so the warranty is void. They're suggesting that the phone has been rooted by myself by installing some unauthorised software. I've argued with them saying i have never even thought of rooting my phone because i wouldn't want to void the remaining 14 months warranty that is left on the phone. They have said i may have unintentionally installed some app that has caused the phone to be rooted. I only download apps from the Google play store. I even rang Google I up amd they verified that i had not installed any illegitimate apps.
My question is, can an app root a phone?? If so, how?
Does anyone know what caused the random reboots and the error messages described above. To me it sounds like a fatal hardware issue but Samsung are pretty sure it's software related. The problem i face now is that Samsung refuse to fix the phone for free because the warranty has been void, which i don't buy.
I'm wondering if they installed an old motherboard which may have been rooted, but they are adamant that they only replace with new motherboards.
Someone please help me out here. I am not willing to pay a single penny to get it fixed because I strongly stand by the fact that I have not rooted the phone and hence voided the warranty. Samsung Knox is a flawed security software.

Wi-Fi automatically turns off

Has anyone else experienced issues with wifi turning itself off? It seems to do so at random times throughout the day, sometimes even 30 seconds after turning it on, while my daughter it's watching YouTube, or while I'm surfing the internet.
I have been using automagic to turn it back on, but it's annoying when I'm on the internet and a page fails to load since the wifi suddenly disconnected itself.
I have disabled all the T-Mobile settings under diagnostics, and enable wifi while the screen is off, but it didn't fix the issue. I have factory reset the device, and even on setup it disabled itself 3 times while trying to setup. I don't use data, so I stick with wifi for receiving emails, which is why I want it always on.
Anyone else? If it's normal for this phone, I'll just suck it up and deal with it, otherwise I'll send it off to LG, but wanted to check with folks here, first.
I ended up contacting LG and shipped the phone to them this afternoon.
me too
Mine does this too and is also a T Mobile variant. Was hoping someone here would have a solution. I bought mine used, so no point in trying to send it back to LG though. Did you by chance download the MM update? Wondering if there's something T mobileish that doesn't play well, but I doubt it.
Just a thought..make sure there aren't any of the options turned on under "Smart Settings" in the settings menu. Some of the options turn off/on Wifi when you are in a specific location.

I did take the MM update. Unfortunately I've sent the phone in to LG two times for this issue, and they still haven't fixed it. Just got the phone back today, and sure enough, the wifi turns off after a few minutes. It even turns itself off a few times when going through the activation process. I'm pretty sure this is the last time I will by an LG phone.
I just called LG to request another shipping label. He asked the obligatory, "have you pulled the battery and put it back in, factory reset the device, or anything else that has nothing to do with your issue?". I just don't understand why they have no quality control. The first time they replaced the camera and said it fixed the wifi issues. The second time they did replace the bluetooth and wifi module, but again, they didn't even check to see if it was resolved.
I asked the LG rep how to get the issue resolved, and he said I'll have to ship it back to them. What good it will do to ship it out a third time, I don't know. This is getting really irritating.

Thanks for the idea, but nothing turned on there.
Turns out that if I take my sim card out (Lycamobile, a MVNO running on T-Mobile's network), I don't have trouble with the wifi turning off, at least not yet after 6 hours. I'll try putting my sim card back in and see if the issue comes back, then try an unactivated T-Mobile sim card.
I'm guessing LG could never repro the issue.
Didn't matter which sim card I used, the wifi would turn itself off. Since it didn't seem to happen when no sim card was present, it makes me wonder if it was software related. I couldn't find anything, and nuked all the permissions to the T-Mobile apps, but it was still broken.
Off to LG for the third time. The normal LG customer service says they only do ground shipping for repairs, but the supervisor was able to get me an overnight label when I asked for faster shipping, so that helps. I also asked for a new (or refurbished) phone, but he said that was up to the repair technician.
Just got the phone back today. LG can't fix the device, yet they refuse to replace it. I've sent it in 3 times, and the issue is still not resolved. Turn on wifi, find and start to download an app, and it says no connection. Look, and the wifi is back off. Or YouTube. Or browsing the internet. Or doing nothing at all. Just turns itself off.
I get the phone back for a day, and immediately send it back in. Supervisors are useless - the only thing they can do is get you overnight shipping instead of ground. But the repair facility won't acknowledge it for two days after it arrives when it's overnight shipping.
Sick and tired of LG. LG says there is nothing they can do if the repair facility deems that it's fixable. They won't send a new or refurbished phone. The only course of action I have, per two supervisors, is to send it back in, and there is no other way. And the repair facility doesn't test to make sure their fix actually addresses the problem. No quality checks whatsoever. What a worthless company.
Sent back a fourth time, and just received it back after waiting another two weeks. Each technician just replaces the wifi/Bluetooth module but doesn't bother checking to see if the issue is fixed, which it's not. What's worse, is this time it looks like the phone has been dropped. I sent an almost brand-new phone to them (no scratches or blemishes), and now the metal bezel on one of the sides is all scratched up.
Waiting for a call back from yet another supervisor. My BBB complaint just has a response saying, we see that it was shipped back to you. They didn't even read the claim. Typical LG. I guess it's from corporate all the way down the chain. But if your superiors don't care, why would the underlings?
No more LG phones for me after this. These games are ridiculous, and it keeps getting worse (now my phone is all scratched up).
Received the phone back after the 5th "repair". Same issue with the WiFi, and the scratches on the bezel weren't addressed. BBB case was closed automatically after a week, despite them saying I had 10 days to respond.
I had thought about rooting and uninstalling the T-Mobile bloat before sending it to them for the third time, but figured I'd give LG another chance. I should have just done it, as removing all T-Mobile apps fixed the issue. Merely nuking the permissions from the apps had not previously done the trick.
Now I just have a scratched up phone, which I think I'll just live with rather than risk LG messing up something else, not to mention that rooting voids the warranty.

Galaxy S9+ won't turn on, KILL SWITCH, fuse blown, is there a fix?

Hi, I have bought 2 used phones from a seller and 1 of them was a S9+ with good display but motherboard doesn't turn on. The seller told me that he stopped paying for the contract after he had an argument with the operator so the operator kill switched the phone the next day as punishment and they let him keep the phone as is (dead). Since they did that, the phone no longer turns on but strangely if I check the IMEI online its NOT blacklisted. So indeed they just kill switched it remotely for abruptly ending the payment with the operator.
Now my question is, is there a way to make it turn on? I suspect that the kill switch blew a fuse on the motherboard or something similar. Does anyone have any idea where that fuse might be? It would be awesome if I could make it turn on again, after all the IMEI is NOT blacklisted and everything should work fine if I could fix it.
i dont believe that carriers have a self destruct built into their phones. Not an engineer nor do i work for samsung, so i cant say with absolute certainty, but highly unlikely otherwise there would be a ton of nuked devices out there and we would have known about it by now

Well this is what the seller told me, I don't think he has a single reason to lie about it, when he sent me the parcel with the phones, he even included the contract he had with the operator and the phone was still in warranty but he couldn't go to warranty because of the situation, lol, this can't be just a coincidence. He said that the next day or so they kill switched his phone. Actually there is such a function and its well known, you can google it out "smartphone kill switch" or "samsung kill switch".
What I need to know is how do I make it work again, is there someone with hardware knowledge here? This is definitely hardware, software has nothing to do with this kill switch. I am willing to BET 20 Euros with anyone that the kill switch is a tiny SMD fuse somewhere which either needs to be replaced or removed, but how would I know which one, Im not an expert. Does anyone have a schematic of this? The model is G965F

You're thinking about this fuse that gets blown when you mess with software (rooting). Phone will still work. It's only there for insurance claims, not to kill a phone.
Sounds to me he lied. He either bricked it or it's water damaged.

Ok maybe he lied... the board shows no signs of water damage at all so I'm guessing the other option remaining is fuse blown during rooting. So what do I do to make it turn on?

Can you get to the recovery or bootloader?
Hold power/bixby/volume down buttons for a few seconds. Would bring up a bluish screen. From there you can install an os, just make sure you grab the right model number, and always the newest one from sammobile.
If you can't get that screen to pop up, it's bricked as you wouldn't be able to install the os

Don't forget to power the device off if you can get to that screen. You don't want to burn the image in. Have it plugged in the wall outlet just for safe measure just in case there is no juice in the battery

ill take that bet. There is no fuse, the only thing these phones can do is remote shut down and FRP lock it. Nothing physically happens to the phone. Even in the articles that called it a "kill switch" in a bout to try to get clicks with a more serious sounding ability than it actually has. Go to any of the tons of teardowns online of the phones and youll see that they mention it nowhere.
https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2017/08/turn-on-your-phones-kill-switch-so-its-useless-if-stolen/
this "kill switch" proverbial, not literal.
in reply to creep138, nope there is no reaction from the board with either combinations: bixby + volume up + power nor bixby + volume down + power. Nothing.... so I'm guessing its irreparable? I've called the seller and asked him a few more questions and told him what you guys told me and here's what he told me: He said that he never dropped the phone down and nor did the phone ever had any contact with water. He said that the phone is 100% kill switched without any buts and ifs. He said that this didn't happen just to him but to his friends as well. He said that he was working in a foreign country and he and his friends went to a operator and all bought expensive phones then a few months later they had to return home so they left that country without finishing the payments with the operators in that foreign country (France). He even told me where this happened. Then he said that the operators called them regarding the payments and services and they all argued with them saying that they won't pay anymore. The next day, everybody's phones were dead. None turn on anymore. So what he says must be true, I don't see why he would lie about it and basically admit to what is somewhat theft or maybe scam?
So there is a physical kill switch which we don't know about. Or maybe he's all lying and making stuff up. I don't know, I don't know him, hes a stranger to me so he could be lying. I've already tested the screen with another board and it works perfectly but his board, I'm so upset I can't fix it. After all its a S9+ board, not a S2 board, so of course I care about it. Well if there's no fix then whatever, thank you everyone for trying though. I don't know if it matters or not but the phone I received from him was already opened up, the battery cover wasn't glued properly. So he must have visited a gsm service before deciding to sell it and even they couldn't fix it.
I don't know about you guys but I tend to believe him that the phone was kill switched by the operator.
