How long does it take you to do a nandroid backup with boot, system, data, and wimax (if cwm does wimax for view)?
I'm asking so I can compare to the twrp port I'm working on.
Thanks.
The only option i have is backup. It takes 2-3 minutes to complete on my View.

Wow! On twrp it takes about 4 minutes (so far) to backup just the data partition.
So far my tests put system @ 872 MB, data @ 426 MB, boot @ 4 MB, wimax @ 23 MB. Total to backup all is around 8 to 10 minutes.
The port is almost done though. I had to scrap the amon port because it was too much work just to get emmc support added to an mtd based recovery.
Thanks for the feedback.
This is really great news TWRP is a great recovery. I love it on the 3d, great work on porting.
I will definitely give it a try.
View owners...the port is working about 99.9%.
I'm leaving that little .1% because it's working according to my tests and usage.
I just completed a backup and restore. Backup time came in at around 9.03 minutes for 1334MB (boot, data, system) and restore came in at around 5.62 minutes (data, system).
If I get some info that I need from the twrp devs I could be releasing this weekend. Just a wait-n-see thing now.
Nice work. Let us know, I'm definitely down for some testing. The current version of CWM has some weird issues.
The more I use it the more I'm starting to like it.
It definitely has some upsides compared to amon and cwm.
Hopefully this weekend will see the release though which is what I'm shooting for.
Thanks for the time and effort you put into it. Keep us posted on it.

Here's a teaser preview: Keep in mind my goal for this port was function over beauty. It doesn't show the battery level in recovery but that can change after the release.

I have backed up the wimax partition with this recovery....however I already had a wimax.img backup prior to starting this port.
As for restoring...I haven't tested restoring wimax yet because honestly my wimax still works.

Since you are familiar with twrp on the 3d (and I'm assuming it's from the twrp team meaning it would be unchanged from the source) you will more than likely notice some of the changes I added to the port.
Ok people.
Once I get all my files uploaded to github and get everything straightened out and in their place I will be releasing the recovery image for the express (view) owners.
My weekend racing went longer than anticipated and pushed back my intentions of releasing over the weekend.
Thanks for the work you put into this. Looking forward to trying it out.
HTC Express Recovery
I flashed it and ran a recovery with it this morning. Total time to backup all partitions except the ext was 5 minutes. Timewise it is pretty close to the backups I did with cwm. Size of the backup is very similar as well. Great job on this port. It gives a choice on recovery methods. I think the time difference between my backup and yours has to do with differences in the size of the partitions and the sdcards. I have a pretty stripped down rom and I am backing up to a microsd card that has given me good speeds consistently. Your work is much appreciated.

ok i have had my phone since the first week it came out and its completly stock i was wondering why would i root it what do i get besides free tethering? i had a htc evo and when i rooted it nothing changed so i was wondering whats the purpose. just to say its rooted? anyway i was thinking i should go ahead and do it. lol whats the best up to date way to do it?
which hboot do you get?
http://thenextweb.com/mobile/2010/05/07/5-reasons-root-android/
idk it was a long time ago. but i think ima go ahead and root it. whats the newest way out right now?
To choose my own prl, to control my roaming, to remove ciq and other logging, overclock and undervolt.
The best reasons to root haven't happened yet. (CM7, CM9, ICS). However, it is worth rooting just for ad blocking and tethering.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I like the idea of taking total control of my device. Rooting allows me to utilize everything possible that my phone is capable of. For some reason when these devices are taken out of the box they are limited for one reason or another by htc or sprint. Rooting alleviates that by allowing you to download and flash custom roms and kernels made by incredible developers that do it all for free. Their hard work is appreciated by all in the xda community. They aren't just themeing these phones but they are tweaking them to improve performance, battery life, and overall usability. So I recommend rooting for sure and take advantage of all this xda forum has to offer and flash a custom rom. I recommend trying more than just one. And if you find one that fits your needs, you can always donate to the dev to show your appreciation.
So you can become obsessed with flashing ROMs every day & kernel combination left & right. Tweaking & improving & crashing it & bootloops & learning in the process.
+ all the cool kids are doing it.
Yea there are so many things you can do to personalize your phone. Right now i am overclocked and running a dual core script and the phone blazes. Rooting is a must, it is the joy of android. Unlike the iturd your phone will look different and how you want it instead of looking like everyone elses
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
Rooting doesn't change anything in the device. It just gives you, the user, "root" access, which is what Linux calls administrative access.
Its about the possibilities you have with that access. Personally I root so that I can find a ROM that gives me better battery life than stock.

All the devices I have rooted (hero, Evo 4G, Evo Shift 4G, and soon to be 3D, once TeamEvil releases their S-Off solution), I have always overclocked the phone. It just makes the phone run that much smoother.
Also, once stable ICS roms come out, I have a feeling the 3D is going to be a beast, with the OS natively supporting multiple cores. Plus, with a little overclocking....will be the cherry on top

I see ICS videos on 3d and threads. I think ICS might be fun. Htc evo4g lost. Replacement from insurance was 3d.
Question for Sprintuser - team note? You have a Note on Sprint or Tmobile?? Hmm tmobile is gsm so you probably have it on tmobile gsm unlocked? So want one.
Root != good
I don't know why to root my EVO, maybe I'm wrong but my last Android phone I rooted and haven't noticed any improvement. Accept for some apps become avaliable. I see no reason to root EVO since it doesn't need to be overclocked.

Update 1: Initial phase is complete. All parts have been downloaded to my SDcard, and I have begun sifting through them. So far 31 and 34 appear to be very similar, with block 34 having been confirmed to be the "misc" partition.
Super duper idea for the Q&A section. I had no idea they were doing that. Thanks for the link.
cool. i wonder this as well. I've gotten used to 1.5 now but downgrading would be fantastic.

The above link is to an EVO 3D GSM thread. Just curious if any of the dev's on the CDMA side of the house could test this on an EVO 3D CMDA version.
It is used to downgrade any version of GSM Hboot. Don't see why this type of exploit couldn't be done for us, but then again I'm not this type of dev.
~Jasecloud4
P.S. I understand that this is a question. However, I will be testing this tonight in various iterations, and if successful will post a full tutorial as soon as it is completed.

This can be harmful to the phone if not done correctly, the og evo had this going and some people have tries it and got bricked. Its plays around w ur block scripts and w bad/corrupted blocks can do damage. I was lucky w my og evo to be able to downgrade it but not others... Its a 50/50

this actually looks more promising than the last GSM hboot downgrade thread. A friend of mine and I were trying things - well, HE was, since he has 1.5 - like writing an old CID. All attempts failed, no bricks though But this NEW step of rewriting one of the mmc blocks *might* actually work. Hope some of the root devs give this a shot. I know one guy (my friend) who would test it. Has anybody gone into the shooter IRC chatroom yet and posted this stuff?

looking in the replies, no bricks to be seen.
If my assumption is correct, they are modifying the version in the misc partition, which is block 34 on the cdma. If I don't recall this is locked down in the cdma version after it was exploited to root the Evo shift. It's still worth a shot though.
I'm working everything right now. So far so good. Will update if successful. And will attempt to test this several times before I make it public. Give me a day...lolol

List of all the Evo 3D Partitions and their names. 31 doesn't seem to be known.
It's gotta be 34, but I haven't found a way to edit it yet without it coming up all zeros.
Both 31 and 34 are the exact same size, however, neither of them can be edited in a normal hex editor.
Ideas?
-Jasecloud4
I took a look at this and used "string /dev/block/mmcblk0p31" (and 34) and there is hardly anything in there of any use. I think that HTC is encrypting something so that we can't look at it. However, I am still on 1.40 HBOOT S-OFF'd by Revolutionary and I don't know if that makes a difference or not since the GSM method was done via the HTC Unlock Tool.
At this point, I'm not sure what else would need to be done. I mean, you may be able to pull the bootloader file from the RUU and look at it there and then push it to the phone, but I'm not sure.

You could try editing that and then pushing it back to the phone but I don't know the exact command to do so. I know you can do it with fastboot, but that is not my area of expertise lol it might be something like "fastboot flash misc hboot_1.50.0000_signedbyaa.nb0" once you hex edit it. Or maybe you can put the edited .nb0 into the original .zip and flash through the bootloader, I really don't know. Just throwing out some ideas for someone to test it

So, I've been working on getting the new version of CWM that has onscreen controls, a battery meter, and more to work on the TouchPad. So far, I've gotten it to boot, flash, and all that jazz, but the touchscreen still seems to be a WIP. Also, adb seems to be broken atm. Besides that, it seems to be working alright. I kind of want to gauge interest before I go out and fix the bugs/release a build.
Anyways, here are some pictures of the new CWM (and inadvertently me at 5 AM.. no judgements haha).

Finally, here's the battery meter
If I decide to keep going with this (hell, someone else should, too! I'm sure they could do it better, too heh), I'll start merging in some changes like USB notification and more. So..... any opinions?
larger text to fill the space ? make use of the space
i am afraid that i will make a mess of the setting by touching the screen, anyway thanks~
There's definitely interest. On the Touchpad my recovery of choice is TWRP, but since that's been discontinued and in its current state a little buggy I still use CWM. This would have the best of both worlds.
I'm going to go in the opposite direction of the other suggestion thus far and say shrink the buttons a bit, if possible.
Agreed I am certainly interested, much nicer then having to use the volume buttons....
Well, to finish this, I would have to tear apart TWRP's source hoping they have touch input in their code (the GUI code isn't public). Also, I would probably have to spend a few days bug fixing and actually fixing code instead of just commenting out stuff our device doesn't have (/datadata). It seems like it'd be a bit much, but once again, if more than 4 people say they'd want it, I'd do it haha. I'm just a CS college kid in midterms week so time is decently valuable, I guess heh.
EDIT: I felt bad because I feel like I sounded like I devalued the 4 responders; I don't and hope I didn't come off that way!
I wouldnt mind have a taste of cwm touch.
Is this the version of cwm that TWRP team helped with? (after they dropped their recovery project and started helping cwm's development).
I read they were planning to start help cwm with touch but i didnt see the implementation yet.
What do you think about using 4EXT Recovery instead?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402820
I'm definitely down for this.
CwM certainly does what it was design to do. I've been using it since I got hold of MyTouch3g and Donut. It hasn't changed. That said, it's time for a transformation. I think I read on another forum that there will be some changes to CwM soon. I don't know if you are part of that crew. Anyway, please move forward with this project.
Well I have midterns until next Monday, so I'll be busy, but if you want, I can release an alpha after testing it to see if basic functionality isn't broken? That means it'll have backup/restore, partition wipe, USB mounting, battery status, and zip installation. Anything else needed for an alpha?
Also, our touch screen drivers appear to be userland-based. To the average person, that means they're not in the kernel so I'll have to look into implementing that driver into CWM's source. Once that works, we should be golden. Also, I really want to add features like screen shut off if not touched for a minute or so. That should help with battery usage in CWM, I believe.
Thanks for the support and if you have anything to add/an idea/feature request/help, I'd love to hear it all!

+1 4ext is teh shizza
I think the aesthetics and additional functionality can follow. Getting touch to work with whatever is currently in CwM is more important.
I liked TeamWin's recovery, but since it's currently not being developed... oh well...
I have a fairly stable A0.5 and i don't plan on making any changes other than a kernel update or two. I have some time to test and give feed back.
Just a quick note (I'm currently in class and can't talk too much), but 4ext is closed source. Also, does anyone know if TWRP has been abandoned? As in, they'd probably be alright with open sourcing their GUI? Maybe? Bueller?

Titanium Backup
Titanium is cluttered and messy. Yes, it works. It works really well. It's the standard for a reason. But have fun learning how to use it staring at a pile of menus, buttons, text colors and icons. It looks like crap.

Oh my god people, this isn't about Titanium, this is about App2zip.
If you can't see that Titanium looks like crap, nothing I say will convince you.
But just as a point of comparison:

Yes, I want less information. I don't want my eyes to glaze over trying to process extraneous, useless information. And not only that, if I want the information, I want it to be displayed in a coherent, cohesive manner.
For example, what the hell are all those icons on the right? Smiley face, M symbol, check mark.
I shouldn't need a secret decoder ring from a Cracker Jack in order to use an app.
@tekhna - I appreciate the tip on the new app i just feel it's lacking features and i prefer tibu.
Edit. Your title and op says its a titanium backup replacement. Thats probably why people are making the comparison.
Update (5/23): Just to clarify, this doesn't unlock the bootloader as previously thought, it just helps ROM/kernel/recovery developers bypass it: Link Here

check out foldermount. might help with the pain of the smaller storage size. basically moves data to the external SD, but leaves a symlink on the internal so that apps, etc that point to that directory can still access the files. obviously not the same as a larger internal storage, but at least it helps.
I didn't figure it was going to take long for the phone to be rooted, and custom recoveries/roms installed. It didn't take long for the GS3 to fall to the modding community.
Once you root, NO MORE OTAS!!!!
People will read that, and still do it anyway, and well, that's on them.
This is the best news I've heard related to Verizon in a long time.

Coming from a locked DNA this is very good news to me. I can't wait to have control of my phone again.

I know exactly how you feel. I didn't expect a major HTC device like the DNA to just be a turd for development.

Sad to see you split... but I have work for you if you indeed get it soon. PM me and I can walk you through it.
Mine will be here within a couple of hours -- I'd love to have root, just so I can do a TB restore from my gnex.

oh man, i couldnt take it anymore. ingress should me how really terrible the service was.
got mine last night, ready for root... :good:
I'm going to try out stock for at least a few days. I'm coming from a DINC2 running CM7 in preparation for this. It's going to be a nice boost in every regard, I think.
The lure of root is tough to beat, though. I've only ever had HTC smartphones, so I've been used to waiting a month or two for root. This might be tough.
this is awesome. super excited!
i hear vz's s4 shipped with a root patch.

Unfortunately so, it looks like Verizon had time to upgrade to the new secure kernel (same as Sprint's latest OTA). And now we all know why they wanted to take that extra month.
