... without the official dock, using ONLY a modified usb cable?
Ive been searching and found the SG can do it using a 619kohm resistor between GND and ID pin 4 on the micro usb cable.
Has anyone tried this with the atrix? Or found out what values are needed to activate each dock mode?
Get the app "Any Cut"....just make a shortcut to the car dock app to the home screen. With Any Cut, you can create a shortcut to almost every app on the phone.
Was wondering if anyone had done it with a DIY cable using the resistor method.
Why not just get the actual dock?
It's not expensive!
I'm just saying!

Because i want to plug my phone into the usb cable and leave it in my arm rest so would be a waste to buy a whole mount to be left in my arm rest plus I dont think it would fit in there either.

I plan to just prop up my phone near my desktop with a case with a built-in kickstand. I was wondering if there was any way to change the homescreen orientation without rooting or even changing the launcher (I'm actually okay with TW 4.0). I usually go with Go Launcher, but if there's a way around it, that'd be great.
You need special dock from Samsung to put phone into docking mode. Or you can make your own jig with a special valued resistor on micro USB to force it into docking mode.

So there's no other way? That's kind of lame. I remember my phone went to horizontal mode when I was messing with it, but I didn't want it at the time. I guess it must have been a glitch.
Well, I ordered my livedock off eBay on Sunday and it arrived this morning, I'm happy to report they do just what they said it would.. I can now charge my neo at the same time as using usb devices! HDMI out to the tv, usb Wifi mouse/keyboard combo and usb thumb drive all at the same time. (with usb hub attached)
The neo sits in the dock very nicely, and is at a nice viewing angle.
As an extra unexpected bonus it also enables landscape mode on the home screen when it's plugged in.. I hadn't worked out how to do that on stock home launcher yet. So navigating with mouse is really easy, doing that with OTG cable was a pain because it wouldn't switch to landscape.. (probably a build.prop edit that enables landscape mode but havn't played with that yet)
Well worth the 29 euro for the livedock

Cool Congrats
I think it's pretty expensive. It's €35 here. If I use wifikeyboard using my laptop and connect the phone with hdmi to my tv, I have basically the same.
Yea, I even considered getting a BT keyboard but with Android total lack of BT support I thought this was a cheaper option.
at least I can connect thumb drives too and still charge.. than again, Wifi could solve that issue too.. meh... I like the dock and very happy with the way it just works. (now just have to find myself a cheap USB gamepad to try)

I want one......lol
awesome, been itching to order mine, you mentioned thumbdrive in the first post ?
does that work on stock firmware?

So, IIRC, the livedock supported HDMI through USB, so that phones without HDMI-out, such as Ray, could be used. Is this true? Can you connect your tv with HDMI from the livedock itself, or do you have to use the HDMI-out on the phone?
Thanks!

No hdmi support on livedock.. You have to plug a hdmi cable into the hdmi port on the phone..
USB thumb drives work with stock firmware but you have to install arc usb storage manager from market to enable thumb drive support on the neo.
And @ HilfordJames.. You'll get yours end of Feb when I get back to nz

Thanks for posting the pics. I really love this gadget. I am looking forward to get one.
Are you using actively powered USB hub in connection with livedock? Are you tryied to open it and look inside? I am just curious if the USB on livedock is powered only from the phone so it is really the same as USB OTG cable connected directly to phone, or there is some circuit to power it from charger if available.
I am considering to buy this gadget also, but i hope somebody add support of Bluetooth HID to the stock rom sooner, so i will not need live dock as i already have bluetooth keyboard and mouse.. Tryied to install CM7.1 because of that, but then I quickly return to the stock rom, on CM even HDMI didn't work.
Also let us know which games you will find easy to control via connected gamepad.
Havn't got my gamepad yet so can't comment on that.. Using unpowered usb hub works fine but havn't tried a powered one yet.. I'm sure it will work though.
As far as supplying power from dock for OTG, I can confirm this works, I can use the OTG usb port on the dock to charge other devices while the phone is unplugged from the dock, so power is being supplied straight to the OTG port from the live docks power supply
I've pulled the dock apart and will try to get a photo of the intricate circuit board in there, it's more than just a few cables.. And looks like an empty area for another plug or lead to solder onto.. Will try to work out what this is for too

here is a picture of the board inside the livedock..
looking at the board the micro USB only supplies power so if you power the dock off a computer (Through the docks micro usb port) it won't connect the phone to the computer for file sharing etc only charging.. not really that important but still good to know.
I attacked it with an old multimeter but its pretty primative.. I'll have to wait till I get back to NZ next month and my own test tools to figure out what the empty J12 connector is for.. (might just be a leftover test port) but if its possible to add extra usb ports it would save using a hub.. we'll see anyway.. enjoy the pic..

Dayme~! we're waiting like forever to see it coming to Malaysia
If this has landscape homescreen, we should be able to enable it in someway without the dock? Any developer who could figure out how to do that?
And if you make a call, is the "in call" screen also in landscape mode?

12-pin JTAG connector for that MCU ???
Ok so i HATE the car home launching on the dock, my X2 and OG Droid used a magnet to trigger the home but Razr uses a resistor in the usb pins. Without proper tools to rework the internal wiring i decided to completely replace the usb internals with a oem moto charger (from my X2 bundle) and hey it turned out well, and actually slides in better than before. (i had the phone in the dock plugged in when i applied the bonding agent to the back of the mount to ensure it was lined up correctly)
Want to sell the old guts?
I'd like to know how to make my phone go into dock mode without a dock.
My car has a place to sit the phone that works great but, no auto rotate.
Its junk to me, message me your address and I'll throw it in the mail in an envelope. The 43c is on me
If you haven't mailed it out, would you mind taking some full-on, hi-res pics of the components on the board? Might help those looking to simulate a dock connection without shelling out for the moto dock.
Sure I'll snap some shots of it and post them here.
Looking those pictures, I bet that's the same PCB inside the Webtop Travel Adapter. I just wonder if you could solder a USB A Male connector on the usb leads in place of the micro USB connector and then plug it into a usb hub connected to the y adapter w/power and OTG Cable and enable webtop...
Board closeups.
If you install the google car home app it will allow you to exit car mode while docked..no need to mod it.
I got the app here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081009

The problem isn't leaving the home app, its that it launches any launcher at all, it messes up things im doing example docking a paused netflix movie. Also more importantly it was causing hell with my launcher7, blanking out icons and such, even with a app that launches no car dock it still launches that app as a "home".
I get in and out of my car 20-50 times a day, i wish you could just disable the car dock in the system settings. all in all im happy with the dock now, the slider fits perfect now, before i had to wiggle it.
Why not just freeze the dock app?

How solid is the mount for if it were to be used for video capture while the car is in motion. I used to use my old HTC Incredible for OnBoard "GoPro" like video while I drive at the track. If this is solid I plan on doing the same.
Um...isn't there an app for blocking the dock app (NoDock). Requires root.
Been on vacation. Thanks for snapping the pics!
I have the opposite problem, my razr dont detect car dock, without this not working audio-by-microusb cable (original cardock cool feature). Help me, software reasons already excluded.
who may help me? may any software force _real_ car mode?
After 4 years my RAZR is finally dead (RIP) and I replaced it with another smartphone (Lenovo, but who cares)
One of the features I miss from RAZR is it beautiful car dock with charger, and the phone's ability to enter/exit car mode automatically.
So it's interesting if it's possible to try and use it, after some modification, on other phones

The question : what does the phone do for this detection ? is it pure hardware particular implementation or any phone is capable to detect this type of wiring and it's just a matter of software to do something with it?
How does that docking app start like here ?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aimhbfUtVZI
Can you start this docking app without a docking station ? Where is it ?
Just click the Clock app in your app drawer. Job done.
thanks mate, just learned something new .
But I don't get it how is it automatically launched when inserted into a docking station ?
Why isn't this app launched when the micro usb cable is inserted ?
And why doesnt it work for my zenis dock?!
That's what I want to find out, how is it launched
It looks like with the Samsung OEM docking station this app is launched automatically, touch the docking station does not need additional power supply to do this.
worked pretty good for me
worked how exactly ... in the bathroom taking shower or how ?
please explain
The proper docks have a resister in the USB connection that triggers the docked mode.
Apps like "alarm clock Plus" have a setting to launch on standard USB connection if you don't have a dock that triggers dock mode.
There are others but I can't remember the app names.

Holy crap at the prices for the original dock though :| Even on eBay they cost an arm and a leg :s
I am running CM 9.0.0-RC2-quincyatt on my Note I717.
I just received the Samsung car dock and when I place the Galaxy note in it and go into Settings -> Dock, the phone is not docked? Any tips?
Thanks
mine does the same thing. i just plug the 3.5mm cable directly into the phone instead of the dock. not perfect but does the job

That's not the problem I have... On my Nexus One when running CM9, when I put the phone in the dock, it would automatically detect the dock and went into "Docked" mode, which would automatically start the Google Car Mode app (which btw, where did that app go, I can't find in on the market?).
mine goes into car mode but not dock mode so i have no audio output when its docked. thats why i used the audio out cable directly from the phone instead of the dock. sorry if i wasnt clear earlier
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
I've had the same problem with CM9 as well. If you can find the Google Car Mode app, and install it, that will be launched when in the dock, but the audio never outputs to the dock's external jack.
Anyone tested CM10 to see if it is any different?
XDA is no longer worth my time.
