Couple weeks ago, I bought a 8gb external sd card for my vibrant. Its been working fine except for a couple of times when it wasn’t mountable for somereason. I had to restart the phone few times to get it to work. Yesterday, I turned my phone on and realized phone wasn’t recognizing external sd card. Instead I had a message in notification bar saying “Damaged external SD card. SD card is damaged. You may have to format sd card. ” I tried numerous times to take out the external sd card from the phone and putting it back in, with the phone being both turned off and turned on. I connected the phone to computer and it wasn’t readable and was only giving an option to reformat the sd card. Used a sd card adopter to try to read the card’s contents but with the same results.
I remember once I connected the phone to my pc and disconnected it without pressing the turn off sd card storage on the phone. This might have caused the problem.
What am I doing wrong? What is wrong with the sd card? Is there anyway I can retrieve my data stored on the card. How can it be fixed?
Thakns.
I was able to fix this issue with chkdsk command in dos command prompt screen from this thread . I couldn't find the answer in vibrant forum so im posting here in the hope it will help others in the future and will work as reference.
Open command prompt on your pc.
then type chkdsk followed by drive letter followed by /r - so if your card is detected as E then do: chkdsk e: /r
hit enter.
Windows will check your card and its file system along with files folders, used and unused space.
I got this issue multiple times .... I had to format the external sd multiple times but eventually it worked but the guy above seems to know what he's talking about, try what he said out and use my way as a last resort because you will lose all things stored on the sd my way
this is prime example of why i make backups of everything

This is part of the learning process, its a tough process or we could be prepared like you
Today I got the same message as before when SD card didnt work.
"Damaged external SD card. SD card is damaged. You may have to format sd card.”
I was able to fix it again using the method described above. But im wondering why does the SD card keep giving me problems. Is there anything I could do to fix it?
Micro SD card are real sensitive. If you look at them wrong they'll take a ****. Any minor static discharge on them and they will be useless. You're just gonna have to get a new one. I know it sucks but I've been through 2 of them till purchased a Samsung one that has lasted. You're just gonna have to remember to back everything up like homie vabeachfc3s says. An old man told me once "he who doesn't have at least two backups of his files is someone who doesn't care to loose them".

This worked to recover my SD on my AT&T Skyrocket. Thank you!
I believe I encountered the problem because I was trying to transfer too much data at once from my internal SD to the external SD (my entire Titanium Backup!).
This happened to me today on my Mmx A110.
Unfortunately the SD card is not mounting either by USB cable or memory card reader.
What can I do?
clude rrnothis
Same problem as me either... buy new sd
Damaged external sd card a110
I have tried chkdsk <diskname>: /r
I have tried chkdsk /X /F <diskname>:
I also cleaned and activated using diskpart
but nothing is working its still giving damaged external SD card. Any solution ???

Hi All,
I ran into a strange problem with my phone's SD card. Since a week or two, my card started complaining about "Mounted Read-Only, Tap here to fix it error". I did not pay much attention and fixed it by tapping it on the notification area.
However, from last weekend I found out that im not able to delete anything from my SD card. If i delete it deletes it, but when i unmount and re mount my SD Card, all the files that ive deleted are back again on my SD card. Also when If i copy a new file, per say, an MP3 file, it disappears after i remount the SD card.
PLEASE, could someone shed some light on this issue? I've tried unseating, reseating the card, do a full disk check on my windows laptop. Still no luck. I hvnt tried placing the card into a card adapter and plugging it into my laptops' card reader.
Can someone please suggest what should i do next? this is frustrating.
PS: my phone is rooted and ive beeing using BAMF Forever Cubed1.0.7 with MR3 radio since a month.

Backup everything on your sdcard and use a card reader to connect it to your computer and use hp format tool to format it. don't do a quick format
Hey. I bought a new _cheap_ SDHC card online, 32gb... When I put it in my phone, the phone gets pretty slow while there's a notification saying "Preparing SD card" "Checking for errors."
Now it stays there for a long while and the phone gets very hot... Is the card defect or is there something that can be done?
Have a look for H2testw
Well the problem is that i can't mount the card since i don't have a card reader...
Please forgive me for not being psychic, you didn't say that originally.
No need to be hostile man.
Anyways, i let my phone run for a few hours, still nothing...
Does anyone have any idea? The phone IS rooted, so that might have something to do with it, gonna try to unroot it today to see if that makes any difference.
this happened to once, I bought a 32 GB from amazon and it was cheap. It was a disaster, all my data I stored in it was erased spontaneously. I returned it and had a refund. My guess, the sd_card is inferior
y don u get a cardreader an check for eerors or format an c....or u can set usb debugging and do tht if dont hav card reader...some use 64gb card wiv no prblm..
You don't need a card reader to check for errors if you don't have one. Just plug your phone with the card in it into a computer and search for your card in windows explorer and check for errors there. You can also format it from there also.
I managed to check it on a card reader today, windows does recognize something is going but doesn't allow me to format it or do anything except change the drive letter basically... When i check it through computer -> manage -> disk management it shows it as a MBR? Why is that and any way to go around it?
Oh and i can't access the card while it's in my phone at all, it just keeps looking for errors and doesn't mount it?
preparing SD Card and checking for errors
I am also having the same problem, My sd card always shows the message Preparing sd card and checking for errors in galaxy fit and I have formatted it in my pc and then tried all the other methods like deleting the msdos file from system/bin etc but still the problem persists. would there be any problem with my phone of sd card slot kindly reply
Hi when i try to delete anything off my external SD card it wont delete. i also cant copy things from my internal storage to sd.
When i plug it into my PC with my USB cable and try to delete anything it says the same.
I've just plugged it in to my PC with a USB micro SD adapter and everything works fine.
Does anyone know anything about this? I'm really quite confused
Check the card for errors/run chkdsk on it. (I recommend copying your stuff first as I have had chkdsk get rid of important files [that didn't seem corrupted to me, but what do I know]. This was only once, mind.)
If you look at the mount options for the external sdcard, you'll spot this: /dev/block/vold/179:49 on /storage/extSdCard type vfat (rw,dirsync, nosuid, nodev,
noexec,noatime,nodiratime,uid=1000,gid=1023,fmask=0002,dmask=0002,allow_utime=00
20,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,utf8,errors=remount-ro).
In your case, I imagine rw is ro. If you want to verify if your card is getting remounted ro because of errors, look through the output of dmesg.
Got it sorted, thanks. chkdsk was the answer. :highfive:
How do you run chkdsk on s3
How do you run chkdsk on an S3 connected to a computer? There is no drive letter to specify.

Happens quite often on SIII, not sure of the exact reason. And its not because of the mount option changing to ro.
No you can't run it by connecting the phone to PC. Need a card reader to connect the microSD to the PC and then run chkdsk
i think this is a possible solution
settings > storage > unmount sd card (wait for it to become safe to unmount)
then press mount sd card. you dont have to take the card out of the phone.
it solved this problem in my galaxy beam just now^^
yep

Had this same problem with a Sony 64 gb microSDXC card. Fixed it by switching to MTP mode.

Thank you very much...It worked great.
I wanted to upgrade my SD card which was 8GB to a 64 GB one.
Issue was there were too many apps installed on the 8GB card hence a normal copy in windows din't do the trick, even when I did show hidden files.
The solution was to use robocopy from command line.
In this example, E: is the card.
First, put the old SD card in the card reader.
1. Open cmd (Win Key + R, then type cmd, Press Enter).
2. type "robocopy E:\ C:\MyBackupFolder /MIR"
3. Remove old card and put new SD card in the card reader.
4. type "robocopy C:\MyBackupFolder E:\ /MIR"
Done
Good to know!
Awesome Tip...
This is scary fast!
Especially when upgrading from a 64gb to 128gb card...
Thanks!
be careful
someone may be stupid enough to begin from the 4th step.
anyway , any undelete software you suggest ?
I just did this, almost everything was ok except for some apps that references the SD-card with the address "emulated/[serial NO#?]" so might want to watch that out
Hi guys im having a bit of drama with my sd card and my samsung galaxy tab a 10.1 running android 7.0 unrooted
I first noticed this yesterday as utorrent kept throwing me an error during my download, when i selected the sd card as the download location i noticed it said app data then once i changed the location to internal app data things worked fine.
I tried to delete the failed download but a little error message came up unable to delete so i formated my sd card and it asked for me to select a file to allow write function, i moved my downloads over to the sd card then continued with another download. utorrent has again failed halfway through then upon looking it has actually wiped my sd card completely nothing shows up but apparently i have used 2.8gb but theres no files.
ive been looking around and ive been seeing bits about sd write function being removed after kitkat but i cant seem to find anything about my sd card being wiped or why i cant delete files. Please could someone help me understand whats what or point me in the direction of a thread that explains all this.
thanks in advance

E.g. SanDisk forces some of their usb pen drives into a permanent read-only state when the pen drive detects that it is damaged. Once this happens, this cannot be undone. It is a mechanism to try to save the data. Perhaps your sd card is damaged and something similiar occured? It sounds like a broken/damaged sd card. If you don't need the data on the sd card, you may try to format the sd card with your pc and then again format it with your mobile device. If this fails, it is likely that the sd card is damaged.

Thanks for the reply but tbh ive been really busy getting bits sorted for my holiday i forgot to update my post, turns out its the sd reader in the tablet at fault which is a bit annoying as its the 1st time ive used it in the 8 months ive owned the tablet. Its the 2nd fault to develop with the tablet 1st fault was unresponsive touch screen tight out the box that was repaired now i need to wait until i return from my holiday to have the reader fixed, luckily an OTG and sd reader works like a charm.
