[Q] Lag/Jerk after KF3 upgrade - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First Up: Sorry if this has been covered somewhere. I have searched and didn't find something close to this.
I bought the phone in India and it had KE8 by default.
I updated the firmware using Odin to KF3 (INU).
I rooted thru the CF method. And then reflashed using stock kernel for KF3.
So now, my specs are:
Baseband Version: I9100DDKE4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL276555 root - DELL101 #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD XWKF3.
After this, I am now facing a lot of jerkiness and lag. Scrolling is not smooth at all, be it contacts, b/w application pages etc. It was absolutely smooth prior to the fw update. I tested also using angry birds, and the screen gets really jerky. Wake up screen, etc are all jerky.
Just feels like there is some process running in the background eating up memory, and thus causing the screen to behave this way.
Please help me out.
(If the solution is a factory reset, I know I will lose root, but will it revert to KE8?)

Who said Factory Reset will un root the device? So do it and see if the problem solves or not. I am using KF3 for more than a month now and it is a very stable and speedy firmware. And no, Factory Reset will not downgrade it to KE8, it will be KF3 after the reset.
Regards.

Thanks mate.
I see you have the same stats as I do. Vodafone Kolkata FTW !!
So just to be clear, I will not lose root, neither will the firmware get downgraded. It will only suffer from a wipe. Please do suggest a good backup method, or point me in the right direction.
Another thing, did you update using Kies or Odin? And what root mechanism did you follow?

Nope, neither.
I updated via Kies. I don't have that many apps installed and didn't need a back up for them, so I used Kies back up.
I used Chainfire root mechanism, which you can find under Original Android Dev section.
Besides, glad to know you are from Kolkata too.
Regards.

Okay so I did a factory reset. Solved the problem completely. No lag/jerk any more. YAYYYY!!!
Used Titanium backup (free) for the backup. It backsup the apps to the internal memory, and the hard reset doesn't wipe the internal memory. The only pain in the free version is restoration while still a batch process, requires you to individually say yes to each app being restored.
So now I have a rooted SGS2 with KF3, and no lag!!
Time to check out some custom roms

[Q] Firmware for Australian Optus branded SGS2?

I don't have enough posts up to ask in the development section, the details out of KIES for this phone are:
Baseband version: I9100XXKDJ
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE2-CL187606
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XWKE2
Current firmware version: PDA - KE2, Phone - KDJ, CSC - KE3 (OPS)
Is there an XWKE7 with CSC we can flash without losing apn details etc?
Thanks
I am even looking for the current firmware (XKE2) to be available just as a backup.
I don't XKE7 will be coming out soon as there are carriers around the world who still havent released their XKE7 versions yet.
I have tried the above information on fusdownloader and still said no firmware information available.
I guess the update will only be available in Samsung server once XKE7 Optus version is actually released.
The firmware for opiss is not available on the server at present.

Is that the type of thing they are ever likely to supply? or do we need to wait for an updated optus firmware to be available to be able to flash to stock optus via ODIN?
I am flashing a mates to KE7 tonight, like I did with mine, but this time I am applying cf-root first, doing a nandroid backup of completely stock optus KE2+root and doing a backup of all optus crap .apk's just incase I want to add some of them to clean KE7 in the future.
If I had a warranty covered issue and did a nandroid restore back to optus KE2 firmware, would there be a way to remove root and cover my tracks so to speak?
Or even better, a way to back up the optus firmware without root?
Can we freeze or uninstall all the optus bloatware that came with our phone?
Alexei,
Glad that you eventually made the backup.
Ever since I made that post about nandroid backup in Whirlpool, ive been waiting for someone to make one as well as i lost my backup.
Do you mind sharing a copy of that nandroid (if it doesnt contain personal info)?

Yes you can freeze the bloat that comes with the phone.

This is what I did to create backups and unroot it...
Creating Optus Backup:
1. Go to Download Mode and Install CF-Root KE2 Root using Odin
This will install Clockwork Recovery for you.
2. Phone will reboot with root already (no need for SOC)
3. Run CWM Manager (from app tray)
4. Choose Backup
You will then have a nandroid backup located in the internal SD (\clockworkmod\). However, the backup will contain CWM and Root. But that's okay. Read on to find more about restoring to a clean Optus ROM.
To Restore to Clean Optus ROM:
1. Go to Download Mode and Install a stock unbranded ROM (KE7 or KE2) using Odin
2. Go to Download Mode and Install CF-Root KE7 or KE2
3. Run CWM Manager and restore Optus backup (phone will reboot)
4. Install Root Explorer (download from Market or keep a copy handy in internal SD)
5. Remove CWM Manager from \system\app
6. Go to Download Mode and install Odia KE2 Insecure
7. Run Superoneclick to ROOT (you can usually skip this step and go to step 8)
8. Run Superoneclick to Unroot (if step 8 fails, do step 7 first)
9. Install stock KE2 Kernel from XDA
You will have an unrooted Optus ROM but still contains your data.
10. Do a Factory Reset from OS or from Recovery (Power + Vol UP + Home)
You will have a clean Optus ROM but you also need to format your internal SD as well.
Also, in addition to that, you may need to use that thing-a-ma-JIG from eBay to reset the download counter. I personally haven't tried resetting it as it hasnt arrived yet.
I was going to upload a relatively clean nandroid copy of Optus ROM but... while I was factory resetting after going back to KE7 stock, I accidentally formatted the internal SD... <damn!>
So, if anyone is willing to share their nandroid backup of Optus ROM, please let us know so we can possibly upload it somewhere. This is also useful to extract Optus My Account app because its 1.2 (compared to the one in Galaxy S which was 1.0).
Please let me know if the above trick doesn't completely remove root.

Optus Zoo, Optus Now, Optus navigation, MyAccount and some other junky stuff.
I checked my battery stats and saw that Optus Now had used 30% of the battery, equal to Android OS. Unacceptable, considering I didn't even open or use it.
So i made a backup of My Account as that was the only useful Optus app and then upgraded to XWKE7 / stock kernel with root and completely debranded.
After freezing some of the samsung apps as well i'm very happy. Hopefully I have no warranty issues before we get a clean Optus rom from someone.
@4iedemon your process looks good, if i'd known i would have backed up the entire ROM instead of only MyAccount. Hopefully something pops up soon or a fellow Optus user can get a clean rom.

I would gladly, except he started experiencing issues with his, and wants to be sure he's not going to have to do a warranty job before he roots it.. so no backup to give unfortunately.

I used this thread:
[30.05.2011][CF-Root v3.5] KE2/7 - su+bb+CWM3 to install the KE2 root, from there i installed TitaniumBackup and took a backup of MyAccount (probably should have used CWM to do a full ROM backup as 4iedemon suggested in post #8 of this thread).
Then i used this thread: [ROM + Guide]Official i9100 KDD/KE1/KE2/KE7 download for Odin Flash and Root Guide and installed the XWKE7 Generic XEU firmware & stock kernel. Then went back to the first thread and repeated the root for KE7 and restored MyAccount from Titanium Backup.
I've had a HTC Hero for 1.5 years and root/flash was a sinch, boy do Samsung make things complicated. (I've only ever needed to post to XDA once i got the SGS2).
Thanks @mrxd
The backup worked and I tried my backup to return to stock Optus nandroid (+flashing stock XKE2 kernel) and removed root access. I was so happy to finally found a way to backup my Optus rom and upgraded straight away to unbranded XKE7.
However, after upgrading, I meant to format the external SD I got from my Motorola Milestone but I actually chose format Internal SD Card instead so it deleted the \clockworkmod folder that had my backup in it haha.
Lets hope someone else read this before they flash something over their Optus ROM. But most likely those who actually visited this ROM are the ones who already lost their Optus ROM.
Btw, can you share that My Account APK? The one I got from Galaxy S was 1.0 whereas the one from S2 was 1.2.

NEVERMIND... the old My Account apk from Galaxy S was better as it didn't have ads.
Hey guys new to the website.
been lurking for a while; just picked up a galaxy S II from optus. Now I have tried searching the forum but I haven't found an other thread and considering you guys have optus phones, interested to know whether or not you guys have the same issue as myself.
Love the phone, but basically whenever I go into an application; everything runs great but when i press the 'home' button to go back or even the back arrow, it takes the phone about 4 seconds to respond, seems quite slow. Everything else runs quite fast.
Is this due to the optus 'bloatware'? Or is this something that is just normal for the phone?
Cheers for any responses guys.

Indeed. I haven't installed Adfree yet and doubt that will get rid of it. Seems to just be an ad for Optus Zoo.

Sounds odd, is this for all apps? menus? The only kind of delay I'd get would be due to wifi or 3g i.e. if i was in the browser and hit the back arrow and the app would have to hit the network again. Otherwise everything is super quick.
I have to admit that I got rid of TouchWiz pretty quickly and installed LauncherPro. The optus bloatware didn't seem to affect CPU / lag, it was more of a battery resource hogger for me.

Sounds like you have some app (or widget) installed that's constantly running in the background and generally misbehaving? I suggest getting AutoKiller (if you're rooted) to check out what processes/services are running in the background.
For example, just got rid of Big Time Gangsta off my phone after I found the stupid game was running a auto-launching battery-hogging service even when I'd quit the app.
Hi Guys,
New here and have been trying to find a way to get the original optus ROM out of my phone before I flash the rom to KE7. First time on Android for me so its all new. I can provide a clean Optus rom for everyone, but need to know how to get it out without voiding the warranty?
Read the android stuff but something about the counter changin has got me worried, does that mean they are able to track that you have flashed your rom before?
Cheers!
You can get a jig from ebay, lets you reset the counter. If your on whirlpool, send me a whirm and ill send you an ebay link. Same user name.

[Q] Trouble upgrading from GB to ICS

Hello all XDA users,
Many apologies for the noobish questions, I am new to this forum and this is my first time posting. Although a first time smartphone owner, I decided to be brave and attempt to root and flash my phone, which worked fine under Gingerbread until I wanted to upgrade to ICS. I have a International GT-I9100 SGS2 purchased in Singapore. I rooted it by installing a custom kernel and flashed a new Lite'ning Rom V3.2 with Gingerbread.
In order to upgrade to ICS, I tried through KIES and the "Software Update" function to no avail. I then tried to do so manually but Odin would not complete the process with the original I9100XWLP3 rom I downloaded on this site. I left it running on my computer for 2 hours only to come back home with the progress incomplete.
My questions are:
1) I live in Taiwan now. My other friends who purchased their SGS2 locally here all have gotten ICS through KIES. Am I unable to do this because I purchased it from Singapore and must wait for the Singapore rom to be uploaded? Is there no way for me to flash to the local Taiwanese I9100ZSLPE rom?
2) How long does an ODIN flash take to complete? Should I be more patient and waited longer than 2 hours for it to finish?
3) Does KIES no longer recognize my phone because I rooted it? It always fails to download the driver whenever I plug in my phone. Do I need to unroot to an official ROM such as I9100XWLP3, and then download through KIES to get ICS, or is I9100XWLP3 already packed with ICS?
Again, many apologies if these questions are elementary in nature, and thanks in advance for the help. Attached you will find a picture of my phone's current firmware state.
[1) you must be on a stock rom as your friends had, since you have rooted and installed a custem rom, keis will not recognize your phone. you can flash it from ODIN also, if you really need official update from Kies, you want to flash the same stock ROM your friends had in their mobile at your region...
2) Maximum 5 minit, something wrong with your connection, it is strange finally you got installed after 2 hours waiting...
3) same answer as #1, + you dont need to unroot, mere rooting will not effect Keis update, XWLP3 is an ICS rom
Should I perform a full wipe before upgrading my rom?
Thanks for your response, all the way from Kuwait. I backed up most of my files via Titanium backup. Should I now perform a factory reset before upgrading to ICS? Wouldn't the factory reset also wipe out my Titanium backup, or is this somehow protected? Do I need to transport my backup to my pc first? I tried to backup via kies, but the driver issue prevented my phone from being recognized.

on which firmware are you currently?
it is always good idea to transport to PC your back-up, even wiping and factory reset will not touch your own stuffs on SD card, also while you are flashing a ROM from ODIN and CWM.
also take care when you restore your backup from tintanium, uncheck all the system data, it will mess up your phone, if you had made the backup from a GB Rom, install only user applications.
Your backed up data will be on the SD card a folder named Titanium backup, you only need to download the application titanium backup from market, after rooting your phone.
Edit : sorry I did not notice your picture uploaded, that means your attempt on ODIN did not do anythig and luckly it did not hurt phone too, I think your PC connection or driver is not proper....google more about usage of ODIN....

Can I upgrade to Stock ICS directly from 2.3.4?

Hello - I didn't like the updates I heard about in the factory 2.3.6 ROM update, so I skipped it. And, I'm rooted.
So, a few questions:
Can I upgrade directly from 2.3.4 to ICS from a rooted phone? Or do I need to step-up to 2.3.6 first?
Do I need to actually unroot before I do any of this?
Can I re-root once I go ICS?
I've heard that the best bet is to do a factory reset after upgrading to ICS. If I do this, is the best bet to do a Titanium Backup app & data backup/restore process? Are there any better solutions to capture all my data that I'd lose with a reset?
Any info/insights greatly appreciated. Note: I have searched far and wide on XDA for answers to these questions, but I could not find any direct answers that made me feel confident enough to move forward. So, any direct response appreciated.
Thx.

1. yes, you can upgrade straight from 2.3.4 I've done it.
2. you don't need to unroot before - the upgrade will unroot you.
3. your best bet is NOT TO FACTORY RESET AFTER UPGRADE - IT COULD BRICK YOU BECAUSE OF A KNOWN BUG IN FACTORY KERNEL
4. If you want rooted version of upgrade look for the odin.heimdall version the Creepyncrawly put in the development section.
or you could try Semi UCLE5 that i have linked in the signature. It looks like the stock upgrade but it is smoother, among other things.
Good luck!
Jon first of all, you can always upgrade to any new update regardless of your Android version so it's a Yes to your first question. Secondly, whenever you update to a stock ROM your device gets unrooted itself so you'll have to root it again.

Jack Man & uetfreak - thanks! Great feedback.
A couple follow-on questions for Jack Man:
I've read about the kernel bug, but THANK YOU for reminding me that it would affect a simple factory reset. Yeesh, that's a pretty serious bug when a standard reset could brick a phone. So, one remedy, as you say, is to go with UCLE5. Smoother sounds ideal to me (I've heard that ICS on GS2 is a bit jittery on the homescreens, which totally stinks). But if I go with OCLE5, that's a custom ROM so that means I'll lose the ability to do the OEM upgrade to keep all my apps & data intact, correct?
If that's correct, what's the best way to ensure all my settings, contacts, apps, data can be easily restored on a wiped phone? I have Titanium Backup + Root. I assume I'd keep root with OCLE5? And would I just run a TB restore on apps & data (and not system settings)? Are there any system settings I can backup/restore safely between ROMs/OS versions?
I've never flashed a custom ROM so I don't know how y'all keep all your stuff intact as you switch around!
Thx.

Well, first, since you have never flashed a custom rom I would suggest reading until you're sick of reading before flashing. It will pay off in the long run. Regarding flashing from 2.3.4 up to Custom UCLE5 and keeping all of your apps and contacts - I'm not sure how that would go, honestly. For me, my contacts and calendar are saved on my computer through MSOutlook and I sync them with MyPhoneExplorer without any problems. Most of the apps I use (which is not a lot at all) I don't bother backing up when I flash roms and wipe data clean. I have backed up some in the past with Titanium Backup (pro version is worth it), but only if I know absolutely that I need the data from them. Otherwise, I have just done fresh installs of apps because I have read so much about people having ROM issues from restoring apps with titanium.
About losing the ability to do the OEM upgrade - If you ever want to you can, it'll just take time, and yes, you would have to wipe data anyway to go back to 2.3.4 then use KIES. Kind of a pain if you ask me. Plus, ask anyone here on custom stuff - once you go with a custom ROM, you won't want to go back to stock - EVER.
Hope this helps. feel free to pm me if you need. I'll be on the road for the next few days. remember - READ as much as you can. start with the "stickies" in the top of the main thread with a little pin on the left.
p.s. one more thing. Get yourself a usb jig. it's only a few buck online. once you start flashing roms you may want to try other ones. If you make a mistake somewhere, a jig can get you out of a jam quick.

Good idea. I do resets if I come from gingerbread too. But I know with this ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650948) you have to make sure you have the kernel that is based off of the stock kernel - AJ's kernel to safely factory reset. I think you will get a boot loop if you factory reset with the Siyah installed. I could be wrong, but I remember getting a boot loop on mine when I had siyah installed. Maybe it was because i did a reset from settings/back up and reset/factory reset and then formatted the sd card (since I had so much useless crap on there, luckily backed up on my pc).

You're kidding right? No do not tell him to factory reset with the stock kernel. If his phone has the big he could burn out his emmc chip. Then he would need to pay mobile tech videos to jtag it.

you have to flash iOS on your phone first before you can upgrade to cupcake, immediately update to donut before rebooting, then you have to go through eclair, froyo, and you will find yourself at gingerbread. DO NOT REBOOT AFTER FLASHING GINGERBREAD!! you have to flash ICS during the shutdown process....if you miss your cue, you will have to start all over

[Q] Flashing 4.1.2 leaked jb - various questions

Current setup - stock - 4.0.4 - I have not made any modifications to this phone so far other than upgrading it from GB OTA. It is the standard unlocked SIM free UK/Irelend edition.
PDA: I9100XWLPT
PHONE: I9100XXLQ6
CSC: I9100XEULPA
I am interested in trying the stock leaked version of 4.1.2 - actually I'm fed up with waiting for the official release which always seems to be "coming in the very near future" but never arrives.
I have read around extensively on this site and others about how to do this, but still have some questions that I would be grateful if someone could answer.
1. Brick bug - I have run eMMC check and it reports that it reports: NO. Sane chip. Does this mean that I have nothing to fear regarding factory resets/data wiping on 4.0.4?
2. Some mention that USB debugging should be checked - others make not mention of it at all. Should USB debugging be checked in this case when going up to 4.1.2 or back down to 4.0.4?
3. Should the SIM card be removed before flashing with odin or is it alright to leave it in?
4. When the phone reboots after flashing 4.1.2 with odin, some tutorials do nothing and let the phone reboot - others suggest removing the battery as it begins to reboot and then booting into stock recovery mode and doing a factory reset, wipe cache. Some even say also wipe dalvik cache. Is this battery removal step necessary? Or should the phone be left to attempt to boot and if the process hangs enter recovery and reset/wipe cache?
5. I have read in a couple of cases that the SIM lock has been activated after this flashing procedure on a previously unlocked phone. I have found an unlock apk on this forum that can resolve this issue. But why does it happen? How common is this problem?
6. In my 4.1.2 download from Sammobile there are 2 files that are not mentioned in the articles I have read. emmc_EXT4_16GB.pit and emmc_EXT4_32GB.pit - what are these for? Are they needed for this procedure?
7. How long should the reboot process take after the flashing is complete? - or after how long should I start to get worried if it seems to be stuck?
8. If I wish to return to stock 4.0.4 (here the brick bug is the problem yes?)- is the procedure the same as flashing 4.1.2? And if I do go back to 4.0.4 stock will the phone work with KIES again?
9. I have odin 3.07 - is this version appropriate for this procedure?

1. Brick bug - I have run eMMC check and it reports that it reports: NO. Sane chip. Does this mean that I have nothing to fear regarding factory resets/data wiping on 4.0.4?
Yes. If you have the sane/safe chip no need to worry.
2. Some mention that USB debugging should be checked - others make not mention of it at all. Should USB debugging be checked in this case when going up to 4.1.2 or back down to 4.0.4?
Doesn't matter whether it is on or off. It's just for debugging. I usually keep it on since you don't know when it might be useful. There is no harm in keeping it ticked.
3. Should the SIM card be removed before flashing with odin or is it alright to leave it in?
No need to remove sim card.
After flashing, your phone will restart. If it doesn't go past the samsung logo, you'll need to pull out the battery, reinsert it, boot into recovery and perform a factory reset. Wiping cache and dalvik isn't necessary. However, if you do boot into recovery (which most certainly you'll have to, to do the data wipe), it takes less than 15 seconds to wipe the cache and dalvik.
5. I have read in a couple of cases that the SIM lock has been activated after this flashing procedure on a previously unlocked phone. I have found an unlock apk on this forum that can resolve this issue. But why does it happen? How common is this problem?
I believe it's designed to be that way. However, I am not sure about this one. Sorry.
6. In my 4.1.2 download from Sammobile there are 2 files that are not mentioned in the articles I have read. emmc_EXT4_16GB.pit and emmc_EXT4_32GB.pit - what are these for? Are they needed for this procedure?
No need for the .pit files. Better avoid them at all costs.
7. How long should the reboot process take after the flashing is complete? - or after how long should I start to get worried if it seems to be stuck?
Don't worry. You'll know when to worry ... Taking upto 5 minutes is perhaps normal. After that, update here if you think there is a problem.
8. If I wish to return to stock 4.0.4 (here the brick bug is the problem yes?)- is the procedure the same as flashing 4.1.2? And if I do go back to 4.0.4 stock will the phone work with KIES again?
Yes, and yes.
9. I have odin 3.07 - is this version appropriate for this procedure?
Better use v1.83 or v1.85. I've read a complaint against the latest one. Old is gold in some cases

Thanks for your answers. I appreciate it. I've done this kind of thing loads of times on other types of device, but I'm always nervous as hell when it's the first time and don't want any holes in my understanding of the process.

Firstly,
Idk exactly about USB debugging but what i do know is that...
"USB Debugging is intended for development purposes only. It can be used to copy data between your computer and your device, install applications on your device without notification, and read log data." A few apps use it, like the aforementioned PdaNet app. USB Debugging can also be used with ADB when issuing commands from a command line on your computer to your Android handset or tablet. One-Click root apps often require USB Debugging to be enabled to deliver the exploit that roots your device.
SIM card wouldn't affect anything, so it doesn't matter if you leave it in the phone..
After Flashing the JB, first check whether the phone goes into boot loop or anything like that....if you experience any problems then do the factory reset, wipe cache...though its usually recommended to factory reset anyways..
I don't think we need to flash the "emmc_EXT4_16GB.pit" or the other pit file..
The reboot process shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes max..
Well i have gone from custom ROM 4.1.2 XXLSJ back to the stock 4.0.4 using the usual flashing steps of ODIN....I didn't experience any problems..
If its anything above Odin3v1.85 it shouldn't be a problem...
Press thanx if i helped..
Is there any need to do any factory reset/cache wiping from recovery before flashing 4.1.2?
I guess that when I flashed jb leak I had all those questions, and maybe a couple of more.
Then I read about Mobile Odin, flashed & rooted my device in half a smoke (3 mins). All I had to do was select the 3 tar files.
The flash did network lock my device. Galaxysim Unlock solved it for me.
good luck and happy flashing.

Only once. Either before flashing the ROM, or after. Order doesn't matter.

I would imagine then it's better to do it whilst on 4.0.4 prior to flashing (since I have the sane chip) so that you don't get the possible failed boot after flashing 4.1.2 with odin.
So after doing the wipes in recovery prior to flashing, is the phone turned off by a long press of the power button?

No, I don't think so. Come to think of it, I've never tried that A battery pull works though

Do you mean it's not better to factory reset before flashing or the long press doesn't turn off the phone from recovery (in which case best to pull the battery out)?

Well since your flashing 4.0.4 its pretty much a must to also install custom kernel to avoid possible silly bricks by wiping data.
So simply flash rom via odin and then do same for custom kernel like Siyah and then reboot into kernel and wipe data/factory reset and you're off

I know what you mean. I haven't even done this procedure yet and I'm dreaming of bricked phones/ corrupted IMEIs etc.
Probably a bit melodramatic I know.
It did occur to me that instead of flashing stock 4.1.2 from stock 4.0.4, it may be better to flash the Siyah kernel to my current 4.0.4. This way I can back up efs, do a nandroid and titanium - before embarking on fully fledged ROM flashing etc.
What do you think?

Well...the beauty of flashing is that you can do both Stock & Custom. You can also Dual Boot if you want.
My advice is this:
1) Always Back up EFS folder (HC-ktool is a good app for that).
2) Get Titanium Back up Pro.
3) Flash CMW or Flash siyah, it can't never hurt (well, if you go JB leak, might wanna try usin stock kernel first and the flash a custom kernel)
4) Get mobile odin Pro (so you can flash as many stock ROMs as you like, with the chance of getting bricked or soft bricked close to none + you'll always be rooted)
5) Read about ROMs features. You are the only person in the world that knows what ROM will fit your needs.
6) Start flashing.
7) If you are scared about bricks, read the bricked device's threads. That way you will know what NOT to do.
In my experience, I went jb and never came back.
Now, you really dream about IMEI, lol, that's something
I haven't flashed 4.1.2 yet. I was going to do it last night but realised I had forgotten my GPS active and the battery went flat. I took this as an omen and aborted the mission.
I've been reading around the subject for days. There seem to be so many people that encounter problems that it is difficult to have any perspective. The myriad of users that flash stuff via odin without any trouble obviously don't post that it went well - so you read 10 problem posts and never see the other thousand flashes that went without a hitch.
I also have read on xda that the leaked JB 4.1.2 is somewhat buggy. I'm not sure how buggy, but the lock screen freeze would be annoying in practice.
Again the carrot of official jb has been dangled before us - supposedly in February now.......Given that this will probably be the last official release for the S2 I might hang on and wait for it - then embark on the routing/custom ROM journey.

Well, you read 10 problems while flashing, right now we got 50.000 users going thru these threads, here, at XDA.
Jb is buggy, it's a leak, but too buggy? don't think so.
As for the bugs, we got plenty of people coming up with work arounds & fixes every day. In my case, I only have the lockscreen issue (let's face it, it doesn't always happens, like maybe 1 time a day and it's only for 3 seconds till the capacitive buttons light up. If you lock the screen and re unlock it with the power button, you're off. For me, it's not even an issue). I don't even remember when was the last time I had this issue, maybe 3 days ago now that I think about it.
Where's flashing, there's risk. TRUE. That's why I layed the Mobile Odin Pro option for you, that could be the best way to lose you flashing's fright.
BTW: we are getting the lime pie update, SII Plus was released just now

I have had a look at mobile Odin Pro and I like the look of it. Thanks for the tip. To use it I need to root the S2.
I have seen this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 - this seems simple. I could also flash the Siyah kernel via Odin. Which root method would you recommend? The first method seems to avoid the triangle issue - although this is not a big deal.
With a routed device I can backup efs etc before flashing anything else. Does the efs folder contain the simlock status?
Also, as you know I have been looking at the leaked jb, but perhaps it might be worth looking at neatrom 4.1.2 (or similar) instead?
I seem to get the impression that mobile Odin Pro is a safe method. Is it safer than using PC Odin?

[Q] Some doubts with my gs2

Hello.
My brother just bought his new razr hd and gave me his galaxy s2. At least its much better than blackberry.
Im having some problems with it and I have some doubts.
thanks for your time
-I didnt ask my brother because he is travelling for his work.
1- Once rooted, always rooted? I saw somewhere that if I reflash the baseband I could lose the root. Is that true?
My brother rooted it with 4.0.3 with a bug that you dont even needed to plug the phone to the pc to root it. It had a brazilian firmware, then he flashed a trinidad tobago firmware and did the root. I want to reflash the modem and try new modems. Thats why im concerned about. Can I do it without any concerns?
My root does not have the yellow triangle on boot.
2- Then he installed CM9. Can I factory wipe it via CWM? Im afraid of that superbrick bug, but it now has CM9 kernel. Im safe, right?
It has the crazy chip. Checked with an app.
3- Are you guys also having problem with the new ROM manager version? 5.9.3.0? None functions that need root permissions work. If I uninstall to previous version, it works.
4- Why ROM manager it asks me to install a "new" 6.0.1.0 version when I have a 6.0.1.2 CWMR?
5- I did a factory reset via menu. It is the same as doing factory wipe on CWMR?
6- When he flashed CM9, the wifi roaming bug was fixed. But after I factory reset, it seems to stopped working. When I move between access points, the signal increases then it disconnects and reconnects...
Thanks.

Before I answer anything, please check this out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1763193
Now then,
1. Root remains until u manually unroot it (by removing su binary and Superuser app), unroot using SuperSU app, or flash a stock firmware. Flashing a baseband (or modem) doesn't unroot your phone. But flashing an entire firmware does. Still, you can always root if you get unrooted!
2. Brickbug only affects stock 4.0.4 firmwares with stock kernel. CM9 should be safe to do a full wipe, since you're on a custom kernel. :good:
3 & 4. I suggest you stay away from ROM Manager as many members have reported problems while using it. Since u already have CWM, you don't need ROM Manager.
5. Factory reset via Settings and via Recovery ought to be the same. I prefer to do via CWM though.
6. I don't know about this as I haven't tried CM9 for a long time! Maybe you should check out the CM9 discussion thread to see if someone else has ur issue, and look for a possible fix for it.
