Rom/kernel suggestion - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Please forgive another which rom thread, I know there are many.
What I need is a daily driver with reliability and stability. Mtd or voodoo as the stock fs I found to be unbearably slow. Ofc de bloated, binged, and ropted. 0 missed calls, or at least as little as can be hoped for. Oh and the last point and the most important, no real chance at the sd pox that seems to claim so many on the newer roms (I use 32 gig that I don't wish to replace).
For what its worth I am and have been running ukb with pbj fire quite a while now and have loved it the whole way. While I live this rom I can no longer bare the missed calls. I'm not wiling to suffer stock and don't wish to risk my as card. I also want to use this for my daily phone (not for tinkering beyond a reasonable effort)
before somebody says that risk goes along with flashing new roms. Please note that I have used sc until ukb and still am completely happy with the rom other than the missed calls which I know isn't the devs fault.
I've heard that cm isn't really for daily use yet. And the gb roms are eating cards. So that is why I'm asking for advise on a new daily room.
Any suggestions, please I can't deal with stock or missed calls, what do I do.

I've found that the powerwashed ED05 v2 has been the best. Granted its fairly stock, it is deodexed, debinged, debloated, and rooted. I don't get force closes like i did with evil fascination or any of the comm roms.

I personally recommend Debloated Touchwiz with PBJ voodoo. It's a stock feel and the PBJ kernel is fast and stable.

[Q] What ROM to start with?

Hello All,
I just rooted my Vibrant last night, and installed ROM Manager/Clockwork recovery mod. The last thing I did was do a backup of my device in case I either don't like the ROM or need to switch back. Anyhow, needless to say I'm a newbie to all of this. I've been trying to do some research, but I see an endless amounts of ROMS. I've seen some videos on Euegene's roms and some of the team whiskey ROMs. I was hoping you guys might be able to give me some tips or recommendations on what ROMs to start or stick with. Lastly, if I installed a ROM what happens to my purchased apps from the market? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Well here is ALL personal choice. You will notice that somethings will work for you and somethings will not work for others.
I would start with Nero V3. It is a Froyo (2.2) ROM based on Gingerbread (2.3). Again it is not Gingerbread.
Why start with this one and not Nero V4.1??
Well because Nero V4.1 has voodoo lagfix installed by default and TRUST ME you don't want to start messing around with voodoo if you are a newbie. Everyday there is someone whining about their phone not working because of voodoo.
But mainly inform yourself about every ROM and try them out, people flash ROMs all the time just to try them out so I recommend doing the same. And don't try to break your head trying to know everything it will get to you later on (like Over Clocking, Kernels, Under Voltage, etc.)
And you can download all your purchased apps again from the Market (data does not save this way). I highly HIGHLY recommend Titanium Backup, it will restore your apps just the way the used to be before (with data), just make sure not to restore system apps just third party apps.
When I first started flashing roms I tried axura just because the theme over it was like nothing I have ever seen before. At the time appearance was more important to me vs performance. Ever since that I have stuck with axura because its got looks and performance especially now.
Its all personal choice. I recommend that u read the first post of the roms and see the features list. Then look at the screenshots to see if u like the look of it. Finally just read some of the recently posts in the thread of current problems and see if u live this those bugs. Enjoy your rom hunt. To me its the most fun part!

I believe stock JL5 froyo is the way to go.
Do you want touchwiz?
Do you want a themed rom?
What is important to you.. what are you hoping for?
If you want performance and stability I think Nero V4.1 (yes, with voodoo) is the way to go. There is nothing tricky about voodoo... just know that it will convert your file system (nothing is lost) to EXT4 which is MUCH faster. This is what the Galaxy S comes with stock. It is also what popular roms like CyanogenMod do.
The one caveat is you MUST disable it before you flash something else over it to be safe. You simply go to CWR and disable on next reboot.... that's it. Takes about 5-10 minutes to convert and there is a voice telling you what's happening while it boots.
Nero V4.1 is going to be very popular so themes, etc will be abundant soon.
I also REALLy like Axura roms (i am one of the few on here who seem to be willing to give both developers a lot of respect). I was one of the very few who noticed data drops on the latest axura .9 rom though. With it I also used voodoo and both it and nero 4.1 were almost identical quadrant scores 1520+.
That said, quad scores mean nothing... what is important is BOTH fly. I do like the animation/theme of axura a lot more. It comes with a lot more launchers to choose from. Some consider this bloat, some like the options.
I am using Nero 4.1 with voodoo and ADW EX and I do not think anyone on this board could be as happy with their setup. I'll leave it at that.

Touchwiz is what your phone is running now which includes the launcher, icons, samsung apps and such. Its basically Samsung's overlay to Android just like Htc uses Sense and Motorola uses Moto Blur. I personally use Nero 4.1 with Touchwiz just because I like some of Touchwize's elements even though I use Launcher pro to customize to my delight. I can tell you once you start flashing it becomes and addiction. Also don't forget that if you back up your stock rom and load a froyo rom, you cant just go back to eclair without flashing an eclair kernal first. Read up on that. Good luck!!!
I strongly recommend Version V4. 1

Thank you for the info!
I'm happy to report I'm now running Nero4.1. Thank you guys!!! . I can see how this can be addicting (flashing different roms) haha.
Awesome man, be sure and enable voodoo for a much snappier phone. Just remember to disable it (via CWR, or the app Voodoo toggle) before you flash anything.
Worst case you forget, you can just use ODIN (recommend the alt method in my noob guide because it keeps root).

Thanks again for the help, and tip! I just downloaded voodoo toggle. This ROM is awesome! By the way, if i wanted to switch to another ROM let's say Axura's ROM would I need to flash my phone back to stock or can I just load that ROM up? I just didn't want to miss any steps lol. Anyhow, thank you all again!

Okay which rom should I use. Please read

Well I had my mind made up on Supercurio's KA6 Build with Voodoo and after some reading I came across this person's rom s0niqu3 (KA6+voodoo+bln+cifs), I just want a rom that is basicly the Samsung KA6 build, but speed up so my phone doesnt lag. Which one should I use?
You mean kernel, when we refer to 'roms' we're talking about the framework, theming, and applications that make up the software that sits on top the kernel.
To answer your question though, you will do just fine with one of supercurio's stock+voodoo kernels. Very reliable and the lag fix is totally worth it...will probably save you hours of fiddling/waiting for the UI over the lifetime of the phone.
Sent from my Vibrant using XDA App, Bionix-v 1.21
the new bionix-v rom is very quick and it isn't to far off from looking stock when you get the touchwiz version.
Do these and you can't go wrong.

I still suggest Eugene's GingerClone R2. I have been using this for about 2 months and it is still the best performing ROM that I've experienced for the Vibrant.
Trigger 2.6.2
It has the kernel you want (voodoo, voodoo sound, voodoo color and almost completely stock). The ROM is stable, no known bugs that I'm aware of. Beautifully themed too.
Edit, just saw .3 was released. I would load it up, get it running how you like, and then flash s0niqu3s kernel on top of it. I do feel it's better than KA7+voodoo.

[Q] Stock vs Custom ROMs

I've had the Fascinate for about 8 months now, and originally applied a custom ROM in order to get the benefits of 2.2 (flash, etc). At the moment, I'm running CommRom 2.0, Sense themed, with a PBJ kernel. And while I'm able to access an abundance of themes and modifications with custom ROMs, I can't help but notice how buggy they can be. My phone randomly shuts off/becomes unresponsive at least once a day (requiring a hard reboot). Programs will often randomly force close in the background.
I also fail to notice any sort of performance improvement with the phone. Programs open and objects render just as fast, if not faster on my mother's Fascinate (which is completely stock). Also, battery drain has been a roller coaster... from what I've seen it's pretty crappy on stock ROMs, as well as my themed CommRom 2.0 ROM. The best battery life I've seen is on unthemed CommRom 2.0.. does that make any sense?
So, I was thinking about just reverting back to stock ED01, ED03, or whatever is out now, rooting it, and leaving it as is. I'll probably give CM7 or MIUI a try when they get out of the beta/alpha stages for our phone. What do you guys think?
Sounds like you have "sleep of death" issues. They can be hard to track down, but there are some steps to take to eliminate known problems.
Some people prefer custom ROMs some prefer stock, it's up to each user. I'm on CommRom myself, but since I use ADW launcher, I don't get the full experience. Mainly I like the tweaking I get to do on custom ROMs. Some people get better performance on them, but others get better performance on stock. I haven't personally noticed a huge difference.
My gf has a stock fascinate and it has problems too. I am running comrom 2.0 with pbj and have no issues. Each phone is different and even running a stock rom will have issues.
I think we forget how our stock phones ran beacuase most of us have been rooted for such a long time.
I think if your phone runs fine on a rom, just leave it. I know most of us are flash happy, but if you're having troubles run the sc roms. Those were always super solid.

[Answered] Need to disable Voodoo & use Odin to flash Simply Honey 5.1?

I'm trying to update my wife's phone to Simply Honey 5.1 coming from Sipmly Galaxy 2.8. Both ROMs use kernels by cmenard, and both kernels include Voodoo.
I have 2 questions about the installation:
1. The Simply Honey install instructions specifically say to use Odin. Is this necessary? I've never used Odin before and I've flashed my own Vibrant about a dozen times without a problem.
2. Since the ROM my wife is coming from has Voodoo enabled, and since Simply Honey 5.1 has Voodoo in the kernel, do I need to disable Voodoo before flashing? I thought that you only need to disable Voodoo if the kernel you're flashing doesn't support it -- is this inaccurate? Or is there some other reason to disable Voodoo before flashing?
Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any replies.
The more important question is: Does your wife like having her phone tinkered with?
The Gingerbread ROMs are coming along, but they're not quite stable yet. You might want to stick with Froyo unless your wife is a fan of tinkering and using workarounds for GPS and battery life issues.
As for your questions:
1) When in doubt, follow the creators install instructions to a "T".
2) I've seen quite a few ROMs recommend disabling Voodoo before flashing them, but never seen one say that disabling Voodoo would be harmful to flashing them. So I'd disable it just in case.
You're also going to need to switch to the Gingerbread bootloader if you're going to stick with an i9000 leaked Gingerbread ROM. Messing with the bootloader is the only way I know of to completely kill your phone if you mess it up. Fair warning!
If you want Gingerbread without having to mess with bootloaders, I suggest MIUI or CM7. CM7 just went stable, and I've had no major issues with MIUI since SS-12 Revamped came out. MIUI has the most robust theming system I've seen in a ROM, so your wife may enjoy it. Just be ready to have her phone covered in Pink with fluffy icons and whatnot when she's done with it

Wow, thanks. You answered questions I didn't even know I had!
My wife wants a phone that "just works", but she wanted the speed and customizability of a custom ROM (her whole phone is already themed purple, haha), so I guess I'll go shopping for another Froyo ROM (or try to wipe and reinstall her current ROM to try to fix the crashes and accelerometer problems she's been having.)
Thanks again, I appreciate it.
A nice stable froyo ROM you can try is called toxic 8..since she likes themes, they have a bunch of them and the developer has added a lot of nice touches that are gingerlike
Again, if she likes theming and doesn't much use the GPS (it works, but requires an extra step or two), MIUI is unique and has the most robust theming of any Vibrant ROM.
I used to be a die hard fan of Simple Honey Roms, but they all became too unstable or had various issues, and caused me alot of problems and aggravation!! So far the only ROM that's been a super performer is team Toxic's Crazy 8 Froyo mixed with GB Rom, that works 100% with every option and with blazing speed and performance, Its your choice, but if you want to avoid the music from your wife when SH starts to hose up, Id stay away from it, especially 5.0 and double especially 5.1 but then again maybe your a gluten for punishment and NO MORE lovin from the wife, until things are right again. LOL Good luck JMHO based on experience with all the SH Rom's BTW I appreciates EB's work, but it still needs time to evolve, eventually there gonna be great ROM's.

Stock Rom vs Developed Roms

Maybe I'm the only one on the forums but considering I've searched and not found any threads so far, thought I'd post a thread to get some opinions from others who may have possibly not posted so far.
I've moved from stock to rooting my device, flashing the kernel (both with siyah and entropy) in addition to flashing custom roms ([ROM] (2.3.6) UCKJ4 "LeakedStockV4"/BraviaEngine/ICS-Transitions/BLN(12/07)) and ([ROM] UnNamed v1.3.2 - (12/9/2011)) and my experience has been so far that the stock rom has produce a more fluid natural experience than these roms.
of course I HAVE wipded data and cache from the phone (not internal_sd and external_sd) but stock rom has been the best experience for me.
If I am right, please chime in, if I am wrong, please guide what I need to do first, in order to fix it. I'm a few clicks away from going off root - of course I haven't recorded my experience but I guess it's my word against anything else at this point.
Unnamed is much smoother to me than the other roms. I'm a flash maniac and I've stuck with it. I'm very pleased.
You need to give it a day or so to build the cache up. It'll be slow for a day or two. Give it some time.

I'm new to this, but that's the first time I've heard that. Thanks for the heads-up. I'm currently running the UnNamed ROM and I don't think I've experienced anything odd, other than SetCPU causing some weird things to happen, even when running the "optimized" settings (making the lock button take screen shots as opposed to locking the phone). I've since uninstalled it. But I'd never heard that about letting the cache build up. You really do learn something new everyday.
UnNamed is like butter. I keep trying other ROMs...and keep coming back to UnNamed.
Simple answer
UnNamed is the way to go. If your phone dosent like it, its because it's defective.
+1 for UnNamed
Flashed between a few ROMs, back to UnNamed. It's just THAT amazing.
You can always flash a theme on top if you want a different look.
I've been a MIUI fan for a while now, tried almost everything else, always come back to MIUI. To each their own.
i also have to say unnamed is one of the greatest rom. its so smooth and fast.
im currently running task650's icsd out v5 and its pretty fast too.
Shoman's stock V5 is the greatest rom
I was on serendipity 8.2 for a while and have been on unnamed for a while now. They are the same to me. Speed smoothness and battery life seem the same. Both great

The Galnet MIUI is what I switch to if I do get the itch to use another ROM. Like it too.
Pretty much almost anything but straight stock is going to be better.
All the bloatware services running in the stock ROM are going to potentially lag it out.
Im not sure what's wrong with your phones but the only ROM I experienced lag on is CM7. Stock, UnNamed, MIUI.. the list goes on. they were all smooth. CM was the only one that was not.
Personal preference: UnNamed
