Stock Rom vs Developed Roms - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Maybe I'm the only one on the forums but considering I've searched and not found any threads so far, thought I'd post a thread to get some opinions from others who may have possibly not posted so far.
I've moved from stock to rooting my device, flashing the kernel (both with siyah and entropy) in addition to flashing custom roms ([ROM] (2.3.6) UCKJ4 "LeakedStockV4"/BraviaEngine/ICS-Transitions/BLN(12/07)) and ([ROM] UnNamed v1.3.2 - (12/9/2011)) and my experience has been so far that the stock rom has produce a more fluid natural experience than these roms.
of course I HAVE wipded data and cache from the phone (not internal_sd and external_sd) but stock rom has been the best experience for me.
If I am right, please chime in, if I am wrong, please guide what I need to do first, in order to fix it. I'm a few clicks away from going off root - of course I haven't recorded my experience but I guess it's my word against anything else at this point.

Unnamed is much smoother to me than the other roms. I'm a flash maniac and I've stuck with it. I'm very pleased.

You need to give it a day or so to build the cache up. It'll be slow for a day or two. Give it some time.

I'm new to this, but that's the first time I've heard that. Thanks for the heads-up. I'm currently running the UnNamed ROM and I don't think I've experienced anything odd, other than SetCPU causing some weird things to happen, even when running the "optimized" settings (making the lock button take screen shots as opposed to locking the phone). I've since uninstalled it. But I'd never heard that about letting the cache build up. You really do learn something new everyday.

UnNamed is like butter. I keep trying other ROMs...and keep coming back to UnNamed.

Simple answer
UnNamed is the way to go. If your phone dosent like it, its because it's defective.

+1 for UnNamed
Flashed between a few ROMs, back to UnNamed. It's just THAT amazing.
You can always flash a theme on top if you want a different look.

I've been a MIUI fan for a while now, tried almost everything else, always come back to MIUI. To each their own.

i also have to say unnamed is one of the greatest rom. its so smooth and fast.
im currently running task650's icsd out v5 and its pretty fast too.

Shoman's stock V5 is the greatest rom

I was on serendipity 8.2 for a while and have been on unnamed for a while now. They are the same to me. Speed smoothness and battery life seem the same. Both great

Was on UnNamed for a bit and now on Shoman's stock V5.
Both have felt the same to me.

The Galnet MIUI is what I switch to if I do get the itch to use another ROM. Like it too.

Pretty much almost anything but straight stock is going to be better.
All the bloatware services running in the stock ROM are going to potentially lag it out.

Im not sure what's wrong with your phones but the only ROM I experienced lag on is CM7. Stock, UnNamed, MIUI.. the list goes on. they were all smooth. CM was the only one that was not.
Personal preference: UnNamed

[Q] Stock vs Custom ROMs

I've had the Fascinate for about 8 months now, and originally applied a custom ROM in order to get the benefits of 2.2 (flash, etc). At the moment, I'm running CommRom 2.0, Sense themed, with a PBJ kernel. And while I'm able to access an abundance of themes and modifications with custom ROMs, I can't help but notice how buggy they can be. My phone randomly shuts off/becomes unresponsive at least once a day (requiring a hard reboot). Programs will often randomly force close in the background.
I also fail to notice any sort of performance improvement with the phone. Programs open and objects render just as fast, if not faster on my mother's Fascinate (which is completely stock). Also, battery drain has been a roller coaster... from what I've seen it's pretty crappy on stock ROMs, as well as my themed CommRom 2.0 ROM. The best battery life I've seen is on unthemed CommRom 2.0.. does that make any sense?
So, I was thinking about just reverting back to stock ED01, ED03, or whatever is out now, rooting it, and leaving it as is. I'll probably give CM7 or MIUI a try when they get out of the beta/alpha stages for our phone. What do you guys think?
Sounds like you have "sleep of death" issues. They can be hard to track down, but there are some steps to take to eliminate known problems.
Some people prefer custom ROMs some prefer stock, it's up to each user. I'm on CommRom myself, but since I use ADW launcher, I don't get the full experience. Mainly I like the tweaking I get to do on custom ROMs. Some people get better performance on them, but others get better performance on stock. I haven't personally noticed a huge difference.
My gf has a stock fascinate and it has problems too. I am running comrom 2.0 with pbj and have no issues. Each phone is different and even running a stock rom will have issues.
I think we forget how our stock phones ran beacuase most of us have been rooted for such a long time.
I think if your phone runs fine on a rom, just leave it. I know most of us are flash happy, but if you're having troubles run the sc roms. Those were always super solid.

Help me choose a ROM

Hey guys,
I've tried CM7, Revolutions and Asgard for GB Roms and for me and my 10 hour work days, I need something that'll last a little more and will respond better. My experience with the three roms were not the best, but promising. It didn't dissuade me from GB roms, but rather excited me. I just am gonna have to wait until they're 100% smooth haha.
Anyway, I've only ever really used 2.2 Roms and the only ones I've ever loaded was Axura, Nero/Bionix, and Trigger (and flagship, but I don't count that because it was for a day). I'm wanting something different and I think I've decided on these, but if you guys recommend something different please let me know.
Anyway, I would love to hear your opinions and I appreciate the time you guys are taking to respond.
Respectfully,
Vahdyx
I like Bi-Winning and most other 2.2.1 ROMs just because my phone seems to do really well with them. But to be honest, everyone is going to have something different to say. My best advice is just pick one and give it a try for a few days and see how you like it. If you don't like it (or even if you do!) try another, and see which you like better...
Well, for GB I'm currently using Revolution RC1.
It's pretty neat.
Just one thing, when he uploads something, wait for everyone else to try it.
It seems like the roms always work on his phone and everyone else's just bootloops.
The current version is very stable and fast though.
For 2.2, dunno if you've tried Boinix NextGen v2.
That one was one of the best ROMS I've ever tried.
Not a single error anywhere and the battery was awesome.
for the 2.21 roms try Biwinning or V if you want to try a good GB rom try the Asgard Rom it is excellent
Hey vahdyx,
I'm a big fan of vanilla ROMs. If you're going to stick with 2.2 for now, I can tell you that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054032 is great. There are little bugs though, such as the dialer crashing frequently when editing contact info.
If you want a vanilla ROM with GPS and Swype preinstalled, there is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832532, but I haven't tried this one.
If you do end up using a 2.2 or 2.2.1 ROM, I highly suggest using the Bali kernel found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043947. This kernel optimizes battery life so that your phone will have an easier time making it through your workday, but is definitely not for you if you're an overclocker.
From what I've heard, if you are currently at 2.3, if you want to go back to Froyo, I *believe* that you have to ODIN back to stock first. http://androidspin.com/2010/08/09/how-to-restore-or-recover-your-samsung-vibrant/. Youtube is useful if you don't know how to do this.
Hope this helps!
I suggest sgs hybrid it runs really great its a 2.3 JVP rom and it has great speed and battery

Most Stable, Least Quirky ROM now?

Hello all,
I was just wondering what your impressions were re, the most stable ROM out now, the one with the least issues. Is there one that seems to be most hassle-free? I'm not nessasarily looking for a lot of bells and whistles...
Thanks!
Used to enjoy Theory's ROMs but felt that every few weeks he'd discontinue a ROM and release a new one. If you want a sense ROM that has a good following, I'm gonna be taking a look at SynergyROM, or if you want a non-sense ROM (AKA AOSP) I'd go CM7 (CynergyMod 7).
I'm aosp fan personally. I've used Cyanogenmod extensively, as well as Omgb. I'm currently running TheROM V4 and it is rock solid stable and very responsive. Not many bells and whistles. Just vanilla gingerbread.
It depends on what you want aosp or sense
For me I'm an aosp girl I'm running cyanogenmod 7 v1.7 loving it and. Ill give the kernel I'm using for battery life
If I don't want aosp anymore I always go to. http://teambamf.net/
I love das bamf! or if not go to http://themikmik.com/forumdisplay.php?1004-HTC-Thunderbolt-Developer-Forum I personal really like chingy's roms
I don't like Droid theory just saying
If you like sense, I really like Chingy's Gingeritis 3D.
Second vote for Gingeritis 3D. Stable and great battery life if you just use better governors.
Definitely the wrong forum, bro.
been rocking cleantheory to shiftsense for the past two weeks. both have been rock solid. DT is stopping development though, so take it for whatever that means. i think at some point all ROMS eventually lose development. hopefully whatever you choose is good enough for your daily driver if you dont like flashing over and over.
ShiftS3ns3 by DroidTho3ry rocks - give it a shot.
I think I'm going to give Gingeritis 3D a try. I'm not a pro at flashing new ROMs... i've only done it once (running BAMF 1.3 now). Is there anything special I should do? Is it just like flashing the BAMF ROM? (can I do it from ROM Manager?)
Thanks!

DT mentioned that he's taking a break, so hopefully he won't be gone too long. His work is better than stock.. HTC ought to hire him and get out of his way.
If you want Sense ROM, can't go wrong with SkyRaider Preview 2 or ShiftS3NS3.
If you want AOSP based ROM, SHIFTAO5P hasn't given me any problems whatsoever.
If you can live without the 3d, skyraider preview 2 is rock solid.

FWIW, I have been pretty pleased with the Synergy ROMs and I'd be running one now but...... I was one who fell victim to either the ROM Manager update or the CWM update and now cannot restore any of my backups. I tried various earlier CWMs w/o success and finally un-rooted, installed stock, did the OTA update and I'm back 100% stock.
I mention this because it's relevent to the question..... Battery life is good, the stability is excellent and, once customized to my liking, I really can't see much difference other than the "billions and billions" of crap apps VZW and HTC have added to the phone. If I could get rid of them I'd be just fine with the stock ROM believe it or not!
I'll probably re-root at some point and it's VERY likely I'll go back to the Synergy ROM because it works. I've had rebooting problems with other ROMs I've tried and I'm no longer in a mood to experiment, maybe later?
OK, it's later. I rooted, using Revolutionary, used Titanium backup to remove VZWs crapware and then figured why not? and installed the latest Synergy ROM.
I guess I just can't live with a non-rooted phone for 24 hours..... <sigh>
i keep trying out different roms all the time(sense & aosp based) and find that i'll keep going back to Synergy. it seems the most stable just i having issues with settling with just one rom.
Everyone has a different opinion on what stable is. I think CM7 is plenty stable, but there are those that disagree for whatever logical/illogical reason. Mainly, if you aren't prepared to encounter issues either brought up by your own experimenting or those of the ROM developer, I would stay with what the phone came with and be happy you have a phone that (sort of) works
If you are more brave, then read on.
If you read the comments about most ROMs, there is no such thing as a 100% infallible, will never ever let you down, stable ROM. ROMs are generally bleeding edge and users accept the fact they may have bugs in exchange for the phone doing more than what HTC and verizon allowed them to do. However, ignore most comments, because those are generally just people that screwed something up either knowingly or unknowingly. Like people that go the the hospital (for those that have family members that work at one), not everyone is ready to admit they did something stupid and have it on public display

Skyraider with Ziggy's kernel is EXACTLY this. It has average to good battery life though. Everything works, including it being compatible with call recording and incredicontrol (voltage control app). It also has the notification tweaks that no one has quite duplicated and I have grown to love.
I find Synergy to be an excellent rom as well, but the themes available do not suit me at all. It does support everything with good battery life and also adds HTC Hub which is awesome. It also has DConfig, which I just have not gotten a great benefit from but I guess some might.
The theory sense rom was smooth as silk, and seemed to be a happy medium between the first two I posted.
Chingy's rom is VERY slick, but very vanilla. The fact that it is Odexed makes theming harder I think, but for me that means I cannot replace the HTC browser with the AOSP one, and I HATE THE SENSE BROWSER lol.
ALL AOSP roms seem to have squashed most of the crappy battery issues and get great battery life now. This added to a FAR FAR FAR better bluetooth stack for better use with wireless devices like Jawbone, AND compatability with PS3 hardware make them an awesome choice. The ONLY problem is the lack of reliable network location. This means google maps works perfect, but your web browser can and will put you across the world sometimes, as well as weather apps etc. This rules it out for me for now.
Hope that helps
Shifts3ns3 has been the best for me, while I liked synergy, it had more bugs and seemed much slower to me, shift has the useful 3.0 features without the slowdown of a full sense 3.0 rom

[Q] CRT animations and extneded power menu for stock

i have looked and i have not been able to find anything. i just want to know if this is available for the att stcok rom or if anybody is working on it
It's possible, I had it on my device, but then I put in enough additional mods that it wouldn't work on bone stock most likely.
Why not just flash a custom ROM? The only reason I didn't was because I was applying a "if I haven't done it myself, I'm not doing it" rule to force me to learn.
I recommend installing unnamed rom. You won't be able to tell the difference except the bloat is gone, you'll be able to do the CRT animation, you'll have the extended power menu, and as a bonus you'll get an extended notification bar with extra toggles. Not to mention it flashes Entropy's rock solid awesome kernel.
ok thanks for the advice. im not scared of installing custom roms, it is just that i really love the stability of stock roms. I got very fed up with all the roms on my captivate when i would have to explain to people that my phone didnt really work well on certain tasks because i installed custom software lol
but yeah ill give it a shot

There isn't anything that stock does that unNamed doesn't.
Lol I upgraded to the SGS II from the atrix 2 last night. No later than 30 minutes I had unnamed 2.0 rom installed. I miss the qhd screen but everything else about the phone is great.
I have been running unnamed for 3-4 weeks now. It has been super stable, and the extra features are great.

I havnt flashed in a year

Hi, I haven't been an xda user in a while , I used to love tinkering around with my phones all day long.
now, I life has been taking over and I don't have the time to try out new stuff all day long.
that being said, the last rom I tried was a team whiskey bionix v1.3.1 sometime in early 2011 . I don't even think I wiped anything since.
I want a new rom, I feel like my phone is getting sluggish. I don't want to try roms that is going to make the phone slower, or is made for a faster phone (assuming ICS would be out of the question for me)
should I just stick with my current rom and wipe everything? I didn't have any complaints with it.
or are there better ones out now that wont compromise performance.
also another important thing for me is audio quality and saw many recommendations for voodoo sound. I don't have a kernal that supports it. I am running 2.6.32.9 jaeyoon.yoon
so pretty much what is the best rom and kernal combination for me that has no bugs, everything will run nice and snappy on. I don't want to experiment around anymore. I will straight up run the most recommended one.
many thanks in advance
I was in the same boat as you. I loaded Bionix back in February of last year and hadn't touched my phone's ROM since. For some reason I decided to see if there was anything new and sure enough ICS ROMs were available.
I love being on the cutting edge but my phone has to work too. I travel a lot and when I'm on the road I need to be able to depend on the phone working reliably. Looking at the ROMs available I went with the one with the most forum activity - that was ICS Passion. I flashed it first and was immediately impressed. Most everything works with the exception of the speakerphone which, while it does work, it seems like it picks up a lot of background noise.
Since then I've tried a few others but based on reliability and some UI preferences I went back to Passion. There are several battery mods which is nice, I like the Newborn3 battery style myself.
The other thing I've experimented with is the Kernel. I settled on the Glitch kernel because it seems the fastest to me and has no problem with the lock screen. It has Voodoo stuff which I honestly don't use much. The kernel does have issues creating a Nandoid backup but I never use those either ;-)
After using ICS I will not go back. In fact even the newer phones such as the SGS2 hold no attraction for me until there is a good ICS ROM available.
Hope that helps.
First off thank you bigjoe87865 for posting your question as I was in a similar situation. I previously had Axura and it was way too buggy and slugish. I finally had it the other night and started researching posts on the best rom and saw your question.
Second, atatistcheff, you installed ICS Passion and eventually you put the Glitch kernel. What was the reasoning in going about in installing this kernel and not using what was supplied with ICS passion? Would I enjoy my phone with just using ICS?
Was in the same boat as you until this week - long time Froyo user (Trigger and Bi-winning) for the past year. The GB roms always seemed to be too much trouble and not very practical.
After seeing all the positive feedback on the ICS ROMs, I figured I'd give it a shot and installed ICS Passion this week. Was immediately impressed with the speed, stability and functionality. Only problem I has was the battery life - it was simply awful. Saw posts regarding the battery life of SlimICS and flashed it on Friday. Works just as well as Passion, with the battery life I'm used from my Froyo ROMs. My single complaint is that the stock kernel doesn't support Voodoo sound, but I can do without that for the time being.
Long answer short: there's pretty much no reason to avoid ICS at this point - I'm a very light GPS user, so this is not a priority for me.

Passion always had a nagging issue with the lock screen for me. That is every few times when I pressed the power button to wake the phone up it would not respond. I'd have to press several times to get it to wake up. I've seen this issue posted about several times. It's really not serious and as with most issues YMMV. I think you'd be fine with Passion and the stock kernel. I like Glitch because the lock screen issue is non-existant and it seems to work fine with Passion.
You guys want a good ICS rom, flash ICZenwich 1.4, you'll thank me later
For those that want a very good froyo rom then I would go with
