[Q] Noob Question: Installing speedmod with lite'ning rom 6.0 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I am new to the Android community and I just have a questions. My main goals from flashing a new kernel and custom rom would be to get rid of bloatware, get better battery life and more customization.
I am planning on installing the Speedmod kernel along with lite'ning rom 6.0. Is that a good choice?
Also, does the order in how I install them matter? Because in the lite'ning rom post,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1095274
it mentioned that it uses the kernel kernel ninphetamine 2.0.5. Does installing the lite'ning rom overwrite the speedmod kernel? If it does, what's the best order of installing the combination. Also, both of these mention that it comes with root and CWM, does that mean I don't have to root it first? And I can just install it straight from stock?
My current plan to install is to:
Install lite'ning rom 6.0.
Then install the Speedmod kernel.
Thank you so much for any input and help that you guys can provide me.

You can flash any kernel over any ROM. You just have to think what you need, choose the kernel on the basis of that.
Regards.

Is there a post where I can find a list of kernels? Or do you have any recommendations?
I am looking for one that is stable, and have great battery life. If it's fast too, thats a bonus
Thank you

Well I only used two so far, Ninphetamine and Chainfire. Outta them CF is the obvious best IMO, Ninpho drained too much battery, may be for BLN, but I won't give a single percentage for that damn thing.
Link to CF kernel,

Link to Ninpho kernel,

Just give a look at the Original Android Development Section, you will find lot more.
Don't say Thanks, just hit my Thanks button instead,
Regards.

Thanks for the reply. I have a question about BLN. What is it? Every post seems to talk about it but I can't find a definition of it anywhere. :S
And okay, thanks button pressed!

[Q] Lite'ning Rom v.5.0 XXKG6 + Nimphetamine 2.0.5

Hello,
I haven't find anything like an instruction for this.
I actually have the Lite'ning Rom 5.0 XXKG6 on my SGS2, but how can I get that special Kernel on that Rom?
And does that "magical" Kernel really make the batterylife better like many people report?
And does that Kernel work good with the Lite'ning Rom?
Doesnt it work?

As far as i know Litening Rom once used Ninphetamin kernel. Dont know if it still does. Ask in the respective thread or try it urself.
ask here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1095274
urself: Do a backup of ur rom via cwm. Install kernel. See if it works. For kernel install see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179814

ROM + Kernel First use of SG 2

I have my sg2 just today.
Is this a good choice?
ROM: Lite'ning Rom v6.1 XXKH3 - Fast as Lightning
Kernel: Ninphetamine 2.1.3
And must it be rooted or something what I must do first
to know of before I can get this rom installed with kernel?
roms are personal preference. once you have flashed you may or may not like it.
No, there is nothing special you need to do before flashing. Just follow the developers instructions.
i go for roms/kernels that give priorities to batt life
You can't go wrong with lightning ROM. As for the kernel, anything is fine, just experiment with a few when you have the time to see which gives you best performance/battery life. (whichever is your priority)

[Q] A little help! please.

Hi All,
My first post here. Yay!!
I have SGS2 and wanted to have latest and greatest. Spend few days reading this forum and got reasonable understanding of root, kernel, rom and firmware. I've even update my phone from XWKDD to XXKI3 non-wipe Frankenstein version and updated kernel to stock XXKI3 as well. I also then updated rom to VillianROM 3.0 which is very new and has 2.3.5 in it.
All working great and haven't bricked the phone.
However, I am bit confused and was hoping you guys could clear up my confussion.
Basically what I want to know is, does ROM include Kernel?
If so, did I updated my kernel when I flashed VillainROM?
If someone could explain what has happened when I did below.
1. Flashed XWKDD insecure kernel and rooted the phone using superoneclick.
2. Few days later, flashed XXKI3 non-wipe firmware (pda, modem & csc all in one).
3. Flashed XWKDD insecure kernel and rooted phone using superoneclick.
4. Flashed kernel to stock XXKI3 to remove yellow triangle, phone is still rooted.
5. Flashed VillainROM 3.0
Hope I've asked questions correctly, if not forgive me, its only my first post here.
Every rom uses different kernels, now your phone is using the kernel that comes with Villain rom. If you are not happy with the kernel that you are using now you can download one from forums then change it by flashing it using cwm.

So, in my phone I no longer have KI3 stock kernel but instead "inphetamine2.0.5" kernel which is used in Villainrom 3.
will lookup bit more on this kernel to understand what it has to offer.
thanks for information.

Villain 3 is your rom and Ninpethamine 2.0.5 is your rom. I would suggest that you change your kernel to newer version to Ninphetamine 2.1.3 . Go to kernel forums in xda and read some more and you can get more info about all other kernels and you will find performances of each kernels.

I updated kernel as per your suggestion to Ninphetamine 2.1.3, all appears to be ok and didn't find any difference. Well, I am not that techie and my requirements are mostly basic so won't notice much difference but I am sure it is better then previous version.
Thanks for your help.
Theh were using 2.0.5 with VR rom and according to them its more stable and battery friendly. You can monitor it and if you find it better or 2.0.5 better you can always flash it back.

Basically the ROM developper chooses the kernel that he finds more suitable to his ROM and loadsit with the ROM. You can change the kernel if you want after flashing the ROM. For me, I like the cf root KI3 v4.2 kernel (stock kernel), but if you want to overclock or undervolt you'll need a custom kernel (don't know if nimphetamine can UC/UV, I think it can, if not there are other great options too).
The thing I found with the cf root kernel is that for users that don't know how to undervolt or do most advanced stuff (me included) it has better battery life. Or at least for me the cf root kernel showed the best battery life. At the end, the best is to try various kernels and see which is best for you.

[Q] Kernels??? and cyanogenmod

Hi all,
I have a few questions now I am running cm7. And I can't find the answers propably because (you're a NOOOB!!!) I lack some basic understanding of the relation between kernels, mods, modems etc.
First the situation: SGS2 (duh) rooted using CF-Root OXA KG3. Flashed CM7 nightly (88 or 89 don't know from the top of my head).
My understanding of the parts is limited to the rom (cm7) is running on top of the kernel. Where the modem fits in I don't know.
Now the questions:
1. Does cm7 have (and am I running) it's own kernel or am I still on CF-Root?
2. If I want to switch to another kernel how would I do it and where can I find kernels working well with cm7? (I know about Swi7chblades thread)
3. Where is the modem for and can I change and improve it? (sorry couldn't find it in the guides nor the glossary on the wiki)
And I thought I had more but will say what pops up when I read your answers.
I think CM7 has a own kernel but i'm not sure
SiyahKernel v2.0 will work for you if you are still running CM7

Yeah I am still running CM7 and plan to stay there until their is either an ICS version or another ICS rom. Thanks for the kernel suggestion will check it out.
edit: SiyahKernel v2.0 looks promising, I'll put it on the list of things to try.
I tried siyah 2.0 stable but it wasn't a success. I ended up going back to stock and flashing cm7 again. On the modem front I flashed to KI4 and things seem a little better. But I still don't really know what to look for. Anyone?
CM7 has the kernel from cyanogen dev codeworkz. I'm using siyah ATM though which is decently stable.

[Q] How to flash the SiyahKernel

Hello
I'm new into the world of flashing and rooting.
So I want to make my phone last longer and have it rooted.
I actually laid my eye's on the Siyahkernel and it looks really good.
So my question.
How to flash the Siyahkernel into my stock android version?
(Android-version 4.0.3 Baseband-version: i9100BULP6)
Could you recommend me a good tutorial?
And would you recommend the program [root]Triangle away?
Thx for reading
Siyah kernel is really appreciated and accepted by the people, but it is recently reported some problem with ICS Siyah kernel which is in Beta stage now,
so it is recommended to use CF-root for rooting your device first, then you can later on flash your favourite kernels.
Checkout CF-root thread link in my signature.
also refere Guide for ODIN flash,
Feel free to ask if you are not clear
You have to match the version code with your current kernel version, not the Baseband vesrion, to select the appropreate CF-root
Thanks for your help and your signature rocks ^^ keep it this way please
So I have to ask.
How big is the change that (when I use my PC normally and I do what the tutorial says) I brick my device? XD
yup many ppl ,i read thier prblm is some were related to kernel ,and the recent siyah kernels r not stable...so try neak or older versionss of siyah..
alright I'm going to flash the CF-Root kernel:
CF-Root-SGS2_BU_VOD_LPC-v5.4-CWM5.zip
Thx for your reply's

Follow the Siyah's kernel thread, you would know that only one version (the rc6) had some weird "phone brick" issues which, we now know the reasons and the problem is fixed. The last 3.1 version is stable and works perfectly on my device , same thing for almost all users. Just wanted to moderate abit your comment .
well thanks for all your reply's
I installed the CF-root kernel and it workes
I will install the Siyahkernel when it gets a new feauture I need ;D
