I have my sg2 just today.
Is this a good choice?
ROM: Lite'ning Rom v6.1 XXKH3 - Fast as Lightning
Kernel: Ninphetamine 2.1.3
And must it be rooted or something what I must do first
to know of before I can get this rom installed with kernel?
roms are personal preference. once you have flashed you may or may not like it.
No, there is nothing special you need to do before flashing. Just follow the developers instructions.
i go for roms/kernels that give priorities to batt life
You can't go wrong with lightning ROM. As for the kernel, anything is fine, just experiment with a few when you have the time to see which gives you best performance/battery life. (whichever is your priority)

Hi everyone,
I am new to the Android community and I just have a questions. My main goals from flashing a new kernel and custom rom would be to get rid of bloatware, get better battery life and more customization.
I am planning on installing the Speedmod kernel along with lite'ning rom 6.0. Is that a good choice?
Also, does the order in how I install them matter? Because in the lite'ning rom post,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1095274
it mentioned that it uses the kernel kernel ninphetamine 2.0.5. Does installing the lite'ning rom overwrite the speedmod kernel? If it does, what's the best order of installing the combination. Also, both of these mention that it comes with root and CWM, does that mean I don't have to root it first? And I can just install it straight from stock?
My current plan to install is to:
Install lite'ning rom 6.0.
Then install the Speedmod kernel.
Thank you so much for any input and help that you guys can provide me.
You can flash any kernel over any ROM. You just have to think what you need, choose the kernel on the basis of that.
Regards.
Is there a post where I can find a list of kernels? Or do you have any recommendations?
I am looking for one that is stable, and have great battery life. If it's fast too, thats a bonus
Thank you
Well I only used two so far, Ninphetamine and Chainfire. Outta them CF is the obvious best IMO, Ninpho drained too much battery, may be for BLN, but I won't give a single percentage for that damn thing.
Link to CF kernel,

Link to Ninpho kernel,

Just give a look at the Original Android Development Section, you will find lot more.
Don't say Thanks, just hit my Thanks button instead,
Regards.
Thanks for the reply. I have a question about BLN. What is it? Every post seems to talk about it but I can't find a definition of it anywhere. :S
And okay, thanks button pressed!

Question on installing speedmod in litening ROM 6.1

Here is my current settings :
Android Version : 2.3.4

PLEASE HELP!!! THANKS!!!
Hi SGS2 users.
I have been using my stock SGS2 for approx. 1 month now. I have been following with the forums but have yet to do anything with my phone. I have experience with flashing (had an old HTC Diamond 2 using WinMo and did quite a bit of flashing a few years back. I switched to blackberry and has recently returned to xda.
I am completely clueless with the android flashing. I HAVE rooted my phone already though.
So I have seen some tutorials on flashing roms (most are included in the rom description) but what is this kernal flashing. I keep hearing certain kernals performing better then others in terms on bat life and speed.. (such as the nimephatimine(not sure if I have spelt it correctly). How do I use this kernal stuff? Please link me to a tutorial thread if there is one, I tried searching and was unsuccessful.
Any recommendations on ROMs? The top 2 I see are cognition and litening..
Cheers

theres a nice guide there for the basics of flashing with odin. note this guide is for a complete firmware.
the kernel is just a small part of the ROM and it can be easily changed at any time. you flash it any .tar kernel file in odin as a PDA
It's easy. Download the firmware, extract it, you will get a .tar file, open Odin, add the .tar file into Odin PDA section and Flash it. Simple. A full firmware is around 300 mb.
Same goes for Kernel, you will have a .tar file around 5/6 mb, flash it vid Odin by selecting PDA.
Yes, there are lot of kernels, like you said, Ninphetamine, some others are, SpeedMod, RageMod, Hellcat etc. Each and every one has it's own features. Like Ninphetamine adds BLN feature, Voltage tweaks etc, Overclocking etc. The simplest rooted kernel is Chainfire kernel, it's basically a Stock firmware with BusyBox, SuperUser and CWM and I recommend it. But if you want a more versatile one then I recommend Ninphetamine, which I am currently using.
Read about the Kernels under Dev section for more details.
Regards.

if you are looking for a stable Samsung ROM go for Cognition, LEOMAR or Litening. If you are interested in cooking your own rom you can for the ROM kitchen. romkitchen.org/beta
In case of AOSP or CM ROMs you have CM7, MIUI, Oxygen etc. CM7 is not stable. MIUI looks good but is a battery drain for me.
As far as kernels for Samsung ROMs go Speedmod and ninphetamine are the popular ones.

MIUI is built on top of CM7. Meaning it's equally as "not stable".

my phone is currently rooted, when i flash a new rom do i have to reroot it?
Yes if its a stock rom .
No if its a custom rom with root.

Hi All,
My first post here. Yay!!
I have SGS2 and wanted to have latest and greatest. Spend few days reading this forum and got reasonable understanding of root, kernel, rom and firmware. I've even update my phone from XWKDD to XXKI3 non-wipe Frankenstein version and updated kernel to stock XXKI3 as well. I also then updated rom to VillianROM 3.0 which is very new and has 2.3.5 in it.
All working great and haven't bricked the phone.
However, I am bit confused and was hoping you guys could clear up my confussion.
Basically what I want to know is, does ROM include Kernel?
If so, did I updated my kernel when I flashed VillainROM?
If someone could explain what has happened when I did below.
1. Flashed XWKDD insecure kernel and rooted the phone using superoneclick.
2. Few days later, flashed XXKI3 non-wipe firmware (pda, modem & csc all in one).
3. Flashed XWKDD insecure kernel and rooted phone using superoneclick.
4. Flashed kernel to stock XXKI3 to remove yellow triangle, phone is still rooted.
5. Flashed VillainROM 3.0
Hope I've asked questions correctly, if not forgive me, its only my first post here.
Every rom uses different kernels, now your phone is using the kernel that comes with Villain rom. If you are not happy with the kernel that you are using now you can download one from forums then change it by flashing it using cwm.

So, in my phone I no longer have KI3 stock kernel but instead "inphetamine2.0.5" kernel which is used in Villainrom 3.
will lookup bit more on this kernel to understand what it has to offer.
thanks for information.

Villain 3 is your rom and Ninpethamine 2.0.5 is your rom. I would suggest that you change your kernel to newer version to Ninphetamine 2.1.3 . Go to kernel forums in xda and read some more and you can get more info about all other kernels and you will find performances of each kernels.

I updated kernel as per your suggestion to Ninphetamine 2.1.3, all appears to be ok and didn't find any difference. Well, I am not that techie and my requirements are mostly basic so won't notice much difference but I am sure it is better then previous version.
Thanks for your help.
Theh were using 2.0.5 with VR rom and according to them its more stable and battery friendly. You can monitor it and if you find it better or 2.0.5 better you can always flash it back.

Basically the ROM developper chooses the kernel that he finds more suitable to his ROM and loadsit with the ROM. You can change the kernel if you want after flashing the ROM. For me, I like the cf root KI3 v4.2 kernel (stock kernel), but if you want to overclock or undervolt you'll need a custom kernel (don't know if nimphetamine can UC/UV, I think it can, if not there are other great options too).
The thing I found with the cf root kernel is that for users that don't know how to undervolt or do most advanced stuff (me included) it has better battery life. Or at least for me the cf root kernel showed the best battery life. At the end, the best is to try various kernels and see which is best for you.
Hi guys im a noob (yeah i watched the video)
Can you tell me the best rom for me?
I want a stable rom and kernel with at least gingerbread 2.3.4 pre-rooted kernel must be overclockable and undervoltable (btw i would be happy if you told me best undervolting settings at 1.6ghz) it shouldnt be a Battery eating rom and i want it to be highly customizable (not really neceasary) and it shouldnt be updated frequently (wont be necessary if it is stable and enough) thx already sorry for bad english and for being a noob this is my very first android phone.

Repetion of standard dumb question yet again.
Five times today already
About time we had a brain dead section.

noob + overclocking + undervolting = wary result.
Anyhow, If bleeding edge is not your thing, you could try Cognition 1.5.1 with Ragemod kernel (in Original Dev). This is quite stable for past MY USAGE and fits your bill.

I would recommend revolution rom in original android development.
Root your phone. You'll need a kernel with clock work mod installed.
Download the kitchen app. Open the app. Press menu download rom. Then install once download completes.
Once done i would recommend tge cf root kernel v4.2 downloadable from the app. It's quadrant scores are over 4000. I only loose 1% battery overnight and another guy using the rom and kernel went 6 days without charge.
This kernel you cannot undervolt or overclock buy clearly you won't need to.

If you have time, try them and find what matches your requirement.
revolution rom with kitchen app is cool option you may try Darkytool too to uninstall or install apks.
im using batista 2.0 with speedmod kernal and it is sick !!!!! try it let me know what you think
You're only going to find the best ROM for you by trying them. Become familiar with Clockwork Mod Recovery and something like Titanium backup and flash 'till you find something you like.
I'm using Villianrom with the Nymphetamine kernal and I couldn't be happier.
Thanks guys im now using sensation with siyahkernel but i will definitely try Revolution with kitchen app

Batista70 Foxhound 2.1 ROM seems great. Also checkROM. I use Revolution ROM. Don't know, just try them all, it's fun!
Defiantly Resurrection Remix or RootBox for now any way
And kernel either Fluxii, CM9 Remix or Siyah

Bumped from last year? Best ROMs are subjective, test them and make your own decision.
hey all
so this is basic, what has more speed and extra battery life? according to your normal usage and kernel.
i like neatrom lite because of the way its been stripped down and it has all i need
Custom ROM v Stock ROM

My wife has neat rom on her phone, she likes that because she is not interested in mods etc, in some ways it seems smooth and is certainly very stable. However, I prefer CM based ROMs with custom kernels ala dorimanx or Apolo, and recently my battery life and performance on 4.3.1 compared to my wifes 4.1.2 has far outstripped my her neatrom. That being said, my phone is softbricked until I can replace the mini usb tomorrow as I had an issue today with my set up, so wiped rom to put a backup on, and then discovered I have no root and thus can't get back into recovery and have no rom to boot into, no usb means no odin, thus I am without phone until I get usb fixed. I guess thats the long and short of messing around with custom v stock, custom rom = more risk but potentially greater potential to implement the latest code, stock ROM = safe and reliable.
All that I have said is just my opinion based on my experience, I urge you to get your own and have fun doing it
Lite neatrom with apolo is crazy I can run a whole day with semi-aggressive usage! I just saw the CM had it stable on i9100 very lately thus I liked to try.
