im still on the old 305 bb/rom...i have thought about putting a newer rom/bb like the 351.....but my phone is working good now....even with 1.9.0 on it,and the ro.ril hack.
what reason should i update....what better if any would i see.....please let me know....i really just want to mess with it....but it is running good now,so i really need some improvement to justify it.
Answer is pretty simple...
If you update to the latest BB, and theoretically use your phone in the exact same manner as you do now, then you will see improved battery life AND have a quicker phone when you do use it for apps... it's pretty much a no brainer
Does BB and ROM have to be identical? i.e. Can we flash the 354 BB on the 351 ROM? Would there be any potential benefit or drawback to doing so?
Well that used to be more of a commom practice, but a couple months ago TheManii suggested it wasn't such a good idea to flash parts of ROMs such as dsp and amss, etc... so what I suggest to you is for the best performance is:
Choose your ROM, 351 or 353
Flash stock recovery for the ROM you want to use
Download and place update.pkg of that ROM on your SD card
Flash the ROM, do a factory reset and let it boot
Download and have your custom ROM if you're gonna use one on your SD
Flash StreakMod and immediately boot into StreakMod
Flash your custom ROM (recommend StreakDroid or SimpleStreak (I use StreakDroid personally)
Let it boot and you should be trouble free, and all internal SD files and internal flash memory should now be in sync.
You should do all this with your phone at 100% battery.
You should see much better performance, no force closes and much better battery life, at least this was my experience
From all of the discussion I have seen 354 is very little different than 351. The biggest difference is that 354 is customized for the Hong Kong region and has limited language support.

also FYI: if you use a stock rom and your baseband doesnt match (ie bb354 with stock 351) you'll get the blinking leds issue.
This is by design in the rom as it complains that they dont match.
Custom roms have it disabled, they dont care what bb you have (though they should as old bbs are generally a bad thing)

Manii i have a question, i got my phone from dell new rma'ed a week ago, it had 339 bb installed and android 2.2.1, i rooted it, put streakdroid on it and everything then flashed to the 351 amss.bin, now am i still suffering from depleted battery life doing this, or should i flash over the 351 rom itself, then nandroid back to my old save? or how would that work?
first you shouldnt just flash the bb, you should use the entire update pkg,
and secondly that shouldnt directly be involved, did you factory reset before installing sd? it might be a config issue, it's likely more of a SD issue then a bb issue

Hello all, this is my first post (feel free to yell N00000b LOL) so I'll try to be right to the point since I just need advice on a couple of things to keep on going on my learning process (with the tutorial threads and guides).
I got my P500 off of the local eBay (I'm on Venezuela), it was a great deal for a unit with a couple of months of use (had original invoice) and the phone is really "like-new". The thing is that the guy who sold it to me is himself a modder (probably he's around here somewhere) so the phone is already rooted and it's running a custom ROM (and it's supposedly overclocked). As far as I can tell (by comparing the description and installed apps) the ROM that's installed is the one on this thread:
Light 2.2.2 ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1018839
My about screen reports the following:
Model number: LG-P500
Android version: 2.2.2
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #36 The Feb 10 23:04:17 2011
Build number: FRG83
Software version: V10h-FEB-23-2011
One thing that I should mention is that he deleted all data and apps that he had installed after flashing the custom ROM (or probably he just reflashed the custom ROM prior to giving me the phone), so there's no app for controlling CPU clock, Terminal, BusyBox, etc (I know I'll have to install those from the Market).
My specific questions are this:
1.- Should I have any special considerations on my learning process (with the tutorials and guides) since I'm not starting with a stock phone as most other users?. I want to get to the point of installing/testing other ROMS (it seems that the one on the phone is not one of the most populars around here)
2.- I've read some horror stories around most forums regarding the infamous "radio.img" file and how you can damage your phone data connection if you mess around with that file, but on the guides around here I don't see much mentions of that file. How can I prevent messing around with it?. Is that file part of the custom ROMs or what?. I should mention that my cell operator here in Venezuela is "Digitel", and they operate on the 900 Mhz band for GSM and 3G UMTS/HSDPA service (the other 2 operators here use 850 Mhz for 3G).
Thanks in advance for your advice
U don't need to be horrified with that radio image coz in our phone Ive never seen any update for that so basically u never need to mess with it.. go ahead and flash a gb rom maybe void.. with Franco's kernel.. and follow the steps provided in the respective threads..

I wouldn't be concerned about the lack of default apps. You can get them pretty much everywhere here on the forums. Also, Light is not exactly the greatest rom available for the Optimus. I would highly recommend flashing Mik's CM7, but if you'd rather stick with something closer to stock then use Megatron.
Megatron was my first ROM, I ran it for several months. Then I switched to Void for a while, and then when Void was discontinued I waited til Miks CM7 was out of Alpha status and flashed it. Haven't gone back since.
Thanks for your replies... I was under the impression that the "radio.img" file had something to do with the specific radio frequencies that your operator uses for 3G, so if let's say your operator is 3G-900 Mhz and you flash a "radio.img" for an operator that's 3G-850 Mhz, then your phone will not connect to 3G anymore. My doubt is that I don't know if that infamous file can be accidentally flashed when you're installing new ROMS, or if that file is a different story and flashing ROMs does not mess with that file.
I just don't want to be stupid and start flashing ROMs without the proper precautions to avoid bricking my phone.
Hi guys... I got a response from a guy on another forum who told me that the precaution that I need to take is to always check the content of the .zip file of the ROM that I want to flash (looking inside without unzipping) and just confirm that there is no "radio.img" inside the zip. If the file is not there then I'm good to go. Is that right??
Now I need to move on into installing a Custom Recovery (he sold me the phone already rooted but with no custom recovery installed). AmonRA or ClockWorkMod??
Since you say the phone already runs a custom rom then that means you *may* have custom recovery if the guy hasn't removed it. As for the radio.img, no roms for the p500 mess with it.

clockworkmod ...you can use rom manager (download from market) to install it......and try void# forever
You're definitely right on that mihir287... now that I'm understanding things a bit more it makes sense that the phone should have a Custom Recovery already installed since it's running a custom ROM. How can I test/check this??... just by using the key-combo to boot into recovery mode and see what happens?
In the case that he had removed the custom recovery what would happen if I attempt to boot into recovery mode?
If I want to go ahead and install ROM Manager to install ClockWorkMod... will that just replace any previous custom recovery (if it existed) and give me the new one?
(Sorry if I'm asking too many stupid questions )
There are no stupid questions as this is a unique case
Yes just turn off the phone and press home+vol down+power. Remember to keep this pressed till the phone boots onto recovery, or if there is no recovery the phone will boot normally.
If the guy has removed the recovery (i.e replaced it with stock recovery) then this combo will do a 'hard reset', which I think removes all apps so make sure to take a backup using titanium first.
And yes if you use rom manager and flash the recovery then it will replace any recovery you have. So I would say just use rom manager and flash recovery because if you already have recovery or not this method will flash you CWM recovery. Make sure to reboot once before using rom manager.

Hello, relative n00b here but I'm trying to absorb as much as I possibly can...I do have a few questions that I haven't been able to quite find the answer to.
1.) Is there a way to backup my phone the way I could with my DIncredible? (full system image...if not, something that I could easily recover to if I don't like a ROM)?
2.) What is the process for installing new ROMs? I have tried P3's pre-rooted GB build but found my battery life to be horrendous (coupled with the fact that I tried installing an incorrect version of an Atrix recovery and had to SBF back to Froyo)
Do I just load up the bootstrap and rename the ROM as update.zip, or is there an easier way to do this?
ANY help is appreciated guys, thanks!
If you're rooted already, load the bootstrap and you can flash through the modified recovery. There's no need to rename anything in that you can navigate to your zip file once in recovery & flash away just like in regular clockworkmod or amonra's recovery.

I'm also a relative noob. I'm pretty sure that P3's pre-rooted GB is the OTA update with no changes other than the fact that it's rooted. I recommend going through the update process and taking the time to reset the phone at each step. Run GB for a while without restoring your old apps and data from a back up and see if your battery life changes. (Assuming of course, that you didn't already try this).
I had really bad battery life after upgrading too. I got excited and did it without resetting the phone properly. I charged my phone to 100%. Then I SBF'd back to Froyo again, made sure to wipe the data and cache, went through set up, flashed P3's GB and wiped again and went through set up again.
Then, I did not recover my apps from a backup. I re-installed them manually from the market and set up my accounts manually. Then I calibrated my battery. After freezing quite a bit of the bloat, my phone is now getting much better battery life and is MUCH faster and smoother.
Ok guys, I have a captivate and I am super familiar with rooting/flashing/kernels/modems, etc... I just got my wife a fascinate and I was wondering if I could use the same method to flash ROM's as I do on the captivate. I already noticed that my jig also works for the fascinate. Here is my method...
1. Put desired ROM on SD card
2. Get into DL mode (Jig)
2. Flash a CWM compatible kernel with odin
3. Boot directly into recovery (wipe date/cache)
4. Install ROM
I hunted for some good videos but it seems the fascinate gets no love on youtube unlike the cappy.
Also I was wondering if someone could recommend a good stable froyo ROM for my wife's phone. She doesn't care about GB or anything like that, just want stability and to be snappy. From a fellow galaxy lover, Thanks in advance.
Actually there is a video on how to root the fascinate on youtube. Thats how I first learned. For froyo rom's I would look into geewiz or powerwashed ed05 1.2, you can flash the no kernal version then flash the stock ed05 kernal if you dont want voodoo. Both very stable daily driver roms per say. Although I am really starting to like this powerwashed eh09 rom by ccompos aswell. The tks kernal really woke the rom up. Only issue I have found is the flashlight app don't work and I thought data was crappy but today its been very good.

You've got it for the most part, you have to Odin cwr, and immediately boot into recovery by holding up, down, power
until you see the 2nd Samsung screen then release the power but continue to hole both volume buttons until you get into recovery, you have to flash a non stock kernel the first time or the factory kernel will over write recovery and you'll have to start over, but most roms lately will contain a kernel so no needed to install the kernel first...unless the OP specifies that it doesn't contain one
You can enter download mode by connecting the USB cable to PC, or wall charger and removing the battery and holding the volume down button until you see the DL screen...the jig for the fascinate is normally for worse case scenarios...so keep it around but hopefully you'll never use it for the fassy!
As long as you follow the directions from the OP for what ROM you decide to run ie: some roms may require a specific recovery to flash properly, or Odin flashing to revert back, or other instructions specific for that ROM...that said I haven't been on a tw based ROM in a while so I don't have a suggestion other than experimentation and reading through posts of a potential ROM choice.
Whichever you run i'm sure your wife will love it, and if not, there are plenty of choices.

Everything went good, but when I go to choose SD from zip it says "can't mount SD card" I cant seem to mount the internal SD either. Does it matter where exactly you put the ROM?
Yes ROM should go on the root of your sd not in a folder But that is mainly for easy finding... Which sd card are you using...capacity/brand?...which ROM are you going to? and which recovery are you using and how did you install recovery

I ended up flashing geewiz because you could fully flash it with odin. Maybe its because my phone isn't activated yet but I'm having some difficulty mounting the phones internal memory. I cant get past the screen where you first program the phone. I have a kingston 4gb card. I tried powerwashed and followed his instructions perfectly but I think I need to get the phone activated so I can actually tinker with the OS.
Hi Comm
I am new to SG-A and Android itself. As far as i can say from using this phone for one month now is:
- It is fast (i don't play games)
- It is practical
- It is just VERY NICE
BUT, there are some negative aspects also:
- Battery runs out very fast (1 - 1,5 days) - WLAN/BT/GPS/GP3/2 are switched on manually only when needed.
- Low internal memory (278 MB)?
So, what do i want to do next?
- I would like to improve Battery life duration, and i hear that other ROMs do safe battery life duration.
- I would like to delete all the Samsung Apps and stuff from the phone
Note: I have tried out an app called "juice defender", but i am far from enthusiastic about it - it switches on and off the 3G network automatically what is very practical, but hangs itself up occasionally.
What have i learned on xda-developers.com yet?
- There are instructions on how to root your mobile, to have admin-privileges
- There are instructions on how to update firmware
- There are different ROM's you can use (like Cyanogen and GingerReal)
And - that there is no BEST ROM, only different ROMs for differents tastes.
What would i like to know from you now?
- Is it for real that other ROMs enhance battery life? (more than like 100%?)
- Would you agree to kick out all Samsung apps? Also to free up some internal memory.
- What ROM would you recommend me? As mentioned, i don't play games. I just need a practical and fast operating system on my phone. I make phone calls, write sms, and occasionally look up information on the Internet Browser. And i would like to enhance battery life somehow.
That Cyanogen ROM sounds promising, but ain't ready to use yet?
Others wrote that the GingerReal ROM is the most used one here for SG-A, so can't be a big mistake to give it a try?
Thank you so much for your recommendations!

Yup. Gingerreal is the most stable. Cyanogenmod roms are still beta so for a new user you may wanna explorer stock based roms and mess with Odin and clockworkmod before going into beta roms. Of course, it's personal preference.
Everything is pretty simple. For Gingerreal, just get a 2.3 update, then get clockworkmod, then flash the rom. Follow instructions in the development threads to the letter, you'll be safe and happy.
I have been using the official 2.3.4 rom with CF-Root, and Link2SD to account for the lack of space, and it works amazingly fast.

In the GingerReal thread there is a link to another thread which has the clockworkmod recovery. download it, power off, boot into stock recovery by holding home while powering up, then install the zip you downloaded. You get clockworkmod then.
You don't need root. After clockworkmod, download the GingerReal zip and install from sd card.
If you wanna use darktremor app2sd then partition your sd card. Google for that.

No don't flash it while on an another firmware, flash the firmware to the version stated or you might end up with a bricked galaxy ace.As stated it has been tested on those firmwares and its safe..

so after i made this mistake.. (noticed my phone had a at&t bootscreen an wouldn't load) I went forth an flashed stock firmware avail for aiotools for the vibrant an then installed the stock froyo bootloader
I'm hoping everything is right in its place well except once i get cm9 flashed it boots up an shows a EU error so i freak yank the battery an odin this phone back into the stoneage an well... surprisingly.... my internal memory is 100% there O.O
anyways current issue is not being able to get cm7 to install though i'm probably missing something due to being tired anyways..

Well, when you say you are not able to get CM7 to install, what exactly is it doing?
Are you getting thrown into a bootloop (caused by CWR mismatch and pretty common)? If so, pull battery and boot into recovery and re-flash CM7 over itself again. No wipe. Then reboot.
You may have to flash a different kernel, like glitch or something like that. But try the above first. Should work for you. Does it still say ATT when you boot up?
Lucky for you, everything is good, but if you want to flash a GB or higher ROM, i would suggest you flash the bootloaders in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117990
After that just flash CM9, and you *should* be good, if not, try flashing it again with wiping data, cache, and dalvik cache. I guarantee that will work.
I ended up having to format both SD cards an retrying install custom rom via aio tool an with luck was able to get cm7 installed then cm10 an i dno't have the ime error everyone else seams to have . I did before this flash the gb bootloader over this cause it was the only thing that managed to remove the at&t splash screen before the kernal.
Lesson I learned....
remember that the vibrant you use aio tool not a premade pack >.<
an ya i do own both phones so this does complicate things now an then <,<
I also have both devices. Set up two different folders on your pc, one marked i897 and the other t959. I also add i897 or t959 to any files that could possibly get mixed up in Odin.
Its peanut butter jelly(bean) time...
