Between 2:10 and 2:25.
When I first heard about a glasses free 3d display I was pumped for a real 3D usage experience. Especially when considering the widget animations and now 3D carousel screen transitions in sense 3.0.
In the video above, precisely at 2:22, the HTC rep confirms that not even the new weather animations will have a 3d effect.
I for one am bitterly disappointed, I could care less about filming my girlfriends tits in 3d, or posting pics on Facebook so I can be boring in 3 dimensions to the 7 people worldwide that can actually view 3d content on their monitors.
I also can care less about mobile gaming, and will never spend a penny paying some company for 3d movies... although I might pirate them come to think of it.
So besides recording some 3d porn, I cant see a single use for this 3D screen...
Realistically speaking, what are the odds of a UI update, or a modded version coming to fruition? Will the 3D platform mature anytime soon? Or should I grab the superior (arguably) SGS 2 and revisit 3d in 2 years when content developers are taking it seriously?
If green hornet 3d is what I have to look forward to then they can keep it.
Please add your thoughts/rumors/reports.
Well said if you ask me

They said in March when they revealed it that the UI would not be 3D, don't know why this comes as a shock to you now.
Plenty of Movies/Mobile Games will be more than enough 3D for you to handle. You'll be glad the UI is not in 3D anyway, it gets strenuous on the eyes. Its an effect that you're not supposed to be exposed to all hours of the day.

I was aware. That didn't preclude the possibility of incorporating 3d elements here and there. Furthermore, I'd like to know if anyone has heard anything about this being expanded.
Are there any tools in existence for creating custom content to build into a ROM, how feasible would that be etc.
The 3d effect only works in landscape. So a ui based around portrait use has no chance of working in 3d no matter who takes up the challenge.
Btw, I'd love to be proven wrong. I hoped the whole experience could be 3d.
Personally I don't really care ..the 3d to me is an added bonus ..I'm buying for the powerful specs and since Sprint gave me. Free upgrade I'm all for it..
Who cares whether you like the 3d or not, don't use it. It is an added bonus that you are obviously not paying for as the device is $199 after upgrade.
It would be exactly the same price if they removed the 3d feature so why do people really care! It is nit like HTC skimped somewhere else. For the people who say the 5mp camera, please do your research about mp's before making the stupid comment like many others keep making about it being a downgrade.
The EVO's 8mp camera blows and if they took the same EVO camera and made it 15mp's it would still blow, just larger!
when i first heard about glass-free 3D technology on mobile phones, i couldn't be more excited... waiting for the day i get my hands on an evo3D
and some time later, i heard news about samsung not making 3D phones, saying they don't see potential in making the devices... and then i was growing a bit skeptical...but not stirred (cuz samsung ain't exactly my cup of tea anyways)
today.. i went and tried a LG optimus 3D... and you know what? to my surprise... it's crap, pure marketing gimmick, it's like them 3D stickers, but with motion pictures, i am sorely disappointed in this technology and i imagine the evo3D would have similar affects.... now.... i'm planning to skip everything mobile 3D...
I could care less about the 3D as well. What makes this phone so great, is the phone itself. This is the best phone Sprint has had since the EVO which is why I think most people are excited about the phone. I am looking forward to seeing what Devs can do with this horsepower.
I will be interested to see if 3D apps start coming out over the next year. It looks like HTC is going let Devs produce apps made specifically for Sense and that might include 3D stuff. Right now there is very little too be that excited about in regards to 3D - but there is a lot of potential for some pretty cool stuff.
If this phone didn't have all of the other specs and all it had going for it was 3D then this phone probably goes the way of the Echo (dual-screen phone) but the amazing specs along with 3D is creating a lot of excitement.

Exactly, if HTC had not added the 3d and called this new device the EVO 2, I would bet that it would be exactly the same phone we are getting now minus the 3d. It would be the Sprint version of the Sensation.
I don't understand why people don't get.
Even if you don't like the 3D display, being able to take 3D pictures and video is pretty amazing on a phone that's $199. 3DTVs are still growing in market share, they're not going away. I myself have a pretty nice one, and the EVO 3D is coming out the day before my Florida vacation. Really looking forward to getting some nifty 3D videos.
Besides, they could be like every other manufacturer and come out with the "EVO 2" with just updated specs. The 3D functionality is a really awesome throw-in if you ask me.

lol just kidding

If there was a bigger market share of 3d monitors/TV's I'd already be interviewing models.
Don't even care about the 3d...its a fun little extra I am curious to play with, but, the big gimmicks on both evos are the last reasons I an getting them.

I agree with everyone who wants the phone for its specs rather than for the 3D. For those who are surprised the 3D is not as good as theaters then anything I say to you, you wouldn't understand cause your just to damn stupid. (No need to say my grammur is wrong anywhere cause I dont give a **** and I add this cause whenever someone says someones stupid or retarded someone always says...its then not than, who's stupid now) The phone is gonna be sick and it has amazing potential to be even more bad ass than it is. 3D games.....fun. 3D movies......showoff. 3D pictures and videos........can't tell me you wouldn't have some fun with it. But with all the 3D effects gone, the phone is still equal to or greater that Samsung.
To actually address the wasted potential argument, I think we're all on these forums because we individually feel like every phone has potential beyond the stock versions.
As far as wasted is concerned, you can't really say it's wasted if there's no proven way to efficiently better it. I haven't really looked around, but I don't think there are many phones that are using the potential of 3D tech in a better way. Granted, you could say that every 3D device that will hit the market in a similar time frame may be wasting potential, i'm not sure anyone knows of a proven way to better it at this time.
3D everything would be great, especially if the 2D/3D switch could turn it off/on on the whole phone. but i don't think the tech is there yet.
personally, i'll be getting it because it's the best device for me, even without the 3D feature.

It's not about the quality, it's about the pervasiveness of the effect creating an experience vs. a little periphery functionality. I was hoping for 3D Sense 3.0 immersion, even to a slight degree.
Also can you please refrain from cursing out imaginary people in this thread? I'm hoping that some useful news, rumors, development info, and hands-on experiences will be posted here.
So please try to keep it Highbrow. (which 3D porn is)

Gizmodo has hardly anything nice to say about the evo 3d....i don't really care I'll be picking mine up on launch day anyway, but I just thought I would share with everyone else.
I noticed that, it's like everyone wants to complain about the 3d being ****ty while turning a blind eye to the raw power that is Evo 3D! You don't have to use 3d people!

The problem is that this is the first 3d phone. They aren't going to rate it that well. You can read the bias in some of the reviews and tell that they're overdoing it.
No the problem is Gizmodo are one of the biggest group of iPhone fanboys. Though I'm sure the newness of 3d isn't going to instantly wow anyone (until its on an iphone and its called innovation)
Very happy EVO 4G owner, but now after all these reviews, for sure waiting on the Sprint Galaxy S2 coming out end of July / early August, then will decide.
One of my beefs with the EVO-3D, is the gimmicky "3D" feature. I can give two ****s about 3D on my phone, would rather have seen HTC spent more development time in making it a thinner phone, while improving other features. And including the Green Hornet in 3D, and Spider Man 3D, who ****ing cares about that bull****, is that truly a selling point ? To who ?
I think HTC and Sprint dropped the ball a little here, they should have just made the EVO-2, and made it super bad ass specs to destroy the Galaxy S2, and should have tossed that "3D" idea in the trash for now.
Proud owner of my EVO 4G, but crying a little on the inside after reading lots of these reviews today.
Its funny how so many people here at xda have stated they could care less about 3D and would buy the phone without those capabilities while at the same time, the 3D feature is a HUGE focus point for reviewers. I could care less about the 3D, it will be fun to play with I'm sure, but its not a major concern for me in my decision to buy or not buy this phone.

The 3d will be neat to mess with and see if development can make it better.. but even with bad reviews, I've never not seen a phone get better then it is at stock out of the box after groups like Cyanogen get their versions of Android on the phone.. I'm not stressing out, I will be waving to T-Mobile next Friday.

Most [H]ardcore geeks I know, don't want the EVO-3D for the "3D", they want is for being more of the EVO-2, or a next gen EVO, with double the spec's as the original and Sense 3.0
I wish reviewers, would look at the EVO-3D that way, step back away from the "3D" aspects of the phone, and just review based on much improved battery life...the cool updated Sense 3.0...and faster hardware with dual cores, more memory and RAM...and the higher res screen...Those updates are very worthy of a high review in my opinion.
The phone is a beast. 3D is cool I'll be happy to have it. 95% of reviews are b.s. buy what u want not what some guy u don't know says.

I just don't understand what spec isn't up to the highest level. I mean Yeh could use more internal memory but not a big deal with apps2sd. Camera its already proven 8,5 or 1.47838 doesn't matter as much as sensor ala iPhone. So people who says shouldn't have focused on 3d what spec would u raised the bar on and no saying quad core don't work tablets aren't even there.

3D is not important to me. I mean, I'll probably use it in the first month or so, but then I'll probably forget about it. That being said, I don't think it would be fair for any reviewer to disregard the 3D, as this phone is going to be the "trendsetter" for the niche. Just like the OG Evo was the trendsetter for large screens and kickstands.
I do believe, however, that the 3D feature should not be given as much weight during these reviews.
They did mention that it's FAST. But 3D hurt guy's eyes. Some people are more sensitive to these things than others. What I am after, is a solid phone and new Sense. (Sorry AOSP crowd, I like my pig with a professional makeup on)
I think all the reviews and people wanting the phone need to ask themselves would you buy this phone if there was no 3d?
I know I would buy it just because of the specs and sense update.... This is a definite upgrade from my og evo
The 3d is just icing on the cake....
And the whole experience of the phone isn't 3d.. Only 3d movies videos and pictures will be in 3d... Your normal day to day use of the phone (text, email, etc) isn't going to be in 3d...
And as someone else pointed out... As soon as an "i" whatever comes with 3d it will then be accepted...
Sent from my PC36100
$5 bucks says that if the phone did not have the 3D feature, or the 3D feature was not the headlining feature, it would have had better reviews across the board for all websites that examined the phone.
I understand people don't like the idea of 3D being "crammed" down their throats, but it's not like the phone is more expensive than lets say the Sensation. In fact it's cheaper.
Overall, its a huge spec bump (understatement) compared to the original evo.

Exactly, well said! You remove the 3D which will have limited use I don't care who you are. This thing will be insane. I'm a sense fan, so I'm looking forward to 3.0. Like what you like, but you remove the bloated monkey from this phonethis phone and it's going to be a while before another phone comes out that would be as fast or buttery smooth as this phone would be.
* this post was not intended to start the "Oh yeah the Photon.. Blah blah." Or "Well the GSII.. Blah blah blah"... So please lets not start it I can view that crap on any number of also non related threads around here.
The only one thing I don't get is people only concern themselves over the 3D but when it comes to its power they just say its fast. They even go so far as to say it never lags even slightly. But they all hate on the 3D so to me this phone is awesome to still get a 7/10 or 8/10 cause remove the 3D and those are all 9/10 or 10/10. I do want the 3D because I will have fun with it, but It is not the reason I am buying the EVO. Its the community and the specs and 'I' like the design as well. I just hope it doesn't bother my already F'ed up eyes.
I like how they call it a "Lightning Review" as in, "We don't give two ****s about this unless it says "Apple" on the back, so he's what our 5 min with the device looked like"
As you know our phone uses the Adreno 220 in the Snapdragon 3 processor. Here are the real benchmarks not that quadrant crap.

May favorite link below has several true test and compares all dual core chips:

Also its the same chip though it say 1.5ghz don't know why htc lowered it but once we get root I'm sure we will clock it right back up.
Nice. Everyone keep kissing Tegras ass like it's king of the hill. It's nice to see some benches and a good article.
Thanks.

Love the second article. Really shows what power lays under to hood in this phone. I have been saying all along that this phone is possibly the most powerful phone out....but everyone else always says yes but look at SGSII quadrant!
For quadrant to be trusted it needs a mayor overhaul. And benchmarks are dor the e-penis bragging. Its all about RL performance. Anyways those results looks promising for us!.

'faster' at this point it the development of the mobile gpu space is kind of a weird statement.
I'm waiting to see who cleans up in mobile gaming, because historically Microsoft has been the company that figured it out (directx). Dx allowed ATI/NVIDIA to have pretty deep systematic differences in execution strategy, but with the same end calculus.
Wouldnt be surprised if it ends the same way honestly. Google needs to roid out their gaming APIs so game devs don't have to spend more of their time in multi-device debug mode.

I found it interesting that the iPhone 3GS beat out the iPhone 4. Not sure if the testing is all that accurate. But I don't need stats and benchmarks to tell me that my EVO 3D is faster than the G2x or the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (after owning both).
I think HTC reduced the chip speed in favor of battery life.

Iphone4's score was due to the retina display. You know how some people claim that the display should not effect the score of the device in benchmarks, hen concerning the 3vo? Well the iphone4 seems to demonstrate otherwise. We all know that the iphone4 is an impressive gaming device.

I can't tell you exactly what it is but it's definitely GPU related. I've heard it many times about video games. Supposedly, if a game is not vsynced properly, it causes screen tear during the game. That's as much as I know
V SYNC (vertical sync) limits the framerate to match the display, so if your display will only do 60fps it will limit it to that

Yeah, I forgot about the iPhone 4's screen resolution. I have the iPad 2 and I am amazed buy it's gaming capabilities. I tried many Droid tabs but my $500 seemed happiest with the iPad 2. Almost every benchmark will favor one chip or the other. None of them are truly unbiased.
As far as the performance of this phone vs my previous ns4g and epic. I'm not disapointed. I rarely if ever encounter any lag on anything in the UI, and everything opens in a snap. I can't complain at all with any UI element performance.
Most games I get to run perform at least as well as my hummingbird powered phones, However I do have issues with random games crashing and not working. Sure, the GPU is more powerful, but if it wont play 1/2 the games then the power is wasted.
I want to clarify that I really enjoy this phone, and the gpu issue is one I will be able to just deal with.

It's not the gpu its the Unity Engine. Check out these links. If you notice also no games lag just a random crash. It's a new gpu sometimes these things happen has nothing to do with its power.

Btw several dev told me Unity is working on it. I was also the one to figure out it was there engine. Most developers use it to do a quick iPhone to android port but they have to pay Unity of course but it makes relatively painless for them to port. But if something goes wrong with the Engine on a device pretty much every game will be affected and developer can't do anything about it because Unity did all the real work so they can't fix the coding.

Is there any way to actually make the GPU render the friggin' UI? Like iOS. I've had an iPhone 3GS in my Hands and it was really smooth.. yes. use ICS... and use updated GPU drivers. i would go on to tell you to use sense 4, but for the sake of your ease, stick with 3.6.
in this order... flash ICS w/ 3.6sense, flash chad's kernel which can be found @ infectedrom.com. flash gpu drivers. then, if you REALLY wanna boost that ****, use zepelinrox's V6 Supercharger (the option of 1000hp) and his Kick-Ass-Kernalizer. Optionally, use his 3g Turbocharger. Those three things of his, are scripts, which you can execute with Script Manager. If you do some reearch on the things I have stated here (this goes for many other users), you will never even remember why the hell Apple came up with the idea to go mobile...

iOS renders the UI so fast because it is only showing pictures. Flip through the pictures in your gallery. That is all that iOS is doing with the homescreens. With Android, it actually renders everything because of the availability of widgets and live wallpapers.

Android UI will never be completely smooth because of the design constraints I discussed at the beginning:
- UI rendering occurs on the main thread of an app
- UI rendering has normal priority
Even with a Galaxy Nexus, or the quad-core EeePad Transformer Prime, there is no way to guarantee a smooth frame rate if these two design constraints remain true. It’s telling that it takes the power of a Galaxy Nexus to approach the smoothness of a three year old iPhone. So why did the Android team design the rendering framework like this?
Work on Android started before the release of the iPhone, and at the time Android was designed to be a competitor to the Blackberry. The original Android prototype wasn’t a touch screen device. Android’s rendering trade-offs make sense for a keyboard and trackball device. When the iPhone came out, the Android team rushed to release a competitor product, but unfortunately it was too late to rewrite the UI framework.
This is the same reason why Windows Mobile 6.5, Blackberry OS, and Symbian have terrible touch screen performance. Like Android, they were not designed to prioritise UI rendering. Since the iPhone’s release, RIM, Microsoft, and Nokia have abandoned their mobile OS’s and started from scratch. Android is the only mobile OS left that existed pre-iPhone.

First off, thank you.
Secondly; why do they keep bringing out 2core, 4core phones with 1gb ram etc. if the ****ing problem is the OS? Can't they rewrite those lines? Like I really don't get it tbh, and ICS' HW or Rom's with "forced GPU rendering" aren't really helping. Google should get its **** together :/

In short, they simply can't rewrite how android handles the UI rendering priority. If they wanted to, they would have had to start with scratch. It isn't as simple as changing a few lines code.
Heck, changing a few lines of code is going to break something else, and then they would have to fix that, and fixing that may break something else. See where I'm going?
I'm no expert, and if anyone is, then please chime in. To my understanding, something like this isn't as delicate as you may think. Everything is running off that particular code on how Android operates the UI rendering priority. Changing the fundamental thing that helps Android operate, would mean everything else would have to follow suit.
Oh, and I forgot to mention HW acceleration does make a difference.

If you want super smooth performance, I would highly suggest mean rom 4.3 with chads latest gingerbread kernel. Then get launcher pro as it is extremely smooth and I prefer it over the stock launcher anyway. I have next to no lag with that combo
Lololololol @ ios being faster...there homescreen is a bunch of pictures moving around..what does it need to render? They don't have widgets lolol

I have an iPod Touch 4th gen and notice lag in that. It is smoother, but much more boring in terms of the ui. Trade offs I guess. But honestly, no matter which rom I run on my EVO 3D, I rarely, but not never, notice lag other than immediately after powering on. Maybe it's just me though.

ignore OP. just a troll appleboy. notice how i have posted suggestions on what to flash. $5 says hes never even seen ICS, nor does he even know about the GPU drivers i told him to search about. Another $5 says he still is on Gingerbread, and no hardware acceleration. my phone s FLUID as water... for example, scrolling through homescreens and dragging down the notification bar, i feel that it moves faster than i touch it... almost like it knows what i want it to do. the graphical part is >~=60FPS. please just ignore OP
Troll or not it's been admitted even by the Android devs that iOS is smoother. Only because it runs a simplistic way. I'm fine with my 3D and prefer the added benefits of Android

What people need to realize is being a douchey Android fanboy is no better than being a stupid apple fanboy.
They both have their ups and downs. iOS is way smoother in terms of UI which I do agree with.

ok just to clarify... i dont give a flying anything what you all think about me, being hostile from the start. no i was not. i gave precise instructions to help, post #2 and post #4. but since those things were ignored, i gathered my perception of the OP. i had a nice writeup for people to get their 3G speeds up to par, but you know what. screw this community. bunch of flame-hards.
and yes, i didn 'almost insultingly' post something... on the second page... get off your high horses... im done with XDA... just a leech now. screw you guys.
I'm going back to iphone.
This thing force closes way too much.... I know rooting and custom ROM can address some of it but I feel iphone is still optimized better than android. OK maybe I don't know but I just never had any issues with their hardware or apps.
Yeah I guess I'm not the type of person who really appreciates customization capability. I realized ONLY thing I like about this particular android is the large screen.
Sorry this is just a bad morning and my android is acting all ****ed up. Happens way too often.
If you are new to Android coming from the iPhone then you'll feel that way for a bit. I did miss my iPhone but once these awesome devs clear up some bugs you'll be really happy....if you like customizing. I couldn't stand iTunes so once I got around the noobness point, Android is so much nicer. The iPhone is more for people that just want to push an icon like my wife and kids.

Yea if you are stock you shouldn't have too many problems. The beauty of the xda forum is you can tell us your problem and people get together to help solve it. Id rather use xda than talk to a genius any day.

Most likely a bad device.
I have had mine since mid December...all stock, only updates via Kies.
It's been more stable than 2.2.2 on my Dell Streak.
As for a 5" iPhone, well, Jobs is gone so anything is possible.
You watch though...if Apple comes out with a screen anywhere near the
size of 5", the iphone fanbois will trumpet it out that it is an innovation and
the best thing in the world LOL.
lol you do realize stuff crashes consistantly on the iphone it just doesnt tell you right?
Force Closes are from improperly written apps. this happens, there are so many varients in the Android world it is hard to keep up with the changes.
Apple has a set screen size depending on the device, Android has many different screen sizes.
If you like to DUMB down then go back to the iPhone.

First I was gonna tell you "see ya", but I guess I'll say that I have no, not one, force close and my device is closer to me than wrist watch or glasses... My device functions this way because I read about everyone else problems and solutions and either avoid the base situation, or utilize the communities experiences for the solution... Our Android family bought our grandfather an iPhone because of his age... Lmao. Does that tell you anything? If you must go then thanks for stopping by, but if you can stay, we will do our level best to match your enthusiasm and drive...

There was actually a study published a few months ago that showed that major iPhone apps actually crash more often than their Android counterparts; however, since the iPhone doesn't display a message to the user when that happens, and it doesn't give the users an option to report the crash, most iPhone users perceive fewer crashes. (In other words, they simply think that they must have hit the Home or Close buttons since all the iPhone does is crash back to their homescreens).
The second theory on why this is the case is that it's much easier and faster to release app updates on Android markets. Android devs can easily roll out responsive updates while iPhone devs have to submit every single update to Apple's ridiculous approval process.

The truth will set you free.
I've been running the I717 since day one and I've gotten exactly 1 FC from a weird app I downloaded. once I deleted it I was good. Try doing a factory reset and start fresh. download apps that have 4 or more stars. My phone has been a champ from day one with all the crap I throw at it (not even screen slowdowns like some are reporting). If you don't like it, you don't like it, there's no harm in that. All I know is my Ipod frustrates me something fierce when I use it so irritations go both ways. Hope you stick around, the stock ICS should be wandering through in the next couple of months. If you don't want to wait, I hear there's awesome Roms of ICS already. check it out.
I'm going back to iPhone as soon as someone trades me back on CL
What I've had from start to finish? Tilt, Touch Pro 2, G1, BB 8120, BB FLIP, G1, 3GS, Vibrant, EVO, Hero, Epic, EVO, Nexus S, the sprint WP7 can't recall name, EVO, Epic, EVO, EVO3D, 4S Sprint, 4S AT&T, Note AT&T.
I am the most unbiased person possible.
I switched from the iPhone back to Android because the screen was annoying for Draw Something, the edges on the phone are somewhat sharp & annoyed me in long typing sessions, no LTE.
What I've experienced on the Note, & why I said when I went back to the iPhone after the EVO3D that I would never go back to Android: LAG.
What good is customization if everything lags. What's the point of customization anyway? It's not like a computer that has incredible battery life & the customization is actually useful. It's just pretty widgets & UI mods.
I'm also shocked at how many ads are in the free apps compared to years ago.
Anyway, I'll go back to my sound app ecosystem with no lag. On top of that, the apps seem to run a lot smoother & take advantage of the A5 dual core vs the dual core in the Note.
+ I've spent way too much $$ on apps for iOS LOL. Sure I could get some for free on Android, but some simply aren't avail. Some I would have to buy again. Unfortunately, they all run better on iOS.
I will miss the s pen functions (and the Sammy cameras always seem better - I am disappointed by the 4S camera), but I'll survive. The only Android I want is the ASUS Padphone or an ASUS tablet (I had the Transformer #1 for a month, oh & of course I've had an iPad in the past, but prefer the Android tablet OS)

In my experience with android devices the major culprit for lag is on screen widgets that update. If you set up your device like ios with nothing but apps you will see no lag. If you use widgets and stuff you might redraw.

Interesting observations. Honestly I see my Ipod lag a whole lot more than my note (or even my streak) with much much fewer apps. I mean I use my ipod for pandora, email and rage comics and running all three at once it lags something fierce. I can do all that with my note plus play temple run and not see a stutter. As for the in app adverts, apple is just as bad, but the funnier thing is, the ration of paid vs free apps in IOS is a lot higher in favor of paid apps than in android, which is probably why you see fewer ads in IOS. One thing I noticed with IOS is most apps, especially the free ones, rarely have over 3 stars, makes me wonder if they're really worth the time... All I know is, between IOS and android, I prefer android hands down, I can customize my UI how I want to, I can have widgets if I'd like and do virtually whatever I want with it. if you want I can talk with my buddy to see if he'll trade his 4S strait across for your note.
