[Q] Multiple batteries and battery stats - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just picked up a spare battery and was curious to hear some opinions on what would affect the battstats the most.
Would the stats and battery drain be less accurate if I were to bump charge multiple times a day, or if I swapped out batteries when needed?
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk

What my girlfriend and I have noticed is at the beginning multi battery straight swaps aren't that bad. Over time though the stats get bad and charge life BLOWS GOATS. Also on another note I purchased an extended battery 3600mAh and that thing sucked horse malarkey! To get it to fully charge we had to use an external charger. when u put it on the phone it rocked at 100% for about 30 minutes then dropped to like 15%, then 5%, then sat at 1% for 16-48 hours straight depending how it was charged. The ongoing low battery notification was just too annoying so we tossed it.
Overall a single battery is your best bet but a secondary battery will get you by in a pinch. That's how her an I both roll now and seem to get much better battery life with a single battery.

[Q] Why do soo many people recommend something soo bad for your battery?

One of the worst things you can do to a lithium battery is discharge it completely. They don't suffer from "memory" yet every time someone here in the forums complains that they are getting crappy battery life the instruction to discharge and recharge to 100% before clearing stats pops up.
For those who are interested here is an article that explains in detail.

My main question- Is there some function in android that looks at the maximum depth of discharge level of the battery or is it that most people don't understand the characteristics of L-ion and confuse them with those of Ni-Mh or Ni-Cad?
I want to know because if I need to completely discharge to get better perfomance, despite the reduction in charge cycle lifetime, I will do it but only infrequently.
I've only let my battery discharge completely once, and it wasn't on purpose. From the posts I see here I think I get above average battery life. About 18 hours miui before I go for the charger and on 2.2 roms I'd get 20 hours and still have 40% or so to go. So no I don't think completely discharging your battery does anything for battery life.
Sent from my T959 using XDA App
I have never run mine down completely. Gotten it to about 6% but that was because I was fighting ROM flashing problems. I usually call 25-30% enough for me and plug in then. I am also getting 30 hours out of my 2.2 with a good deal of use. I used to have a Motorola and their batteries are total crap. If you EVER let it get down below 10%, it took some real work for it to charge correctly and boot up. Even as much as a hardware mod where I have had to cut the wires on a USB charge cord and charge it rigged up with the wires pressed against the battery and prongs in the phone. Very dangerous, but worked for a last resort.
Discharging the battery is not for the sake of the battery, but more so for the ROMs data and how it acquires the battstats usage. I only run it up and down and clear stats when flashing a new ROM, but I do use my phone moderate to heavy daily and have had great success in battery life the way I calibrate it.
The solution I think is to use a larger capacity battery and regulate it to narrower window of operation never fully charging or discharging.
The fastest killer though seems to be heat.
I have read several times that your phone does not fully discharge the battery...that there is still a minimal amount of charge, not enough for the phone to opperate but enough to not damage the battery when it shuts down
Maybe the batterystats file can be saved after being calibrated once and then restored after every wipe oor flash.. that would save some time aabd according to you guys, batt life too
Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.
I've only ever calibrated my a few times and only after flashing a new rom. I never run my battery down after resetting the stats. I just use my phone as I normally do. My understanding of calibration is that it's not about squeezing more life out of the battery despite what most people think but of getting a more accurate measurement of the battery's actual charge. Also while it's true that the phone will shut of before the battery is completely discharged damaging the battery, allowing the battery charge to drop that low shortens your battery's life and decreases the amount of charge your battery can hold.
What gets me is I also read somewhere that for optimum battery life you should keep your battery level somewhere between 70%-40%. Of course that doesn't stop me from charging my phone to 100% everyday. I don't remember where I found that article but I'll post a link if I can find it again.
The reason this bad advice about completely discharging your battery persists is probably the same reason people keep recommending automatic task killers.

Discharging the Battery & Running the Battery Dead is 2 Different things!
We recommend running the battery dead ( Phone Shuts Off ) & recharging while off to train the Android OS from Full > Empty..
Running the Phone until Dead is not Going to hurt the Battery in anyways shape or form despite what you may think or read!
The Reason is, the battery is never fully Discharge & still holds Voltage.. The Calculations of Charged / Dead is at the Kernel Level, so even when dead it still has a 3.4v still or roughly..
As long as the kernel isn't tampered with, discharging the battery via the Phone will never hurt the battery period!
Now, Based on the link you posted you would have to run the battery down past the safe discharge point.. Via some other means of killing the battery, other than using the Phone.
To help ease your mind, Remember this:
~ Charge levels is controlled by the kernel
~ Even when Phone powers off, there is still plenty of charge in the Phone's Battery
~ Battery is never Fully charged, as this also hurts lithium batteries
Roughly every Android kernel does not let lithium battery get below 3.4v and at most 96% charged.
Hope this helps,
~Eugene
If you are still concerned wait until your phone turns off and stick your battery on a meter. You will see there is still power left in it...
My original battery that came with the phone got great life, then couple of months later it was discharging in like 2-4 hrs(froyo), so I called, they sent another one free...5-6 months later that one started doing it as well, so I pulled out the old one from the drawer, it powered on at like 85% ! and I was getting crazy ass life out of it on miui over 30 hrs one time...now that one is acting up again, so I'm going to try to swap again..lol...maybe there's something to not using them for a while...
I've used diff roms and combinations of draining/recharging...calibrating, not calibrating...it's always different results..honestly I don't think there's any rhyme or reason to it other than the fact that many vibrants have diff hardware and there will always be some weird quirk on a per user basis...
As far as hurting it by draining it all the way, I hardly think that's the case seeing as with both batteries I've always let it run down...not on purpose but there has been many many times I've plugged in at 1% or had to power back on because it died...charged it up and got 20-30hrs no prob..usually issues come up when flashing a new rom...
i think it all comes down to luck of the draw. ive had my vibrant since launch day, and i still manage great battery life. my battery is actually stamped 7-02-2010. every 2 weeks or so ill drain the battery completely, turn it back on and allow itself to die again, and finally allow it to fully charge overnight or 4 hours. i usually get a good 7-8 hours of constant use on cm7, or over 24hours if let on standby.
im still debating if i want to grab an epic 4g touch battery as well to increase it even more.

in there they tested in a store since the epic 4g touch battery fit into a regular epic 4g, if it would fit into a vibrant. only thing is you have to put the battery in facing inside, and it fits and works 100%

Battery Life

What is everyone's battery life on this phone? 55 minutes in with light use I'm down to 75%
My phone is rooted so not sure if that matters, waiting on someone to allow LTE to be switched off
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
I haven't done any objective tests (too busy playing with it) but mine has been great. I'm rooted and overclocked. I've enabled the lowest power stepping, my battery power has been phenomenonal and getting better. Inverted apps, dark themes, great deep idle and a massive stock battery I fully expect the g -note to shape up as a new standard in phone battery life.
You've must have something, a background service, something like that, and it is chewing up your electrons. Have you checked your battery stats? If you can't find a power thief return it, or at least exchange the battery. With millions of batteries there has got to be a few bad ones. Until then, can you post a battery usage graph?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
I've always found it wise to run the battery to full charge/complete discharge a time or two to calibrate the battery
When I got my skyrocket new, I drained the battery down to 20% in 5 hours, then it took another 5 hours to drain that. Afterwards, the battery "appeared" to last longer. Today is my "kill the battery" day.
I've always read the Li-Ion batteries work best at 40% capacity. Not sure why, but I would think that the meter is highly inaccurate at the upper and lower ends of the readings.

Razr Maxx Battery Life

Had my Razr Maxx for two days and was wondering if this was good battery life.
Battery is at 70 per Battery Indicator Pro.
16 hours on battery - took off charger when I got up at 4:30 am.
Cell stand by 29% - time on 16 hours - no signal 20%.
Display 18% - 1 hr 50 mins.
Voice Calls 15% - 19 mins.
Android OS 13% - 30 mins.
Phone Idle 7% - 15 hrs.
Android System 6% - 11 mins.
Bluetooth was on 11.5 hrs.
Am running Galaxy Live Wallpaper.
Used Fresh Network when I got to work at 6 am.
CDMA only.
No GPS.
Had sim card removed while playing with another phone for an hour.
Had WiFi on for an hour.
Have a Smart Action to disable cellular data setup.
Am also syncing two gmail accounts.
If you're at 70% with 16 hours that should tell you its good.

That's insanely good. I'm such a heavy user my battery barely makes it through the day.
I got my Razr MAXX yesterday, fully charged it overnight. Woke up at 6am, battery was at 100%. It's 3:00pm now, and the battery is at 50%. Been using the phone quite a bit today, but don't think this is what I paid $300 for! Plaese tell me if I'm wrong...

The reason you are having less than expected battery life is because the battery isn't conditioned yet. Best way to do it is to charge it to 100% before using the first time. Then you discharge it as much as possible by using the flashlight all the time, turn on Bluetooth and GPS, wifi, etc. Then completely charge it. Do this for about a week and your battery life should get quite a bit better. Had to do it with both my stock battery and extended one for my Epic 4G Touch. Made all the difference in the world. The batteries do not come pre-conditioned from the manufacturer. Your mileage may vary though...
-Lil'Ross88-
Actually don't do the above it doesn't help and if you do it too much you will hurt the battery. Also new Li-Ion batteries are conditioned when you get them. Keep it charged, keep the phone cool never hot, and never let the battery stay completely discharged.

If that is the case with Li-Ion batteries, then why did the manufacture say to do that as part of the conditioning process? Not meaning to be rude about it but conditioning a battery, Li-Ion or not, Is good for people that use the hell out of their phones. Same goes with car batteries. I aint saying to do it all the time with a cell phone but the first week aint going to mess it up. It is actually better on Li-Ion batteries to do complete cycles than partial. Do your research for yourself and see.
Also, my co-worker had an E4GT, with an extended battery like mine. I did the conditioning process that I described and that was recommended by the battery's MFG. My battery lasted almost TWO days. His would last about 18 hours off the charger. Proof is in the pudding.
Guys.. keep using your phone and let it cycle through normal charges for about a week. You should have better battery life. Android takes a while to learn where to stop your battery, and it often will undercharge it during the first few cycles.
I have two Traxxas R/C trucks. And they use Lithium Ion batteries. It is known that you never let them heat up excessively. Reason is heat will kill the life expectancy of lithium in a heart beat. Most of the time cutting its charge capacity in half. The same goes for letting it die. If the battery does not have a protection circuit built into the battery or on the phone it self and the battery drops below 3.2 volts per cell. Then the life will be cut. Lithium is a very touchy chemistry. In all of its current forms it needs to be handled and maintained properly.

Had the Maxx for a week now and I love it! Been off the charger for 15 hrs with over 2 hrs screen on and 2 hrs 20 min talk time, light browsing, and a little ebay app, still have 46%. I had a rezound with the extended battery and I got similar battery life. Seems like it's doing better every day.
I purposely left my maxx off the charger last night. This morning at 6:15 it was at 17% battery life left. This is way better than my dinc with the extended 2150 battery. I would have already charged it a couple times with the same amount of usage.

Sorry, not to be a jerk but all the information in your posts is completely inaccurate. Each battery type differs so you cannot generalize and compare it to a car battery. Nowhere has it ever been said by any cellular phone manufacturer that the battery requires any conditioning. In fact, continuously discharging the battery completely, shortens its life span.
Lithium-ion batteries actually prefer partial charge/discharges not complete discharges as this damages the battery as I stated above. Also, you should never run the LED light for long periods of time as that can cause damage to the LED and possibly the phone. Any improvement you may perceive from your practices IS likely due to the fact that the meter may have required a few charge cycles to become more accurate. However, complete charge cycles do not require the battery to be completely discharged.
Again this is not meant to offend you but I feel it's important to not give inaccurate info as incorrect information can potentially cause damage to someones phone in the long term.

While I did see a nominal increase in battery life with Juice Defender, what drove me nuts was the time it took data to "wake up" after unlocking the phone. Eventually, I turned Juice Defender off.
And, like others, the first few days with my Maxx had 2 instances where I awoke to a dead battery. Now, 2 weeks later, charging and discharging is slow and predictable. About 2.5 hours from 5% to fully charged and a couple days of use between charges. No issues to speak of.

[Q] Serendipity 9 SGH-i777 battery issues

I'm very new to rooting and custom ROMs and such and was just able flash the Serendipity 9.4 ROM to my AT&T Galaxy S2. I like it a lot so far, but the battery life seems to be a bit poor
I was on a full charge and did some light internet.browsing for about 24 minutes and discharged 10 percent of my battery already. Is this normal? If not, are there any solutions to this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I would say that should probably drain around 5% of your battery unless you were watching videos or something heavy like that. I would recommend you do a battery recalibration and maybe a charge cycle or two to improve your battery life:
Charge your phone to 100%
Reset Battery Stats (CWM > Advanced > Wipe Battery Stats)
Let it drain to 0%
Charge back up to 100%
You should see battery life improvements.
Thanks! I'll give it a shot and see how it goes.
Resetting battery stats does nothing on the sgs2. There are many posts about this here on xda. Give your device a few charge cycles after a fresh flash...typically you should start seeing decent battery life after about 3 cycles...
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2
When you say to give it a few charge cycles, do you mean fully drain the battery and then fully recharge it, etc? I'm very new to all of this lol. I have 3 batteries that I swap in and out as well, should I just stick to 1 for the time being?
basically use it a couple days. You don't have to let it die and in fact I've heard it's actually not good for the battery to kill it all the way, but to instead partially charge once it reaches a certain level like 20% or something like that. don't know how true that is. Either way, give it a few days.

[q] htc battery acting weird

i am havin HTC AMAZE 4G
when i used to charge it before
phone used to come to 90% from a full in approximately 1 hour.
now it comes very quickly like 10-15 minutes
& also the major problem is my phone gets switched off at any battery percentage like 65% & when it gets restarted it comes to around 8% or sometimes even 4%.
if i pull out battery again restart the phone then sometimes it comes to around 30% back or any random increase in battery or sometimes even decreases to 4% & then the battery gets drained in 5 minutes & i have charge it again
battery takes more time to even charge
sometimes using DATA & charging it even takes 10 hours to charge
i dont know what is the problem
i have been thinking about battery problems
but i googled & in some blogs it shows as circuit problems too
the problem is i am living in INDIA
this phone is not official here so the service center guy wont touch it & i dont want to waste money on the battery if it isnt the problem
USING HTC ICS OFFICIAL ROM
NOW BATTERY LASTS with normal data on maximum 4 hours
help me out guys
thank u
How old is your handset? Battery life decline is normal as it ages. Without being able to inspect and test yours out all I can tell you is the most likely explanation for what you're describing is battery wear.
The original HTC battery that came with my phone only holds 2/3 of the charge it once had when new, which is why I invested in a pair of Anker batteries and an external charging station (I purchased them together in a package on eBay for under $30 US shipped). Having the extra batteries has been an excellent addition. I alternate them every few days to more evenly balance how they are wearing and to prolong the remaining life of my original battery. Plus it's great to have an extra battery to use for those times when I really need my device, but don't have the ability to plug in.
Check out the best battery thread in the Amaze accessory section for more details and comparisons.

You're getting the different results because the batteries aren't calibrated to each phone. If you put your fully charged battery in your father's phone it shows 56%, correct? What happens when you put your father's fully charged battery in your phone? Keep in mind that when switching around the batteries neither with be calibrated to the device, but will instead show a percentage vs the battery that was properly calibrated.
Example: the battery in my phone shows as fully charged, but is worn and no longer charges to the maximum. If I place it in my brother's Evo 3D which uses the same size battery but is newer. It will show as only partially charged because his device is calibrated to his newer stronger battery. Conversely, if I put his newer battery in my phone which has been calibrated to my older worn battery it will appear to be fully or nearly fully charged for a long time before it begins to show it's draining with use.
The only way to properly test your battery would be to either try a known stronger one in yours for several charge - discharge cycles as your phone calibrates to it, or to try your battery in another device for several such cycles. Then you need to compare if there was an improvement in up-time or not. Short of taking it in to be checked on diagnostic equipment it's the best method I can think of.
Good luck!
Thank you very much for the reply
Goin to a local mobile repair guy for a hardware check
Will tell you the results tommorow
Thanks once again
Maybe you just need to wipe battery stats. One trick that works is let it drain completly and let it be drain over night and charge it again keep doing a couple of days it may just get better. But think is just battery problem not hardware related.
My Original HTC battery worked its way down to 2 hours of usable talk time. Eventually, got so bad that it barely charged on anything but a high current wall charger. Technically it was under warranty at the time...
Ordered 2 Anker Batteries w/ charger for $30, and not long after that the charger broke. It quit charging batteries.
I then just stuck with one Anker battery in my phone and the other as backup. The battery I used the most is now down to about 4 hours of life on a full charge. The least used is about 8. I try to keep the worse one charged up as a backup in a pinch and now use the good battery full time.
Just how life goes sometimes...

Yeah that Anker charger is the weak-spot in that 2 battery package deal. The damn thing is flimsy and fragile. I'm so paranoid about breaking it I treat it with kid gloves. The batteries are pretty good though. The package was one of the best investments I made since owning the Amaze. Using indelible marker I labeled them 1 and 2, and rotate their usage with my original HTC (which is easy to distinguish). This way when I'm on the road I always have one fully charged spare handy, one charging at home, and one in my handset.

But When I was using official ICS from T-mobile, I had the same problem, even after wiping. I even faced a funny thing. Percentage of battery in bar was different from percentage shown in lock screen!!!
