[Q] Revolutionary Root for 2.3.4? - HTC EVO 3D

There's no root for it yet right?

for 2.3.4 yes for hboot 1.50 that comes if you ota no. look in development section. you will find links you can update everything except the hboot. which will still leave you s-off and then you can flash either stock 2.3.4 rooted or a custom based off of stock 2.3.4 rooted.

knowledge, if you're completely unrooted and your phone is up to date I may be able to help you out with it. Is there any way you could hop on IRC?

Thanks but its not for me. I don't do OTA's. My friend wants to root and I was going to walk him through the process over facebook. He took the OTA and got bumped up to 2.3.4 with the new hboot I presume.
I've never seen a website so confusing in my life.

Have your friend watch this video on how to root after the OTA:

Just got Evo...do I take the OTA?

I know that the Evo 3D is planned to soon be rooted by AlphaRev. If I take the OTA will I still be able to get S-Off when the root meatod is released?
Take OTA or no?
I wouldn't, I'm still rockin the release day version. I'm sure when rom's are rolling out they will include all the updates and then some.

Alpharev hasn't yet announced which hboots it will work with, but they did say it should work across a number of them. Personally, I would hold off on any OTA until you get full root, just to be safe. It would suck to take the ota and then find out that the method is only for the 1.30 hboot.

Simple answer. No.
If you want to root, NEVER take an OTA. This is rule #1
If you never plan on rooting, you should take the OTA.
I thought I saw somewhere that alparev or unrevoked said that they can s-off all available hboots for the time being

Yes, they did announce that the tool they're developing should work across a bunch of different hboots, however they didn't specify which ones. I like to play things safe, so therefore I still say no OTA's. I am very anti-OTA. Soon enough there will be full root and it won't matter anyways.
Don't worry, the latest OTA (for now) using HBOOT 1.40 has been tested sucessfully.
So this works.
1.13.651.7 is (as I understand it), the latest OTA, and works fine.
Yeah, it's best just to play it safe and never OTA unless it fixes a bug that is absolutely critical. I've never taken one, never will. The phone runs just fine.

Well, there you all have it. Right from the horses mouth. Taking the current OTA is safe. So go ahead and take the OTA if you feel the need to do so.
No OTA's ever!!!!

Question about the latest update from HTC/Sprint and unlock

Hello,
Last week there was an update for the phone which brought it to 2.3.4. Is it unlocked now? Do I still have to do the s-off thing to install new roms?
I'm new to the android mod stuff so don't worry about insulting my knowledge as I have much to learn about android. I've never performed a custom rom install on my android phones (only WM phones).

No its not unlocked and it still has S-On. If you took the update your going to have to use the HTC method of getting S-Off. Unless there's another method that i haven't heard of. This was the first android phone I ever owned and ever rooted and i have to say if was pretty easy after hours of reading over and over the how to root guide . The hardest part of rooting was "finding" a working Parallel Desktop and working version of windows 7 for my brother's Mac from the Internet.

Revolutionary is a tool that was developed by Alpharev and Unrevoked. It will set your phone to S-off (security off). With S-off, your phone is fully unlocked and you have full r/w access to all partitions (you can flash kernels, radios etc). HTC's unlock method does not give you S-off. It 'unlocks' the bootloader, while it remains S-on (security on). That is a half ass unlock. It will still allow you to flash a custom recovery, which you will then be able to use to flash roms. However, as I understand it, you can only write to the system partition. That means you can't flash radios, kernels, etc. You can only flash roms. Basically, HTC's unlock is not a full unlock, you are limited to what you can flash. Revolutionary will give you a full unlock with no restrictions, you can do whatever you want.
Revolutionary isn't updated to work with the latest OTA update yet (hboot 1.5), but it's being worked on. Those guys are really good, and I'd think that they will have their tool updated to work with the latest hboot at some point in the not so far future (speculation). As knowledge suggested, if I were you I would definitely wait for revolutionary to be updated, instead of going with HTC's half assed unlock method.
Thanks for the detailed reply. I have much to learn and appreciate the info! I'm not sure what I'll be looking for - about the only thing I know I want is tethering. If someone can make it less likely to drop calls that would be HUGE.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I could gather, from the Android forums besides researching here. Revolutionary is not doing an update for Hboot 1.50.... But also was said possibly figuring a way to downgrade the hboot. Either way I hope something is done, because I do not want to take HTC unlock method. I was unfortunate n already had the update when I purchased the phone. So Im gonna just sit here and wait..

[09:21] <wake69> will there be an update for the evo 3d 1.5 cdma bootloader?

[09:22] <@IEF> we might figure out a way to downgrade to 1.40 at some point, which we will release then, but don't count on it
so, if you want the ota, flash the rooted rom and firmwaredontunroot, if you want to root without the htc method dont take OTAs once you get hboot version 1.5 you are stuck with the HTC rooting method"

Thanks - so should I give up on waiting for Revolutionary?

NO, They just added support for more devices. A few days ago only EVO 3d & the EU Sensation were supported, but now there are a few more on that list.
I figured.....lol
Honestly, even after reading that. Im still going to hold out to see if an unofficial method comes out. I think its just to early in the game to just throw in the towel, and take HTC unlocking method.
Like knowledge651 recommended, just wait.. and hope for the best, anything is still possible..
I was just curious, if possibly someone else knew more information about the matter.
EVO3D
Could someone explain why the revolutionary method is better than the HTC method? I've never done any thing other than stock as this is my first android so I'd like to understand why some are waiting.
2 reasons, one revolution WORKS, period. Complete s-off and root. Htc...limited unlocking. Two, you need to register serial number with htc.
To all thinking about upgrading to the new ota
Don't take ota.......do not.

1.13.651.1 is the stock ROM that was released with the phone. Consider yourself lucky if you want to root and unlock, because this version you can root, unlock and S-OFF. Don't take the OTA update if you want to root, unlock and S-OFF.

If I am not mistaken you can still unlock through htc and root but you won't be able to get s-off.

In that case, I'm not so worried about it.
I don't need S-OFF on this phone anyway, as you can flash Kernel even with S-ON on this phone.

I don't think this is true anymore - I'm pretty sure the new hboot in the update prevents flashing kernels when s-on htc unlocked.

S-OFF and the 3.14.605.12 OTA

Hi guys.
So I am getting a Rezound on Monday and I plan on doing S-OFF overtop the official ICS OTA.
But I don't want to mess up the phone. Has anybody tried S-OFF with the 3.14.605.12 OTA?
Any replies are appreciated.
Best regards,
Sam

JuopunutBear s off is for the 3.14.605.5 leak, but that leak has the same radios as the ota.
I personally used the s off method while running 3.14.605.10 firmware with no problems so I don't see why the ota version wouldn't work

You truly don't NEED s-off to get most of the roms to work while on the OTA firmware. Although, the phone will come with gingerbread. I say keep s-on/no root for like a week or 2 just so you can work out any kinks if you get a bad one. Also yes at this point, our current s-off procedure cannot really be patched up.
I think it should work with 3.14.605.12 also. I performed s-off being on 3.14.605.10

Do you mean you can't go back S-On? Because yes you can. There's a thread in the dev section about it; it's just a fastboot command ("fastboot writesecureflag 3" or something like that).
Like the others have said, you should be able to S-Off when on the OTA since it has the same radios as the .5 and .10.
Thank you for your replies guys. I appreciate it. Do any of you recommend stock or an ICS rom to flash? I haven't had a HTC since I had a OG Droid Incredible (awesome device) so Ive been out of the loop for a while now. Lol.

No. You misread, It will be Verizon's failure if they attempt to patch up the s-off wire trick. Sorry I give more info than what's needed. For the OTA & S-off is concerned. Yes the current procedures work with the OTA's firmware.
