This is more of a philosophical question and I'm interested in hearing everyone's opinions on this.
I've always rocked my gadgets without a case. I absolutely hated the thought of adding a stupid ugly case and covering up the sexy curves of my new phone...
But for some reason, I went ahead and ordered a ballistic case for my evo3d. I don't know why i felt like it was a good idea...is this the sign of adulthood? Could it be that I am just lamer than my younger care-free self? Why protect something I'll be replacing in a year or two at most. Tell me XDA, why do you embrace this modern day burqa for your gadget?
I never have used them either. This is my first phone I bought one for. I just bought a cheap 3$ eBay cover. It is great so far. I rooted this weekend hand had to pull the battery a few times. I still haven't put the case back on yet. I found I missed the thiness of the phone. I can't decide wether I am putting it back on yet

It depends on your personal taste and how you handle your phone. If you like the textured back and you're careful with your phone, then I would suggest you don't use a case. However, if you are worried about dropping your phone and don't mind a little extra thickness, then you should use the case.
All in all, it comes down to your personal taste. Try it with a case for a while and without it for a while and see what fits your use best

Exactly what this guy said. I love the textured back and would hate any added thickness. (I've tried using bigger batteries on my OG Evo, hated them) I am also extremely careful with my phone and have insurance in case I accidentally drop and break it. That is why I never use a case.
If you don't care about aesthetics, feels, etc. and aren't too careful with your phone, you should definitely get a case.

Yea I would never get an extended battery. I find that it adds wayyyy too much extra thickness. I personally loved how the 3d felt (textured) in my hands but I don't have insurance and against my better judgement, I bought a case from seidio. It has a very nice soft feel but I miss the textured feel.

Seeing from this, If I were you, I would ditch the case.
Hated cases in the past, wouldn't rock them very long or often, but copped a sweet "White Rubberized Hard Phone Cover for HTC EVO 3D Protector Case" off Amazon for under $2 dollars, and its grip and quality are great. It snaps together too, completely encasing the 3VO, and also adding that extra buffer to protect the camera lenses and glass (feels way better holding too w/out cams protruding.) Won't be sporting a naked phone again

I would but I have a clip that I use come some shorts I have don't have pockets xD go figure...and I also don't want the camera lens to scratch. To me, the tradeoffs aren't unbearable so I'm happy with a case I slip it off from time to time just for kicks.

Hi All,
I've been thinking about this and wanted to run it by everyone here to see if it should be moved forward. Looking at the 3D, I think there is a potential market for a replacement back cover for the phone. Think about; the cover shields the entire back, bottom, and sides of the phone. Since this is the case, why can't some aftermarket companies develop a "better" cover?
Something that has better tactile feel for the buttons (an apparent flaw of the current cover) and provides additional protection to the phone and camera lens, without having to add a bulky case on top of it.
I feel a case is necessary with a phone like this; however if something like this came out I would be all over it. I hate to add bulk to an already giant phone. Wearing a suit and having an Evo w/case in your pocket looks like your carrying a brick or Bible.
I think if we can draw enough attention to this, we can get some third party companies interested in development. Obviously, I think it is a good idea; do you?
^
i do believe that i would buy it!
a replacement back cover wouldn't do anything for the buttons as those are on the frame. or do you mean replacement full body housing? that would be cool but they wouldn't be able to sell a lot of them since that project would be too indepth for the average joe.

just a replacement cover with a kickstand would make me happy. im hoplessly attached to the kickstand on my og evo but i keep it naked with no case as i dont like the added bulk. maybe powermat will look into it since they make replacement covers anyhow.
edit: i actually emailed powermat and will update if i hear anything back.
I think a kickstand should totally be doable. I have a contact that is a machinist...maybe I can get a proto done in aluminum and see how that rolls. Now all I need is the damn phone to be delivered !
something rugged ish would be great with an extended batt.
Ballistic HC page is up, enter your email for updates. It looks like the case has more protection for the camera area than the SG.
The optional outer layer looks different from the Evo 4G. It appears to have both camera and kickstand available with the outer layer.

looks good
whats the ETA to availbility?
although i think seido's rugged cases they made for the EVO are the toughest
doesnt look bad for a tough case, are they typically better quality than otterbox?

I know the original Evo 4G Otterbox Defender case was not made at the same factory as the iPhone cases. Thus, there was a seriously lower level of quality. However, regardless of variables, I have found Ballistic cases to be far sturdier than Otterbox. The top of the line Otterbox Defender can barely be compared to the Ballistic mid-level SG offering.
The advantage of Ballistic is that the outer layer is optional. When you strip off the outer layer, you have a case of similar size to the Otterbox Defender and it's still far superior to the Otterbox.
Just so you know I don't work for Ballistic, I will say that I am considering a Trident Kraken this go round also. And in reality, I will take whichever I can get my hands on first.
I think I might have to get one of these...
With me being in the military and about to deploy, I want this case. Too bad is out of stock...

I hate Zagg, that's what I've used for the past year, it took quite a while to lose the gripped feel.
I just caved in and bought the Otterbox Defender, it should hold me over until Ballistic or Trident put something nicer out. I'm not an Otterbox fan, but the alternative was the Seidio Rugged which didn't last long on my Evo 4G.
Otterbox don't have jack on this one. Will definitely be getting it.

There are other wet screen protector options that offer just as much protection without the orange peel and grippiness. I don't know what's available for the 3D though...
True, but I personally used my dental grinder at work on the zagg to confirm its claim. So ever since then, I haven't had the urge to try anything else. I'm a creature of habit.

Be careful with that. They (Sprint) charge $4.99 per minute if you're going to Iraq, and $5.99 per minute for Afghanistan. Be sure to turn every sync feature off, and just use WiFi (if you have a signal near you) on your phone if you plan on bringing it.

This looks like a nice case, but how much bulk is it going to add? That thing looks like a monster. The Seidio Active is only 2.2mm, and still that is going to be quite a bit, I don't think I could deal with much more than that.

Yeah, you're on the wrong thread. This thread is for people that want the toughest, roughest, biggest and baddest case around.
Here are the accessories I bought for my 3VO. (coming from OG EVO)
Anti-Glare Screen Protector
Trident Aegis Case
Class 4 16GB SD
Personally have not had a matte screen protector. But I have seen others saying it disrupts the way the 3d works, as in the 3d doesnt look or work as good with that type of screen protector.
I would love to hear your experience with it however.
Get otterbox bruhh I found out the hard way

Also the official htc dock is really nice. Fits perfectly (not a mm too small/big), looks neat and even supports MHL (which is also a great thing to have). I don't like cases personally, the back cover is too nice to put something over it. I also don't have a screen protector cuz I always screw up putting it on (yes I tried) . I do have a nice official htc leather pouch (really cheap from eBay. Link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-PU-Leat...657502?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item1c20fedb5e <-- one downside, doesn't fit perfectly.. top speaker bit is visible..) . I have bought a few cases and docks since I bought my phone almost 2 months ago. after tring a few things and the construction industry I'm in. This is what I bought and seems Like I have dialed in good. I have bought the
Otter Box Defender> http://www.amazon.com/OtterBox-Defender--Hybrid-Holster-Black/dp/B0054JGGB4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322927463&sr=8-1

Took them both back since if I get paint on it it will be hard to get off everyday. Also decided to keep my phone naked.
so I settled on this cheesy pouch this for when I'm painting to cover the phone from overspary and getting knocked around:
http://www.amazon.com/Leather-Prote...54/ref=sr_1_90?ie=UTF8&qid=1322927176&sr=8-90
when I'm home and for the weekends: I have the Seidio non-cased spring cliped holster:

For the car got the iGrip car dock which is nice:
http://www.amazon.com/iGRIP-PerfektFit-Vehicle-Dock-HTC/dp/B005BHDEMS/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1322928178&sr=1-1
But not as universal and easy to take from car to car as the Exomount:
http://www.amazon.com/MSW-Exogear-Exomount-Universal-Mount/dp/B004Z8ZLOS/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1322928242&sr=1-1
I like the iGrip since it holds the car charger wire firm as not to strain the port in the phone from where I like the suction cup to go and the phone is very easy to put in and take out. The Exomount is nice since the suction cup is one of those sticky kind that will go anywhere, I used to to watch movies in the back seat, stuck to the rear seat which the iGrip might not of stuck to.
Regarding my wifes phone we stayed with the White Platinum case (from bestbuy) with the holster from my black case Platinum combo and she uses it on her purse. I do like the Platinum case but the white one seems to discolor from the sun it looks like
Yeah have the otterbox defender, have no complaints except for the holster. Smart to buy a case for it either way. One scratch is too many!
I agree. I hate scratching my phone. I like the otter but its just to big and thick for me to being carrying around in my pocket especially at work. And I'm not a fan of holsters hahA.

Okay, Yes the exomount does have a small ball and its not very stiff. (sounds like a horror movie ha!) If your bouncing around alot the phone does lose it's position and you have to realign it to face you. But that said its very universal and light and easy to just grab when you know you might need it. also its good for anyother device like other ipod touches & smartphones in the family.

I have ordered a Ballistic phone case for my Galaxy S II. At first I was like this case is gonna suck. I work as a bouncer in a night club on the weekends and needed something that was gonna work and they were all out of the otterbox at the store I went too.
All I have to say is the case is amazing. After dropping it a few times and getting roughed up at the club the phone has survived without a scratch. I would recommend this case if you wanna check something out if otterbox is out of stock.

I got a red and black one for my work phone. Don't really care about ugly but wanted to protect it. One thing I've been looking for is a case with a lanyard attachment of some kind. I ended up using a hot needle to poke all the way through both the red and black and fished regular lanyard type nylon through, attached that to a small clip that is between the phone and black. Voila!
Sure I may look like a dork with this hanging from my neck but I haven't lost, dropped or forgot my phone yet since.
Got mine yesterday and I love it. I often don't remember to pull it out of my cargo pocket before putting on my bunker gear. While I'm not worried about it getting wet because of the gear, I thought the phone looked quite a bit flimsy. Now, I don't worry about it. The screen stays next to my hip, and the shell protects the phone from flex.
+1 from me

The thing I like the most is the feel it gives the phone in my hand. Without the case, the phone feels too small and fragile.

I had one of these (both models) for my infuse. It's actually a funny story. On my drive from San Diego to Montgomery we (my wife and I) stopped in Lubbock, TX. We (meaning she) decided new phones were necessary. I found 2 brand new in box infuses on craigslist and bought them (it was quite a feat to get to town late at night, find a hotel, get internet, get on craigslist, find 2 of the same phone, go buy them, go buy dinner, sleep for a couple hours, get back up, and drive to Alabama). Anyways, both were brand new and came with a ballistic case.
Yeah yeah, off topic but I had to tell somebody.
On topic, I like the ballistic case. It sure provides good protection. I'd like to try the trident aegis sometime though.
I just got one 2 weeks ago and it's a great fit, got the black/red.

I received one of these cases when I purchased my Galaxy S II about three weeks ago, and thought I'd do a quick review.
The case is definitely bulkier than the phone. I've found that to be a good thing overall, as it makes it easier to grip and makes the whole thing feel more solid.
The rubber is definitely high-quality. I've dropped my phone a couple of times, and it's been as happy as a lark. No complaints there. The corners are rounded outward and act as bumpers.
In addition, I used the rubber as a spot to grip the phone with my teeth when my hands were full trying to unlock my door earlier.
The holes for the camera, headphones etc are plenty large.
The button covers for the power/lock and volume buttons extend out quite a bit, which makes them easy to find and use. I haven't had too much of a problem with accidentally bumping them, even in my pocket where I routinely turn on any flashlight I happen to be carrying.
I have the Ballistic case and the otterbox commuter case, I find the commuter case to be the better one, looks much better, feels better in the hand, and looks like it should provide enough protection for my phone
Best case out there for I777, although a bit to big lol it's great protection for our phones.

So I'm looking at the flip case made by Samsung and noticed the back cover is substantially thicker than the one that comes on the phone. It also looks like you could snip off the flap that covers the screen. I know, kinda defeats the purpose but at very minimum, you'll have better protection on the back....
Anyone actually like this case as is? I find it cumbersome for most situations and only see its value for covering the face while in a pocket. I'm thinking to chop the front off and use it just for the back.
Bring on the OtterBox!
As a side Note, the flip case back is also textured and does provide a grippier feel.

Returning mine
I bought mine at the AT&T store. The back of the case is the best part, it is superior to the provided battery backing supplied with the phone.
I feel like the flip cover can get in the way of certain actions, particularly talking photos. It makes holding the phone feel a little unnatural whether you leave the flip cover open to the side or folded against the back. For those two reasons I've gone back to the standard battery back and will be exchanging it for another case or a refund.

I like the way the brown one looks ont he white but the front is pretty flimsy and they didn't put too much thought into the overall design. The fact that it replaces the back was a nice thought and helped keep the thickness down opposed to a lot of the journal/folio cases you see on Amazon though.
I'll still probably end up replacing it with one of the aluminum bumpers that looks really nice and offer some more protection.

Man I went to Best Buy to check this case out and for $30 bucs its about the biggest POS for a case I have seen..
Theres ZERO protection on any of the sides..I'm not even sure how it provides any protection at all really..
I ended up getting the Yoobao Slim case...theres some pics below..

Provides some good drop protection and is cheaper...Doesnt add much bulk and still fits in my pocket with no issues.

That's nice, I am ordering that one tonight, thanks for the info and heads up! It looks like that will fit perfectly in my PDAir belt case I have coming, http://www.pdair.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=10100000_10000000_11001331&products_id=34279
The edge of the flipcover came apart on me today. it is peeling open. the edges are just heat sealed material around a thin plastic slab. have been using since launch day. i have Best Buy's GSBTP so if i drop it and it breaks, i'll just get another Note - so i am not too worried about the protection factor from drops. i like the idea of the flip cover, however it does get in the way of the camera and can make using the camera awkward.
i think the lines / grooves that show in a zagg shield would bug me...
hopefully i will find something i like...
Haters gonna hate.

Mine is starting to fall apart. And completely popped off when I dropped it this morning. Luckily just some cosmetic damage to the phone when it bounced off the pavement :/

I really like the flip case. Its a bit pricey at forty bucks, but I like the feel of it. Hopefully it stays together on mine. I really like using it while on the phone, because it keeps my screen clean from the grease from my face.

ew gross
Can the flip case serve to prop up the Galaxy in landscape mode like Samsung's bookcases for their larger tablets?

Ok, I worded that really weird. When I work out, it's unavoidable to sweat, so using my Infuse, I would always have to wipe it down after I talked on it. Yeah, it sucked. But I would rather wipe it off of this, than my screen.
Is this the same one???
I got it for $9 and it protects the corners of the Note. Little flimsy but I thought it was worth the cost and am still using it after 4 days.
Came in a Samsung OEM box.
