Is there any way to change the sensitivity of the proximity sensor. It seems every screen protector I try makes the screen turn off when in a call even without anything near the sensor. I had to cut one of the screen protectors to get around it (but had messed up a corner when applying so I replaced it)
Or is there a way to completely disable it so I just have to hit the power button when in a call to manually turn the screen on or off.
+1
Dont have the same problem but would be helpful.
There is a distance setting in the build.prop file. You could try adjusting that and seeing if that helps.

Perfect. Changed the value (increased it from default of 60) and its working great now. Thanks for that tip.

Well after further testing seems that it didn't fix the problem. Seemed to work when I first made the changes but now the screen is stroll turning off and no matter what I change the value to I can't get the proximity sensor to work right.

Anyway, why do you guys keep using the screen protectors with this gorilla glass phones? I have carried Moto Milestone in my pocket for a year and D2G for 3 months and there are no scratches on them whatsoever.
I use them on every phone I get because although it is gorilla glass it can still get scratches under the right conditions and I for one do not want my $400+ phone to have a scratch on the screen. Never had a phone that had issues like this with screen protectors and the proximity sensor. Multiple iPhones, Dell streak, nexus one, droid, galaxy s. I've tried two different screen protectors with the atria and both have this issue.
I'm having issues with my proximity sensor too, but it seems that I can't make it turn off the screen when I'm talking. I'm not using any screen protector but I do have a case. It was working fine till a week ago but now I just have to block the phone every time I get a call.
The only difference is that I've installed 2 new games, maybe those are affecting the sensor?
Another thing that isn't working anymore is the auto brightness that's always set to minimum, no matter the light conditions. The phone is online for 260+ hours already (had it go to 500+ before but had to turn it off to add a micro sd card, just to be sure it would find it).

Ugh... thing is if you drop your phone, it could crack both with screen protector and without one. If you grind the screen against your keys, it will get scratched through the protective film.
If you use it normally - the chance of scratching it really small. Just my 2 cents.

My wife's phone had a screen protector on and got scratched by being in her purse. The actual screen though had no marks. The screen protectors help. Obviously each incident is different but they can help prevent some damage so in my opinion they are worth it.

Hi there,
Got the same trouble..... but I just noticed it work fine at the sun (outdoor)..... turn the screen off in the shadow..... and switch on in the sun....
so I think a light adjustment has to be done.... but where ?...
Thanks to developers
I had a bunch of requests for Wave Control to have this functionality. I thought it best to do a dedicated app so here it is!
Flip Case Control was designed to work with Samsung's Flip Case on the I9300 while using as little battery as possible. (I left it running all night ~8.5 hours and the battery dipped 1% more than usual)
IMPORTANT: If your case is black or dark on the inside, the sensor doesn't read correctly when the case is closed. To fix this, put a piece of light colored tape on the inside of the case where it lines up with the sensor (located next to the front camera)
Note: A Samsung based ROM is required. CM won't work well.
Here's a demo video:
Play Store Links:
24 Hour Trial Version
Full Version
Could you guys with the Flip Case test it out?
All feedback is appreciated greatly!
I would like to try it for you but unfortunately i don't have flipping cover for this lovely device as it is not here yet everyday im searching everywhere but nothing
Waiting OP to give us their opinion about this app

Is there something special about Samsung's Flip Case? I have a generic flip case but can't get this to work. Running rooted Deodexed LJ1.

There shouldn't be but it is conceivable that if the case surface facing the proximity sensor is black and absorbs too much of the IR from the LED on the prox sensor then it wouldn't register a near reading.
The proximity sensor is an IR LED and light sensor. It detects distance by the amount of IR light that get reflected back off the surface in front of the sensor.
If this is the case, you could try to put a piece a light colored tape on the inside of the case where it lines up with the sensor.
Let me know if this works. What's brand of your case?

According to me proximity autolock works well and it is available on play store
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
It works OK at the moment, I think the sensitivity should be decreased though as something passing an inch or two above the proximity sensor will still turn off the screen. Seeing as flip covers get up close and personal with the proximity sensor this seems a bit too sensitive.
EDIT: Definitely too sensitive, seems to turn off at random at times. Just had a phase where it wouldn't let me keep the screen on.
Maybe a failsafe of sorts could be implemented? Leave the screen on until timeout/power button press if turned on by the power button?
Edit 2: I uninstalled the app to stop it turning the screen off constantly, but it continued even after a reboot, I went into the display settings and saw the screen timeout had been changed to "()"and this was causing the issue, as soon as I changed it back to 30 seconds it was fine. Is this supposed to happen?

Proximity Autolock is a nice app with some excellent features but uses too much battery on The Note 1, an additional 8% overnight. And it doesn't work well on my Note 2.
The app works well. I bought it
It's a very useful feature that Samsung should have built in, but hey, I don't mind supporting you.

Thanks!
I agree Samsung should have made this app. When I first showed it to a friend, he said "Isn't it already supposed to do that?"
A Beta
Here's what I'm playing with right now.
It should hopefully fix the bug D3_ ran into as well as reduce the false triggers. There will still be some due to sensor placement but this should make it much less sensitive. Also response time to turn on the screen should be a little bit faster. It's working well on my I9300, hopefully it should be the same on the Note II.
Let me know if this is performing better for you guys.
Still coming:
Disable in Landscape Mode
Disable when plugged in
[Edit: Removed Old Beta]
Just installed the beta, will report back after some use of it.
V1.05
Just uploaded version 1.05 to the Play Store
Changes:
Reduced false triggers for screen off
Changed button UI
Added notice about dark cases
Updated icon
Sped up screen on response a little bit
Cant you just do this using Tasker? I already spent money on the flip cover, so kinda hesitant to spend more for this functionality (which should be there in the first place!)
So I went into AT&T today with a view to getting the M8.
The M8 was along side the S5 and I though it strange that the screen on the S5 was so much brighter than the M8.
I went into the M8 settings to set the brightness to maximum but found it was already set.
As I turned the phone slightly sideways it suddenly got brighter.
I wear polarized glasses and in their wisdom HTC have made the polarizing of the display such that it is very dim when held in portrait mode.
This is not the case with my vivid or any other HTC phone I have owned.
Damn, I was so looking forward to getting the M8 but this of all things would be a deal breaker for me.

Hah, wow very interesting they did indeed polarize the display. Just went and tested myself. Being in Seattle doesn't lend itself to wearing sunglasses often but sure enough rotating the phone to landscape changes the effect.
Oh and outdoor usage isn't bad Imo just take off automatic brightness and Max it out and you're good. Automatic brightness on every Android phone I have owned has been nothing short of garbage lol. So manual adjustment is the way to go. Sorry you decided against the M8 it's a hell of a phone (coming from someone who switched from the S4)

Yes, it's a great pity. I have owned HTC devices for the last 7 or 8 years at least.
I have +2 magnifiers built into the bottom my sun glasses that I use everyday for driving and very often when I am out fly fishing.
I just happened to dash into the store this morning wearing them instead of my readers.
I would have been really unhappy if I only discovered this post purchase.
There might be two manufacturers for the screen? I've seen a few threads like this now.
I have no issues with any of my polarized sunglasses. Two are Maui Jim and one pair of Raybans.
I used my M8 today in the bright sun. I had no trouble seeing the screen at all. I don't wear glasses and have perfect vision though . It's much better than the AMOLED was on my Note 2.

Interesting. I think the other threads have been to do with color saturation/contrast issue variance between batches of M8's.
I think what we are dealing with here is not the display itself but the protective glass over it or a laminate which may have been applied to it.
My Vivid does not suffer from this problem at all. It would be interesting to get HTC's comment on this.
Try different sunglasses. 3 different types of polarization mostly. Horizontal, vertical, and circular. Let's say the screen is horizontally polarized and the glasses are vertical, that would yield a very dim screen. Just try turning your glasses 90° and see if that works. Instead of blaming the phone, blame your glasses, or both

Same prescription sun glasses work fine with all my other HTC's, Iphones, Samsung and others.
They don't work fine with the M8. What conclusion would you draw?
I was just in touch with HTC "technical" support to see if there could maybe be an issue with some screens and not with others.
I cut and paste my OP for them to read. This was their response:-
"The brightness on the phone by default is set to Auto-Brightness, which actually adjusts the brightness based on the lighting in the area at the time. Depending on where you are and how much light, the screen will be dimmer or brighter."
I had already explained that the brightness was set to max and not auto, and asked if he understood how polarizing works:-
"I'm sorry, but all I can say is that the screen is designed so that it can be viewed from nearly any angle. As such, the screen very thin against the body of the phone. Which could interfere with the polarization effect."
"I'm sorry? the M8 is available in different colors. But the screen is always the same"
Today I popped into and looked M8's at both Best Buy and AT&T.
Neither had the polarizing issue that has been reported by others here and elsewhere on the web.
I took more time to compare the M8 and S5 side by side. The S5 does appear to have more usable screen space and it also has a few other things going for it. However the cover over the charging port will drive me around the bend specially having to access it every day. It is not easy to open at all unless you have long nails. Wireless charging would not work for me as I will put the phone in a rugged protective case.
So, I guess it's the M8 for me and a continued loyal HTC owner!

My phone doesn't polarize either, with out without sun glasses, if that is what the OP meant. It might have been an issue with the in store unit? Wouldn't be the first time I've seen issues with in store phones.
Just got 2 M8s from T-mobile last week. Mine has the polarizing issue and my wifes does not.
As far as the color issue in other threads they both seem to be on the cooler side as they look identical without polarizing sunglasses on.
My guess is they have two versions of screen filters, one vertical and maybe one circular. I think most phones are circular these days since they do not affect sunglasses which I believe are mostly if now all linear polarized. I have a circular polarizer for my camera lens i will play with tonight to see what I can come up with.
Probably going to try and exchange this phone in store to get one that I can see while I have glasses on. It makes navigation useless with this issue.

Slap any descent screen protector on it ( not sure about the glass ones, but the normal ones from SPIGEN I know work ) and it will correct it. Can you specify which spiegen protector you're referring to, there are several on amazon and this issue is driving me nuts.
Try these. I had an extra s4 one, it was in the blue package. I would imagine any descent one would work though. For those not seeing the issue, make sure your glasses are polarized. If you don't see it, turn the phone 90 degrees and it will show. Happens to Any device. All glasses, that are polarized, are polarized horizontally to avoid reflection glare. IPads all do the same etc etc etc.... Google polarization and how it works for why.... I'll let the experts describe it

Only LCD devices. Far as I know, AMOLED devices do not display any change due to polarized glasses. Polarizing filters are used in LCD screens, its a requirement of how they fundamentally work. AMOLED screens don't require/use such filters.

I got mine in the colorcross. Had to hacksaw the lips off one side which was easy and you can slide it in from the side.
Only problem is the images are slightly too far apart due to the size of the screen although it does work well in some apps
I actually tried mine with one of those cardboard vr headsets that I bought on Amazon. Works pretty well with some of the vr apps but I couldn't get the magnet switch to work. Again, the ultra was too big for it but I held it in place with one hand and the visuals were pretty awesome. I know they sell extra large kits, but not sure if I want to buy another one just yet.

Same here, bought the Colorcross Headset because it said would work with Phonoes & Tablets up to 7".
Yeah...sure...7". Not even the Z Ultra does fit in, had to cut some pieces out to make it fit. No chance that anything bigger than the ZU will ever fit.
Then there was the Problem with the lenses, because of the Size of the Display, they need to be further away from the screen and the space between those two lenses needs to be bigger, I managed to get them out of the Headset and glued them back in (about 3mm further back and 8mm further away from each other) - with a cardboard holder i made myself.
That "thing" looks horrible now, but it does the Job. Although, the experience isn't that great with the ZU because of the low DPI of the Screen.

I have recently got an S21 Exynos version and the fingerprint reader is useless.
I have the standard screen protector it came with on it and have tried training it multiple times and even doing the same finger more than once and the best I get is sometimes it works 80% of the time and then at other times of the day it'll fail 100%.
I'm not sure if it depends on if my hands are cold or warm and looking at my fingers my fingerprints don't look particularly pronounced but as it stands the phone may as well not have a fingerprint scanner.
Previous phones with dedicated fingerprint sensors have been better but never perfect.
Is this just me or do others have lots of problems too?
This is my first phone with an in-display fingerprint reader, and I certainly prefer ones like the one on my old Note 9, which were literally flawless.
That said, I would classify this one as "serviceable". It doesn't always work, though some of that might be my dry fingers/hands from all the washing and drier winter air. It seems to be improving in reliability as the weather warms and the air gets more humid. I do occasionally fail enough on the fingerprint that I have to enter my password, which is annoying to say the least.
Blowing warm, moist air on my fingers does tend to help, but then I tend to smudge up the screen a bit more. Oh well. Something I'll have to live with.

Sadly this doesn't seem to make any difference.
It's very erratic, sometimes it works several times in a row but at others it doesn't work at all for multiple attempts.
Very odd.
I've recently got my S21 and rather quickly found out that I have to push the screen very lightly and it works almost every time. To begin with I assumend that I had to push quite hard, but doing that it didn't work very well, so I stumpled on the light press tip. Anyone else with the same experiences?

It worked with the factory protector on it every time. No need to press deep or medium even. Just worked. Soon as a o removed this for some glass protection, boom. It simply will not work. And I've blown way too much money on protectors that do not work! Really sad, since I came from multiple Chinese budget flagships that do this perfectly. Since they use light instead of sound/vibrations.

I've switched from my trusty old Oneplus 5T to the S21 Exynos version, and I'm seriously regretting it. The fingerprint sensor is useless with or without a screen protector, and with Settings -> Display -> Touch Sensitivity turned on. I've deleted all fingerprints and rescanned them in multiple times (obviously after removing/applying a screen protector) and nothing works.

I've gone back to thin film for the display. It will not provide any drop protection but this way the fingerprint works of the time. Like it does without the protector. First time in many many years I'm skipping glass protection. I actively avoid curved displays and one reason for that is the glass protectors are horrible compared to flat display protectors.
I don't have any kind of screen on my S21 and so far (only had it a couple of days) the fingerprint sensor has been pretty reliable. I've even almost got to the point where I can wake up the phone by putting my finger in the right spot about 50% of them time (other times I need to tap the screen so it will show me where to put my finger).
