Some one just tonite asked me how I can possibly get 15+ hours on a single charge using my new Amaze 4G. Just to give you a bit of background, since having the vibrant and the unofficial leaks of Froyo that popped up here and there I was always looking to improve my battery life in every which way while not comprimising my user experiance. For those that dont know, the Vibrant was stuck on Eclair for a really really long time and we resorted to building Froyo roms using the i9000 source which for some reason killed battery like you would believe. After weeks of playing and testing I came to a few generic tips that seem to drastically help (beyond the obvious things you normally would expect).
This is what I personally do and have found to work, you take them or leave them makes no differance to me whatsoever, just friendly suggestions.
The Super Duper Number 1 thing I've found to HUGELY improve my battery life was instead of using gsm (4g/3g/edge) I use Wifi whenever possible. Most of my time is spent at home or work where I have routers. For whatever reason using wifi is less taxing on the battery then gsm. Also changing the wifi sleep policy to never will add to this.
Since i spend most my day inside i keep my brightness relatively low. I do not use auto brightness unless I really need to.
Obviously I keep my gps off unless I absolutely need it.
Sense has some neat power saving features to help with sync settings at certain times... i.e. during my sleeping time, it automatically change my sync to every 2 hours rather then every 15 min like its typically set to during the day.
The few steps above have helped me acheive 15+ hours on a single charge. Some other things that should help even more would be:
Limit the number of widgets you run (especially the ones that constantly update)
Dont use Live Wallpaper
Extend your sync intervals on email and social apps... instead of every 10 move to every 20
make sure when you are away from wifi you turn your wifi off
If you are in an area with poor coverage (especially 4g) turn your data to edge only
Not sure about LCD but on my samoled keeping screen colors to darkest possible (black wallpapers, etc) helps conserve a bit
Change you timeout setting to the lowest you can stand possible (15sec, 30sec)
Avoid task killer apps... let the system do its job or use the built in task killer for those apps you wish to close. (I know the verdict is out on whether they help or not, but I believe using auto app killers does more damage then good, they were designed for old android versions that didnt function the way GB does now)
That's it for now... if I can remember or think of any more I will def post. Like I said you can take or leave my advice. Please do me one favor.... if you DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING POSITIVE TO ADD THEN KEEP YOUR NEGATIVTY TO YOURSELF. It makes for a happier forum! Thanks
how do you access the internal task killer? i havent seen it.. but i see it in the applications when i manage my apps.
and i think the one thing i do wrong is never switch to wifi lol
my previous devices would drain faster on wifi than gsm
but i will give it a try
thanks
I've heard this also WiFi + radio drains more than just radio unless you have a crappy connection then you are better.off with wifi. Gr8 guide tho .... Use less sync people the weather is the same as it was 2h ago.... Unless its raining

To also help with Battery Life you can do these steps exactly: 1) Turn your device ON and Charge the device for 8 hours or more 2) Unplug the device and Turn the phone OFF and charge for 1 hour 3) Unplug the device Turn ON wait 2 minutes and Turn OFF and charge for another hour Your battery life should almost double, we have tested this on our devices and other agents have seen a major difference as well.

Radio by itself drains more battery then using wifi + radio... trust me i've been doing it for 2+ years. also had all my team mates do the same and they all confirmed a huge boost in battery. as long as you are CONNECTED to a wifi router it will not drain. now if you leave the wifi and keep it on along with radio on, that will totally demolish your battery. its the constant searching on both parts that eats the most battery. if youre solid connected... its no longer searching.
I did all that and then some and my battery shows 120 to 200 MA in standby . I used to have htc hd2 and it had 3 to 5 MA in standby . I don't know what to disable anymore , Or is this normal for this phone ?
Juice Defender is the best way to conserve battery on any android phone.... try it out on the app market. doing all these other tips you mentioned does help very little. but if you wish to have your battery last a lot longer then Juice Defender is the way to go...
Thanks!! I did all this and got juice defender ultimate

I was going to post the same thing, and found this here - lol. I have been trying this for a few days already.
I will add some minor modifications though. The above was done when devices and batteries were smaller. The 8 hours might be enough - see if the light changes from amber to green by then (or the battery indicator) - otherwise wait.
Then also wait on the 1st 1 hour charge while off if the light is still amber at one hour - wait until it is green. Ditto on the second one.
I did it just like the original above, and when I turned my phone on at the end - it was at 93%, so I plugged it in until it hit 100% for a while, disconnected, and then did a battery calibration (APP) at 100%
Again - I think with the bigger battery it takes longer. on a MT4G, the light was green at the end of each hour (smaller battery).
I have seen a significant improvement - and I already had battery saving profiles set up with SETCPU. I may do it one more time the way I modified it above.
PS - I always get better life on WiFi (If connected). Also, a friend lives in a weak (data) signal area, and when not on WiFi, keeping it on 2g (edge) really upped her life on a MT4G

I mainly posted that for proof of concept. The only way I ever got what I wanted out of a battery was through SBC kernels. That's one reason way I am leaving the Evo and switching to the Amaze, outside of the crap Sprint puts customers through.
Is the Ultimate app worth it?
Hell yea it's worth it. Because without it when your device is asleep it's still connected to 4g and whatever else. But with juice defender it turns off everything the moment you put the phone to sleep saving you a lot battery for when you really need to use your phone so yes. Its a must I feel like it should be mandatory on every android phone.

x2 on that... It really gives you a longer battery life. and having 2 batteries also extends the life to 24 hours + of not having to sit and wait for a full charged battery.
If you want to see your Sense force closing after every restart + plus having other problems such as frozen clock, etc, then use Juice Defender. After a week of constant problems caused by this app (and I was using it on the Balance mode), I was that close to returning my Amaze, because initially I thought there was some software defect, till one day I googled it and found out the real reason. Uninstalled it and my problems disappeared at once (actually I did a factory reset just to make sure its all gone). Just a fair warning.

Been on it for a week and and I haven't seen those type of problems and I'm using aggressive...
I was using Ultimate v. 3.80, tried it on my girlfriend's phone (she was using the free version before I installed the ultimate), started force closing too (she was about to kill me haha)... Check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315494
P.s. Juice Defender team said the problem occurs with Plus and Ultimate because they use API call, which is incompatible with Android compatibility test suite... Im just saying all this so if people start getting these launcher force closes after restart, not to freak out and just uninstall it...

I have been messing around with system tuner app for a while now and I really like the program.
I would like to hear from people who have used this app and their results with various tweaks that this app provides.
in the boot settings menu:
1. forcing both CPU's online: this should technically give you a better battery life, since it puts less strain on on cpu at a time, has anyone had a good exprience using this?
2. Boost app loading: anyone had any significant improvement with this?
My own settings:
I usually clock my phone at 1.5 (on demand governor) even though faux's kernel allows 1.7 max. I put max clock for screen off at 384 and conservative governor.
I have Undervolted before but do not see a very significant battery difference so I just left it alone.
I tried out the autokill option of system tuner, I only tried to kill the ghost apps, to refrain from the cpu from having to keep restarting the phone, but this also seems to kill battery life...In my experience any type of task killer however detailed will reduce battery and does not increase performance, unless you're running a poorly written app that just needs to be killed.
I use three other programs to monitor my phone
1. system pannel: very good at finding rogue apps that kill cpu...I highly recommend the pro version, you can get a history of what has used cpu up to a week.
2. Onavo and My data manger which basically monitor my wifi and mobile traffic, Onavo only monitors mobile network traffic and lets you restrict apps to only wifi. however it does not measure wifi use of data. My data manager monitor both wifi and network usage but does not give you any options to do anything with the apps, it basically tells you what program is using data while on wifi and mobile.
If anyone has found a good balance between performance and battery saving, please do share.
Thank you.
I read some other guy also mentioned the all cpus on thing. im not sure but isnt it the same as making both processors work at the same time which leads to phone overheating? I will give it a try though. from what you noticed, do you like it more with both cpu on or is better the way it was?

I have widget locker and havn't had that problem...I just flashed faux's latest kernel and am in the process of re calibrating my battery, it seemed to jump from 100 to 90 in about 10 minutes!!!!!! now I noticed that happening...but I havn't had time to fully replicate it...i need more time..I believe it might have something to do with fauxes kernel, he mentioned that when screen goes off he it puts the phone into a low power consumption mode, but also has something that when you turn it on, is quick to turn on!!! we'll have to wait and see.
If you've been following this thread, just wanted make a quick update...I want to give you my results with system tuner tweaking. Forcing both cores online is a bad idea. It will literally kill your battery in a matter of a couple of hours. ICS will hopefully be different and utilize the cores how they should be, saving some battery and giving the amaze longer battery life!
On the other hand reducing reducing clock frequency on screen off will help in battery life (obviously).

yes still stock rooted, I put the governor on conservative and put the frequency to 384 or around there, while screen is off.
What helps most I found out is turning off all the radios like wifi and network data, (basically putting phone on airplane mode). Instead of dropping down 15 percent in 6 hours it drops like 3 when I turn airplane on. But like I've said before it's unrealistic I'm always recieving google talk, google voice, facebook updates and I have to have both of these on which unfortunately eats a lot of battery.
I keep switching back and forth between faux's kernel and stock and I'm actually finding stock gives me better battery life for some reason. Even though I set the clock speeds on both at 1.5 ghz.

Battery Life
Major battery drain is the screen, when on eats up all the juice, dimming helps a bit
charge source: usb vs AC charge
usb charging takes quite a while, AC charge quicker (~ an hour)
Also, from my observation, usb charged battery runs out quicker than AC charge
Data Connection, Juice defender helps a lot
turn off sync you don't need, like HTC sense

well the problem is its not my screen. It's when the phone is idle, I usually lose about 15 to 20 percent over night. if I turn off the radios it drops down to about 3 to 4 percent overnight....like I said before I can't turn off the radios...I constantly use google voice, google talk, facebook. And they require both a cell connection and a data connection. I hate to pay for more apps...I've already paid for a bunch of apps to control and see my phone's usage of cpu and battery...is the app really worth it? wish they had a lite version

For what it is worth I am running BulletProof 2.3.1 and last night I took phone off charger at 10:00 PM, alarm goes off at 3:30 snoozing every 15 min until 4:15...Battery was at 100% still. It is now 7:00 AM and battery is at 96%.
This was after flashing back to BP around 8:00 PM.
I've noticed the same type of activity when in Airplane mode. Extremely low power consumption - fantastic.
Is it possible maybe to undervolt the Wifi/BT/Mobile radios? Would that make any difference or am I off base here?

You had something setup wrong then I think.. you can change how often in syncs while the screen is off, the default setting is for it to turn on data for 1 minute every 15 minutes. Most people don't need to know things so bad that they can't work with a 14 minute delay(at worst), and of couse the internet is on while screen is on, when you're actually using it.
I thought I would need to use juice defender, but since I switched to bulletproof, my usage last me an entire day. From 8am till 1am, usually with some to spare. The only tweak I made to cpu was to enable 192mhz, it isn't like there is a performance drop, but it did make a notable difference in battery life.
If I wanted to I could use juice defender to get more than one day out of it, and I keep a spare battery on me in case I really need to use the phone.. but haven't really needed it.

Hey all,
Didn't notice if there was one of these where everyone could post screenshots of their battery usage for the new Evo. I'm thinking we should have a central location to discuss this. Attached are my recent stats and I'm wondering if this is considered good battery life or if something is up with my phone. Mods, if one of these exists, please close and post link.

Seems low I haven't really put my battery through cycles yet but I'll post when I get a chance...I'm guessing from what I've seen so far about 4-5 hours screen on time with mix of internet/games
If you don't post your screen on time shot it really doesn't matter imho...but the 3 shots most people are putting up is perfect for comparison...just my two cents.

Edit: I've noticed over the last few months on ICS that listening to local music on head phones with screen off shows as awake time with solid blue line. Which does make sense, as the phone is not sleeping, but I dont think it reported/showed that way in gingerbread. You used to be able to just compare blue lines for determining a wakelock (other than music).

It actually might have something to do with all the monitoring your doing. I've found if I leave it alone and don't worry about things I easily get a whole day with all radios on 3 hours of screen time and still have about 40%. The battery life comes from the processor so letting it sleep is key.

I agree. But when I noticed that I was having bad battery life, I had to find out what the cause was. Sometimes it is a rogue app or a system component gone bonkers. Best to try and root it out and then go back to the non-monitoring.

That day I took those pics I was at work. So the wake time without the screen on was me playing podcasts with the screen off. No downloading them. But I seem to have the same result with or without the podcasts.
But I think I did find a major culprit today. One of the stocks widgets I was using seemed to be draining the battery. I uninstalled it and my battery stats seem better.

It actually might have something to do with all the monitoring your doing. I've found if I leave it alone and don't worry about things I easily get a whole day with all radios on 3 hours of screen time and still have about 40%. The battery life comes from the processor so letting it sleep is key.

how do i get into that screen?? i cant find it in my phone!! lol.. sorry guys
Pull down the notification bar hit settings then power then click on the power bar which should bring up the breakdown of the battery
I have terrible battery life....
This is also with an hour of voice calls.
And my signal isn't too great for most of the charge.
If you are getting poor battery life, and have disabled any apps, you may want to consider reenabling them to see if that helps. It seems counter intuitive, but I noticed a significant drop in battery life after disabling certain pre installed apps.
Well tl;dr my Thunderbolt is slowly taking a crap on me, eMMC corrupting, phone reboots when I remove it from the charger, boot loops from 1-15minutes depending when it wants to work.
I got the Rezound now, and holy crap I haven't experienced so many problems with Android since I first started the S-OFF Rooting stuff back on the HTC Incredible.
For example, I thought the battery hog dialer issue was fixed past 2.3.4, but somehow present on 4.0.3 Slimrom.
For a phone that isn't connected to WiFi, in Airplane mode, this thing eats so much power its retarded.
I have SVS values -75mA per clock, down clocked. And I'm still using on average -100mA - -220mA.
I've applied all the same tweaks I've learned from my past 2 phone too this Rezound. My Thunderbolt I can have in deep sleep only using -15-30mA on average and that's with mobile data off, and very weak signal since my building I live in is a military bunker.
So am I missing something with this phone that I don't know about, or is Snapdragon S3 and Adreno 220 just a bad combination?
Rezound Setup
HBOOT - 2.25
S-ON
Radio 421r/424r
OpenDSP - 13.6.0.7611.00.0104
Slimrom v1.9
OC Kernel by SebastianFM
Downclocked to 1.296Ghz
-75mA per clock across the table
Capacitive Backlight - Off
Phone in airplane mode, everything is off ex- all notifications disabled, auto sync off. It's cut off to the outside world and still eating power up like it's nothing.
Sad to say but its just the Rezound. These things eat through a battery in no time. The biggest culprit is the screen itself. Typically you'll only get around 1.5-2 hours of "screen on" time on a stock battery, and at most 4 on an extended one.
4G radio + one of the first versions of an HD screen on the market = no battery life

The best advice I could give you is to maybe try an extended battery. I'm using the HTC 2750 (I think that's the number) along with the Nils P and EclipticRez roms and my battery life is pretty good. Oh yeah, I'm using their stock CPU settings as well. Good luck.
Ya that's what I was noticing. Now I can see that S-LCD Screens are damn battery hogs. Good Ole TFT in my Thunderbolt barely eating anything. On my extended battery with my T-Bolt getting more than 24hrs from using 4G, spotty signal, auto sync, auto brightness etc. And that's with the battery slowly getting worse from charge/discharge cycles.
Hell I even disabled the backlight of the capacitive screen in Leedroid to get more juice out of this thing. I wish my T-Bolt didn't take a crap
@Nike, you mean the HTC 2750 battery that I was able to buy for my Thunderbolt fits the Rezound? I may have to try that right now. Now I hope my T-Bolt reboots back up, :/
No matter what I do the battery life stinks... I just bought several spare batteries and always keep at least one spare with me...
Yes and I'm not sure how, its been widely known that battery life is poor with the HD screen and all. Oh and the 4g, and the dual core 1.5 GHz processor. You might want to rig up a car battery.

You really haven't told us your definition of "bad". How much screen on time do you get? I'm not a 'heavy' user and easily get through a day on stock battery and have 90% of deep sleep using the set up in my sig.
If you min freq. is 192, increase it to 384. I've found that to help battery life. If you don't have one, pick up a something like better battery stats from the play store so you can analyze what is causing your drain.

The problem is, I can't get it a proper reading without the phone eating up power while the screen is off. So I really don't have any exact statistics on how its running so far I'm using Battery Monitor Widget and Gsam Battery Monitor. I did increase my min to 384 and see how it pans out for me.
According to Battery Monitor Widget, Dialer has 2m currently 14% then Android System is 55seconds but 1257%. That was checked off as Screen Off - Since Last Unplugged
Gsam is different story, LauncherPro is 31.5%, Kernel 2.1%, Android System 2.0%, and then Dialer is only 0.8%
I'm determined to make this phone work for my and not itself.

Ya I still have my extended battery from my Thunderbolt. I might as well use it. Only issue is that I need the extended battery cover plate which I don't have.

I have an extended battery and cover that I'm not using and don't think I ever will. I got it with the phone as part of a package and I've never used it myself. It's used, but well taken care of since I bought the phone off a recognized themer on this site. pm me if you're interested.
@feralicious I may take you up on that, only then I will be on standby. Trying to find a solid answer why my phone eats 35% during the night during deep sleep according to CPU Spy telling me it was deep sleep all night.
I'm using the HTC extended battery with tonked world edition ROM and kernel. Also using ROM toolbox pro and v6 supercharger gets me great battery life. 6+ hours of talk time and 4 hours of screen timeI can easily go over 24 hours or over 3 days with light usage.

Hey guys.
i was wondering if someone could shed some light on the EVOs battery life and their experience with it i am currently running a custom rom but it has stock kernal and it runs relatively smooth and just fine but my battery life is always unpredictable. sometimes it will get very hot and last only a few hours while other times it will stay cool and last up to 2 days (extended life battery equipped in phone). so i was wondering if any of you had either a great battery saving and monitor app your prefer to use or some sort of task killer or something of the sorts or just tips and etc in general to help me combat my short charge issue.
thanks in advance!
P.S. i also do about the same thing everyday give or take a few smaller sized apps and always close recent apps regularly.
In general, the battery sucks.
But try greenify, it seems to help me

the OEM battery did indeed suck but this battery does well as long as the phone doesnt get really hot (like at least 90+ degrees farenheit) than it will last for days on end no matter what i do which is kind of strange.
Indeed, the battery does suck, and greenify does help, but try this battery....
I'm running it and it slightly increases the life by abt 3-4 hrs....
edit: since i'm new to xda, i can't post links, but it's called ec technonology
just search "htc evo 3d battery" on amazon and this should be the second result

yeah i got the extended battery for mine and i have not been disappointed but when it all of a sudden gets hot it just destroys the battery. i will have to try out greenify and see if it helps me out!
thanks for the input guys i really appreciate it
same here
Im using a 1900mah battery and i just use kernel tuner to underclock both CPU cores to 900mhz,the 2D GPU to 200mhz and 3d to 266mhz, and then I disable vsync..and I get amazing battery (I took my phone off the charger at 78%

i tried the underclocking using kernal tuner but my limited knowledge of kernal tuner made it a little hard so i set to the conserative and powersaver preset a few times but it was too laggy and ran very choppy which i didnt like but on xondemand it works smooth and gives me reasonable battery life so long as it doesnt get hot. im on a 3500mah battery though. and my screen birghtness is about 1/4 of the way up.
