[Q] Update question from noob - Motorola Photon 4G

The MoPho is my first Android device. Do I need to back up anything before I run the OTA update? If so, how? Will I need to reinstall anything or reset my home screens?
Thanks for your help.

No after update it will look just as it did before. If you are rooted it will unroot and you will have to reroot again. But no backup needed

Thanks! Is that for all updates or only for the one that just came out? What about Android version updates?

The only thing you have to worry about with OTA updates is whether or not you're rooted. If you're not, install to your hearts content.

Doubtful. The OTA is pushed via the network. They wouldn't push a OTA update on you because they don't have the update for your phone unless the carrier you are using sells the Vibrant. At least that is my understanding of it. I think there is an ODIN image of the OTA update if you wanted to get it in the Development Forums.

Smart Actions update

There's an update for Smart Actions available in the Market. Says there are localization changes and bug fixes.

wtf??? how is that possible?

i went to the maket on the web, i found it there but for some ungodly reason it says me device is not compatible???? are you on Verizon?
I don't see it in the market either. I'm with Verizon.
Does the OP have the leaked update? I only saw the update show up after I installed the leaked update for the 912. Version 2.1.0.0 after today's update. Before that it was 2.0.70. If you don't have the leaked update your version is probably older
I see the update in my market. Under What's New, it says:
"Localization Changes for Japanese and Turkish languages"
"Misc Bug Fixes"
The update is dated for 1/20/12
2.67MB
I completely forgot that I'm running the leak, sorry. Yes, I'm with Verizon. Not rooted, though so if you run the update too, you can grab it.

Very important to note that you MUST be using either the CDMA 2.3.6 update, or the LATEST. 167 GSM 2.3.6 update to use this. I spent an age trying to get hold of it on previous firmware, it absolutely will not work.
The reason for this is that those latest updates change the structure of the smart actions apps significantly, and remove/merge a bunch of apks that were previously part of it. This makes the apps modular and able to be updated from the market.

Am I misunderstanding you, or are you saying the phone must be running the "cheesecake" unofficial update snarfed from the servers in order to use the new Smart Actions? The latest official update was to 748 for Verizon CDMA.

As far as I'm aware, that's 100% correct. Certainly the case for GSM, the last officially pushed OTA does not make the market update available.
Makes you wonder why Moto released the app to market in December, and why they've updated it twice since then.

Moto made ICS for the XOOM in December. They are building up from 2.3.5 to 2.3.6 to 2.3.7 to hopefully 4.0.3. Who knows why? They could have done 2.3.5 to 4.0.3. Moto makes no sense

Between Blur oddities like giant widgets that do nothing when tapped, a home launcher that sets third party launchers as default automatically, all manner of hidden apps, the obvious conflicts between consumer & business use, and potentially releasing the same hardware in GSM and CDMA 'variants' by just disabling radios in software...yeah, Moto is a very strange OEM.

Is there a 2.3.7 patch out there? Or is that just speculation?

[Q] Can I flash US Atrix 4G SBF on international Atrix?

Sorry if this question is stupid, but can i use the RSD Lite software to flash an US Atrix 4G Gingerbread SBF on my international Atrix? Also, if that is possible, will I be able to receive the ICS update along with other AT&T Atrix 4G users?
Thanks.

Anyone in Canada get the ics update?

Even when i called rogers they said today via manual update....still nothing
is it just me ?
I haven't received it either. I'm in southern Ontario...I know they are saying location doesnt mean anything but I m tossing it out there. I am going to hope its because its Canada Day weekend and Rogers doesnt want to pay the overtime. Have some drinks and enjoy the weather! Hopefully by next weekend we will have it.
I live in Quebec Canada and nothing yet, I hope we get it after the long weekend

Further plans coming soon?

Motorola timeline was updated so the photon and atrix are now listed as "Further plans coming soon". Now I'm no longer on the photon any more, but this pisses me off.

It's annoying effort sure. I was using joker's cm10 on my Electrify, but needed more stability and battery life so I'm back to cm7 for now.
Even if they would just release drivers to the public...I won't even ask for a full build.

unlock our phones and get lost Moto
if Moto has no plans to update, let them unlock our phone and get lost.
I will think 100 times before planing to buy a MOTO phone in the future.

I'm thinking "Future Plans" means we are skipping ICS entirely for JB - I mean Development already started for The Photon back in the last update. They can't just announce right now that they are doing that for those 2 phones.
If my phone gets JB, I may just **** a house. However, I'm not concerned with wait time cause I'm not due for an upgrade till May.
Also, this will be my last Motorola unless we get a nexus device.
Even then, Motorola and Google are gonna hafta wow me

If we do actually get an update now to anything i will be happy because we can use the drivers to make the roms on here run better but my hope is that they do not cancel everything and do not give us an update at all because i will also definitely think twice before buying another moto phone. I am already on the fence about wanting to get rid of my photon and trying to pick us a nexus because of the timely updates and good developer support. Just waiting to see if motorola really does push me to do it by getting rid of any update for our phone.
I'm hoping that "further plans" means they are doing JB, if they were going to cancel they would have put "Will remain on Gingerbread (Android 2.3)"
I'm been using the AOKP JB Build on my photon and absolutely love it. So I'm not too concerned if there ends up being a JB update or not. Our devs rock. Screw motorola.

Big props to the XDA devs for sure. Unfortunately I'm on a locked bootloader so I can only use a few good roms.
Are you not wanting to unlock the bootloader? I know you lose 4g. But I personally haven't missed it. I've enjoyed the freedom of an unlocked bl.

No I can't unlock it. My phone was on 2.3.5 OTA update when I bought it. So it's never getting unlocked as of right now.
Page updated. Atrix 4G and Photon 4G to remain on Gingerbread.
USA:
Atrix 4G: Will remain on Gingerbread (2.3)
Photon 4G: Will remain on Gingerbread (2.3)
Same for Asia pacific.
