I've read many threads on how to change roms on the Streak.
I've actually managed to install several versions of Stephens ROMs.
I am however still confused on how to get back to a stock Froyo ROM. Why is it a two step process?
What is the relationship between fastboot and streakmod? I think this is the key. Once I understand this, then I will understand why I can't simply use streakmod to get back to stock.
Also, when you install a ROM shouldn't it completely erase everthing there and replace it? I don't understand why I get different results when I apply the same ROM depending on what ROM was applied before. This suggest that there is a preferred sequence when it comes to applying Stephen's latest ROMS.
Last question, how come doing a factory reset doesn't put me back in the state the device came in?

You need a stock recovery to install an update.pkg file (stock roms) and streakdroid recovery (or clockwork, but I suggest streakdroid) to install an update.zip. So you have to flash the stock recovery then install the stock ROM.

The reset restores that last installed ROM. This prevents updates being wiped out by a reset. It's intended to wipe the slate clean for the currently installed ROM.
Okay thanks. starting to make more sense.
I was able to download streak_318_12821_00.pkg file from Dell. I believe this is the Froyo 2.2 stock file from Dell for US versions.
so now i can use fastboot.exe to install this pkg file?

You don't use fastboot.exe to install ROMs.
If you are on a streakdroid rom you use fastboot to flash a stock recovery. This one should work.
You then rename the rom file to update.pkg, put it in the root of your sd card and boot into stock recovery. Select option2 and the stock rom should install. You will have to set up your phone after this (apps, accounts, etc.) so use your favorite backup solution first.
Okay maybe it's beginning to dawn on me.
So customs ROMS can only be installed via a custom ROM loader like streakmod. So once you update yourself to use streakmod, you can no longer install .pkg files which are the stock ROMS.
So now I have to flash the stock ROM installer back to the device to install the stock ROM which is a pkg file. Once it's installed, it replaces streakmod.
So once I'm back at the stock ROM installer and install the pkg file, I will have to reinstall streakmod to update to a Stephen ROM.
Do I have this correct?
Correct

Thanks a million. You helped me understand what a thousand posts across various websites and forums could not.
Not in retrospect it seems absurdly simple.
I've just managed to go back to stock and back to 1.81.
It finally all makes sense now.

I've flashed everything properly and I'm able to boot into streakmod immediately after flashing. However, upon rebooting the phone, going into recovery mode will not take me to streakmod. It will only take me to the stock Dell recovery page (where I can restore or press volume to power down).
Why does this only work immediately after flashboot and not afterwards?
Thanks in advance.
This is on 354 btw.

When you reboot the phone it's supposed to take you to the stock DELL recovery. You choose the option to install update.pkg and then when you see the DELL logo with a yellow exclamation point you press the power button again and it will take you to Streakmod.
Now, if you are using a stock ROM, then you have to use a file manager that gives you root access (such as Root Explorer) to your internal SD card and rename a file called "install-recovery.sh", located in \system\etc (can't remember exactly where it is) and rename it to install-recovery.sh.bak. Then flash Clockworkmod or Streakmod again and you should be good to go

Yeah, it works fine after rebooting through flashboot, but after that the streakmod page will not load up...it will simply take me back to the stock DELL recovery.
I'll try this fix though...thanks!
Stock roms overwrite the recovery after every boot. That's why is works once after flashing. You'll have to run a custom rom to maintain a coustom recovery. Sorry :-(

You do not have to run a custom rom to use a custom recovery. You do have to root your phone so that you can rename the file install-recovery.sh located in the folder /system/etc/ so that it does not run every time you boot your phone. I use stock 351 and the recovery-v0.3.2.7-DoctorWFix.zip version of StrekMod Recovery so I can make nandroid backups. The latest version of MultiRecovery Flasher will install this version.

Please read through this very thread... (not that there aren't hundreds more with the same info) and you will find a link to probably the one of the top guides out there for flashing the Streak...
ok so in a few hours im trading my beloved x10i for a dell streak 5, ive been putting custom roms and kernels etc for a while now,
how easy it is compared to the x10i to put on a custom rom etc, on the x10i its a case of putting the rom .zip file on your sd card , wiping data, cache, etc then flashing new rom, is it as simple as that? or harder? ive been trying to read a few threads on here but cant find the info i need,
the streak im getting is completely stock, currently on o2, not rooted or nothing
so is there any good tutorials around here (upto date ones) and what is the best rom and kernel to put on it
thanks for reading and thanks in advance for your help, looking forward to becoming a streak 5 owner!
The same procedure once you get a custom recovery on the Streak (use StreakMod, not ClockworkMod). You'll have to put the drivers on your computer so you can connect the Streak in Fastboot mode.
Look @ the Streak 5 wiki on XDA, its all there...

Nice choice on the Streak
Once your on a gingerbread baseband (flash via fastboot on pc) and have Streakmod recovery
Flashing roms is simple , in fact its the same.
DSC for example has a pre flash preparing pack.
This will flash amss and dp1 files needed for gingerbread, and streakmod recovery (like clockworkmod)
Then boot straight into recovery, choose update (this will take you to streakmod menu)
Flash rom like normal
Choose reboot
Back into recovery before booting and do a dell factory reset (not via streakmod)
Thats it, its very easy after a couple of go's.
Good luck

any links for this? ive been looking on the wiki but its like starting from scratch again lol
Get the dsc starter pack from the dsc rom thread in development section
See how to install pc driver in the wiki.
Put the rom zip onto memory card
Turn streak on with camera button held down and press fastboot.
Connect usb to streak and it should say fastboot mode (if not install pc driver)
Flash amss and dp1 and recovery using dsc pack (it does it all for you)
Hold down both volume buttons to enter dell recovery
Choose second option to enter streakmod
Flash zip and reboot with volume buttons held again to enter dell recovery
Choose factory reset in dell recovery and voila.
It sounds longwinded but is actually very easy. Just read the wiki and find a guide or two.
There are some good vids on youtube
Thanks m8 will have a better look tomorrow

Its not hard but there are things that can go wrong so best to read around...
well ive got streakdroid recovery installed, made a nandroid backup, but now not sure which is best rom to install, any ideas which is best?
I personally like DSC. Its in constant development with lots of updates and a team of developers. I haven't had a screen of death or a random reboot using it as provided. My only problems come when changing things that I know nothing about.
i have downloaded that , do install v0.6b first then reboot, then update 061 or do install 0.6b then 061 then reboot? im kinda confused, have been doing lots of reading though
0.60>reboot to recovery
Do a dell factory reset not streakmod one.
Let rom boot up and finish setup.
Flash 0.61 and clear cache, dalvik and fix permissions in streakmod.
Done.
Look at the first page in dsc thread for extra's and themes
OK well I took a chance and just installed o.6b then 061 straight after didnt wipe cache but I did do the factory reset, all seems fine everything working perfectly

Hi first I want to say that i'm not a noob, I already rooted my streak, installed streakdroid, power rom and longhorn 2.2 (currently using). my problem is, I want to update to longhorn 2.5, so I downloaded the zip put it on root of sd, reboot in recovery, update from zip and the setup stop right after the ''opening package'' and I get back to the top menu in recovery. I tried with an other rom and I still have the same problem... any idea on what i'm doing wrong?
Thanks!
pull the SD card and mount in a PC card adapter and do a scandisk on it.
Reflash streakmod recovery
try another recovery. i wonder what yo did to install longhorn 2.2?

actually that's the reason of my question, I flashed several rom and now I can't... weird.. but I'll try scanning my SD
Did the scan nothing has changed...
It may be that you need to copy all of the contents of your SD card to another location (backup) then re-Format the SD card. after it is reformatted, copy back the files and try again. I have had to Format my SD card a few times to keep it running smoothly.
yeah well i'm really stock right now I flashed my sd and even tried on an other one and it still doesn't work... it still stop after the opening package..
if it can help I filmed the steps from recovery to show where it freeze. and yes the screen is reversed but you can clearly see that it does not upgrade to longhorn 2.5 (a the end you see that i'm still on 2.2 v1)
http://youtu.be/SvpG1SKhE40
Whats your ROM version?
I have tryed to run Longhorn 2.5 under ROM 406 but it doesnt started up even after factory reset ... so I flashed it to 407 and wiped dalvik cash, reflashed Longhorn and it works pretty fine
Or
You might use Streakflesh to fully flash your device to the standart ROM as it was before, and then download ROM 407, amss and dsp files, and flash them using fastboot.
Well its all what i have done to get my streak work with Longhorn 2.5 hope it will help u2

for the second part I want to know, the standart rom I just need to look for a dell rom 2.2 flash it with fastboot then reflash with 407, amss and dsp? is there any specific amss and dsp file I should get since I already flashed those recommanded for streakdroid (I think DJSteve did them)
ps: thanks for also answering my last resort thread
ok I'm really stock... downgraded to original rom on 2.2.1 re-did everything after the opening package nothing works... is it possible to install a costum rom with fasboot only?

Hi,
I have an issue installing Longhorn 2.8.
My knowledge is limited to use of flashboot, and installing 407 Olleh.
I have this Olleh, and then installed Streakmod recovery (0.3.8), rooted with superuser.zip, made nandroid backups, and tried to follow: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1355878
(where I can't post...)
what I get is: [
(...)
Opening update package Longhorn_2.8.zip
E: Can't open /sdcard/Longhorn_2.8.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted
]
I tried "wipe data/ factory reset", also the factory reset (after a reboot), wipe cache partition, wipe dalbik cache, fixed premissions
still the same result
Could it be due to limited space (200MB) left on SD card (4GB size)?
in this case how do I remove old nandroid backups?
thanks
My son has one of these ph's...
Soonish I will install recovery using odin & then make a nandroid of his stock rom...
once we have that done I'm guessing he'll want to try a custom rom
do I need to flash a 2.2 stock rom before trying CM7??
If so, which stock rom should I be using... I'm from New Zealand btw (next to Australia).

Pre-requisites:
Visit the Basebands thread and make sure that you are using a baseband that is recommended for CyanogenMod.
You need a rooted phone, ClockworkMod Recovery (first time users must flash with Odin), and ROM Manager. For more information on all three items, see the Getting started with ROM Manager & ClockworkMod section in post #2.

I understand, but you already need the 2.2 baseband version before installing CM7 port. It won't work with 2.1 baseband. Just go to madteam.co forum and grab the latest baseband version for your region, then flash it, and finally flash the CWM.

Please advise
These are the steps that I'm using to flash stock and other ROMs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13958380&postcount=2
You have to pass the three key combination in order to enter "download mode". After you are in, you will like to load the OPS file which is named EUROPA_v1.0.ops. Choose "one package" in Odin options in the left and load the baseband that you've downloaded at the baseband thread in "One package" down in the right. Then connect the phone and the spot called "Com port mapping" will light up in yellow which means that not only that your phone has been detected, but it is ready to be flashed. Now click the "Start" button and wait a few seconds. Your phone will restart and probably will bootloop. Take out the battery and place it back in a few seconds later. Go to download mode again and load the CWM tar as "one package". Then flash again.
After the phone restarts you will be within the ClockworkMod recovery. Now it is time to place the update and gapps (should your son need google apps package for some reason) in the root folder of your microSD card (or in some folder called eg. CyanogenMod). Flash the CM update, wipe all data, cache, dalvik, battery stats, fix permissions, restart and you will see the blue skating robot. If you have a bootloop, redownload the update file for CM and reupload it to to sd card... now you are using the CM port by psyke83

Dude!! I flashed the baseband from madteam and now I'm in boot loop
Knew it sounded fishy
baseband on my moto is changed after rom install... not before
I'd appreciate if you could point me to a stock firmware that I can flash with Odin or tell me the key combination to get into recovery mode so I can restore the backup I made...
Edit: Found a English stock 2.2 rom which I flashed using Odin...
Can't we get into recovery with a key combo?? Seems odd
Here is the sequence of upgrading from 2.1 to CM7 port:
Plan B
1. flash baseband for 2.2 (or flash 2.2 itself and it will replace 2.1 baseband with 2.2 one)
2. flash CWM and it will reboot in recovery mode
3. install CM7 from update file from goo-inside.me...
or:
Plan A (psyke83 prefers this one)
1. root 2.1
2. install GooManager from G Play Store
3. open GooManager, check for updates, download update and enter recovery to install CM7
It looks like you've just completed step 1 from Plan B. Now it's time to visit download mode again and proceed with step 2, then step 3 and you are running CM7.
I tried going from stock 2.1 to CM7...my G5 is from the Middle East, with XSG product code so it was sitting on 2.1 since I bought it...
No matter how many times I tried going into recovery, performing the "4 wipes" and then installing in the correct sequence, it wouldnt leave boot loop...to top it up, my stock JJ2 rom flashed using Odin was also boot-looping...
I only rescued my phone by first flashing i5500XXJED and then going back to my stock ROM...
Was this because I didn't go from 2.2 to CM7?
got CM7 on it no probs ^^
tried reboot via power menu options & ph stuck at boot!?
Spent the better part of next 2 hours getting back to working 2.2...
will try suggestions below...
Edit: CM7 on & working ^^ going to stay away from 'Reboot' option though ;-P
Well, should you find CM7 not stable enough, just go with 2.2 until a stable CM7 relase is up.
You could also try this one: http://www.madteam.co/forum/development/(beta-released)-mad-rom-2-5/
