VNO is a csc file and you would use the csc button in Odin.
you only need to use the csc if you need the network settings for your country.
So what one do I flash to update my phone from its current 2.3.3 firmware to 2.3.4?

I'm sorry...but all i can see is the unsecure kernels and stock kernels but not 'original firmware'. Please advise...i apologise if it's there and i'm just missing it but i've looked.

Read this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 - and just want to make sure I understand the steps correctly to upgrade to XXKF2. Currently on PDA: KE7, Phone: KE4, CSC: KD1 (CPW).
Step 1
Flash this Frankenstein Firmware:
This package has: PDA:XXKF2| PHONE: XXKF2| CSC:XEUKD1.
Download: http://www.multiupload.com/6E5QF3G431
Step 2
Follow the Quick Root Guide.
I take it that it means ChainFire's insecure terminal is this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Step 3
Flash the stock XXF2 kernal.
XXKF2 Stock Kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/HIKNP08JZA
Password: [email protected]
Return to KE7/CSC: CPW
Flash this:
CWP UK: http://www.multiupload.com/U1WNFZ88L0
MD5: A5A59AE6374C7FC814E8901B40F7C8AA
I'm not exactly sure what MD5 means.
Thanks a lot.

Dont worry about md5, it just means it will verify its integrity.
As for the steps, if thats what it says on Intratechs guide, then those are the steps you should follow.

In Intratech's guide there seems to me that there are three sections. A stock kernal section, a Frankenstein firmware section and a rooting sections.
Which is why I thought 1) Flash Frankenstein firmware, 2) Follow the instructions in the rooting section, 3) Flash the stock kernal because the final step of the quick rooting guide says "now you can flash the Stock kernel to get rid of the yellow triangle just like how we flashed the insecure kernel above."

These packages below are not official firmware packages, they are Frankenstein package created due to demand for Firmware with different CSC and modems.

hello guys
i am new to android OS...that means a n00b... but i have successfully root my phone with this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
currently Kies gives me this info:
Current firmware version: PDA:KE2 / PHONE:KE2 / CSC:KD1 (VNO)
Baseband ver: I9100UHKE2
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE2-CL187606 [email protected] #2
Android ver: 2.3.3
Build number: GINGERBREAD.UHKE2
what i would like to do now is to update to the latest firmware is that possible?
thanks
Hi,
If Kies shows no update, you'll have to go the route of manually updating via Odin.
This guide shows you how, don't make the mistake I did of downloading the kernel only tar file - you need the big file around 250/260 MB.

Hi DM-Man,
As far as I know there is no official update for any Chilean device.
The only way to enjoy other versions is as already said to "manually" change via odin.
The "Chile thread" can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104410

You can always update through Odin and get the latest software from e.g. Intratech's ROM thread. Carriers usually do not update that frequently and you may be stuck a long time to a version.
If you want to use the Chilean CSC then you have either the old seldom updateable official ROM option or you have an always manually updateable "Frankenstein" ROM option.

No need to dump just download it from below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928
then just root it using CF-root from below using the XENKJ3 file, which you can then place original FW on SD card and flash back at anytime using cwm
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
or just flash a custom rom using odin or once rooted using cwm
Once rooted you just delete all the crap you don't want off the phone.

Hello,

I saw many of the custom ROMs are XXALF2, my build number ends with XXALEF. Is there any difference?

XXALF2 is newer, UK release.
Other differences are difficult to confirm objectively, Samsung never release changelogs.

All you can do is read the web and the xda forums and some of that is guesswork .

As long as you follow a flashing guide to a TEE (do not skip any steps and do not TL;DR anything). Golden Rule #1 of Flashing: NEVER TICK RE-PARTITION.

Ok. After a lot of reading, I still don't understand much.
I'm new with Samsung devices, so bare with me with my noob questions.
1. The different basebands are for the languages or the system?
I'm from Malaysia with the baseband of DXLE9. Build XXALEF.
Can I flash with different baseband & build? Or the baseband have to be the same?
2. How about rooting?
Should I follow the baseband & build versions or straight away root?
