I'm curious as to which firewall app is optimum and recommended for our phone? And whether or not such an app is even necessary and worth it? Thanks.

I don't think is really necessary.
Anwyay, I use droidwall once in a while, just because I travel abroad quite a lot, and I just need a few apps running with my expensive data connection.
With droidwall, I can block the other ones.

With a fully rooted TB running a custimzed Rom (currently BAMF 1.6 remix), will I still be able to use the built in mobile hotspot function without having to select and pay for a tethering plan once vz changes on the 15th?
I noticed while I was running the Perfect Storm rom that I didn't get any warnings/notifications about the hotspot data usage when I started the app, but on stock and BAMF those warnings pop up...
Anyone know how thats going to work?
No, it absolutely will not work. Unless you pay for it!!
Surely there has to be someway to make it work. I just came from an AT&T Inspire and once I had it rooted with a custom rom it was able to work, even though initially the sim lock prevented the app from even opening if the account didnt have a tethering plan activated.
I beg a developer or anyone that knows how to give a look at how we can do the same thing for the TB.

I am guessing you didn't know what application you were using for tethering, because it sure wasn't the built in one that comes standard with the phone. You're obviously not the first person to ask this and there's plenty of solutions. Google is your friend.
You may not be able to use built in mobile hotspot, but there are other applications out there. Barnacle being one of them.

It absolutely was the mobile hotspot that was built in - or came standard, that worked on the Inspire after a root, unlock, and custom rom. Im aware of other third party apps, such as Wireless Tether, but I prefer the mobile hotspot app because of its functionality and the fact its already there.
It might have been the same "application" as far as you knew, but it might have just been a thin wrapper for something doing the same process as wireless tether for root or barnacle since you were using a custom rom. Unless you want to go and dissemble the code for the apk you are talking about, you really dont know.
You're also comparing apples and oranges. Ignore the fact the thunderbolt has a sim card in it because it's not used like a typical sim card on a GSM phone. The sim card might handle updates and such like any other GSM card, but you cant do much else with it. The phone has an ESN # still and that trumps it as well since you cant just take the phone anywhere network wise. The phone is still tied to a CDMA network more than anything else so you cant think something like a simple sim hack will work for it. It might be using the current GSM standard for 4g, but when it's out of range or on voice, it's using CDMA.
There are reasons why programs like barnacle and wireless tether exist and we're not all using a slightly modded, but more or less the same apk that comes with the phone. The best way for you to to figure out why since a simple "no, it cant be done" doesnt work is to try it yourself.
I am in possession of both bell atrix and ATT atrix. I have to sell one and keep one but I cannot decide which one?
I like to have root access and play with roms. I have a lapdock as well.
what is your suggestion? which one should I keep?
You might be most qualified to answer this question since you have both phones. Maybe run quadrant on each.? Maybe Linpack too? And definately a speed test. You kind of have me wondering now if there is a substancial difference between the two phones. From reading around the forum it does appear the att version is recieving more attention.
Initially I would've said AT&T hands down..but now i'm not so sure. Since Seven's been able to get the Bell Atrix so that we can install At&T pseudo roms and themes..with the Bell atrix you're going to be more open to updates (from international carriers)..and thus more opportunity for potential updates.
Any bootloader bypass will most likely come from the At&t version however..so it makes it a tough call (although i'm sure once it's bypassed on AT&t's version..it won't be too long before it's applicable to the Bell/International versions)
as of now, I would stick with the AT&T version
I know that the bell atrix doesn't have sideloading disabled. i heard that this was an issue with the att one. Also, I'm not sure about the hsdpa+ speeds being blocked, I would check into that.
As suggested I ran Quadrant on both phones. some background about the phones:
1. ATT
original image, no mods, no theme, unlocked rooted, my primary phone
score 2652
2. BELL
modded phone using bell_deodex_v8, unlocked rooted
score 2803
I feel that the mod on BELL phone and/or ATT having more apps on it has to do with the difference in score.
---------------------------------------------
As for side rolling it is possible to open it on ATT if you have root.

Not to be cynical, but why do you have both and what carrier are you on? And what country? The AT&T seems to get most of the attention here, as well as Motorola's updates tend to arrive in the USA first, but it mostly depends on your preference.
I'm thinking of getting a i717 and I know there are different (but essentially the same) versions, like AT&T, Rogers, Bell, etc.
Does the AT&T version have any special AT&T restrictions? Like not able to install third party apps, not able to tether on other networks, anything?
If AT&T version does have these problems, would they be solved if I flash a custom ROM (an ICS ROM)?
No restriction as far as I know of. But then I rooted my phone and on ICS rom asap after I got the phone. Just flash one of the awesome ICS rom from dev thread and you will be happy with the phone.
It doesn't work well as a boat.
The only restriction that I know about is using the att note on any other network cause the phone is locked to att. As far as third party applications. All you have to do is go to security and make sure unknown sources is checked to install third party apps. As far as the network lock att can issue you a subsidy unlock code and your good to go.

AT&T version will only tether with an AT&T sim card in it using the stock tether app (It will say "Invalid SIM or no mobile data" if you try)
However you can use just about any tethering app on the market to get around this restriction.
Thanks guys.
Stock unit has near field communication (NFC disabled...easily corrected.

canadagsm.ca has it for $535 now, fully unlocked, rooted and flashed with AWS radio. IIRC I paid $40 more + 2nd day shipping.
and yes its branded AT&T on the front, also does NOT come with headphones.
Hey guys,
A friend of mine just bought a Verizon S4, new in the box. Unfortunately he updated to OF1. He's on the Verizon network, but he's not under any sort of contract. So as far as I know, he should be eligible to have it unlocked by Verizon.
I'm reading that there is no current root method for OF1. If he gets the phone unlocked, will he have the ability to flash a third party (rooted) ROM? Or is he SOL?
All he really wants to do is enable wifi tethering. I know how to do this with root. And I know FoxFi can do this without root, but the lock screen requirement plus giving them the ability to snoop all traffic via trusted certificate sets off too many alarm bells for my liking.
Thanks.
Edit: I mixed up sim unlocking and bootloader unlocking, so disregard all that. I'd delete the whole thread and start one specific to tethering if I could, but I can't. If anyone has any recommendations on unlocking wireless tethering without root, I'd appreciate it.
I just don't understand, both my & wife's phone can wifi tether straight out of the box. It's under wifi settings. I don't see why you can not either. I have used it to connect my touch computer to Internet or whatever else I need to connect.

I believe it depends on your plan. When he enables the mobile hotspot, it says something about asking the carrier for permission. It then fails and says that his plan does not allow tethering.
I'm on AT&T, not Verizon, so I'm not familiar with the exact plan names. But I think the new "Share Everything" plan or whatever it's called allows tethering. He's grandfathered in on the old unlimited data plan.
i thinking of getting a Duo to play with,
ATT locked is the cheapest, i just want to use it with WIFI only, can i do that?
(i'm with Verizon Visible prepaid), no plan to use it with Visible, just want it to use with WIFI as a toy. can i use it with wifi only?
I did so while waiting several weeks for mine to be unlocked.

yes, and it can easily be unlocked through either AT&T, or Microsoft support will give you the unlock code if you can't get it from AT&T
