OTA update problems! - Motorola Photon 4G

Ok...this freakin' OTA upgrade is pissing me off. My phone was rooted but otherwise stock. The update would dl and reboot. It gets to the Android guy and the progress bar only reaches about 30% then turns to an exclamation mark inside the triangle. Then the phone reboots and says the update failed.
Well, I have done 2 full factory resets and tried the update 4 times. Same thing every time. No other error messages.
Sounds like a hardware issue to me. Any suggestions?

Same thing happened to me......except my phone would totally boot up and got to the normal homescreen then just for no reason abt 15 seconds in to the homescreen it would just power off on its own and then go to either 1. the moto screen and say failed to boot 2. red exclamation point phone 3. moto screen with rsd services......what I did was charge my battery fully and then download the update from here posted by yay4juggs i think.....then flash it using rsd lite.....its pretty easy.....just didnt work for me the first time because my battery ended up being below 50%.....
link>>>>>>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233887

I can do that but there is no reason why the phone shouldn't take the official update. There are 2 other Photon users in our office. One rooted and one not. Both had no issues doing the update successfully the first time. Which tells me there is something wrong.

Seems I have deleted the Protips.apk and need to re-install it. Can someone send this to me please?
**EDIT...NM. Got it.

I havd the same issue. Rooted only. It would dl the ota then install about 30% then reboot to homescreen and promps me that instalation failed..if any one have any insight please do tell.

Restore missing Phone icon without hard-rest

So I ran across this article today about improving voice quality http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d...r-vocoder-settings-improve-voice-quality.html
After trying this method when I rebooted phone, low and behold my missing phone icon was back on the lockscreen! What the heck? Figured I'd better let everyone know my findings!
Any idea why the phone icon disappeared? I got the same prob and I searched for like half an hour thru the phone

If you did the update you will lose your phone icon. You need to go into HTC updates as there is another update available in there if you hav not done that one. It will give you your phone icon back after you update and soft reset your device.
I had to keep checking for the update before it actually showed available.
ota
I did the OTA update and still had phone icon
I did a hard reset and while the phone icon returns, as soon as you cange the lock screen icons, it's gone again. You will have to download the update mentioned previously.

Make sure to go into settings, software updates and check the HTC one. If it doesn't come up, keep checking throughout the day. That is what I had to do after I hard reset when device after taking the 1st update.
You will need the additional software update to get your phone icon back as that update does not stick on a hard reset. It will show up without it, but once you change it will not be available again like mentioned.
Strange... You may be right though my icon is back

[Q] Update partially worked, could use some advice

I installed p3's prerooted gingerbread last night following the instructions in another thread here. To the best of my knowledge each step completed successfully. However, I have noticed a number of small things that indicate to me that not everything worked 100% the way it should. Can you provide thoughts on how to fix the following issues?
1)I cannot access blur or the updated blur widgets. I've cleared the default app settings under manage applications for go launcher, but everytime I click home go launcher is used.
2)I went to freeze the bloat and noticed none of the blur apps were listed in titanium backup (probably explains the above problem)
3)I went to do a factory reset via recovery (power up with vol down pressed). I accessed android recovery, but it just sat there with the green android and the yellow exclamation point. A battery pull was required to restart my phone. A factory reset from the settings menu worked, but did not resolve these problems
4)My free RAM is lower than I expected after a boot, about 100.
5)I am experiencing audio lag as I was prior to the v6 script in froyo.
Any ideas? I know people has used the sbf to go back from the OTA, but has anyone used it to go back form p3's update?
When you see the android with the exclamation point you have to press vol up and down at the same time

Just checking but did you and back to froyo and do a factory reset. It sounds like something went wrong in one of those processes. I'd retry the whole thing over. SBF first and factory reset before the phone has initial boot.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Yeah, I let it boot prior to ding the factory reset after the sbf. Question is how do I wipe before the initial boot? Once the sbf is done it just booted up, I believe.
I agree, sounds like you didn't factory reset. Unfortunately to advice the best results when upgrading you should sbf, factory reset and instal as little as possible, which in this case would be root and system recovery, then upgrade.
Oh and yes, you can safety sbf back, even from the rooted version.

Reboot into recovery mode, personally I think the factory reset works better this way rather than from the privacy menu.

So just so I'm clear about this, do I re-activate the phone before or after the SBF or the factory reset.

Sbf, then factory reset. Boot the phone up, the first thing it should do is ask you to activate. It's right there in the first time setup. You can't not do it.

When I try to make phone calls (even to voicemail), my screen goes black except for the status bar, my phone vibrates a bit, and then I get a message that says "Sorry! What ROM you running? Modem? Kernel? Or is this a stock phone (If so what version of software)?

Weird, I had this problem, but mine was specific to one contact. ALL other contacts numbers I dialed, either useing 7 or 10 digits, in either stock or Go Dialer, would work just fine.
When I would try to call my work, it would crash. It was only my work number and it sucked. Cause I'm in school, and deliver pizza on weekends, and when you can't call the store it sucked at times.
It was stock froyo, voodoo stock kernel. Reset fixed it.

Thank you for your responses so far. To be honest though, I don't really have any idea how to do any of that. My phone is not rooted, although now I am strongly considering it. However, there seems to be an overload of information on how to go about doing it and different methods that don't seem to always work. Also, I don't know how to find the "stock" ROM. Do you guys have any links that you would recommend as being helpful? Sorry for being such a newb.

Alright I used the steps listed in the top link that you gave me to odin the stock rom and pit file, but it did not solve the problem. An example of my problem is when I try to call my voicemail, I'll sometimes hear the automated response voice asking for my pin#, but the dial pad doesn't show up as normal for me to type it in. And the screen freezes up for a minute or so until the call ends.
Another possibly related problem is that when I push the power button to turn on the screen, it doesn't turn on for about 5 seconds, whereas it normally turned on right away. This all started after I put some music (about 30 songs) onto the SD card and deleted a few files that I thought weren't important (but maybe they were?).
Which stock rom did you use to start fresh with the pit file and what rom are you on now?...just want to make sure you did everything correctly because a pit file and stock flash should eliminate any of you force close issues...unless when you went back to whatever rom you're on now you and
Might have missed a step...what rom did you use to flash along with the pit file? And what is the rom you want to be on when all is said and done?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I used the ED05 FROYO rom, and I assume that's the one I'm still on. I did everything as listed up until the in step five because I don't have a recovery to odin. If I was supposed to keep going after that point, then I'll try it again, but it seemed like I could probably stop as long as I didn't mind having the stock rom. I'm alright with the stock rom for now as long as my calling starts working again.
If you want to stay stock then you did what you were supposed to, that's why your messaging is back and running..if you do ever want to switch rom. Follow those same instructions but complete step 5 and use the recovery that is suggested for the rom you want to flash. Odin that recovery and boot immediately into recovery with the three finger method and follow the roms instructions to flash your new rom.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
The problem is not resolved. I first used the stock rom, and then I tried the powerwashed rom. My two problems still remain:
1. Screen still takes about 5 seconds to light up when I hit the power button (when phone is on)
2. I dial voicemail, but as soon as I do, the screen goes blank and I don't hear the response until about 10 seconds later when the voice says "please try again later" and it hangs up. Sometimes the screen doesn't go blank, but it freezes up and I am unable to dial my pin #. This situation also occurs when I call other numbers, although if they stay on the line long enough, eventually it will work. Sometimes it causes a force close, but not always.
So since I've tried starting over with the stock rom, and that hasn't solved the problem, is it possible that this isn't a software issue?
If you've Odined back to stock ED05 and it hasn't been resolved you can probably get Verizon to send you a CPO replacement (assuming you still have warranty left).

Okay I have one last resort to try and I don't know if it would make a difference but it works for me if I ever have an issue I can't figure it out.
Open Odin, remove your battery and put your phone in download mode.
click the pit button and select the atlas 2.2 pit file.
Click the pda button and select the EB01 VZW file.
Make sure the repartition box is checked and click start.
When Odin is done , insert your battery and reboot your phone and you'll be on eb01 modem and all...run that for a day and see if you have the problems with your voicemail, and your screen. if you don't we'll go from there on getting you off of stock if you desire...links to follow in a minute...but I think this will fix your issues
VZW eb01...

[Q] S3 freezing or switching off

In the last few days my phone has continuously been switching itself off or freezing and the only way to get it to work again is pulling the battery or resetting it. The phone is stock, running Android 4.1.2 with firmware I9300XXELLA.
I did notice the phone had switched itself off a few times before now, but now it has got to the point where its happening all the time. I've also noticed that when the phone is booting back up after the lock screen appears the message "Currently unable to download please try again later" is coming up (which I think is more than likely the problem, but when I do attempt to update the phone it says its up to date).
So far I've tried running without an SD card, clearing Touchwiz homes data and switching off auto updates but these have made no difference. If anyone can offer any help it'd be really appreciated as the last thing I want to do is exchange the phone as it can be a pain in the butt.
Tried factory reset? I would suggest flashing the same firmware using odin and see if that makes any difference beforehands.

I've only ever used kies so will have to investigate Odin.
Out of curiosity is there actually a manual way to check for updates through Kies, as I can't for the life of me see how too?
If there is an update, kies would show you the next firmware details below your current one I think.

Hi, I'm laso getting the same issue with I9300XXELLA via Kies.
I've reset, cleared the cache and cancelled any restores but still it happening.
I'm going to downgrade to an older version to see if it resolves this.
I had to do a factory reset in the end and that fixed the problem. Still a bit annoying though as it took me a day to get everything back to how it was and like an idiot I forgot to backup my SMS messages and call history even though I had an app installed that could do it (SMS backup+).
Recommend one from ritesh or something. Works like charm every time I used it so far

Fixed
I wanted to test before posting but I ended up installing 4.1.1 then updating to 4.1.2 without wiping. Very strange.
As an update to this thread the problem came back even after I did a factory reset. I didn't get the unable to download error message but I did keep getting the odd freeze. However after a day of doing it the problem weirdly stopped happening and now 'touch wood' is fine again.
I also wiped cache and reset my phone running stock 4.1.2 on O2. The freezing problem seems to have gone, it's been a couple of days now and no issues. I should say that the only thing I haven't put on yet is Flash, I have a feeling it might be problematic?

SDS SYMPTOMS --------- Solution : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091045
Ironically I think the reason my phone was freezing the odd time after I factory reset it was because I didn't have flash installed. After I sideloaded it the phone hasn't had any more issues (this could be a coincidence though).
Ive just ran the eMMC checker that nhariamine linked to and it says that my chip is susceptible to sudden death (VTU00M, revision 0xf1) and is an insane chip.
Does Samsung's most recent firmware address this, an if not can I get them to replace my phone even if it doesn't die?
The second day after I did a factory reset my phone froze once too and it hasn't since then(about a week) I'm still afraid of installing flash. I use Dolphin browser and I can set the user agent to iPad which loads HTML5 versions of videos etc, obviously this only works on sites that have this possibility. I guess I'm trying to wean myself of flash for now.

I have had this same issue for the past week and have just downloaded the eMMC checker and it seems I too have the phone that is susceptible to SDS.
I have noticed though that the phone only freezes when wifi is switched on though. I dont have any problems with wifi off. I downloaded lagfix from the playstore and ran that and it reduced the freezes from about 20 in a day to 3. I didnt realise wifi was the issue for me at that time though so it could be coincidental.
Updating Roms etc has not worked at all for me. If it keeps up for a few weeks i think i will need to change phones as its way too frustrating for a top tier phone to do this.
Same problem here
I've upgraded OTA few days ago... did a factory rest because the phone was slow... and yesterday the problem appeared out of no where!

[Q] AT&T software update

The 4.3 update of my HTC One got 2.8MB downloaded and then stopped. I let it sit for a couple hours and it didn't change at all. I tried several things to "kick" it into motion, but nothing worked (turning on/off data, etc.).
In a desparate attempt to get it to continue, I restarted my phone (bad choice, I see). Now, when I touch "Check for updates" on the "AT&T software update" screen, it doesn't do anything. No dialogs -- nothing.
Is there a way I can clear out the partial download and reset the state of that process and trigger it to start again?
Thanks for any help!

Mine did the same thing. What I found is that it needs Wifi to complete the download. If you restart the phone and let it see Wifi, it should resume the download without any interaction from the user.
Try this
1. I disabled Power Saver Mode and all the options obviously
2. I turned off the option in the Settings --> Power --> Turned off the sleep mode where the data connection gets cut off during long periods of inactivity after the screen is off
3. Went to Settings --> Wifi --> Advanced and then turned on the option for best WiFi performance
4. Set the screen time out to 10 minutes, try to keep the screen from timing out just in case and dont use your phone while it is downloading
5. Powercycled my Router and Modem
6. Restarted the Phone and tried to update then!
GOODLUCK!

A different twist for me...
I'm experiencing a similar issue, but with a twist...
After what looked like a successful DL of the OTA 4.3 OS Update on my AT&T HTC One, the actual update never kicked off.
Now when I touch "Check for updates" on the "AT&T software update" screen, it doesn't do anything. You can see the button move, but you get no response, No dialog, Nothing....
Is there a way I can kick off the DL'ed update file or clear out the [possibly corupted?] download and reset the state of that process and trigger it to start again?
The DL happened Thurs Oct 10th 9AM.. I had a similar type hiccup the last Maintenance Update that AT&T / HTC sent out, and waiting 24 hrs cured that... But, as of now, more than 24 hrs later, No Joy!!
Anyone out there have a fix??
Please Advise.

Lo and behold, 48hrs after the initial failed DL / No Upgrade, I got the "Update available for my Device" pop-up... The DL was a bit faster, at the end the Upgrade kicked off as expected, and all is well...
Patience is one of the most important tools you can keep in your bag-o'-tricks... Good luck to all out there...
