Task Killer - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Someone know why any Task Killer show wrong free memory other than the Running Process of the phone itself?

I suspect you may be referring to the fact that the SGS2 shares it's main memory with the GPU, resulting in the total ram available to android being lower than the advertised 1Gb. Don't worry, that's normal.
If not, you'll have to provide some more details on your question.
Also, Task Killers are generally considered to be very bad news.
Google around, or read this: http://lifehacker.com/5650894/andro...ed-what-they-do-and-why-you-shouldnt-use-them If you want more information.
Basically, they can cause all manner of pain and on a modern device like the SGS2, they're completely unnecessary.

As far as i know it's hard disk manufacturer rate there drivers similar to RAM
Actual:
1MB = 1024Bytes
1GB = 1024MB = 1024 X 1024 = 1,048,576 Bytes
Manufacturer size:
1MB = 1000Bytes
1GB = 1000MB
So
1,000,000 / 1,048,576 = 953.67MB
In the device itself under Running process it shows free and used ram
the sum of those numbers are 724MB(Used: 230MB Free: 494MB)
Android System info shows:
Max: 838MB Free: 507MB
Quick System info pro:
Total: 839MB Free: 508MB Idle: 254MB
Smart System info:
Total: 838MB Free:432MB
All above checked one after the other
There is any common sense?
About the task killers can I use Memory Booster instead? or it's unnecessary?

Hmm.. this!
Android phones do not need task killers, android is based on linux and linux manages memory very well in comparison to say Windows, if it leaves something open it is doing so because it is better for it to be left open, if android then needs more memory it will close applications on its own. If you start to use any task killers you will close apps when they don't need to be closed and if you or android have to re-open them it will use more cpu power and therefore more battery.

Hey, guys!
Im bit "noob" whit android devices becouse this is my first android phone. I allways have been use nokia's phones ( cuz im from Finland ) but the latest nokia phones have been bit disappointment for me. So I bought DEFY. So about task killers. I have used many of those and I have been thinking why my device have been so slow and laggy.. so I googled what is the best task killer and I found that android actually don't need task killer/manager. And then I uninstall my task killer (TasKiller) and reboot my phone and now its not laggy or slow at all!
So I would say don't use any of task killers or managers.

This is not answering my question , i read what undave posted.
I ask about memory booster and about RAM Issue

With the exception of some which mess with swappyness, most memory boosters generally work exactly the same way as a task killer.
Seriously, you have a smartphone with 1Gb of ram, you really don't need to do anything to optimise memory usage. Android really is very good at this all by itself.
Regarding the available ram: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980958

Why if writes 1 GB of RAM on my phone writes 835 MB maximum in task manager?

256MB RAM? How can we be sure?

Hi guys,
I have a serious doubt that s740 has 256MB. I think that OS only thinks that way. These are the arguments for my doubt :
1. I have an application that shows message box with question before it closes. Usually when OS notices that system is low on memory it starts to close applications. Sometimes while this application is in background, message box pops up (not because I tried to close it, OS obviously thinks it is low on memory)
2. I have never seen significantly less than 100MB of free RAM in any applications that shows that information
3. I created an application that loads some text files into a memory. I started it when my device was close to a 100MB of free RAM. Very soon I got OutOfMemoryException although I had 100MB of RAM left!!
4. Once I bought 32GB SD card from eBay. After a test I figure it out that card was 4GB although it appeared to any PC it was 32GB. I saw on the some forums that I was not the only one with that problem. Many face the same when buying SD card from eBay and China. Point of this...it is possible to alter memory controller in order to trick the system.
If there is anyone who saw in any task manager or something less than 100MB of free RAM, please report it here. Also if you know some way we can be sure that there really is 256MB of RAM on our devices please let us know.
I got less than 100MB free RAM ...

Actually you don't.
On your screendump you can see clearly "0.12G" (about 120 MB) free from a totall of 0.18G

Actually, I do.
.12G is used, 61mb free, which comes to a total of .18G
.-ombre-.
Not wanting to nitpick (as the issue mentioned at the start is the question if there's really the advertised 256 MB RAM, which actually appears to be 187 MB), but you're reading the Resco System Info incorrectly.
As you can see on your screendump, your 16 GB (14.83G) storage card is almost full (red bar, 97%) with only about "0.40G" available. This is shown on the right side, just like the ".12G" or about 120 MB.
Whoops, you're right. My bad. I'd suspect that the "missing" mbs are taken up by the os itself? either way, I have yet to run into an out of memory error on this device, and i have constantly up to 5 progs running in the background...

The way OS handles automatic closing of application is rather complicated and does not depend on free memory only.

Windows Mobile 6.1 is still based on Windows CE 5 core, which allows 32MB of memory per process (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_ce#Versions). Bear in mind that you are also using .NET, which in itself is a bit memory-hungry.
All-in-all I think that device has as much memory as advertised and see no reason why it shouldn't.
BTW my s740 has an 128MB of RAM ('not for sale' version)
CPU
CPU Frequency
RAM
Program memory: OS
Program memory
Memory in use
So maybe some of the Roses can be with 128MB only
...When I used my s710 (64MB of RAM) I had a free RAM value about 10MB. Now my s740 with 128MB of RAM but free RAM value still about 10MB. Very very strange

[Q] Ram memory

How much free ram memory xperia mini have ?
And does it have 512mb total ram or something like 418mb ?
Story is the Xperia has 512M of RAM, but 177M or so of RAM are taken up by the O/S. Leaving something along the lines of 335M free for other apps.
I don't know why all the programs that report memory don't show the memory reserved by the O/S.
Would be interested in knowing if such an app exists.
Mike
can u post screenshot of ram memory status ? so if i'am understand u, xperia have 335mb free ram with stock rom ? thats cool

That's the theoretical amount of memory, when I run max kill, I end up with 191MB.
If you go by the utilities they show you total memory its 335mb
Mike
ok, than it have 355mb ram not 512mb is 191mb of ram enought to run hd games ?

It's truly 512MB RAM, but the operating system (Android) also occupies RAM, for example in panamamike's case, the OS uses 191MB for its running so the amount of RAM left for other programs is about 512 - 191 = 355MB RAM.
I haven't tried any HD games but you can watch these videos :

Actually, the math goes like this.
512MB total - 177MB [Hidden by Android for system] - (166-170MB) [Android O/S apps] 22MB [Kernel] approx 143MB available to the user. Max Kill, kills some of the Android O/S stuff, but it starts right back up automatically. I don't know enough to determine if I can really turn some of that stuff off, but ATM I'm just letting it go.
Also note, if we could root the phone, there are applications that SE has installed as part of the O/S that could be removed to free up more memory.
It's a bit disheartening to see such little memory truly available. I don't know what typical HD games need to run.
Mike
i don't understand, if system hide 177mb ram for system, why he(system) double use ram memory ? 1. 177mb and 2. 166-177mb(for os and apps) why ?
never mind, thast cool phone..
Most apps/games store the big files /data on yer sdcard. The app needs to have this feature implemented.

The OS e.g. Android and Touchwiz use up about 100mb RAM for itself leaving only 300-400mb for the user. My HTC Desire S has 768mb but really i can only use 623mb hope this helps.

Is there a way to install a mod to free up some of the RAM the OS uses? Or a lighter android that doesn't use quite as much?

I would recommend a 3rd party launcher like ADW Launcher on Android market very light weight, also a app like memory booster which frees RAM. Their are no such mods to change the file system usage as changing the amount of RAM the system needs could result in a unstable device. I have a Galaxy wifi 5.0 with 512mb RAM and the 200mb left is enough for me without lag etc. hope this helps
I recommend using Advanced Task Killer. It has a very easy interface, and frees up ram quickly.
What does it say for ram on the player.... I have seen 377... and 345.
I have 345 and Im pretty pissed about it.
I have 342mb of RAM available. But I heard that around 100+ mb are dedicated to the gpu on the galaxy s phone, and the galaxy player has the same hardware so should be the same. So I think it still has 512mb of ram, but just 342 is usable by Android.
Have a look at the output of dmesg (e.g. run the following in a terminal and copy the resultant file to your PC to view: dmesg > dmesg_output.txt) and it tells you how much memory you have and how much has been set aside. Note you will probably want to reboot before you do this as otherwise the interesting messages have scrolled out of the kernel message buffer.
I've been using an app called Fast Reboot Pro. It appears to simply close processes that are running in the background. It then shows you how much memory was was freed. I hit every so often and especially when things appear to lag. Seem to work pretty well.

Gingerbread/Samsung has it's own task manager which in turn has it's own widget which does this. No need to install an app for this
I to use fast reboot, find it much more effective than what the player comes with. I also use ram manager pro witch is a very good tool to set different ram profiles, I like "balance (more free memory)" the best. I first select my profile, then I run fast reboot, very effective! The more you run fast reboot, the more memory it frees up, witch is great for big games like asphalt 6. Also, I use zeam launcher, very lightweight, perhaps the lightest, but still a great improvement over touchwiz. Another thing, NO LIVE WALLPAPERS is an absolute necessary! These things eat WAY more ram than they say on taskmanager. THEY CAN EAT 50+ MB OF RAM!! Also, services like widgetlockscreen and such will eat your ram. If you want to play a heavy game, go to running services and kill as many as you can, you can also clear cached apps by hitting the menu button in running services. Hope these tips help you to make the most of our small supply of ram!
Hmm, after more testing, it would appear that wifi burns around 25mb of ram when on! So, if your really short on ram, just turn on airplane mode to kill all antennas. I just played modern combat 3 with 25mb free ram throughout the whole level I had 190mb free originally, that game sure eats the stuff :s The CPU rides at 1000mhz through the whole game, lol, could always use some more of that stuff! That's what oc is for

Reallocating RAM , possible?

Well, we all know the ray has 512 MB of RAM built in. But if you use tools like Android Assistant, it tells you you can only use about 332 MB of it. I searched in other forums and found out, the "hidden" part of the RAM is reserved for the gpu. My question now: is there a way to reallocate the RAM and get some of the reserved available for user apps? Because i constantly get freezes wit oom.
I dont how to do it , but i am also disappoint when i saw ray has only 315+ RAM , sony site says ray has 512 MB
I am sure if we try to re allocate it we will get problems , why not you try cyanogenmod ?
it is faster and less RAM intensive
i am running on cyanogenmod 7.2 , but if i use launchers like spb shell 3d , my free ram, even at reboot, max caps at 110 mb. thats nothing.

i think is possible but it will be worst! most of the phone speed is given by the gpu (example samsung galaxy ace has 800MHz but lower gpu alocated memory and the phone speed is a disaster)
I think the only way to 'gain' some extra RAM is enabling SWAP.
On my old samsung, I once had a swap partition of 256 to extend the memory.
The good: you have real extra ram
The bad :
-swapping is slowing down the phone, as the sd-card speed is never sufficient.
-SD-card will die sooner, as you read/write a lot to same partition.
So swapping is not advised to my opinion, and others.
Some way to make some memory free (and speed up your phone) :
Use a clean rom (like 4pda.ru) and with the "autostarts" tool, try to disable android apps that automatically try to start itself at boot, startup or other events.
I found out that a lot of android apps try to start themselves even when you plug in the power cable (google maps for example), or connectivity changed, application installed etc.
With the autostarts tool (or rom toolbox) you can influence these triggers to prevent apps to startup themselves in the background.

[Q] 1 gb ram and apps issues

Hello,
I have 3 questions if you may help:
1. how do I close an application? for example in the iphone i would just open the running apps and close it by long click - here I dont get it? for example if I listen to a radio and then i clean the application on the task manager the radio keeps playing....
2. The follow up question will be what is the best task manager on android?
3. Ram issues - I understand that 1gb ram is more than enough - however on the task managr it shows me maximum of 280 mb free on the ram - is it normal? or im doing something wrong??
Thanks!!!
The best task manager is none. Android uses ram in a totally diffrent way to IOS and windows. Android keeps most of it's free ram engaged, this way it can access and allocate ram much faster than how ios handles free ram. All you need to know is, on android, the less fee ram you have, the smoother things will be.
