[Q] USB OTG possible on our phones? - HTC EVO 3D

hey guys. i haven't seen any mention of this so I'm assuming it can't be done, but I figured i'd ask to be sure.
is it possible to enable/use OTG usb host mode on our phones? I have that function on my Xoom using Hammerhead 2.1 with the Tachi kernel and it's pretty good...and my OTG cable brought a second one that i would like to use with the phone when necessary.
any info on whether this is possible now, whether it is being worked on, or whether it will never be done, is appreciated!

It will probably be enabled when ICS comes out later this year.

That sounds like we are positively going to run Ics on our phones?

Whether it's official from HTC/Sprint or CM, it will be on my phone, for sure.

hdmi out

hi guys,
after abit of help. i bought a hdmi adaptor, from amazon this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007K8NNOA/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00
so that i would be able to play content from my phone straight through to my tv. I also bought a new hdmi lead and i connected using the phone charger and lead that came with the phone.
When i plug it all together it shows on the phone that hdmi out is connected and i can display video or photos on the external device. But no matter what i do i cannot get a picture to display on the tv.
Am i doing something wrong? Or does it never work? I tried rebooting the phone i tested the hdmi lead to make sure it works. Is there another option on the phone i need to select to i need to use a different app?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Are you on the stock rom/kernel? I can't say I use this feature as much as I thought I would, but I have noticed some kernels break this feature (though I can't say which ones anymore - been a while) and I've seen some roms break this as well. I don't know if this was a placebo or what, but I also noticed that it broke for me after removing some of Sprint's or HTC's bloatware... I think it was the transfer app, but it doesn't make much sense to me why.
I'd try it on a full stock rom/kernel first to make sure it's not software related. Then try it on multiple TVs. I actually had an experience once where it wouldn't display on my TV, but worked fine on my HDMI enabled pc monitor - same symptoms you're describing. Tried different kernel, all was better. But I've also read about people just having a bad mhl adapter or bad hdmi cable too.
As above it needs to be supported by rom and kernal. Try a stock configuration and see what happens. If that fails it might be a faulty adaptor, these cheap ones are known to fail easily.
i appreciate your guys help. i am on stock rom/kernal. my tv is pretty new. The phone is showing as having a hdmi connection so wasn't sure if it could still be the adaptor? i will try it on another tv at the weekend. if it still doesn't work maybe send the adaptor back?
so it should display whilst playing a film through the stock video player? i dont need to use a special programme or anything else?
It automatically displays whatever is on the phone's screen. No need for anything special beyond plugging it in. It could still be a faulty adapter even though the phone shows hdmi.
Another idea might be to double check your tv out settings on the phone. Make sure those are correct.

Maybe just maybe, have it all plugged in before turning it on, then try.

I can't remember exactly. It's in the phone settings. I'm on the ice cream sandwich leak so I think it's a little different.

ive looked everywhere in the phone settings and cannot find it. also i read through the manual and must be really dumb as i cannot see anything in there about it either.
@ scariola thanks i tried your suggestion as well.
i would be really interested to hear if anyone ever got this to work?
You have to have it plugged into the wall outlet as well. Just a thought
just an update guys i tried it on an oldish portable tv and it worked? so no idea why it doesn't work here at home???
still thanks for all the help.

USB OTG Cables

I just ordered my USB OTG Cable today. For those that don't know what it means, it stands for USB On-The-Go. Basically, it allows you to read files from a portable flash drive straight from your phone. This will only work with a compatable kernel and since we have an ICS Source the developers said it was already enabled within the kernel.
This will be my first time to have ever used one and I was just wondering the pros and cons of having something like this.
I need some feed back~~
well from my POV these are my pros and cons...
PROS:
Extra space (whatever you can get that hooks up to usb, 2tb!!)
CONS:
Lugging around the extra crap
You have a good con list ziggy46..lol
I was concerned about that as well. But I have a 500gb portable external hard drive and it has tons of crap that I can probably watch or listen to on my phone. I can't shove everything on my 32gb sdcard. My 1T sits on my desk for my wife's photography thing she does.
My friend has an OTG cable and he uses his usb mouse to control his phone.
It's pretty cool but really gimmicky.
Hmmm...interesting. Thanks for the tip
if your otg cable works out good for you let us know. i might buy one and get a 2tb usb hdd.
btw, if things are fomatted in NTFS you might need to make a script for them to mount to the phone...
HTC doesn't support USB OTG in general. It will require a kernel hack. It didn't work in GB. I am not sure about ICS.
From what kozmick mentioned in his kernel thread it was enabled in the kernel. Im hoping it works if not then I hope it works on the N7 or my wife's SGS2.

There are things enabled in ics kernel that are not in gb kernel. 2 way call recording is one example.

I still have my OTG cable from my Nokia N8. I wonder if it will work..
Normally USB otg won't work on an HTC device. According to faux its something about the USB stack.
Ok. So I FINALLY got my USB-OTG Cable and even with the enabeled kernel it does not work. Kinda bummed but the part was cheap so its not a major loss. It works on ky wife's SGS2 and I read that it will work on the Idolian tablet I just ordered so I'm cool with that. I'll try and sell the other 3 that I won't need.

Just wondering, for the usb otg on the sgs2, did you need to connect the ext hd with power source? Or is the sgs2 able to power the ext hd?
It was able to power it just fine. I was just using a 2GB flash drive to test and you can see the led light come on. Not sure how well it could keep the charge up tho.

I think it doesn't work with the custom kernels, but I believe the stock kernel supports it

I would like to see this working on our phone. Seems pretty damn useful.
Anyone find a solution because before stumbling upon this thread I actually bought one as well but only for .99.

i have one as well and i want to hook up my PC joystick on my phone.
i have Energy Rom with Faux kernel, but i doesn't work.
my friend has One S, which works fabulously with OTG.
any solutions?

Clip-on Gamepads

What are some good gamepads that can be clipped on to the EVO 4G LTE? I have a PS3 controller and that works good, but maybe there's something that can fit onto the EVO 4G LTE.
I was looking at http://www.amazon.com/Gametel-Porta...id=1346540532&sr=8-8&keywords=Gamepad+android but it kinda looks "meh" due to the odd looking D-PAD

The way that ICS works for PS3 controllers is that after you plug it in the first time it will automatically pair with the controller over bt so you won't need the wire again afterwards.
As i'm not sure whether the phone can charge the controller or not, in which case if it does i wouldn't want it sucking power off the phone during use, i would just get the one without wires for less stuff to lug around.
No idea if using the controller will interfere with BT headset functionality if you use any with the phone, but i do know that when i'm listening to music autotether doesn't work properly so that might be something to think about.

Awesome! I saw a review when it first came out. It was around $50 at the time. Definitely getting one now!
Pretty easy to replicate the design, its off to blender I go to build one.

What to do with my 3D?

I moved from the state's to Germany and am trying to find a good use for my 3D running Viper Rom since its Sprint CDMA and doesn't work in Europe. I currently have the HTC One X quad core.
I was kind of hoping USB OTG has been hacked to work on it so I could run it as a small pc (monitor mouse and keyboard) or something, but I could not find any info to get that working (searched and searched).
Its not worth me selling since it has a bad esn and only would sell for 100 USD or so. Then minus eBay and paypals fees. Bla bla... Too much work cor not enough pay..
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance!

OTG works fine on the Evo 3D if you use a kernel like ButteredToast that supports it.
You might also look into GrooveIP that uses Google Voice and works pretty well over WiFi and the international calls are pretty inexpensive over GV.
If you really want to use it as a mini PC there is a thread here that discusses how to run Ubuntu Linux on it.
And worse comes to worse, you can download some 3D movies over WiFi and connect it to a 3D TV via an MHL/HDMI adapter.
I plan to keep my Evo 3D's around for a while after I upgrade for these and other reasons, and the development for it is still pretty active for this device.

Ok, I tried the buttered toast kernel. What Rom do I need? Does that link point out everything that's needed?
I was going to try the google voice thing, but I couldn't set up a phone number since now I have no US cell number to confirm a text or something like that. I don't remember exactly because its been a little while since I tried it.
Thanks for your input!

The OP of the OTG thread has most of what you need to get it to work. Make sure you use an OTG adapter that will let you supply power of use an active USB hub since the Evo 3D doesn't provide power to the OTG device(s).
You can get a new US phone number from Google Voice when you sign up and it doesn't have to match your cell phone. GrooveIP will be able to receive calls on that number in addition to making outgoing calls.
Good luck!

Head-phones use to work fine with HTC Evo 4G LTE

Hello All...
Before the JB update for the HTC Evo 4G LTE.
My apple headphones use to work just fine with this
incredible phone.
Now after the update it doesn't even recognize it!
How can i get to fix this issue to use my Apple Headphones again?
I already have a pair of bluetooth headphones from Plantronics.
They work fine but sometimes all you want is to plug and play.
Can anyone help me with this issue.
Thanks
Android Version 4.1.1
HTC Sense version 4+
Have you tried plugging your Apple headphones into a different device to make sure they are working as they should? On that note, have you tried plugging in a different set of headphones into your EVO to see if they work?

I've had this issue before with my car aux cable and a replacement was the only fix, but I remember somebody tried this:

Check it out and good luck!
