My phone recognizes that it's plugged into the laptop, but my laptop never sees the phone. I can't connect Odin, or even see the memory card. I've installed the correct drivers many times now. Is this symptomatic of a bad cable? I would think that if the cable was bad the phone wouldn't recognize the computer either, but I'm new to this.
Try to clean your ports and use the og cable with your fascinate.

I always use the original cable that camne with my phone....gonna clean my ports and try again. Never really thought of that; obvious really, now that you mention it.
Are you on a 64 bit Windows? This has been a problem with Odin and Heimdall not recognizing the correcut Samsung USB composite device. You could try uninstalling the drivers, then reinstall them using compatibility mode of XP or something like that if you are using Windows that is.

Two ways to know if it is the cable....
1) try a different cable....they are super cheap
2) try on a different PC and see if that recognizes it

I installed the drivers in windows vista provided in the walkthrough thread, but odin will not see the phone. I'm using my desktop, this combination worked flawlessly on my windows 7 laptop, RIP.
A few things
First off, make sure you're in download mode (get to via holding the volume down button while turning on the phone), and not Recovery
Try a different USB cable (the official one if you're not using it already)
Try a different port on your computer
Try reinstalling the drivers
Repeat the above several times if need be. It seems like the phone has trouble connecting to the computer for a lot of people.
one thing I hadn't considered is not the micro usb cable, but the EXTENSION cable I was using. be sure only to use the micro usb cable when using odin. thanks, your post made me think of that.
Download pdanet to your windows, and it will come with samsung drivers, worked great for me

the drivers weren't the problem. as my previous post said, it was the extension cable I used, not the drivers.
I always use the usb that came with the phone-- I didn't think it made a difference but does for our fascinate and DX
So my USB port is somehow not working with data on my vibrant. It worked intermittently but now I cannot connect to my pc or other pcs at all. I think I may have bent something, not sure. But the real question is, can I flash GB bootloaders via another method then ODIN. something like SGS kernal flasher? or am I SOL. I read on the Simply Honey 3.8 rom thread that people were going from simply honey 3.3 to 3.8 without loading the GB bootloaders.
Thanks!
Do you have USB debugging enabled?
Yes, the reason why I think my usb port is broken because sometimes I can get a connection if I hold the cable a certain way when connecting to the pc but when I let go the pc reverts to usb device not functioning. Not good, and hard to reproduce.

you dont need to bootloaders to do it, i dont trust odin so i dont have them
i flashed 3.3 from 2.8 then 3.8 in the cwm app then any addons with rom manager, everything seems to work fine for me

Have you tried with different USB cables?
I have tried different cables, just that it used to work and now no longer does

When your phone is plugged in, does it indicate it's connected to the PC or both of them don't acknowledge it?
Sometimes the phone acknowledges it, sometimes it doesn't. This is what makes me think it may be a problem with the port.

Use a different computer and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't, let me know so we can try to figure out what's wrong.
My computer isn't recognizing my phone, it just charges it. I've installed and reinstalled HTC Sync many times, restarted the computer, restarted the phone, tried different cables, tried different computer. I've called Sprint Tech Support and they couldn't get it working either. Nothing is working. I'm using a 64-bit Windows 7 computer is that matters. PLEASE HELP
In your phone's settings --> Connect to PC, the option is not there to change what type of action you want when you plug it in?
I've tried to change the default connection type but that didn't make a difference. Still only charges the phone and doesn't recognize it.
I wonder if it can still read the drive if you mount it in the recovery console?
If I do what?

I just factory reset my phone and it still won't connect.

Are you using the original EVO 3D cable, or an extra one from around the house? Some of the MicroUSB cables are just for charging.
If you use the original cable and still have issues, then I would assume it's time to dig into device manager on your computer and see if there are any conflicts there.
I'm using the original one. I also tried a Samsung one. I'm beginning to think the problem is with HTC Sync because I tried an Evo Shift and HTC Aria and those weren't recognized either. The Aria worked one time.

1. Pull down the notification bar press charge and change it to disk drive and press done.
2. USB 2.0?
I'm having this issue as well.
I've bought a new SD Card and USB cord for the phone to see if that solved the issue but no luck.
The phone was working prior to the other day. It is about two weeks old.
The left attachment is the most recent the one on the left was yesterday.
I've also used HTC Sync with no success

I've tried different ports as well as different computers.
On the laptop with windows 7 it won't install the drivers either
I've got time left on my 30 day exchange so i'm gonna swap it in and find out if it's the phone or not.
So it was recognized at the Rogers store after he took off the back and said the micro SD card wasn't inserted fully. I got it home and it still isn't working, could it be a driver conflict issue with windows 7 64 bit?
Tried 4 diffefnet computers, some 2 with HTC Sync and 2 without. Didn't work. I've tried 3 different cables. 2 original HTC cables and a Samsung one, still didn't work. Still doesn't work. Any other suggestions?

I've also used 3 diferent micro SD cards and factory reset it twice and used both 32 bit OS and 64 bit. Tried XP, Vista, and 7.

I've also made attempts on other computers with no luck with installation, but as i believe i said in a previous post when i took it to the store the guy working had it show up on his computer
have you guys tried deleting HTC sync altogether and installing JUST the evo3D drivers, and NOT the entire sync program ? I've never seen anyone have this mush trouble before. Also, what are you trying to do? mount sd card to comp? use ADB? tether?
Plug in ur phone and turn on HTC sync. Go in to settings, applications, and look for usb debugging. Turn it on and off til ur computer and HTC sync recognize the phone. Had the same problem and this fixed it

I have tried just installing the drivers. Didn't work. I'm trying to mount it as a disk drive. I tried enabling and disabling USB debugging for like 2minutes straight, that didn't work either. It's weird because now my Evo Shift is recognized but not my Evo 3D

My vibrant usb no longer works, Phone charges and detects usb cable (option to mount) but my PC doesn't show phone in device manager...
I've tried cleaning usb, multiple usb cables, and different PC's!
Has anyone had problems like this before? I find it hard to believe out of the blue my usb hw failed... Hoping this is some how fixable... because I need odin access to the phone
any help would be appreciated, thanks
make sure you have drivers?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Yes, I've tried new and old drivers making sure to properly remove them before trying the other... Problem is even if drivers weren't installed Device manager would indicate a unusable or unrecognized device? all PC's i've tried don't indicate any device connected.
My other vibrant works fine on all PC's only my Gf's is having a problem...
Could be usb failing I had to send mines in 2 weeks ago and they replaced the usb at no cost. Just make sure you call the galaxy s support if you plan on sending it in to fix. I got ny phone back within 4 days.

One reason you can get "device not recognized" is if your USB cable is going bad. Cheap aftermarket cables don't have good strain relief and can cause one of the data wires to break. If it was recognized yesterday but not today, there's a pretty good chance the cable's bad.
maybe try a different port on the back of the pc.
