Hey, I was just wondering if it's possible that the stock charging cable is able to charge my phone, but has malfunctioned somehow to not let it be recognized by my computer?
Basically I've been trying to get my computer to recognize my phone for a week now.
I'm no expert with this stuff but I'm certainly not a noob. I've been rooted and have been flashing ROMs for months now and have odin'd many times before. Just one day none of my USB drives would work. I formatted my computer, reinstalled my drivers and i know the USB ports are functioning because they recognize other devices.
But when i plug my phone in i get "unknown device" where it used to recognize it once i had the samsung drivers installed. I've tested on a brand new computer, with samsung mobile drivers installed and same result, "unknown device"
Is Heimdall a viable option at this point? I've never tried that program but I have nothing to lose i guess, but someone can save me some precious time if they know it's not going to work, please let me know
P.S. this isn't an issue of not having debugging on or my computer seeing it as a cd-rom, the computer won't recognize the device with samsung drivers installed.
Have you not tried another cable?

unfortunately, i don't have any other microUSB - usb cable to test out. I was just going to buy a new charger since the Verizon store is down the street from me, but I figured I'd ask since I won't be able to go until tomorrow morning
From DroidXcon at AC:
"uninstall the drivers, reboot your computer, reinstall drivers, pull out the battery of your phone connect it, put your phone into download mode and let the composite drivers install...then unplug pop your battery back in , turn on the phone, throw it in debugging mode. and connect and see if it configures"
Thanks Kevin, I've actually been tracking that thread since yesterday and the issue for me is that the composite drivers won't install on its own which is really strange to me as i've not had this problem in the past. I also tried doing everything from scratch on a new computer and got the same results... anyway, i didn't get around to it but will try heimdall tonight and see if anything changes

Thanks for the suggestion. I got it figured out. Turned out to be my charging cable. It charges my phone but won't let my pc recognize it as a device. I tested it out with a coworker's captivate charger and it worked
Some micro USB cables are manufactured only to charge. The rocketfish brand cables from Best Buy, for example. It seems to me the manufactures simply leave out a connecter on one or both ends of the cable, or leave out one of the lines all together. Try another cable.
I just saw your using a stock cable... I'll post anyway in case this helps someone else. Good luck!
I've had this awesome tablet for just a day and loving it so far. Only issue I have right now is when I connect it to my Windows 7 PC, it is not detected at all. I have installed the PC suite (EeePAD_PC_Suite_v1_0_37.rar) which is suppose to install the requisite USB driver, but no luck.
It charges fine when I plug it into the wall so the wire is okay. Any ideas what maybe happening?

Most phones come with the drivers on them to install most functions when plugged in via PnP. I would test and see if uninstalling what you installed and then trying does. I could be wrong though. This is my first tablet and I don't have it in hand yet
i noticed that mine doesn't charge yet it does connect...make sure you restart too
I was told it will charge just at a much slower rate.
Problem solved. I did a bunch of things so I'm not exactly sure which one really fixed it. But rebooting the tablet seems to have done the trick. Also, the front USB ports on my PC have gotten a little strange. If I plug the USB connector all the way it wont work. I have to pull it out ever so slightly to get a successful connection.
Thanks for the quick response guys
No Matter what I install It still shows as an MTP device and that's it. Can not see it in any version of Windows.. any one have this issue. thanks
I got mine to work by using another cable.
I installed the newest htc sync and got the updated drivers that came with the install. I restarted my phone several times, even restarted my computer several times. But I can still not see my phone on my computer. I want to do a factory restore and want to back up all the stuff from my phone. How can I get my phone to show up on my computer again? It charges from my computer, but there is no recognition of it when I plug it in, or no option on my phone saying which I would like to do when the phone is plugged in. I have the default set to data drive.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Not at all showing up in my device manager. I unplugged my mouse and saw it leave device manager. Plugged my phone in and nothing appeared in it. Put mouse back in and it showed up right away. I'm looking at all the usb connections and the mouse is the only one that is coming up.

Just uninstall, try a different port, a different cable would help too, since it sounds like your cable is damaged if it isn't even showing up in device manager, which practically shows everything, no matter what the issue.

Uninstalled htc sync, htc driver, and then restarted. Installed it again and still no luck. My phone charges when it's plugged into my computer and even can tell when I unplug the cord from the computer. I haven't really changed anything on either my phone or computer that could have changed it from working. It was at one point working. I'll try with my sisters blackberry cord as I don't have any other cords for just the amaze.

Let me know what happens then, cause so far it's pointing to your usb cable if it's no being detected at all.

Sure enough it was the usb cable. I tried my sisters blackberry cord and as soon as I plugged it in I heard the new device popup sound. I wouldn't even think of a faulty cord as it was charging fine, I just figured it was something with my computer. Thanks so much for the help.

I saw it happen before, so I figured that much, you're welcome.
First, i apologize if there is already a thread regarding this, but everything ive came across searching on google/xda has come to no avail.
i just got the i777, plugged it into my computer and nothing happens. on my phone it says "mtd connected" and charges.
ive turned on usb debugging, installed samsung kies, installed the drivers, tried the "dial *#7248#(or whatever it is), ive tried 3 different usb cables, all the usb ports on my laptop (brand new alienware), and also 2 other laptops. nothing works
my computer also makes the sound that its been connected. if i go into device manager it shows as Other devices > 7 CDC's with the yellow exclamation mark
if someone .could PLEASE help me it would be much obliged, all i want to do is start flashing again

Probably a bad usb connector on your phone. What rom are you currently on?
I was fearing this. Its all stock, not even rooted.
IF i have to get a new usb port, do i have to do any soldering?
When I had this problem I downloaded multiple different drivers and eventually found ones that worked . Try Google searching i777 usb drivers. I downloaded ones that worked from softpedia actually.

No soldering required. It's just a ribbon cable that connects to the main chip. Took me about an hour from start to finish, but i was being really careful.

He has said his computer recognizes the device, albeit it sees it as an unknown device. And it makes a sound when plugging it in. This tells me it's not a usb port problem but a driver problem. I have had this same problem. As I stated above. Even after installing kies it still didn't recognize it. I had to install the android sdk package, open the program and update, and then it still wouldn't recognize it. I had to download separate usb drivers for the phone as well. Who knows why, some computers or operating systems just have a harder time with the drivers. That's the problem in my opinion. Here's hoping it's not a usb port problem. Also this would prevent charging if it were a faulty usb port on the phone wouldn't it?

I wonder if the OP tried this on a computer with Windows XP. I've noticed Vista and 7 seem to have a hard time discovering/installing some usb devices. As for it not charging also..I think the pins inside the port are used separately for charging and connecting to pc.
My computer recognized my phone fine back when it was the Captivate, but it has a really hard time with my GS2. It often will say "invalid hardware id" or not show up at all. Usually it's fixed by swapping ports.
Hello,
I'm having a problem with the S4.
When I plug it into the computer (Running Windows 7), the device starts charging and I can sync files with the device.
But, it starts reconnecting, the USB connection just keeps disconnecting and connecting over and over again, nonestop.
But the device is still charging, only the connection to the computer stops.
Its going back and forth drom cd installer to mtp? Drivers are installed?
Does someone know what the problem might be?

I had a similar issue, the problem was damage to my USB ports. Try different ports.
When this was happening to me I found the problem to be the cord I was using, with the littlest of bumps it would loose connection. Try swapping to another cord and see if it fixes your problem.

^ This. I've got quite a few cables that I cycle between for different instances, and there are one or two I have that seem to be really finicky.

Don't know why it happens but ROMs like jellybeans4 bypass the installer and go straight to mtp which fixed it for me.

"Thanks" are always appreciated!

I had a similar issue where it would constantly disconnect and i could never get it to connect long enough to get past the installer, but it only happened on my desktop and on all usb ports, so i rooted using my laptop which didn't have the problem, and installed Hyperdrive, and now i can connect to my desktop just like i was before, but without all the disconnects. so it seems like it was a combination of my phone and my desktop not getting along nicely, but with a custom rom everything is fine.
Ahh now that I think about it the newest Samsung USB Drivers might help him also.
