Random Reboots and Sense force closing - HTC EVO 3D

Ever since the download of the 2.08 upgrade, about every 20 mins the phone reboots on its own and then if u lock it, it won't unlock at all, u have to pull the battery to get it back on, and then every once in awhile it will actually come up saying sense has forced closed and then it reboots itself...it is not rooted yet but Hell if I'm having problems with me not messing with it, I don't even want to tackle rooting it....has anyone else had problems or do I just have a dud
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App

Since the update I've had some issues too, but not nearly as often as you. Sense launcher usually has to reload about twice a day which really bugs me, but it doesn't take too long. I haven't had issues with it rebooting on its own though, although it freezes up occasionally and I have to do a battery pull.

sprint says (i spoke with them today about this, had to get to tech 3 ) they are waiting for a fix from HTC to fix the random reboot issue and they are well aware of this issue as it is effecting alot of 3d evos.. personally i think it is a batch of bad batteries with a damaged chip regulating voltage in the lipo cell

3VO Random Reboots, return?

So I got my Evo 3d and I'm very happy with the phone overall. The camera could be a bit better and the screen could have some better viewing angles, but other than that it's spectacular. However, I've been getting plenty of random reboots. It rebooted the first day I got it 4 times, then didn't reboot for a day and then it got into some weird reboot loop (5 random reboots right after each other). I did a full factory reset, no problems for a day, and then I turned on wimax and its back to rebooting.
Is this a software issue or should I just exchange it? My phone has a perfect screen with no dead pixels and am worried about losing that.
It seems a lot of evo 3d users are having some problems, how many of you suffer from random rebooting or freezing? I can tolerate minor bugs like the green camera thing, because I know HTC will fix those, but this rebooting is a bit much.

I would absolutely exchange that thing. The amount of rebooting you're experiencing is definitely not normal at all. Especially if it continued to do it after a factory reset. I had one random reboot when I first got the phone, and have not had one since. It was actually the first time I turned it on, and the phone was like 125 degrees, because the UPS guy left it on my doorstep in the hot Las Vegas sun!! I attributed it to the phone being overheated, because it happened within 2 minutes after I booted the first time. I would say your situation warrants a trip to the Sprint store..
Yeah, I will take it back. I'm just a bit concerned with how many of these phones seem to do this though. Who here has had a Evo 3d that hasn't crashed and restarted? Surely so many people can't have faulty hardware. I hope it's only a software problem. All I want is a phone that will be stable. It's something I haven't had for sometime since my old phone loved to randomly reboot too.
This is exactly how my old HD2 died, it would start freezing and then rebooting, the reboots would become more and more frequent until the device became unusable. Though that probably had more to do with how much flashing, overclocking and kernel tweaking I would do to it.
crashing and restarting on occasion's one thing, a lot of time that is the fault of apps
My first 3vo did this though, it crashed 4-5 times a day and would even worse just lock up and require a battery pull
returned it and the new one hasn't rebooted once in 2 weeks
definitely return it though
Yeah, I'll get a new unit but does anyone feel that the random rebooting is unusually frequent on this phone? I seem to have heard a lot about it, but I'm not sure if that's just the frequent complaining on this forum or real.

I feel it's unusually frequent. After you did the factory reset, did you refrain from re-installing your apps for a day or two? If not, try that. Do a factory reset, and try to not install any apps. Just leave it bone stock for a few days. If you don't get any reboots during that time, then re-install your apps one or two at a time, and monitor your phone's performance. If you start getting reboots again after installing a certain app, then there is a good chance that it's an app causing your problems.
However, there certainly does seem to be a common problem of rebooting, based upon the number of threads I've seen, and the number of people which have posted within those threads. The Evo4G was also plagued with a random rebooting problem, which affected a number of users, but also the majority of people did not experience that problem. There was just a batch of faulty phones that rebooted, for no apparent reason. Perhaps there is a similar issue with the 3d (unfortunately). You could also try running the RUU for the 3d, and see if that clears it up. (that will reinstall all the software). If all that fails, then exchange it. (this assuming that you're up for trying a few things to correct it, if not then I'd just exchange it)
But again, to answer your question...I feel the amount of rebooting your having is indeed abnormal. If that was happening to me, I would certainly exchange it. This is a brand new phone you purchased, and it shouldn't be doing that.
Definitely exchange it. I've had one random reboot in the weeks that I've had it so far. If it was happening every day, I'd get a new one quick.
Not sure if anyone has tried this but it worked for me so far. I travel alot for work and I cant deal with my phone rebooting all the time. I noticed more times that I was doing something that would access the sd card then it would reboot. So I changed the card out and have had 0 reboots since. Might be worth trying.
The random reboots is an issue that htc is aware of and is actively working on a software fix. Mine will randomly reboot a few times in a row then be fine for a few days.....
The first major update will come in august

Really? Do you mind posting where you learned of this? I really hope HTC is working on this. It's a shame that this otherwise awesome phone is being crippled by a few pesky bugs.

Random Rebooting

I know this is a common problem as I've seen it in other threads on other sites, but I haven't been able to find a cause/solution. My Evo 3D randomly reboots, frequently. It has happened with every firmware version since I got the phone, and with every rom/kernel I have installed. It doesn't seem to be an overheating issue. I've tried uninstalling a few apps to see if they might be the cause. Basically I'm ready to call it a hardware defect. Does anyone have any idea what causes this or how to fix it? I bought my phone unsubsidized online so it isn't easy to return, but I may have to try anyways. My 3D is useless as it is right now.
Return it.....
Sent from my EVO3D
I bought it from eBay so that's not an easy return. HTC wants me to pay to ship it to them and they want my credit card number, then if they decide it's not an issue covered by warranty then they will charge me both for looking at it and also to send it back. Basically they will hold my phone hostage if they decide they want money from me. I have filed a complaint against HTC with the Better Business Bureau over their warranty policy.
If on stock ROM, return it. Sometimes on custom roms it reboots like crazy for me when using browser.
It reboots on stock and custom roms.
Return it...
I've talked to three people at Sprint and they won't accept it as a return. They say I have to take it back to the store it was purchased at, and though I've talked to the person I bought it from, he's in another state, so Sprint says I'm SOL.

Try different Roms. My buddies had the same problem. Flashed supra and flashed silver needle kernel. Flashing a custom kernel can easily fix it. The stock kernel argues with the stock OS and the phone is tricked into thinking there is harm. Therefore reboots to try and save your phone from any damage. For sure switch the rom and kernel.

Most reboots are due to using unstable software or user error, if these aren't in question then your phone is a bad apple
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
Have a look at the battery contacts. I have read of some people solving reboots by wedging in a piece of thin cardboard on the opposite end of the battery to give it more solid contact.

replace your sd card.
*EDIT.... just for the sake of being a little more informational and contributing.... a bad sd card will cause this. your phone, like a computer, can detect a bad disk and will reboot itself to check it.
i had the same problem when i first got my phone... i had my old sd card in there... random reboots. replaced the sd card, problem went away immediately.
i KNEW it was the sd card, though, as soon as i powered up the phone with the new sd card installed because on my old phone whenever i would transfer apps to sd i would get this error pretty often "failed to move application" and i would do it again and it would work.
so after i put the old one in my new 3d i would get that same error... along with the reboots, and thats how i figured it was the card.
so when i powered the phone up with the new card, i went to move my apps from the internal disk to the card and EVERY single one of them moved over the first try. and the phone has not rebooted itself once since then.
also, i heard somewhere that HTC sent some phones out with bad sd cards.... so if you are using the one that came with the phone, that could still be your issue. replace the card.
I had a horrible time with my 3vo rebooting, then got a replacement through Sprint TEP (a new one, thank goodness; ##786# tells you refurbished status) but I had the new one do the same.
Once either of mine had a single reboot, it would then continue to a complete load (booting properly) but would then reboot again after 1-5 minutes. After pulling/reconnecting the battery, it is fine for a day.
The old one had the initial reboot WAY more often than the replacement (the old one had several in a day, this one has had only one per day for the past 2 days).
How to fix: You cannot fix it. You can, however, get a good day before it begins its rebooting sequence. To so this, you have to pull the battery. I have waited until it has rebooted, then I hit shutdown and disconnect-reconnect the battery before restarting.
I hope the issue is taken care of and the initial reboot is gotten rid of.
This has happened on bare stock unrooted and rooted cleanrom 2.1 and 2.2. Also, with 2 different SD cards and 2 different batteries and 2 different 3vos. I have HTC's fastboot off.
Cause: My best guess is that HTC fastboot is not completely off even when unchecked--something differentiates what is loaded during a random reboot from what is loaded after a battery pull, but I don't know what. That, or something differentiates a shutdown and the reboot that the phone does when it reboots randomly. I could be wrong. My sample size is only 2 corrections, but it literally rebooted 12 times then stopped completely after the battery pull and the same thing happened one additional time.
I appreciate the insights you guys have given. I have pulled the battery several times and I don't believe it has done any good, though I will test that further. I am using a 32gb sd card that I purchased when I had my evo 4g and it always worked before, but I will try using the 8gb that came with the phone. The battery is snug and I even 2 two spare battery that also don't fix the problem when being used. I had a lucky 2 days without any reboots, then back to about a dozen reboots a day. So far it's happened with every rom I've tried.
I have noticed that the problem seems to get worse in areas where there is no reception. I took it into the hoover dam and it rebooted like 20 times. Also at Disneyland in different ride buildings where there's no reception it would often reboot.
Yes, marginal reception areas are usually, but not exclusively, where mine starts its reboot routine. The other is during the airvana handoff.
Neither the battery or SD card made any difference. It seems to be getting worse now. All I have to do is run an application and half the time it will reboot. I've tried wiping the system and cache and reinstalling roms. Nothing works.
I was wrong before. It is the shutdown that makes the difference. Difference got home and it began to reset itself every 5 minutes or so. I pulled tjw battery during startup and it did not break the rebooting.
After it finished reboting, I selected shutdown then poweres it back on. After it came back up, it stayed up and has been stable since.
It looks like this might be something I have to get used to. If it begins to reboot, I have to give it a clean shutdown to relieve the issue (well, for 20 hours or so, at least). Again, HTC fastboot is always off.

[Q] phone keeps turning off, sprint acknowledgement of problem

sooo im on my 2nd evo3d due to what i thought was just a bad phone.... my phone keeps rebooting or just shuts off and the only way i can turn it back on is to pull the battery... its all completely random.
I called sprint today and complained and they knew about the problem and it is , in the techs words " a wide spread problem and we are waiting for a fix from HTC" tech also told me she had to give back her 3d back and go back to a 4g because hers was so bad with this exact issue... hers was obviously stock unrooted
so i got to thinking. thinking about the 4g battery issues and the use of an SBC kernal. hear me out ... i swear i have seen this problem before, in RC cars using LiPo batteries when the battery drops to low and the BEC shuts down or limits the ESC. now if these evo3d batteries are like the 4g batteries and have a chip in them to keep proper voltage and that chip is bad or has bad connections i think it could cause these kinds of reboots and even shut offs requiring battery pulls. Is there a Dev out there or a program that can log battery outputs so we can track to see if this is all indeed a battery issue.... i like the evo 3d but these restarts are driving me nuts , and with all the treads ive read about the shut offs, no charging, hot phones and reboots. im on my second 3d , both have been roots , eng , hboot 1.04, and new radio and wimax............
Anyone ........................
...........
I think we have the EXACT same problem.... it's starting to piss me off. This is a flagship phone and HTC released this phone with a LOT of bugs.
Have you noticed this problem more after using the GPS navigation?
One of the members here suggested an incomplete battery terminal connection, but my battery fits pretty snug. Plus, I've witnessed random reboot cycles when the phone is laying still on my desk.
If Sprint knows about this and HTC hasn't done anything, then we should be eligible to exhange our phone for the SG2 or Photon, even if we're beyond the 30-day policy.
My phone just started rebooting. Its pretty annoying. I personally think on my device its a dirty Rom flash. I am going to do a full wipe,RUU, re-apply S=OFF and really root. And see hoe it goes from there.
But yeah, it just randomly reboots. The other night it did it every 20mins it seemed. I reflashed the current rom I'm on (Synergy 435 I think) and it stopped doing it... Until probably 1hr ago when it just did it again.
*sigh*

Hopefully that one will work and be flawless man. My original one was like gold, no dead pixels, perfect screen, no overheating and most importantly, no rebooting.
Then I dropped it like an idiot. Got a replacement and I had the SAME isse you're having. So the insurance company sent me another one and its all fixed now =) (well except for ONE stuck pixel, but I'll live).
I've got this problem too and I think you're right. It has to do with the battery. I have a spare and I think it only randomly shuts off when it's on that particular battery. Will mark the battery so I know for sure which one I'm using. Anyone else have any updates?
I haven't had any reboots like that and I have flashed the living snot outta mine
It could be the battery tho... I have used the stock ones and seidio 1900mha one.... Never had any reboots software 2.17
Same issues here I have been saying its the batt for weeks now to my friends ... One thing is it does not do it as much if its charging.. mine resets so much at times I have to just turn it off for a bit, which is not cool lol.

Also is your phone new? Did you over clock it? I know some folks over clock the phones a bit and sometimes spank the cpu which would cause all sorts of things to resets and so on...
Rooted mine even before it was active on Sprint. It was brand new from the sprint store. Zero problems with it resting or reboot. I love my epic touch 4G

[Q] have you gotten random restarts?

I've had the phone for 5 days, and I've gotten about 5 restarts.
It happens when I'm doing something. Playing with ring tones, playing a poker game app...
Just wondering if it's happened to anyone else, and if it's hardware or software related.
EDIT: 9/29/2011
I've had the phone for about 2 weeks now. The past week, I've not had any restarts. Don't know what's changed. I think there was an OTA update about last week. I"ve been using it as much as I had been - web browser, angry birds, email, etc...
Oh, about last week I also re-seated the battery. Don't know if that does anything, since the battery seem like it was seated fine. But someone recommended it. Could just be a fluke.
So, one way or another, the random restarts seem to have solved itself.
Me also
Had mine for about a week and has rebooted at least 5 times. Phone seems to hang and then rebooted.
I am coming from an EVO which never had these problems. Thought about trying a Samsung or another Photon
Yea, just yesterday when I was using my flashlight app for a few minutes. It has mostly happened when I used the led flash as a flashlight. It doesn't matter which app I use, it just restarts sometimes.
And also when I was playing a game today.

My EVO 3D used to do it once in a while when it would lose a signal.
Those who don't have random restarts hardly at all...are you installing apps and using the phone fairly heavily?
I'm wondering if this is a hardware of software issue.
Try re-seating your battery and make sure the back is on good.I was having the restart issue and it ended up being that the rep that initially started the phone up didn't put the battery door on correctly.

Exactly. I've only had one random restart, after the OTA, but I chalk it up to the heat wave where I was working. Poor Mo-Pho got up to 119 degrees.
I would also suggest a factory reset and wipe of the internal SD, a lot of times the testing of each phone before they're put in the box can cause issues.

Ive had my phone for about a month, probably had 7 or 8 restarts total since I got it, two in one day during the first week but it seems better after the second OTA update. For the past two weeks I've only had two restarts. Each time it restarted I was playing angry birds and had let the phone got to sleep while in the middle of playing. When I woke it up it restarted. Sounds software related to me. Im rooted but not unlocked. I love this phone!

I get atleast one a day. I don't notice because at home I set my phone down a lot. It gets worse when im on the phone surfing the web. Then it seems to do it more often. Yesterday it rebooted three times in one hour. It gets annoying but im past my 30 days to return plus Sprint doesn't have any other phone that interests me.
Sent from my Photon.
I have the reboot issue, but I have narrowed it down. DEVS TAKE A LOOK!!
So far I can get a 100% repro of this issue if
1. I am on WIFI for DATA and make or receive a call.
2. then leave WIFI area and attempt to call out, TXT or use 3G data.
3. phone will reboot every time when that occurs.
60% repro of reboot issue with the fallowing.
1. make or receive call with WIFI on but not attached to network.
2. go into WIFI range of a known(not new!) WIFI hotspot and phone attaches to WIFI on it's own.(this will sometimes cause the WIFI, 3G, and phone signal to all appear in the task bar at the same time)
3. make a phone call, txt or turn off WIFI then attempt to use 3G data and phone will reboot.
Also this is VERY IMPORTANT!! The conditions above will not cause the reboot on it's own. If you have data updates off or leave WIFI off all day then you might never see this. Also VERY important if you receive a call when attached to WIFI and then use your phone for data only you will not get the reboot right away it may take upto 30-40 min. Also important, if you attempt to do either repro above via making a phone call you will see the dialer get stuck at "connecting" in the upper left hand side, but it will never go to "connected" and hitting anything on the dialer or the back button will not help only home, but you will notice nothing on the phone will work anymore. This will ultimately lead to a reboot!
Here is the problem as I have trouble shot the living crap out of this and it seem that either the voice/3G radio is locking up or the dialer is crapping out.
Also on a side note that when the dialer is stuck on "connecting" if you force stop the dialer it does nothing, but if you force stop the "dialer storage" it will kill the dialer, but you will still get a reboot at some point after that.
So now we know where to look at for this issue. Can any of the devs look into this as I am not sure where to go from here, but this IS the problem everyone is seeing and can be hardware or software.

Need Help...Note 2 Keeps Freezing

I'm hoping you guys can help. Been a long time lurker here and am going to be buying my Note 2 at the end of the month. But my wife purchased one the day after Christmas, and since the new ota update in January, her N2 has been freezing a lot. Sometimes you can get it to turn back on, but than it freezes and reboots on its own. Most of the time she has to do a battery pull to get it to come back on. It happens about 5 times a day.
Verizon had her factory reset it, but it still has the persistent problem. Best Buy took a look at it and they couldn't figure it out. She is hoping we can figure it out before we have to send it back in, which would suck because she would be without a phone that she needs for work for a week. Not to mention Best Buy and Verizon stated that if it does need to be replaced, that it would be with a refurbished one. Which I am not at all too happy about that. Hoping you guys can help me out.

I tried to get her to root, but this is her first android device, she's had nothing but the Iphones prior and is nervous about doing stuff like that. It started after the last ota update, and the only recent app she downloaded was Unblock Me. Since then all this has been happening, and we already uninstalled Unblock Me suspecting that was the culprit. I have it on my phone with no problems.

turn it off and see if it helps. that strange behavior is most likely caused by an app. Can you screen shot or list what apps she has on her phone?
Yeah I'm thinking it's power saving mode turn it off see if she can make it through a day without it freezing. You don't need power saving on a note 2 battery life is great without it unless your wife is like most females and always forgets to charge her phones
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
Here's the list of apps she has downloaded. She hasn't downloaded anything recently except for that Unblock Me and the ota update. She said since yesterday Verizon had her factory reset the phone. She reinstalled all her apps, and it still kept freezing. When in froze this afternoon and it shut down(didn't reboot), she took it strait to Best Buy to have them look at it.
The guy fiddled with it, and it was freezing and rebooting on him as he was messing with settings. He told her it probably needed to be sent in. She doesn't want a refurbished phone if they replace this one, so we are trying to figure it out. But since that visit, the phone has not froze on her. Weird.
Should we uninstall all the apps and install one by one each day to see which may be causing it?
Did you turn power saving off and it still freezing?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
when I checked it, it was already off. I know she had it on, but don't know if the BB guy turned it off or if it was turned off by the factory reset.
If it's still freezing with power save off then I would factory reset it then install the apps that she must have for day to day use. Then give it a day and install the other apps she wants.

This. Factory reset is your last option other than rooting (and flashing a custom OS) or sending it in.

I totally agree. :good:
Phones normally only freeze when the ram runs out. Is there any app misbehaving and sucking up all the ram?
I had some what i thought were random reboots the first few months with my N2. These I discovered were caused by carry the N2 in my back pocket of my jeans! Every time I bent down to pick something up or to tie my laces it would reboot!! I would just hear the start up noise comming from my pocket. Make sure she doesn't put it in her skinny-jeans back pocket.
Thanks for the suggestions guys! It froze again this morning, so we are going to factory reset and install apps one by one each day to see who the culprit is. Hopefully its an app doing this.
I have been experiencing EXACTLY that and hqve tried most of the remedies. However this only seems to happen at work which makes it somewhat difficult to actuwlly sot down and diagnose the problem.

I have been reading about this issue from a lot of people with the s3 & note 2 on forums. I honestly think Samsung/Verizon sent out a bad OTA due to rushing to close the security loopholes. I refused the ota and found a way to permanently defer the update and have not experienced any reboots or freezing.
From my previous/recent experience Verizon will absolutely not help you at all, they are worthless 99% of the time. All they are able to do is tell you to factory reset it(if they know how) and have no actual clue how to fix the devices. They will even 'call' the software support for you but will still tell you to either factory reset or do a return. I am disgruntled after they destroyed 3 phones (Droid Incredible) in my family after pushing out horribly bugged OTAs that left the devices useless. I confronted them and they flat out refused to take ownership of their own software that they pushed out. I still feel like they should be sued over what happened.
Good Luck!

Yeah leave it to VZW to fix one thing and introduce a worst bug. I had a Motorola bionic that kept losing signal every 20 minutes or so then version sent out an update damn phone would drop signal every 30 seconds or not even connect to data. Basically rendering the phone useless. Worst part was Motorola had the bootloader locked down so tight there was no good development. At least we have good development for our note 2

Users should legitimately have a lawsuit case against Verizon. They are essentially forcing you to purchase a new device because of something they did. When I confronted them they straight up told me to buy a new device. Devices should work indefinitely theoretically and they are causing irreparable damage.
My note 2 was having major battery drain issues so I got my self back to pure stock like day 1 and I went ahead and updated with the ota so I will see if the random freezing / reboots pick up or not. I already noticed a keyboard bug where it pulls up a numerical only keyboard and wont allow me to type letters unless I reboot.
Did anyone solve this? I'm in the UK and very recently got my ota update. Since then I've been getting multiple daily resets and freezes. Can't say whether it's due to the ota update or some software I've been using, but the crashes are certainly pretty new and very annoying.
