Does anyone get fuzzy or low res contact pics? I use hi-res pics for my contacts and they look like crap when someone calls me. I am on alien rom but if I remember correctly it did this on my factory rom before I even rooted or unlocked my phone. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
I've got the same issue with the stock ROM. They look good in the contact book, but once you call they look like crap. Interestingly, some of low quality photos look better.

I guess you and I are the only two people that own Photons and have this problem. Oh wait maybe everyone is on that stupid Photon vs SGSII thread. This forum really sucks. I might just get the SGS II simply because you get ten times the activity on the forums than you will here!
I think it's an Android problem and not a Photon problem. I had the same issue with my Evo 4G.

I just sold my Evo and I have never ever had this problem. I honestly can't remember if the Evo did this when I got it with the factory setup but every single ROM I flashed after I rooted and unlocked the phone the contact pictures looked fine.

I have not noticed this issue on my photon. I do have a screen saver on my phone that is ant-glare and anti-finger print, so it is not clear.

Was it running gingerbread 2.3.3? Maybe it is a gingerbread 2.3.4 problem? Only speculation on my part.

It is a little bit of both. IIRC, it has something to do with the contacts app and/or google reducing the size of the image when it saves it as your contact's image. When it uses the image for a phone call it tries to enlarge the image which results in its poor quality.
The Photon does have a limitation that doesn't let you follow a work around that the EVO has. With the Evo you could choose the contact type as 'phone' or 'gmail'. The contacts that were saved as gmail were blurry but the ones saved locally on the phone looked normal. It was a slight pain, but you could create a contact with the same name and save it locally on the phone and link back to the original. From then on, it would pull the pic from the version saved on the phone and not gmail.
I have not been able to find a way to make the Photon do this or something similar.

This makes sense but then I can go into my contact and edit it and change the contact picture. Pick a picture from my gallery which would bypass any google saved contact pic. But then even the saved local picture is still blurry?
Contact pics do look horrible in the dialer. I recall EVO 4G looking just as bad.

I got 2 different pics from 2 different people sent to my phone & both of them were Blurry. At first I thought my friend phone sucked but i got sent another picture by someone else and its Blurry too. I never had this problem before. I'm not sure if it's a 2.1 thing or a bug with the newest firmware, because I usually don't get pics sent to my phone & before those 2 I haven't had one sent since 1.6 and it worked fine since. I'm running the newest pre-rooted firmware by the way. I'll have more pics sent to my phone to see what happens.

I think it's a 2.1 problem with MMS, both my friend's and my own X10 has the same problem. The picture looks seriously compressed and blurry. Didn't have this problem on 1.6.
You're on T-mobile-USA, right?
It's T-mobile's fault. I saw this all the time when I used unbranded Nokias. If T-mobile doesn't recognize the phone, it sends the photos at a max default of 160x120... it's so that any phone can display it.
It probably used to work on T-mobile because they probably added the info for the X10 1.6 when they were testing it (since it was rumored that it was going to arrive for tmo-usa).
I know cyanogenmod has an option to set the phone to identify as a default android to the network - it receives full size pics then. I'm not sure if there's a program that can do this for the X10. Other option is to get Tmobile to add the phone's info to the network. I think someone did it with the e71 and they were receiving full sized pics. If enough people contact tmo (I doubt their entry level customer service can do anything, will probably need to be escalated), they will do it.
not sure if it's their fault, I notice this with one pic a friend sent me from his K800 or smth like that
when seeing it with mediascape it looks blurry
Yeah I do have t-mobile USA. Sigh well it's not a big deal I guess, just sucks. I'm hoping its a problem with 2.1 tho.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
It's not a behavior exclusive to TMO-US. Here's an interesting forum post. Hopefully it can answer any questions I can't.
Interesting quote from it:
"If your carrier does not recognize the User-Agent as one it has seen before, and they are using a well behaved MMSC, the MMSC will go fetch the UaProf xml file. More often than not however you'll encounter an MMSC that simply degrades to the lowest quality when a phone it doesn't know is encountered, or worse, it will simply drop the connection."
The picture looks blurry/compressed because it's a 160x120 images blown up to an 854x480 screen
and now i'm off to see if there's an apk or something as easy so that we can modify this ourselves for our X10s... lol
edit: we may be able to hex edit a file to do it... if nothing comes up by wednesday (work is a little too much right now), i'll give it a shot.
Thanks, it would be really great & helpful if you can do that
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I had a little time today but had a problem. I used root explorer to browse the system/apps folder and I couldn't find mms.apk. Maybe because the only other time i looked for mms.apk was on a phone with cyanogenmod, but is there a setting I need to enable to see it? Or do I need to adb into the phone?
I'll see if I get farther than step 1, haha. If it does work I'll start a thread in the Android Development forum.
Very nice improvement over my EVO 4G.
The only negative is the fact I have to deal with the forced password from my IT policy again since I don't see any work arounds yet.
There is a reason for the forced password from your IT department if you want their exchange network to be open on your phone. Getting around it is just undermining the security your IT guys are trying to provide for their network.

So far I really like it. Coming from the EVO 4G it isn't a 'huge' change so a lot of things are normal. It isn't like coming from a Blackberry. Love the sense 3.0.
Screen is really nice. Side by side with the EVO 4G you can really see the improvement. I'm not a big fan of the 3D because it messes with my eyes. It is cool...but not worth the headache for me.
Because of the higher resolution screen, the keyboard I normaly use (SmartKeyboard Pro) is stretched a little in landscaping and seems a little too small in portrait. I'll have to try a bunch of other ones. I wasn't too thrilled with the stock keyboard at first but I'll give it a few days.

There is nothing that is harmful to the company in my email or on my phone. Plus I run Lookout on my phone. If it goes missing, I log on and lock the phone. If I can't find it I do a remote wipe. My phone is by my side 24/7 so I know when it is missing within minutes.
The password just ruins the Sense experience. No point of having shortcuts on the lock screen when you have to type in a password.

I've been running a Sense 3.0 ROM on my EVO for weeks, and I have a passcode -- I would even if my employer didn't require it. The lockscreen is still extremely useful with a passcode. Sure, it's not immediate access, but it still decreases the amount of navigation to get to common tasks.

Call quality was good enough for me. I have never expected crystal clear calling from a cell phone. I think that expectation was set back in the days of older networks and crap phones. I can hear who I was talking to, there was no distortion, and nobody was complaining about how I sounded.
I will set it up on my Ford Sync system in my car today and test it then too.
Loving mine so far. 3D pics are uber cool, the 3D Video equally cool, can't wait to hook it up to the TV.
Only complaint - No flashlight app. Haven't tried any market ones yet though.

Idiots at Sprint told me I might have to take my phone to the store to be looked at lol.
I am looking to be able to access the cameras on my phones from another android phone or computer. Lets say one gets stolen (I have 3, an evo 4g, an evo 3d, and and epic 4g) I want to be able not to only track them but also access them from another device or computer and see what the people are doing on it or at least be able to access the front and rear cameras with out their knowledge and be able to snap pics from the camera. Not sure if that makes much sense it does in my head and I would really like to know how. I am sure it can be done over wifi or tethered but I won't be either of those. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Look up app called "android lost". It once u activate it from web site it will ask user of stolen phone to enter a passcode. Every time they do it takes a picture of them. I believe it also takes pictures every few minutes and gives u GPS, address location, and let u turn on microphone and view outgoing and incoming calls and texts. Bad ass program. And the best part of it all its free
Use the app "webkey" you can do everything you want to your phone from a computer

I think the app "gotcha" has similar features... you can also use it for surveillance if you suspect that someone is using your phone when you are not looking.
Androidlost is pretty awesome. You access its functions from a web browser, and you can have it use both the front facing and back cameras to take pictures. That being said, it would be nice if there was a dedicated app that did this. Real-time video would be an awesome addition too. It'll be like your lil'personal security camera.

Could u imagine putting this on ur kids phones or ur spouses phone. I'm sure people take advantage of it that way
As mentioned previously there are already several apps that do this. Obviously it isn't always going to be tractable, because the phone has to be on, have GPS signal (or at very least a connection to three towers) to get a small enough radius of its position. It would need either wifi or a 3G connection. Realistically for live video it will need a good, stable 4g connection (unless you are satisfied with a low resolution, low frame rate video feed). It needs to also use as little resources as possible, and be somewhat hidden so it doesn't make someone suspicious or find it to turn it off, or kill the task or service.
It is a great tool to have if your phone is stolen for sure. I'm not sure that it would be really useful though in the event that your phone is stolen, not lost. I don't know about other people but I am thinking if my phone was stolen the first thing I would do is have my account suspended. I would be worried because people can use your phone bill to buy things, and call some phone whores at 800 an hour.
I am pretty sure I read one of those apps have the ability to format your data so it isn't stolen too. The other function I might want to count on, is the ability for the app to lock the phone down. Make it impossible to unlock the device, at all, or maybe with a password. Of course the last important feature would be to have all this start even after reboot and battery pull.
I can imagine this being used maliciously by some people. Anyway, that is my two cents on the matter.
I remember seeing something with somewhat the same function. When lost, you go to the website, lock it, it shows gps location, and takes a pic using front camera if possible. Don't remember the app right now...

Bought an HTC One today. The camera appears to be defective. It has trouble focusing and is always blurry on the top right-hand side quadrant of the photo.
Since I'm pre-paid and bought from an individual, should I go to T-Mobile for a warranty replacement or direct to HTC? Obviously it's under warranty since it hasn't been out for over a year.
I know AT&T were jerks about warranty claims if you didn't purchase direct from them but don't know about T-Mobile.
Thanks.

as long as there is no damage you should have 14 days for an exchange
I believe you will have to go to HTC. T-Mobile will only honor it within the 14 day window for the original owner

The phone is definitely outside the 14 day window and I'm not the original owner. Guess I'll go to HTC and play that game.
The physical hardware is clearly under warranty, so hopefully they don't give me the runaround.
Before returning try changing the video resolution from super hd to hd and see if that fixes it. Then you should be able to switch it back and it should work fine. It doesn't just fix the video camera but the still camera as well.

Now you tell me. I boxed it up and shipped back today.
Here is what the average photo looked like. Just terrible. Tried a hard reset, reset the camera settings, etc. Nothing worked. I think it's just plain defective.
Night photos are grain city too. Nothing good about it at all. FYI, I had and sold an HTC One (regretted it, bought another) and the photos were fantastic. This one is just a dud (hence why the seller only asked $450 cash - now I see why).
HTC support asked me if I wiped the lens with a lint free cloth. WTF do you think, lol?
Tap to focus just didn't work. In fact, nothing worked. Every photo is terrible. I really hope HTC support doesn't give me the run around.
(my backyard - yes we have two dogs and yes their pee kills the grass, but they are worth it)
Yeah that's about what mine looked like before. I had just written HTC to find out what I needed to do the replace it. This was literally just last night. I was up late about to flash the 1.29 Rom to see if that fixed it. I looked through the settings to see if there was a way to change the auto focus settings which there only is for video. I changed the resolution setting just to see if it might help and it completely fixed it. Not sure why but it seems like it was "stuck". It may or may not have been the same as your issue but sounds like it was. Whatever though, you get a new one so it all works out.

Anyone know how fast HTC repairs/replaces and ships back? They will receive the phone today and I'm hopeful to receive it back by this weekend. Realistic?
Well, just got the phone back. Slow ground shipping!
Aaaand HTC did absolutely nothing to the phone. The pictures are all still blurry. Infuriated right now. Two weeks and they did absolutely nothing, just shipped it right back to me with no notes, no repair, nothing.
Called up HTC. Of course they have "no notes" as to what was done to the phone. Here's a tip: nothing was done.
The "escalations team" was closed so they told me to call back tomorrow.
Just so I'm not crazy, is this considered a normal "ultrapixel" photo from this phone? I just took it. Basically, the tap to focus does absolutely nothing. I'm about to unload this junk to someone else and make it their problem. I can't go a full month without a working phone as my only option is to send it in again and have the HTC techs go "yep, looks good from here" and send it right back to me again. Just replace your defective hardware guys. Not hard.
It would'nt hurt to try
The worst they would say is no. Ive heard story's of people getting replacements from t mobile in your situation, if it was a manufacturers defect. I would just go into a store and be totally polite friendly with the rep and show that your completely bummed out about your new phone not working the way it should. From my experience, kindness can go a long ways with t mobile.

Not to press the depressing issue any more..but is that pic actually a focused zoomed in shot ..meaning your actually farther away then where the picture makes it look.
Was thinking that maybe your just to zoomed in with the shot... No photo ever looks any good fully zoomed ..I usually walk up closer less zoom =clearer picture.
But its just a idea I know your mad as hell .. And I agree the photo is horrific .

Just wondering if anyone else is having the same issues? My phone is brand new and has never been dropped. It's like the camera will NEVER focus for taking pictures. It makes the sound like it's focusing but still stays blurry no matter zoomed or not.

All I know is I'm about ready to sell/return this HTC One and go get the Galaxy S4. My S3 treated me fine and the camera was far superior.
Was told it's a software issue and the update isn't expected for at least a month. So until then I have a $600 phone with a useless camera. Returning this and going to the S4. Not sure why I doubted it when I loved my S3. Figured I would give HTC a try again from my Sensation 4G days but what a waste of time. I can say the build quality of the phone along with the screen were definitely the things that attracted me.
What about an exchange, since you just got it? Did you get it in store? If so .. you could test out the one they exchange it for while at the store. Mine works awesome, and many others are very happy with theirs. So it sounds like you got a lemon camera. And we all know there are some bad ones in all the phone models.

True. I actually returned it and went with the S4. I'll give HTC another shot once their next big phone comes out. I did find myself missing a bigger screen also. It may be lacking a few PPI compared to the One but it's just as nice. Thanks for the kind words guys.

I see that you already returned the One. But I do not see how it could have been a software issue. If you were stock, you should have had build 1.27.531!8. I have that build and my focus works fine. Sounds like you should have exchanged it because it was clearly defective. Too late now, though.

Just wondering if anyone else is having the same issues? My phone is brand new and has never been dropped. It's like the camera will NEVER focus for taking pictures. It makes the sound like it's focusing but still stays blurry no matter zoomed or not.
Any ideas or suggestions?

In my phone this strongly correlates with heat. Once the phone gets hot from being at high brightness or doing something graphically intensive it will not focus. Sometimes you can get it to work by giving it a sharp slap or pressing gently on the glass in front of the camera. If you let it cool down for a few minutes then it works. But it is definitely a physical problem.
I'm having the same issues. My first HTC One was fine but had a power issue so it was replaced with this one that will now not focus. I contacted HTC and T-Mobile and was told that there would be a software update in the future to fix the issue but there are no specified dates. I asked T-Mobile if they could exchange it since it's only 2 months old and was told I would have to wait on an upgrade or purchase at full price. I'm really not pleased about any of this.
