Running Farmville @ Decent Speed - HTC EVO 3D

I am currently using the Evo 3D. I am curious why the default Android browser has so much trouble running Farmville at a decent speed and what the problem is related to. I was thinking that it might have something to do with a lack of hardware acceleration, but I was certain that it is now enabled on this device. Could someone help me?

I think the problem is..... you play Farmville
have you tried other browsers?

Try opera browser maybe. I think it has hardware acceleration

Farmville has horrible coding and barely runs on some computers. Expecting it to run perfect on a cell phone is asking a bit much.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk

Yeah, but if you want to look at it from a Android VS Apple equation, consider that iPhones run it through a buggy app, where we are closer to the original experience from our flash enabled browsers alone. Understanding this is a good first step to making optimization for Android from the developers irrelevant.
I have tried the default browser, which is the one that I have found comes closest, but is seconds slow behind user input. The Opera browser has problems related to its use of flash, and the game window will not even appear. I mainly use the Dolphin HD browser. Even when trying to force a desktop view, the screen says that the page is unable to be formatted for my device.

I have considered that is is a poorly coded game, and if so, there is indeed very little we can do about it. Thanks for the tip.

I thought I saw an app for Farmville once? Perhaps it was pulled or just a "clone" - I don't play Farmville, so I didn't pay attention...but have you looked for an actual app that ties into your account?

No. There is a similar game released in the Android market, but Zynga themselves have said for over a year that they were working on an app for us.

Androids open platform apps crash less than iOS apps

Haha funny stuff. We just got iPod touches fitted with scanners and credit card machines at my work and they get super slow if the program is left open and sometimes they crash. Could be on our end though since my it team build the apps from scratch. Either way its nice to know that the ios ecosystem has its own problems lol.

And they chose ipod's to develop on ?? i take it their jailbroken ?
Apple devices don't need to be jailbroken for official developers to make apps for it. You just have to go thru a certain protocol and guidelines..then it has to be approved by apple.
As for the crashing IOS apps I've know this for the longest. Apple people didn't think so because there is no notification that comes up to tell you app crashed. When IOS app crashes it either just freezes up or kicks you back to the homescreen. Plus things crash all the time in IOS but just happens in the background. That's how apple fools you into thinkn it runs so well when it really doesn't all the time. I have an Ipad so i know. It does run well but has its own flaws n set of limitations also. I had to jailbreak my Ipad only to be able to do half the things Android does right out the box. My Ipad or even an ipad2 can't hold a candle to the Prime or Android. IOS does have some really great apps though. Can't lie on that. Their tablet only apps section is HUGE! Once android catches up to tablet only apps is when it'll start to get neck n neck with IOS.
Plus I just saw an article debunking another myth. That IOS games are better than Android ones. ANDROID WON Some award for having more than have the games in the top ten mobile games of all time coming from TegraZone. TegraZone has pumped out some big hits for Android. Aside from Gameloft, Tegrazone makes the best games with best graphics n such.

Android has this great feature for developers - crash reports. If some app crashes - please send them, they are really helpful! I even built in automatic crash reporting in some apps to help find issues from other markets than Android Market. Really, really helpful although it's sometimes hard to believe what people use Android on (Chinese device names are sometimes really strange and have bugs, for example report having OpenGL 2.0 while they don't have it).

Yeah, crash reports are great ... if system information is added which most users don't unfortunately. So I never knew which device crashed my app nor the system status by that time.

also there are many websites which requires flash for online games. i wonder what is going to happen?

Apple cares more about 'user experience' than legacy support.
Additionally HTML5 sucks big time at a lot of things because there is no real standard (only lots and lots of contradicting drafts and implementations) so it's the IE-nightmare all over for web designers.
I'm sure someone will figure how to port ICS-version to Jellybean, or at least to the AOSP/CM9 ROM's since it would be possible to implement compatibility to legacy versions.
Flash-support is one of the main selling points for Android tablets over iPads with normal users so I don't see the manufacturers dropping it lightly. They might adopt Chrome's approach of maintaining Flash support themselves.

yea thats the main point. flash should not be removed at any cost. and i think google wants to improve speed and performance in its upcoming versions just to run butterly smooth its buggy android !! so he is trying to remove flash. in this way he will also be independent from adobe.
Why wouldn't flash work? Is there a reason why it'll be incompatible with 4.1. Adobe just said it'll stop bringing new releases to mobile. The current one should work fine.
They said they were going to provide ONE update for ICS, but I have seen multiple updates since ICS was released... I think they will continue through the whole 4.X.X versions
Project Butter is making enough changes to my knowledge, that it could very truly break Flash quite easily. In such ways that we may actually have to choose: better surfing experience or flash experience.
Look for Flash in Play Store... You will see Adobe saying that "Flash Player will not be supported on any Android version above 4.0.X" So there goes 4.1....
Sent from my Sensation using xda app-developers app
Why blame Google? Last I checked it wasn't Google that owned flash and last I read (just Google it) Adobe said THEY (not google) were moving away from the mobile market because it wasn't cost effective and took to much time. So go cry to Adobe. Not here... Unless you want to try and code a flash plugin yourself. ;-)
Shifted from Outer Space
It will not come to Chrome, as Chrome will be standard browser for JB and does not support flash. Maybe Samsung will keep the Stock browser who knows.
It is a weird one. I noticed that for instance the video on the BBC websites does not work in Android Chrome. This is despite them saying it is HTML5.
I'm assuming that is a user agent thing, if it thinks you are browsing the site from an iPhone/iPad it gives you HTML5, but it if detects Android it directs you to flash.
Anyone know if this is right, and if so how you get Chrome to look at the HTML5 versions of BBC embeded video?
Er, yes they do!
I'm watching the tennis on the BBC website
if google left flash and html 5 were not up equvialent standard to flash i m gonna pee on android's green robot !!and will move to iphone 5. atleast apple has excellent hardware with stable software too. and the battrey lasts long too. flash for me is a customer retaining tool to android.
Google spent some dollars for adobe flash or u will surely be in loss!
I find it weird how Chrome is now the only browser that actively supports Flash in Linux, yet it's only popular android browser that doesn't support. I'm hoping they'll add support for it.

IOS restrictions?

Was gonna post this in another thread which I found out has closed so I'm asking here cause it seems appropriate:
I've never owned a device running iOS, so please could someone explain to me what is so restrictive about Apple's products? I know you can't have widgets or download from a third party without jailbreaking (surely you can download pdf files etc. Though, right?) but what else?
Sent from my R800i using xda app-developers app
There is no technical reason for that, Steve Jobs said once that they are putting the apps under a series of test before putting them on the market to provide an higher degree of quality, honestly i see every kind of junk in the App store, even apps that plays farts.
They are just trying to offer less and make a lot of money out of it.
Do not forget, Apple does nothing on its own, does not have even 1 single factory for their hardware, even their OS are just FreeBSD porting, it's just about fashion with their products, also they can't be open because of their business strategy, think about iTunes, iTunes is based on the fact that their OS is closed, if iOS will be opensource probably the music industry will leave iTunes and iTunes itself will die.
Being closed-source also facilitate the "dream factor" and the users can't verify how a feature work and they just use it a the brand tells them.
Apples products are restrictive because they try to lock you into Apple's ecosystem, you can't install apps from anywhere other than the iTunes store (without jailbreaking), they block apps from their store if they find a "moral objection" to them (trying to force their morality on the consumer) and finally they outright ban apps from their competitors (the iOS gmail app which has become an "applet" you can access through the browser).
There are some APIs that you don't have access to that you would have on Android.....mainly around hardware stuff. It also takes a lot longer to get an app approved in the app store. It can be up to a week or two weeks depending on you app. Compare this to Google Play where its almost instant.
Like the previous poster said, with iOS you are tied into using apple's eco system of the app store and itunes. Its not a bad thing really if you are happy with that, but some prefer the relative freedom of Android.
I've developed for both Android and iOS and personally I havent had any issue with restrictions on iOS......it hasnt dtopped me doing anything I wanted to do on that platform.
Good luck!

Take your IToy....connect and sync it with your computer...go to your friend's house. He has some music & vids on his IToy that you would also like on yours. Connect your IToy to his computer to get those music & vids...see what happens..
Or have the hard drive crash on your PC, get a new hard drive. Connect your IToy to your computer so you can copy all your music & vids back to your PC & see what happens..(this happened to somebody I know)
How are the things mentioned here anything but bad? Anytime competition is prevented is bad for the consumer since competition is the only thing that encourages innovation and without it every company would just follow planned obsolescence.
Very costly sdk which makes developing very easy...............
closed source nothing to learn nothing to gain............
very costly its just isnt worth what to pay ............
most of the apps are paid ... unlike android..........
you wont recive os updates and ports custom roms like android does..........
all things are complicated you need and should be done via ituunes unlike android plug in usb do what you want..........
no live wallpaper support out of the box(needs jail breaking)
same userinterface how dumb can it get without the desktop............
no customization...............
add to that damn costly..............
theres a bigger list but its waste of time discussing abt it.......

No. "True" multitasking requires the service to keep running in the background. What you're describing is just caching the app in the RAM.
So it depends on the apps themselves? I have 1GB RAM.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app
iOS restrictions are as follows:
-Only available on one phone/tablet
-Can't install apps outside of app store without jailbreak, so no betas, console emulators
-No widgets, custom launchers, custom keyboards (like Swype)
in true multitasking the app shouldnt be killed and should be cached with no lag......thats true multitasking.
Actually, iOS proprietary, and from there go restrictions.
But Android is open to all, anyone can bring in their code.

How smooth is it really?

Reading from various articles and comments from users it seems that
1) There seems to be a bit of dropped frames and stuttering.
2) The GPU sometimes struggle to handle the high res.
Is this the case? How smooth would you say it is really 90% of the time?
I have no issues with lag or studdering, save for the occasional hiccup when I used Chrome. I simply installed AOSP browser and all is well.

90% of the time it's literally as smooth as the definition of the word 'smooth' can be. Literally couldn't be any smoother.
The ONLY time it isn't 60 frames per second smooth are when you are either using chrome or hitting a throttling point when posting an intensive game, hopefully the lat err well be fixed.

+1, except for my purposes this is a conservative figure. I've been using this heavily for a few weeks, and it's been incredibly smooth about 98% of the time. Handles beautifully, battery life has been great, and I keep thinking of more ways to use it in place of clunkier pieces of tech. One of the best purchases I've made in a long time.
Had it about 24 hours now and it is very smooth.

It's probably the smoothest device ever when it is smooth. All of the tasks I do, it handles well. Games like NBA Jam, Anomaly Warzone, etc.. have no problems at all (I've seen more intensive games in YouTube, but those aren't particularly my type so..). I'd say about 95% of the time it is darn smooth, way smoother than when I got my GNex out of the box. The 5% isn't 'stuttery' or 'laggy' -- the device becomes crippled to the point that you sleep it and it won't come back on anymore and you'd have to force a reboot. This happens mostly with Chrome.
Its like butter the majority of the time. Do yourself a favor, dont use chrome and disable Google Currents. Then try to find a faster tablet on the market right now. You wont.
Install ktmanta kernel and its even smoother using his governor . also you can change the the thermal limits ..
No more throttling so far

I recently discovered Ocean Browser courtesy of this forum. That really made this tablet the smothest computer I've ever seen.

It's pretty smooth, but not Nexus 4 smooth. If you're just kind of using it lackadaisically then it's very smooth. However, once you start going all Bruce Lee in it, you'll notice the stuttering and dropped frames. I'm not complaining - I like multitasking, but there's certainly room for improvement.
Maybe I see it more because I have multiple accounts (which is a buggy right now) and both accounts are eating up a lot of memory?
EDIT: By the way, I use Chrome and like how it works - that may be a contributor based on what everyone is saying. Having said that, Chrome seems to work really well on my N4. It's not the fastest browser, but it's fast enough and I like how it functions.

Yes, multiple apps, multitasking. Again, don't forget that my wife has her own account so that may contribute to it.
Ironically, I just spent ~5-mins (after a fresh boot) trying to recreate the stutter without using Chrome and found it a bit harder than I thought .
Here's what I did:
- Open Dolphin -> Load The Verge
- Open BeyondPod -> Just scrolled through the updates
- Open YouTube -> Watched a review for 10 seconds
- Open JustPictures! -> Click SmugMug account -> Noticed some stuttering loading initial thumbnails (smooth after that)
- Hit Home Key -> Swipe to reveal another desktop -> Some lag getting to the other desktop, same thing going back.. .cleared up after 2-3 swipes back/forth
TBH it wasn't terrible and not worth complaining about, but this is also after a fresh boot. After hours of my wife using it in her account and me using it in mine, I notice these things a bit more often.
It's probably worth noting I may be overly critical since I'm pissed about some of the glitches which happen in the tablet (i.e. apps crashing in the main account, unknown reboots, etc). When trying to recreate the problem the tablet was actually damn smooth - I surprised myself
Cool
Alright... I've been using the n10 for at least an hour now. My wife was using it previously to play songs to our son, etc. It definitely stutters and lags somewhat often. Just strolling posts up and down in Tapatalk HD it stutters/skips frames. Could be a poorly written app? Maybe, but it's a white screen with nothing but a bit of text. So yeah, I stand by what I said originally.
Full disclosure, I did use Chrome, but I'm not evaluating smoothness in that app, nor immediately after it.

I use tapatalk on my Gnex, and the HD beta on my N10. The lag you're describing appears to me to be associated with the way the app must retrieve messages to display. Unlike a web page that is fetched completely, it appears that tapatalk is fetching a group of messages at a time...essentially on demand message retrieval. I attribute the lag to the app having to request the next group of messages before it can scroll down and display them.
Not 100% positive about this, but it seems likely to me. Aside from this and the occasional chrome seize up, I have no lagging with my N10.

Thanks for your reply... The tablet was fine since last night, but after I posted, went into Chrome and it froze causing a reboot. I'm going to live w/out Chrome for a while and see if that's more of a culprit than I give it credit for.
By the way I think you're wrong about tapatalk. Even if it does work as you describe, then after loading, I should be able to scroll up/down without the frame skips, yet that's not the case.

My experience w/nexus 10 after 3 years of ipad-ing

So I just got my nexus today and wanted to reserve judgment for a couple of days but couldn't help myself, mostly because I'm looking for answers. Out of the box I actually prefer the materials used for the nexus. The back has more grip to it but still manages to feel premium. The speaker grills are deceiving because sound only plays From the very top of them. The nexus is wider so it might just take some getting used to but for the time being it is a bit awkward to hold in landscape orientation. Watching movies that are intended to be in high def are actually sharper looking on the iPad than they are on the nexus. Both YouTube and Netflix movies. These are less complaints and more just differences I noticed
...That said my real gripe is with the chrome browser because this is what I find myself doing with the tab most frequently. Safari and even chrome on the iPad were buttery experiences. Even chrome on my note 2 is fantastic but for whatever reason chrome on the nexus 10 gives me unbearable load times, and once its loaded scrolling up and down web pages is painfully choppy and basically has a load time of its' own. I'm wondering if anyone else is in the same boat as me as far as the browser goes and what their solution was. I was going to root and flash cm10 but would like to stay in rooted so that I can use my time Warner Tv app. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate your help thanks.
Try a custom ROM / custom kernel combination. I'm currently on AOKP [PUB] / Trinity Ten and have nothing but smooth performance across all my apps, good battery life, etc. Also make sure you use a youtube app that can support HD. You might have better results with the above. YMMV

Alot of custom roms have it pre-installed. Otherwise search for a thread here that will show you how to download and install it.
Cosign on aosp browser. Best browser to date imo.

my real gripe is with the chrome browser because this is what I find myself doing with the tab most frequently. Safari and even chrome on the iPad were buttery experiences. Even chrome on my note 2 is fantastic but for whatever reason chrome on the nexus 10 gives me unbearable load times, and once its loaded scrolling up and down web pages is painfully choppy and basically has a load time of its' own

Here's the thing with iPad browser compared to Android; Apple values UX above everything else, so as soon as you touch your finger to the screen, iOS devices stop EVERYTHING and handle the scrolling process exclusively making it nice and smooth. When using Safari, for example, if the page is half-loaded and you touch the screen and start scrolling, iOS stops the page from loading and will not load anything more until you release the screen. Sure, that gives wonderfully smooth scrolling, but it means it won't finish loading the page until you stop scrolling...
On Android, however, while Project Butter does raise the priority of the surfaceflinger and HWComposer, the pages still load when scrolling. On sections of the page that have already loaded it should be just as smooth, however if you scroll to a section that needs to be loaded, Android browsers will all load this section of the page while still scrolling, resulting in a small amount of jutteriness as the scrolling, rendering and loading processes fight for CPU priority. It's getting better as the OS slowly makes better use of multiple cores, but that's the basic jist of it.
This is all paraphrased from an Android development engineer as background explanation of Project Butter and iOS vs Android scrolling experience. (sorry if this is explaining what you already know, I figure the info could be useful to other people as well)
Anyway, as for Chrome vs other browsers, I personally HATE Chrome for Android (it messes up the rendering of lots of sites, only renders at quarter native resolution and loads mobile phone versions of sites by default), and so I use Dolphin Beta instead, which is incredibly smooth and fluid for my uses!
Ok at this point I'm starting to think that the nexus 10 has an issue with wifi and connecting to some routers. After googling about wifi issues it returned way too many results to be a coincidence. My dads got an up touchpad that I put jellybean on and that thing is having absolutely no issues. This isn't an android issue this is definitely a nexus 10 issue. Every other device in the house connects flawlessly but the nexus could take a 30 seconds to google something and a minute to load theverge.com. I think I'll get it replaced. If the replacement has the same issue ill hang onto the ipad. Maybe get an up touchpad
You could try chrome beta too, its what I use and since then I haven't looked back.

Dat definitely sounds like a problem. What rom are you using? If you are using stock and having this kind of problems, maybe your N10 is a lemon :crying:
@thatg: if you keep the N10 and want to root, there is a modified version of TWC-TV that will work. I don't have a link handy, but there's a thread here where you can download it.
Later: found it:

Disable Wifi power saver. My wife has an ipad 4 and she loves my Nexus 10. Every time I turn around she is using it. Wouldn't be a problem if I enjoyed using her Ipad 4 but I don't like it. I tell her she should have got one, but she says: " I don't want to mess with it, I just want to take it out of the box and use it." Whereas I like to play with settings, tweak, and flash different ROMS. I like to customize my experience. Doesn't sound like android is for you.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet, but Firefox will solve your problems perfectly. Its bloody fast and renders just as well as chrome. No need to root or anything, just grab from the play store and you're done. This is assuming you don't have a hardware defect. FYI, Chrome was unusually slow for me as well, but I haven't bothered to try again since using Firefox.
I would also suggest using something like the speedtest app while standing next to your router and making sure all other devices/computers are turned off - if that app is being slow under these conditions it may in fact be a hardware problem.

WiFi is always a PIA but there is no issue specific to N10's, in fact I can get better throughput using it than any other I've ever owned...including my iPad 3.
Its important to note that WiFi is a protocol, not a specific product. Consequently there are many implementations, from many different parties. Not all implementations are compatable unfortunately.
Best advice I can give is to turn any 'speed boost' modes off, ditto using a wider frequency band. Turn any compatability modes available on. If all else fails, try a different router. If you're getting issues with all routers, you may have a fault with your device.

I totally agree with you. Eventhough I do not have an iPad to compare with the first surprise I had with my N10 was how much faster it was than my old Galaxy P1000, both using the same N only network/router. Web pages almost exploded onto the screen with the N10. My router is a ASUS RT-N16 using the latest Tomato-USB firmware, it is not even a dual-band router.
