Has anybody had any luck with a wired tether app? I had one on the epic and loved it better than wireless tether since it would help keep the phone charged. I had a backup of the apk that I used on the epic but it wouldn't work on the photon. I know of pdanet but would rather not use it since wired tether app worked great.

Why not? PDANet works great.
Cuz pda net does block some sites and with the wired tether app u don't have to install anything on your pc

I personally use EasyTether on my phone. And i have my parents, in-laws and various family members using it too.
I think its $4.99 on Amazon's App Store right now. Its normally $9.99. It is available on the Android Market too.
I like EasyTether because you dont need root and they have a client (computer) program for Windows, Mac, and Linux. I use linux regularly and so i needed it to work with that.

have you heard if this is allowed by sprint or if they will be throttling back data if they find out we are tethering?.just asking because sprint no longer offers tethering but instead has the 29.99 hot spot package, unless its a corporate account.i want to switch over to sprint but im worried they'll cut off my data connection if im not paying for the hot spot feature.
Ive used 10GB so far this month.. No issues.

Won't do it with Grandfathered Unlimited Data plans... anyway, by looking at data usage they can see if you are tethering or not no matter what app you use to do it. LOL.
$15 for a feature that's suppose to be free no thanks, I may work for T-Mobile but I'm not paying extra for something thats is a froyo feature by default.

Some people are getting Text Messages from T-Mobile stating that they have "some how" picked up that they are tethering via the Google Code, and the native applications and are asking for $15 fee for doing it. there is a thread floating around here somewhere on it.

even though the native Application has a WEP code input option. the Wi-FiTether.apk has a MAC address white listing option along with encryption options so it will only allow certain devices to connect to yours. which i really like. I've been driving down the highway doing 65mph and had people try to connect to my wi-fi that i am letting my wife use for her netbook.
MAC filtering will not allow them to get to the web....
thats my reason for wanting it.
I just use the one built into my phone, they don't charge me and it works great...
Does anyone have the APK of the one that came with the phone? I'm not on stock rom and would like to try the original one
Well in all regards it's a good thing I searched on this subject before I posted anything. In any case does this app let you limit your bandwidth when using it as a wi-fi hotspot? or is there any app that will let me limit my speeds when using the wi-fi?

Ive seen a few people post info about pdanet in other threads when people are talking about rooting but didnt see a thread completely dedicated to it. If there is one and i missed it sorry. Iam like many others and a littke upset bout there being no wifi tethering but just happen to run across info in another thread about pdanet. For those who dont know if you download pdanet from the market and follow the instructions you can tether through your usb cable just fine. I didnt try the bluetooth but there was an option for it......my girlfriend recovered all her mp3s off our laptop today wirelessly im guessin thats what she used

wifi tether is nice i used it all the time. But untill we have root I would just use easytether, its free and it keeps you charged up while you are using it. I never seen the other one you are talking about so I cant say if easy is better. But like I said easy is free and its been out for a long time.
Im glad you didnt pay sprint for it
bmoreboy02 - I could be mistaken but that sounds more like Bluetooth file transfer using OBEX (whatever that means) than Bluetooth tethering aka Bluetooth DUN (Dial Up Networking).
The reason for my interest in PDAnet is that it includes a Bluetooth connection. I greatly prefer wireless connections (WiFi or Bluetooth) to wired connections (USB) even if wireless is slower. With a wired connection I'm always breaking connectors or cables, or losing the cable altogether. (Although I never owned a Palm Pre, I liked the idea of wireless charging to eliminate ALL cabling and connectors.) And the cost of PDAnet is minimal, not a factor for me.
Anyway I'd be glad to hear of any successes/failures with Bluetooth tethering on the EVO 3D, that's the one thing keeping me from ordering one now. (Yeah I suppose I could just buy one, try it out and return it if I don't like its capabilities...)
Yea im not 100% sure how she did it i also noticed the evo comes preloaded with a file transfer app so she mite of used that....also if its true pdanet refuses to help the devs on here ill probally delete it and get the easy tether. Either way just glad im not payin sprint lol.

it's an employee referral plan. i'm not sure how you would go about getting it, but i used to have an employee plan working for a 3rd party dealer and after i quit they converted me over to this plan. it's $40/mo + $10 for 4g, gives you 500 min with unlim txt/data/gps/tether etc.

Unfortunately for now the only way that I have found is to pay for the Sprint Mobile Hotspot. I was Fortunate enough to have been Grand Fathered into Unlimited Mobile Hotspot Data because I have been a customer since 1997 and was not to thrilled when I was told it was going down to 5GB per month. I called Sprint, ended up speaking with a Retentions Manager (Politely) and she took care of me and kept me at Unlimited Mobile Hotspot Data. I was really upset and let it be known I would take my 3 lines to Verizon.
I had it for FREE on my OG EVO but needed Mobile Hotspot when I moved over to the Photon.
mine works through open garden tether.
Perroype3 if your phone os rooted. You can use free tether hotspot wifi from your phone to laptop. Go head search wifi tether app from market. Even with 3G or 4G

OK... After sacrificing my ability to tether by moving from CM7 xronified to ICS, I have tried all kinds of combinations to tether my Epic 4G Touch to my TP on ICS (currently running CM9 alpha 2).
I came across the app foxfi in the market and it WORKS. I am still on cloud 9 at the moment, but has anyone heard anything bad about this app? It doesn't behave like open garden or wifi tether, but its freaking working. I am posting from the tethered connection right now.

I must be missing something, how is it possible that what version of Android your TouchPad is running effects your phones ability to be a wifi hotspot?
I have never had an issue with using the built in wifi portable hotspot in Android to tether my TouchPad. If you enabled that on your phone when you were running CM7 on your TP, how would ICS affect that.

Touchpad doesn't play so nicely with all tethers. Consider yourself lucky. Alot of people dumped their TPs because they couldn't get tethering to work. It is very buggy. All 3 of my TPs don't tether at will. In the past, there have been different protocols to get each to work. My hotspot could be seen by every other device I own, but my TPs couldn't see it. There are tons of bug threads relating to wifi, but nothing really talking about tethering. I saw a few other threads in forums for phones addressing touch pad, but why not have a place in the touch pad forum to bring it all to one spot?
Now Foxfi works with all three TPs and no ceremonial switches and reboots are required to get it to go.
Mine tethers from my Atrix perfectly with the built in setting. didn't know people were dumping their tp cuz of tether.

Read what was here, but question:
Do I need to root my phone? I have the HTC Incredible 2, and am not trying to root that and just trying to connect my Touchpad (wifi-only) to my phone and be able to use internet, market, etc.
What apps and instructions would I need?
I thinking only people on Sprint (or Verizon?) have that issue....I tether my tp with my Samsung captivate on ATT all the time...so does my Sister from HTC sensation on Tmobile....

As far as I know, without rooting, you will have to pay for the hotspot service by your provider in order to tether. I would say try PDAnet, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully tethering via BT.

That could be the issue too. I will test it with some of my friends phones and report back (might be a day or two). I didn't think about a possible conflict with carrier specific phones.

I use freetether on my pre2 to tether-via-wifi with my touchpad, works great.
You're right about the bluetooth. The option is there, and I can get everything to link up, but it still doesn't seem to be actually sharing the internet connection. I thought it'd be brilliant to get bluetooth tethering going (it should use a bit less energy to tether, giving me better battery life), but it doesn't seem to work in all the testing and fiddling I've done...

My internet is down for everyone in the country, they appear to have fallen off the grid. As such, I've decided to try tethering for the first time, and it works, but I'm reading all sorts of older messages online saying that Verizon will cancel my grandfathered unlimited data and sign me up for the tethering plan. Is that still going on or will they give me some sort of warning or something? I need to have internet right now so I'm risking it.
Are u against flashing cm7? If u do u may tether all u want...
