Hey there Ace users
This thread is particularly a debate/discussion thread of:
Samsung Kies
VS
ODIN Multi Downloader
I'll start .
ODIN is more useful than Kies because it is simple to use , takes up less RAM (not like Kies , which is a resource hog) and it gives detailed information as to what is happening .
its simple really..
kies=crap
odin=lifesaver
I don't even use kies. Want to back up contacts? Use google account. Back up music? Sync to some server or keep a backup by yourself. No need for Kies at all!
KIES is good for getting latest official firmware for the country your in.
After that ODIN is the best way to flash it!
Cheers

Nice win-win explanation .
Do you mean you check with Kies if there's already a firmware update but you don't use Kies to download it, and you use Odin instead? If so, where do you go to download the the same firmware update as the one showed by Kies?
Odin is definetely better than kies
I believe Kies can sync your music/photos?
I didn't use Kies that much though.
Kies and odin are for totally different task. There's no need to compare them. IMO.
I think 2.3 stock gingerbread has this setting-> about -> Update. Not sure it can do OTA update.
For me, both of them somehow s**k since they run mainly on windows.
i never used kies in my life (its lame)never works N too slow ...
odin the best no doubt
using it since i have bought galaxy ace
rating of 5 stars-
0din-*****
kies- 1/2 stars
Samsung should improve it ..
NONE...lol..I dont flash firmwares much For the history,Odin,no question
I got Kies for the SGA drivers and that was it. It's entirely useless, it wont even recognize my phone!
Didn't kies have a memory problem that could interrupt the flashing process?
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
Kies is a vastly different peice of software. Its not just a flashing tool as odin is. The original kies was best, it was almost a desktop replacement. In principal though, if you use custom roms witch most on here do its a pointless to have it.
Sent from my MB525 using xda premium
Odin hands down.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Suppose I'm currently on custom ROM, and I want to go back to stock.
1. I would not be able to use Kies, correct?
2. Is it because Kies is used to upgrade from old firmware to latest firmware only? It cannot install the latest firmware if the device is currently running a custom ROM, correct?
3. Suppose my device is currently running official Android 2.3.4, and I want to upgrade it to 2.3.6. It is already available through Kies, but I can also install it by downloading the EXACT 'one package' file and using Odin to flash it. I would assume using the second approach (Odin) is safer because the upgrading process won't have to rely on constant internet connection. If I use Kies, and the internet connection is suddenly cut off, that would possibly brick my phone. Correct?
4. The 2.3.6 is already available in my country through Kies. Is it exactly the same as the S5830DXKT5 for Singapore/Singtel in this website:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-S5830&r=2
and can I use it even if I don't live in Singapore?
1. If you go back to the "Official" stock ROM, yes you will be able to use Kies.
2. No, Kies does not detect and support Custom ROMs.
3. Kies downloads the firmware first, then it starts flashing it onto your phone, so a stable internet connection is not required. However, the software itself is crappy and a resource hog. But I had managed to upgrade in 2 tries using a "Netbook".
008bond, what about number 4? =)
Yes, it is the same , but I don't think you will be able to use it as teh carrier is not supported. Not too sure on this one, wait for others to reply

You are wrong
They are not the same. The one being provided by Kies is official,it suits your region, like,it gives you bloatware apps that are related to your country
Flashing a firmware made for another region will not affect your phone.Theres no problem with that.I use KPH which was made for Europian regions..lol
since i use custom roms (flashing almost every custom roms..) from the 2nd day i bought my ace.. i try to update my ace in my 1st day using kies, and then its hang and my ace brick. (stuck at download text)
i try again, and it did the same thing, so i try using odin and flash the latest update, then it solved.
my opinion, kies dind't help my ace.. but odin save my ace.. ( just for me, i guess)

I am trying to upgrade my samsung galaxy S with kies.
But it stuck when "preparing firmware upgrade components..."
after that nothing happends for hours.
Can someone help me with this?
Kies Mini is junk, IMO. I recommend scouring the forums for your preferred update files (PIT, TAR, and the proper Odin version).
Also, if you want help with this you'll need to post more information -- like your model of phone, carrier, etc.
Seriously, I've been using Odin 3 v1.85 with a lot of success. I had quite a bit of trouble with all the "one-key" rooting programs, tried Odin and got everything working the first time... Well... the first time after switching out my cable. (don't use the stock USB cable for flashing. Pop the extra cash for a decent name brand cable)
Also, don't freak out if you can't get the phone working properly after messing it up with Kies. As long as you can get the "download mode" up and running, you should be able to flash with Odin and fix everything.

I like to update with KIES because I need to put the phone on service so I need original ROM.
First I uploaded android 2.1 from samfirmware and can't upgdare, after I put android 2.2 and it is the same.. even If I use spooffw program.
Phone is Samsung galaxy S and I need version of program with MOT.
I tryed to upgrade in 2 computers but always is the same
"preparing firmware upgrade components..."

what if you try updating to 2.3.3 and then use spoof fw to set it to MOT?
I took a look at samfirmware, i'm not sure if there's the right version.
did you make a backup of your stock rom, after having rooted?

I am almost soure that samfirmware doesn't have right version.
I didn't make backup. My friend have the same phone can I backup his ROM and restore on my phone?
I use spooffw and already set it to MOT but stil can't upgrade.
does he have a stock phone? nothing done yet? which android version!
if it is below or equal 2.2.1 u should be able to root it with superoneclick http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
then you can install rom manager from market, make a backup of his rom, and restore it on your phone.
i think this could work
I think it is below 2.2.1
I will check and try.
Is there a way that people see on service that I have rooted my phone before?
If you manage to unroot it and flash stock kernel and rom...which your friend should have, they won't!

What about some counter which count installed ROMS
Never heard about that before.
maybe. You should google that
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
it exist only on sgs2 but it's easy to reset using the USB dongle.
To counter-act the counter, look on Ebay for a Samsung Galaxy "Jig". Make sure your model is specifically supported. It will reset the ROM counter to 0 and put the phone into download mode. (And it will restore almost any kind of bricked Galaxy S)
Please board members, correct me if I'm wrong, but using Odin vs Kies doesn't affect the ROM install. That is to say, a tech looking at the phone's data files couldn't tell if it was Odin or Kies that was used for the flash.
Look up your exact phone in the forums, go to the development subsection, look for a subject heading that says "[Odin]" and "[Stock]" that doesn't also have other ROM modifications such as "[rooted]" or [ext4].
Ok basically what I need to do is this:
A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine bought a S2, since Kies gave me the option to upgrade mine to ICS I told him to try and upgrade it as well, but Kies refuses to provide him the update, we flashed a rom using ODIN but is not working as well as it should be doing, is there any way for me to extract a full image of my phone (or at least of the system files) and copy it to my friend's phone?
Both phones are standard I9100, so I doubt that there's any incompatibility issues
Far simpler to find out what firmware you're running, download it from here/samfirmware/checkfus and flash it via Odin on his phone, assuming he has the exact same model number and not some variant.

Is true, that actually sound more simple, now how do I know which F/W do I have?
Phone settings about or connect to KIES .

After a day and a half of trouble and stress using Kies, I wonder if there is anyway of getting the stock AT&T ICS ROM (the one that I would get if I upgrade using Kies) without using Kies, like downloading and flashing in ODIN or some other method. Because using Kies is impossible.
Bump I really, really need this. I won't be able to update for weeks or a month if not.
also, when Kies recognizes it (1 in 1000 times) it says "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies". I am unrooted and on stock rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1763634 first link in post #5 unzip and place in pda slot in odin
or you could just root your phone and flash an ICS rom
XDA is no longer worth my time.

OK, try Kies one more time. FIRST uninstall and reinstall the Samsung Mobile Device Driver. Just to be sure since you seem to be having connection problems.
Then...
Put Note into Download mode with no USB connected.
Start Kies (must be latest version ....12064_9...)
Plug in the USB (Note and PC)
Select > Tools > Firmware Upgrade and Initialization
THIS WIPES YOUR PHONE! But when it completes you are at the latest FW, currently ICS. It WILL do it even if Kies never says it connected first. I did this with my soft bricked Note that wouldn't boot completely.

Fixed, had tried that 10 times, but tried on another computer and it worked.
Also, now how to root and keep stock? Pref. A stock kernel. Or rerouted kernel. Or the easiest way
Is there a light at the end of the tunnel for me?

I have been trying to outsmart Samsung Kies since the update came out. I could not wait, like many of you guys, and decided to try out some custom ROMs, so I was not allowed to download the update because of the firmware message. I've downgraded to stock Gingerbread ROM, reset the binary flash counter, and wiped all the data on my phone, yet it is not enough.
When i did the *#1234# thing, I got PDA: I717UCLA1 (which was the same code as my CSC before I reset the flash counter), Phone: I717UCLC5 (the last ROM I was on), and CSC: I717ATTLA1 (what I think I need them all to be).
Since there has only been one official firmware version, 2.3.6, aside from the ICS I want, I can't make my phone think I have only been on stock firmware for the past two flashes. I'm totally screwed unless someone makes the Kies version flash-able through ODIN or tells me I'm an idiot and hands me the solution to cracking Kies on a silver platter!
Do the method that If you open Kies then go to Tools then Firmware upgrade & initialization, it asks for two pieces of info about the phone. The S/N & model number. Enter them exactly as is (back of the phone behind the battery) use SGH-I717 as model (capital letters). Worked for me. If it doesn't, try on another pc.
Also, now signal seems a lot weaker, fix?
You guys know how much easier it would have been to just to flash clockwork recovery mod right? You could download and flash roms without a computer or USB cord all day.

I'm on a Mac and when i click on Tools, i get this: Emergency firmware recovery, Firmware upgrade settings, and Install driver
When i go to Firmware upgrade settings, i see a blank box. I feel like the Kies update itself didn't work properly because it goes to 100%, asks for my computer password, then just freezes there until i click cancel at the bottom.
Help.
I just bought my Note today [came from an Atrix running CM7]. The rep at the store said I would get an OTA update of ICS when I booted up....but that didn't happen. Was he mistaken? So I decided to flash one directly from xda, I've rooted, got odin up and running, flashed CWM and was going to flash an ICS rom...but not sure which one. Most of the ROM threads say discontinued, some are hybrids, can't seem to find just a plain ICS rom. What is the best running ICS rom available? Was the rep wrong and the Note hasn't gotten an official ICS update, as it appears all these roms are from leaked versions that don't retain the original note features.
Any help from anyone that's been around the Note forum for a while and is up to date on all these choices for getting ICS would be awesome!
Thanks
It was released a while ago. You can try the official the kies if you want to give that a shot first. Also, there are some official ics rims (uclf6) means the official release so all of those are official not leaks. But yeah, just read a bit more I'd say.
I would suggest cm9 nightly if you had cm7 on your matrix. Black star is probably the closest to stock that's been updated recently

Are you US at&t or Canada? The ota update for Canada had problems so if that's you, don't accept it. Do as others have said and use Kies. Don't root or add a recovery until you install the upgrade.

..and I thought I was pretty well read on Android [lol]. I didn't realize there would be such difference between manufacturers. Previously I've flashed everything via CWM. This will be my first device utilizing Odin, and Kies. I've already run a couple things via Odin with not problems. I see a lot of references to Kies, [One last question before I begin] is this the same Kies that comes installed on the Note [which appears to be a web-interface to browse your phone contents], or is there a different Kies I should be using for updating ROMs?

Figures, you mention exactly the ONLY two things I've done to my device so far - Rooted, and added CWM. Do you say this because I will have to repeat those processes over again after upgrade, or because they will hinder the upgrade process?

yes you will loose root and cwm, so if you use the link I posted you can use odin instead of kies, get cwm from braway's thread for odin, and get superuser.zip for ics and put it on the sd card before you start the process, go to download mode, flash the update thru odin, then the cwm thru odin, and then you can boot into cwm and flash the superuser zip, and get root back. Easy. :good:

Thanks, I started the ICS file download a few minutes ago, the 'free' download is really, really, really throttled so it looks like I've got about an hour to wait for that. I got all the other files waiting and ready...should be good to go when the d/l finishes.
Thanks
No that's Kies Air and its about as useless as a third nipple.
Go to the Samsung-Kies site for the upgrade and everyrhing will be there (files to download, drivers, step-by-step directions).
You do this with your pc. You use the stock usb cable. You use usb port on the back of your pc (powered usb).

That would explain why I could not find the option to update firmware! Thanks...got the PC version from Samsung site. I'm really liking ICS. It seems like now official Android includes a lot of the features that were in Older Cyanogen Mod versions that made it so much better than stock Android. I'd say it's very possible to be happy with this device leaving it with a stock ROM. For those who have gone the custom route [I'm leaning towards CM9, as I've been happy with CM on my Atrix] are there any features that you couldn't imagine being without. Besides the usual performance tweaks, and bloat removal that would be nice...it would also be nice not chasing the 'nightly threads' and flashing updates at least once a week. It seems there a lot more people in this I717 forum who are sticking with stock ICS, than there were people sticking with stock GB on the Atrix forum. For those running the manufacturer ICS update, is there anything glaring missing that would make you inclined to go custom? I've only been using it for less than a day, and need to make a quick decision where to go custom or not because I leave for a week tomorrow morning.
Thanks again for any input...
...Sorry to all those who have helped with their replys and haven't been 'thanked' properly [get maxed out at 8 / day]. I will try and catch up on that each day, as I really appreciate everyone's input. It's been very useful in making the decision on what devices I purchase, and getting them up and running as desired quickly...especially when working with a device / manufacturer for the first time.
You have CWM. Just go get a few rom's, label them in different folders on your external sd card, get Titanium Backup, an sms and phone call baxkup and restore, and you can flash any rom and put your apps and stuff on without internet access.
When restoring with TiBU only never restore system data. Doing that will make even the fastest rom act sick.
I have to say the collective's aocp is an amazing smooth ROM you lose spen gestures
but there are other apps and features that make me not miss them.i would highly recommend it.
U will loose s pen with all ROMs that don't run touchwiz(cm9, 10, hybrids........) but ur phone will run better. U can get papyrus from the market if that bothers u.

Hi all, I know this has been done and dusted but I am having problems with connecting to kies after rooting. I am running standard jelly bean 4.1.2 and is an Australian GT-I9100. I installed the siyah kernal root system and now all I get on kies is "connecting" Windows 7 recognises and I can access the phone via explorer on the PC. The phone after a while comes up with a message that there is no compatible software on the PC, install kies...
I have tried all the so called fixes including formatting the internal SD and memory. The only thing I did before it stopped connecting was the root and running Triangle away (paid version). I have enabled / disabled USB debugging. The only things I haven't tried is a factory reset which I don't really want to do as I am always sceptical that the backup apps will work after to restore everything.
Any help appreciated

Yes, Kies definitely sees the phone as it comes up with GTI9100 loading on the left top and in the centre it just sits saying connecting. I think the phone is not seeing kies as the message on my phone always comes up only when trying to connect to kies.
I have tried 3 computers/laptops same result. Different USB cables original plus other really high end ones also. No Joy. Looks like if I want to connect to kies I must revert back to stock kernal as the firmware I never changed it is the OTA from samsung 4.1.2 and rooted the S2 only...
Also Not knowing Samsung but in the about on my Motorola Tablet/phone even when rooted when you try to check for updates they say none available, the samsung actually says "Your device has been modified, no updates available"...

Okay had a look at this, thanks. I do have a question though, my Kernel (PDA) is XWLSH, I have downloaded the 2 files but I am wondering how to install? Do I use my CW recovery or do I have to revert back to stock? A little confusing as he dowsn't really give instructions and I am pretty much an amateur when it comes to some of these things? Also I am running JB 4.1.2 he only mentions ICS 4.0.4? Help appreciated here...
Actually just re-read the post and I think I know now what to do. Correct me if I am wrong but the 2 files I downloaded are for 2 different methods of installing, the Zip file via SD card and the MD5 file by odin. Is this correct?

Yes. ZIP is for flashing from recovery and tar.md5 is for flashing from ODIN.
Maybe the best way will be to reflash your whole stock firmware to get correct previous state before you started flashing syiah. You can get it on Sammobile.com - (simple registration needed) and then use PhilZ recomended method - flash ZIP from stock recovery
What is your Country / operator, Try this http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/2/ to find right and latest oficial firmware for your country / operator version for your phone.
edit: For XWLSH it may be GT-I9100LKJXSA - unbranded australia version, or GT-I9100LKJOPS - Australia OPTUS operator customized version.

Hi Again, solved the problem... definitely the siyah root was the culprit. I used mobile Odin to install the stock kernel, once done checked and could connect in kies and was still rooted missing busybox only. After that I again used mobile odin to install philZ, again no problems and all seems fine now. Everything working.
Thanks a million for helping and also many thanks to mobile odin developers as this is a far better tool than most and saves connecting to the PC Odin. Also seems a lot safer...
