[Q] How to update radio if rooted from HTC unlock method? - HTC EVO 3D

One big concern for those that have rooted with the HTC unlock method:
How do we update the radio in the future? If you look at gu1dry's radio thread he says you must be s off to update (via bootloader) and we don't get s off with this method. Can someone ease my mind?
I guess I have the same question for updating wimax as well.

Wrong thread to ask in? Try in q and a. But regardless yes you need to be s off in order to flash a new radio.

So there is no other way? You are seriously stuck with the current radio unless you unroot/lock and take an official OTA?

So when the next OTA/radio update is out you be able to take it and remain unlocked but most likely unrooted with a good chance of root being broken?

It will most likely unroot it, but you'll still be able to root it exactly the same way you did when you first unlocked it. By either flashing a rom that is already rooted or flashing the superuser.zip

Hi guys, i'm just thinking about this:
If i downgrade hboot and i do root and recovery, when ics will be released i'll be able to update to it (FOTA)? Of course i'll go back to stock by RUU.exe

In all honesty, you can stay on stock, but there will be rooted version's, rom's which you'll want which will make the stock one look a bit naff, plus you won't be able to use apps like titanium and adfree etc.
Personally i'd never go with a stock rom, unless i had to. i'd probably get rid of my phone if i had to stay on stock.
I only want to know if i'll be able to update or no to ics >.<

Mmmm... but it's the same if i unlock now right?! So i unlock now and when ics is released i'll get back to stock Right?
Just make a nandroid of the stock rom once you have recovery cwm and then you can simply 'superwipe' and restore, then just ota update.
I never even used the htc_unlock site because I had a cid_001 phone.
But first i have to downgrade the bootloader. i have done it. It have changed my android version now i'm updating by ota to lastest firmware. And then i s-off and install recovery and do a nandroidbackup right? Answer yes or no.

I agree with whoever said wait and get the rooted version.
A stock ICS rooted ROM will more than likely be up within 24 hr of it rolling, which is probably before most people get it naturally anyway.

Is there any advantage to being on ICS hboot/firmware? I have been flashing roms but I went s-off last night to make the process easier. I suppose I don't mind flashing the GB patch. Thanks for the quick reply

Cannot downgrade EVO 4G LTE after installing OTA update.

I keep getting ERROR [140]: BOOTLOADER ERROR from the RUU. What do I do? I really need root.
Did you try to do the htc dev unlock? With that, and some of the other posts around here, you can get root....but you won't be able to get S-Off. It's not a huge problem -- you can still do most of what you want, but if you have hboot 1.15 or higher, you have to wait until they find an exploit.
There is no current way to downgrade.

By downgrade I mean downgrade the default stock ROM if you want to call it that. If you thought Android then, well...
The only relevant downgrade would be an H-boot so that you can gain S-OFF. At this time it is not possible. Thats what everyone thought you were talking about doing.
You can always just flash a ROM on the old base if thats what you wanted to do.

I was wondering if any experienced DEV or anyone with correct information can tell us what we will need in order to receive an OTA update (be it tomorrow or whenever) if we are S-OFF? Devs will get the update and put out a new ROM. Someone will pull the new HBOOT out of the update package and you'll flash in the bootloader.
Just like before.
Thread moved to Q&A.
If you want to stay rooted don't ever accept OTAs. Wait till someone posts a rooted version instead.
Thanks guys. Also, will a new hboot be required to flash a rooted jb sense rom.?
dont take the OTA
wait a couple days for the files to be dumped then we will make roms for it

Hboot is the only piece you don't want. What I did last time was download the pcimg file that contained latest firmware, radio, pri, prl, etc...
Make sure it dosen't contain kernel, hboot, or recovery.
Flash the new radios by booting into boot loader, then wait a day or two until ur favorite rom maker has updated their rom. Then flash that with recovery

Not entirely true, you can lose soff but root is easily achievable. HTC allows the bootloader to be unlocked for development purposes. You would still be able to unlock and flash recovery. From there you can flash a Rom and then kernel in fastboot

If you aren't s-off, the only way to update the radio is to take the ota. There has been an s-off method that's easy to use now for awhile and if you haven't used it yet than you might as well take the ota since s-off must not be important to them.

HTC releases the RUU, Sprint releases the OTA files. I know the RUUs used to be posted on HTC's website on each phone's page but I don't know if they do that anymore. Most likely a dev will post it as soon as it gets released.
While we wait, what happened to your phone? Maybe someone here can help.

To flash a custom ROM: You cannot downgrade the hboot yet as you already know, but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to go the more primitive root and use HTC's unlock method, flash TWRP (which has HTC Dumlock workaround for the boot.img) and go from there.
Completely Stock: All other RUUs will fail. You can checkout the stock OTA file here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2045839 You should be able to flash this file from the stock recovery by renaming to update.zip but please check with a developer first since I have not actually tried this myself! To install the stock recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2045935 and choose the 3rd firmware option (it will write ALL new firmware) including hboot, recovery, kernel, etc.)

The RUU we're waiting for is the .exe file that you run in Windows while connecting your phone to your PC. Not a zip.
