[q] how to get ota updates if s-off? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I was wondering if any experienced DEV or anyone with correct information can tell us what we will need in order to receive an OTA update (be it tomorrow or whenever) if we are S-OFF? Please verify which ROM,RADIO,HBOOT,etc.. we need to be on in order to receive the update. Thanks to whomever can assist.

Devs will get the update and put out a new ROM. Someone will pull the new HBOOT out of the update package and you'll flash in the bootloader.
Just like before.

Thread moved to Q&A.
If you want to stay rooted don't ever accept OTAs. Wait till someone posts a rooted version instead.

Thanks guys. Also, will a new hboot be required to flash a rooted jb sense rom.?

dont take the OTA
wait a couple days for the files to be dumped then we will make roms for it
i know i will be porting my rom to this goodness

Hboot is the only piece you don't want. What I did last time was download the pcimg file that contained latest firmware, radio, pri, prl, etc...
Make sure it dosen't contain kernel, hboot, or recovery.
Flash the new radios by booting into boot loader, then wait a day or two until ur favorite rom maker has updated their rom. Then flash that with recovery

For the love of god DON'T TAKE THE OTA. Just wait a couple of hours and a dev will have a firmware and rooted stock Rom to update your phone to the latest and greatest. You waited this long whats a couple of hours.

DO NOT take the OTA update if you do you take the chance not to be able to get root or S-OFF again. Wait for the Devs to release it

Not entirely true, you can lose soff but root is easily achievable. HTC allows the bootloader to be unlocked for development purposes. You would still be able to unlock and flash recovery. From there you can flash a Rom and then kernel in fastboot

If you aren't s-off, the only way to update the radio is to take the ota. There has been an s-off method that's easy to use now for awhile and if you haven't used it yet than you might as well take the ota since s-off must not be important to them.

Wrong!
You can take the update, it will unroot you, AND if the new update includes a new HBOOT it will flash over and give you a security warning and/or S-ON.
your best bet is to wait a few hours and someone will make a rooted version of the new ota... but chances are we will have the ota update weeks before it is ever pushed to any non rooted phones... at the moment .6 is stock.. and all the roms are .9 so all I"m waiting on is a new radio update to hopefully fix this wacky 3g signal I get

If it detects you are a lower version then the OTA it will still attempt to upgrade.
Ok. From what I understand, the OTA won't automatically install if I am rooted. Which is good. But if I wanted to I could force the OTA to install?
But from what some people in this thread say, it's not worth it, and I could just get a unrooted version of the OTA from here at some point?
Is that all correct?
I am only interested because I heard there was a big OTA coming on the 16th, and I expect that it will fix a bunch of random stuff on the TB. So I'd like to get it.
I'm pretty sure you need to have stock recovery installed to install the OTA. If using CWM it will not install.
Wow this is interesting...i flashed a new radio yesterday is this the new ota update.
jcase said he thinks the leaked ruu is supposed to be the first OTA.

[Q] How to update radio if rooted from HTC unlock method?

One big concern for those that have rooted with the HTC unlock method:
How do we update the radio in the future? If you look at gu1dry's radio thread he says you must be s off to update (via bootloader) and we don't get s off with this method. Can someone ease my mind?
I guess I have the same question for updating wimax as well.
Wrong thread to ask in? Try in q and a. But regardless yes you need to be s off in order to flash a new radio.

It will most likely unroot it, but you'll still be able to root it exactly the same way you did when you first unlocked it. By either flashing a rom that is already rooted or flashing the superuser.zip

ICS upgrade.

Just a question will I need to be unrooted to receive and or download/ install the ICS upgrade when it is made available?
Sent from my rooted HTC_Amaze_4G using Tapatalk
From what I recall, you need to relock the bootloader to install OTA updates... So, I would assume you would need at least to relock the bootloader if they do not give us a zip to upgrade to ICS... And even then, to update from zip, you have to relock the bootloader, it will also delete your superuser on the rom, so you will lose root. It will probably also overwrite your recovery at the same time, so in the end, it's best to relock the bootloader before you upgrade to OTA to prevent it from bricking your phone.
With the last update we did not have to relock our bootloader however we did need the stock recovery. We've only had one OTA update since we've obtained root so it's difficult to say what a totally new build will require.
In most cases with various different phones, you can download the OTA to the phone but it will not install if the /system partition has been modified and you have a custom recovery installed. In order to properly update with an OTA, the ROM would need to be returned to stock and you would need to flash the stock recovery back to the phone as the OTA does checks against the system to ensure it's okay to flash. You do not have to be relocked in order to install it, however.
The best idea would be to wait until the OTA has been modified to ignore /system modifications and can be flashed using CWM, but of course that takes a little time until it is available.
I found the Stock Roms forum but will that relock my boot loader as well. I'm thinking it won't but doesn't hurt to ask.

No, the only ways to relock the bootloader is to run the Relocker script in the dev forum, or manually type "fastboot oem lock" in fastboot. Flashing ROMs will not relock the phone for you.
However, it is worth noting that you cannot flash the official stock ROMs without having the phone relocked first.

Not true. we did flash the stock roms the last time ota update came out and we didnt relock the bootloader. it only required to have stock recovery because you lose root once you flash the stock rom.

You must relock the bootloader to flash the RUU file.
i think i will wait until one of the developers or x makes a ota rooted build, usually when all the major ota comes somebody makes a rooted flash leak about it,

OTA update

can this update be done if you are rooted and unlock?
It is always recommended to not accept any ota updates once rooted as you may lose root and the ability to root in the future. The dev's will post a stock rooted updated rom within a day or two. I would wait and flash that.
I'm sure you could, but give the devs time they will work this into an update fairly quickly I"m sure. you never know what OTA is going to break root or worse.
I wouldn't take the OTA. be patient

Take the advises from above and wait. I'm also waiting a little longer before flashing a ROM. If you want the fixes from this update just download MEAN ROM and install it, it already has most of this fixes incorporate. The most important feature for me is tethering and I already got it.

General rule of thumb is to never accept OTAs if you plan on being or are rooted. If you have s-off that should be safe though, far as I know the only way to lose it is to manually turn it back on.
