Hi all,
I sincerely apologize up front if this is a dumb question but I'm not as geeky as some (or most) of you...
I currently have my X2 on Eclipse v0.5 which I love, but I have a question about the two different ways of wiping data/cache...
Now that I am on the Eclipse rom, what happens if I do a full factory reset/wipe data/cache from the Android recovery instead of the Bootstrap CWM recovery? Does that bring me back to the p3droid's GB that I originally flashed? I assume it doesn't go back to 2.2 since everyone talks about needing to SBF back to 2.2...
When flashing a new rom, I always do a complete factory reset, wipe data, cache, dalvik cache through the Bootstrap recovery, but never from the Android recovery, for that throws up a huge red flag.
If anyone knowledgeable could school me, I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!
When you wipe data from bootstrap it's the same as thru stock recovery ....what your doing now should be just fine

It doesn't hurt anything to reset on the rom your running

If You Wipe Using The Stock Android Recovery It Erases The CWM Recovery. Make Sure To Reinstall The Recovery After.

I have a quick question. I'm in Joelz 2.3.3 at the moment but I've been wanting to try a 2.3.4 rom. So i've been wondering, when flashing to one. What all do I have to update and how? I believe change the name to PGsomethin and let it update through hboot? Then do I delete it or keep it on the card? And when flashing back to an 2.3.3 Rom will everything be okay?

Rom's come in a zip format. Boot into recovery (use the 4 in 1 or an app such as quick boot) once in recovery wipe cache and davlik cache at a minimum. You may need to do a full wipe of data, cache and davlik. Or you can use a tool like superwipe which reformats boot, system, cache, and data partitions. Usually a wipe of cache and davlik works as long as the ROMS have a similar base. Once that is done select flash zip from sd card, then select the zip of the rom you want. Then flash that sucker. when it is done it will tell you, then go back a couple menus and reboot. Presto you're done. The first boot after a davlik and cache wipe may take a while so be patient.
Once you are done you can delete the zip from the sd card.
If you are going from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 you may want to flash the radios from 2.3.4. the ROM thread should have this info if required or recommended.
Going back to 2.3.3 is just as easy just put the 2.3.3 ROM on the card and flash that in the same manner.
Word of advice is to always make a nandroid backup, its under backup then usually choosing the boot, data, and system partitions will suffice. This way if you do something that totally borks the phone you can volume down and power to get to recovery then restore the nandroid and you are right back where you started no harm no foul.
Good luck. Also if you check the wiki's most of this info is in there if you need more detailed instructions.
Thanks

So I unlocked my phone using pudding to flash the 2.3.5 rom. Then I decided to rdslight back to stock(photon SUN-198_7). I don't know if I needed to flash stock recovery smg but I've tried that but my photon still won't boot past the boot screen. Any other methods?

Try wiping before flashing.
When wiping, make sure you wipe all the cache, davlik cache, and then do a factory reset. After doing all that, then flash the rom.
If that does not work, had you done a nandroid backup before flashing a rom? If so, try reverting to that.
The problem is that when I rds to sbf file photon SUN-198_7 its stuck in a bootloop.

The 2.3.5. Removes recovery. Install boot strap recovery, and use it to flash zip version of romracer cwm.

Are you seeing any messages on the screen when the phone boot loops? Can you RSD and fastboot? Are you getting any failed to boot messages?
I fixed it. Did a fastboot -w to wipe and then proceeded with unlock sbf. Thanks for the input tho.

With the Motorola Droid line of phones, it's possible to go into recovery and wipe the cache partition.
Is this possible with the TFP? I went into the stock recovery, and only saw a choice to "Wipe data," which I presume would wipe the entire device.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Not sure on the cache but the factory wipe will restore it to factory.. all user data/apps will be gone.. I just did it today by Asus recommendation for the ANR issue and it did not resolve it..

Not possible unles you have a custom recovery, meaning unlocked device. You can just clear all apps cache one by one in app menu.
Need to.install custom recovery first bro

Yeah I realize this is probably a noob question, but I'm proud (kinda anyway) to admit I am one.
Before jumping head first into flashing a different ROM (currently rooted w/ CWM & ViperXL) I want to make sure I don't end up with a paperweight or at least hours of unexpected work. My reason is just because I want to check out what other Roms have to offer. So its more than possible I may end up back on Viper at some point. Having read some semi-related threads it sounds like this is as simple backing up (nandroid, apps, system data) then flashing from recovery followed with a restore of apps and sys data.
Is there anything I'm missing? Do you need to do a cache and Dalvik wipe? Do I need to load a new boot.img, kernel or anything else? Am I thinking too much and making it seem harder than it really is?

It's pretty simple, just back everything up, wipe system, data, and the cache + dalvik-cache. Then install the ROM, and flash the kernel. Then, you can restore data if you want.

Just to be clear in CWM its the following wipes ONLY!
Main screen
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
Advanced menu >
- wipe dalvik cache
remember (and please someone correct me if I'm wrong) flash the kernel first then jump to recovery.
Oh and ALWAYS have a rom.zip on your phone even if you dont require it, that way you could always reflash your way out of trouble should you forget to put that new rom on to try
I'm currently running safe strap 3.65. Been flashing roms for quite a while but always left the stock slot alone. I'm wondering if there were any real down sides or things to be careful about when flashing a custom rom/kernal to the stock slot. There's the obvious, that a rom wouldn't work and I would have no working roms, but i'm not worried about that as I could easily flash another. Thanks in advance.
Also wondering. I did a backup of stock but it doesnt exist now! And flashed cm10.1.3 and it won't boot.....

Does anyone know how to install CM 10.1.3 or 10.2 to stock slot? I tried it, but it won`t boot. I had a stock slot with root and safestrap enabled, then i wiped stock slot in safestrap. After that my phone didn`t do anything, it seems that safestrap has deleted itself while wiping stock slot. So i had to restore my system with RSD Lite.
I did exact same thing. I even backed up before flashing and then the back up dissappear or didn't actually back up

It works now. Installed Stock with RSD lite, rooted it, installed SS3.65 and did a wipe cache, data and factory reset. Then i installed CM 10.2, Avatar rom 4.3 over stock system. Then i installed Gapps and JBX kernel 1.5. It is running great.
Just wanted to update this since I hadn't received any responses about the actual pros and cons. I decided to jump right in and do it and see what happened. Here's what I did.
SafeStrap 3.65:
Activate stock slot
wipe: cache, dalvik cache, android secure, data, system
repeat (I always repeat this step to be sure everything is clear)
Flash CM11 12/15 Nightly
Flash PA Gapps
Flash WiFi Access Point Patch
Flash JBX 2.0 Kernal
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
Reboot.
Everything works perfectly on stock slot.

I prefer to leave the stock side alone for a couple of reasons. I like to always have it there as a fall back boot option. Also, if you have to delete ROM slots and are down to the option of having none left, you need to be able to activate the stock slot so that you can delete the last slot.
Seems the biggest pro for flashing over stock is saving storage space.

Is the Backup maybe on the SD card and you searching in the internal storage, or other way round?
Just set it completely stock, rooted and deleted everything for **** and hdmi so annoying hdmi quits popping up forcing landscape mode

How did you wipe system and your safestrap still works? If i wipe system, safestrap wipes itself and the recovery stops working after the wipe, phone is bricked. Only RSD helps fixing it

Lol, I made a thread a long while ago, and that was my exact setup that I posted in that thread...
