I have a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 running honeycomb 3.1 that I recently purchased the USB adapter for. I have a 250GB external hard drive formatted in FAT with its own power supply, however when it is connected to my tablet android recognizes the hard drive but none of the several file reading apps I have tried recognize it. Any ideas?
Thanks.
i guess the adaptor could only read up to 32GB of space and it should be fat32 so I can tell u to try to partition ur hard drive to 32GB parts its annoying I know but its better than nth wish this helps... I want to try so after I finish my vacation so u can try and report back..
Edit : some say they got the 1TB to work by making sure its a USB cable virgin 2.0 u can read more here

Hi i had the same problem with my external hard drive.
Every time i connected the drive it to say a usb device was connected and then attempt to open the mY files file manger. I would brefily see the file stored on my drive and then i would get the the usb device was unexpectedly disconnected.
heres how i over came that problem.
1) plug the external hard drive SG 10.1. usb device was unexpectly removed error will be displayed.
2) turn off the SG 10.1. do not unplug your external hard drive
3) turn on the Sg 10.1
4) open my files file manger and all your files should now be displayed in
storages/usb/sda
have fun it would appear there is some bug in my files or the mounting of the external hard drive but this is beyond me.
hope someone can fix this.
BTW.
I am running my sg 10.1 unrooted with stock firmware and touchwiz

i connected a WD Essential SE portable hdd (1TB) to the Tab 10.1 via the usb adaptor and a powered usb hub. The drive is formatted to FAT32.
When powered up, the Tab shows usb storage connected but after awhile it becomes usb device unexpectedly removed. I am not able to access the portable drive at all.
Anyone can advise if there is anything I can do to make it work?
My Tab is 3G version with Android 3.1 with baseband P7500UBKG6.
Thanks.
me too...
any solution guys?
I presume you need to have a seperate power supply since the tab seems to refuse to use high-power usb devices all together.
I tried connecting my disk dock and that worked fine(uses a normal power supply on the side)
got it to work by using Broodcomb ROM and using [email protected] manager to format the harddisk to FAT32, not sure which one cause it to work. The setup is the same as before.

Hi, I usually dont write, but I read a lot here.
about 2 weeks ago i bought my S3, and everything was great. about 2 days ago I bought a 32GB MicroSD card (Sandisk Ultra Mobile CL10)
and put it into the phone, when I try to connect it to the computer via the USB cable, the transfer rate is extremely slow!!!
It usually just freeze about the middle and just pop-out a message that "The File could not be copied", and its the same to every file I try (regardless the type/size etc).
the strange thing is that it does the same to the internal memory!
if I take out the the MicroSD and put it into a card-reader and into a the computer it works great and transfer rate is about 20Mb/s!
is there anything I can/should do?
I know that on my old Motorola I could plug it into the computer and the SD card was shown as a "Removable Disk" and I could just copy and paste, and the S3 is either shown by a Camera or a media device... is there a way to make it as a Removable Disk?
I'm with a stock rom is that's matter.
hope I could get your help.
Thanks.

Sound like a problem i had when i got my 32gb card. for me it turned out that i had to change the usb port as the one i was using decided to be a usb1.0 port, changed port, installed drivers for a different port and it fixed my issue, dunno if it will work for you but worth a try.
also try formatting your card.

I just tried on another computer, the problem didn't occur but the transfer rate is still VERY slow...
I format the card within the phone and when I looked on the properties of the MicroSD card, under File System is written "generic hierarchical" - is that normal? is there anyway i could format it to NTFS or even FAT32? the phone will still recogsize it if i do?

Thats what mine says too, not sure which format it uses by default.
I have heard that you can format to ntfs or fat32, but i havent tried it, too scared to damage it and loose 32gb from my phone accidently, lol (ive done this before. ) but search and see.
Hey android fam, so i just updated to the newest software (unrooted) and i like it except for one thing. i use my sd card to play my music in my car via usb port. the problem is i cant get it to automatically mount as disk drive when its connected. when i try to slide it down and select disk drive my head unit already says n/a usb. does anyone know how to set it as default disk drive like on the old software?
I have a sprint s3 with 16gb internal and 16gb external and I want to completely back up both directly to my computers Hard drive. If I connect it via usb it either takes hours to copy all the folders and when it does work, I wont get everything in the storage. What is a good app to usb connect my phone and backup or copy and entire directory? WiFi is also and option, but not google drive or dropbox.. I have too much data for them anyways. Thanks
I've been wanting to ask this for a while now. I have a USB OTG for my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it's able to recognize my 1gb and 4gb drives. However, when I try my higher capacity 16gb and 32gb drives it says "high powered device connected" and doesn't open them like it would on my lower capacity drives. I read somewhere that Android is only able to recognize 4gb usb drives with a FAT file system. Not sure how true it is but my tab has 4.0.4 ICS stock rom on it. Also, it doesn't recognize my wired mouse and says it's also a high powered device.
Anyway my focus is on the flash drive. How do I make it recognize higher capacity drives? And can anyone recommend brands that work? Thank you.

Try this hack. Instead of inserting the OTG first then the USB, try it the other way round. The USB into the OTG then the OTG to tab. Or just install a new ROM.
